THE AVE - ISSUE 7 8th & 9th August
NRFL DOUBLE HEADER
2 Welcome to another issue of Ellerslie’s almost award winning match program, The Ave. This weekend we welcome our feature guests, being Takapuna AFC on Saturday and Hamilton Wanderers on Sunday. Welcome to Joe and Steve and their teams respectively. I don’t need to tell you how big the Men’s NRFL game on Saturday between Ellerslie and Takapuna is, both teams will desperately want the win and we may see a pretty interesting match up. Sunday is big for another reason, this is the first game of the 2nd round for Women’s NRFL Premier and it’s a chance for both teams to see how they have progressed in the last 7 weeks. Of course Ellerslie had a flying start to the first game of the season with a 3-0 halftime lead against Wanderers but almost lost everything as the Hamilton side put in a superb second half shift and both teams had to settle for a draw. Up in the clubrooms we have some exciting news as we have managed to do a deal with local brewer “Isthmus” and we will now be selling their XPA beer. It’s great to support a local business and we hope you will give it a try (responsibly of course). A special mention to all the photographers who take photos of our games, in particular to JC who works for Suburbs and took some amazing photos of our Women’s NRFL team when they played the Lilywhites, check his website out for more - jcphotographynz.com

10 An intriguing first half with the teams locked at 0-0 at halftime didn't accurately portray the quality of the goals we would see in the second half as Jade Parris who had been guilty of spurning some chances in the first half got the opening goal before Leigh Aitken equalised for the Ponies with an excellent goal. Rebecca Burrows grabbed the lead for the Lilywhites straight back before an emphatic strike from Tayla O'Brien from the edge of the area locked in the points for the Madills Farm side. There was no respite for "The Ponies" after their heavy loss against Auckland United last weekend to now face defending champions Eastern Suburbs who after a slightly indifferent start to the season are now on a roll. Also perhaps slightly motivated by a loss in pre-season to "The Ponies" and of course it's a derby game as well! Ellerslie were dealt a blow in the week leading up to this game with Abby Murphy ruled out due to unavailability, but we were able to welcome back Courtney who was back after illness last week there were no other player issues as Alejo continues to do a great job in conditioning and injury prevention. With Suburbs likely to field their strongest lineup we knew we had to play much better than last week to get anything out of this game, and we had to not concede early (or preferably not at all) as we knew our backline would be under pressure from the triple threat of Hannah Pilley (in her last game), Tayla O'Brien and Jade Parris. That proved somewhat difficult as Suburbs piled on a few chances in the first half, with the first one the result of a nice piece of play down the Lilywhites left side and ended up with a shot being pushed just wide of the back post. Pilley had the next chance as she snuck in behind Deb who had tucked across to give cover, a Suburbs long ball from the back was just too high for Anita and it skipped through to Pilley, but an excellent recovery run from Debs put her under pressure and she hit her shot underpowered and right to Erin in goal.
11 That wasn't going to be Erin's last involvement, as she was quickly called into action again as a teasing through ball found Jade Parris, Erin had spotted the through ball early but wasn't sure she could make up the ground, and her hesitation had left her in a tricky position as Jade lined up her shot - but using every millimeter of her long reach she pushed the shot which was destined for the top apex of the goal away for a corner. That moment might have dwelled on the Suburbs two-time golden boot winners mind as she was played in again, this time with a clever reverse pass from Tayla O'Brien. Kim did well to recover and force Jade to take a shot from wide, but again her shot was underpowered and straight at Erin in goal. While Jade Parris wasn't having much luck with her shooting, she was finding plenty of space, this time she identified a large gap in the backline between Kim and Tayla and Rebecca Burrows found her with a perfect lofted pass. Credit to the Ellerslie fullback Tayla who had been caught out of position but she raced back and put pressure on Jade to take her shot, which she didn't strike cleanly as it bobbled out of play wide of the near post.
The narrative continued however as Parris was in the right place yet again as a Lilywhites forward flicked on a lofted pass, which left Parris one on one with Erin, but she again fluffed her shot and Erin was able to easily gather the bobbling ball and kill the attack. While Parris was clearly frustrated by not being able to find the finish she wanted, "The Ponies" were concerned as there was a large number of chances stacking up and it would have been fool-
12 ish to think the Suburbs markswoman was not going to find her shooting boots sooner or later. However there was enough time in the first half for Parris to have one more go - a Suburbs corner was cleared but no pressure from the Ellerslie side pushing out meant the ball was popped back into the box and found Parris with no marker at the back post, admittingly this was one of her harder chances as she had to side volley a bouncing ball, but her effort ended up being a side foot chip which lolli-popped into Erin's waiting arms.
That was pretty much halftime as the Ponies came off the field happy with the clean sheet but knowing they had to do a bit more to compete in the game - no real chances of note in that first 45 and a number of decent chances to Suburbs was not a good recipe for staying in the game. The Suburbs goalkeeper at this point had really only come into play cleaning up through balls and dealing with a few crosses, but her high line had done a great job of compressing the large Michaels Ave field and made it tricky for Ellerslie to find space to unleash their top scorer Britany Cunningham-Lee. Back to the subplot in the first half, which focused on Jade Parris and her profligacy in front of goal, like any good hollywood movie (think The Usual Suspects) there was a twist and 7 mins into the second half Parris opened her account for the game, and in the process started a flurry of goals. I would love to describe this goal to you, however as luck would have it I not only missed seeing the goal live, I also missed it on camera so there is no official record of it, however with the narrative being the way it had been, it was probably her hardest chance of the game and she absolutely smashed it in... I dunno. Ellerslie were not happy conceding that goal and put their foot on the gas, desperate to find a way back into the game - then finally Britney managed to escape the prison of white shirts she had been living in, expertly wardened by Rebekah van Dort as she picked up a quick throw in from Annabelle - using her pace and strength Cunningham-Lee rolled her marker and drove past the Suburbs left back and delivered a perfect low hard cross to the middle of the goal, where Leigh had made an excellent run from the left and infront of her defender and guided the ball home just as
13 the suburbs cover arrived - a classy finish to match some classy setup play. The celebrations from the large Ellerslie crowd, including a rendition of "Oh Ellerslie" from the Iguana's (Ellerslie's #1 reptilian based team) was cut short as the Lilywhites showed the class of champions as they retook the lead within 3 minutes of conceding - this goal did have an element of luck to it, but the finish was all class. After finding a strikers feet on the edge of the area a tackle from an Ellerslie player ricocheted the loose ball back to the pressing Burrows who was then tackled by another Ellerslie player but such was her determination she picked up that ricochet as well - with only Erin in goal to beat she smashed her shot past the Ellerslie keeper and into the top far corner of the net. There wasn't long between that goal and the final goal for the Ponies to rue that defensive error as Tayla O'Brien won the ball in midfield off Lily (which is normally easier said than done) and lined up a shot from 3 or 4 meters outside the box with her right foot and sent a bullet into the back of the net which Erin couldn't keep out such was the power. That was the scoring concluded and the defending champions locked in all three points as they consolidated their 3 point lead at the top of the table, over Hamilton Wanderers who are "The Ponies" next opposition as we start the 2nd round of games. Despite the last two losses the Ellerslie side have still a lot to play for, and this game against Wanderers will be a good test of our progress (and theirs) so far this season.
14 Reaching Round 7 of the Men’s NRFL Division One, Ellerslie were still on the hunt for their first win of the season. Following last week’s draw against Mt Albert Ponsonby, Fred de Jong stepped down as head coach to focus on his role as Ellerslie's Director of Football, with Munith Naidu taking over the reigns. Naidu’s first match in charge saw the Ellerslie lads take on Manurewa AFC at The Ave, but a dream start for the new boss wasn’t to be as the score stayed locked at 0-0 right up to the final whistle.
It was a different sight in the dugout at the weekend, as we saw Munith Naidu lead the lads for the first time this season. We all warmly thank Fred de Jong for his 56-game long service as head coach, and can’t wait for what new stars he unearths in his role as Director of Football within the club. Change is always scary and exciting, but I’m sure everyone is keen to see what Naidu brings to Ellerslie and the Men’s squad as they fight to get out of the bottom two. In his first game in charge, there were a few changes to the team that took on Manurewa. Denny Twigg came in for his first start as left fullback, pushing Jordan Bresler to the bench, while Rei Ogawa-Bracey remained on the right. Andre Munro-Wilson was unavailable, which gave Conrad Benefield a chance to come in as CDM, while Anton Moore retained his spot at the back with skipper Seb Poelman. Josh Lai switched out from the left to settle into an attacking midfield role alongside Dylan Horgan, with Alex Clark also taking a seat on the bench. Adam Paulsen and Rowan Corbett held their starting spots, and after scoring a goal
15 last week, Rory Kelly came back into the starting XI. Ryan Morrow was on the bench with Aalok Paudel, and newcomer Hamish Grey, who was called up for the first time in 2020. So Naidu made a couple of tweaks to the team in order to play the boys in a way better suited to his system, and that was evident as the men in red came out organised and clearly hungry for a win. Despite only having a week with the new coach, the Ponies all looked to be on the same page, evident through some well-executed passing patterns. A few goal-scoring opportunities were created, but the biggest one came in the 28th minute when Manurewa tried to play out from their own half. Lai was able to get a toe in for Horgan to collect before linking with Kelly, who took a touch and then offloaded back to Lai. Manurewa's fullback had come in to pick up Kelly when he had the ball, which left a large gap on the right for Corbett to recognise and run into. Lai, with the ball at his feet, played a pinpoint pass through the backline for Corbett to gather. Corbett let it roll to his right foot before hitting it low towards near post but Manurewa keeper Felix Sorge-Stratton was able to get a hand to it and push it wide. Other than a few half-chances, the first half saw no goals as both teams headed into the sheds. Ellerslie looked well organised for the most part, though there were moments where it was obvious there are still some kinks to iron out, which I’m sure will come as the boys get more familiar with Naidu and his playing style. Manurewa were equally as organised, utilising neat passing triangles to make their way up the field to get themselves into goal-scoring
16 positions. Thanks to some solid defending at the back and a couple of key saves by Kyryl Bolharyn, the away team's opportunities were snuffed out. With no changes at halftime, the second spell started much like the first. There was a missed opportunity in the first 15 minutes of the half from Ellerslie, and a few close calls from Manurewa. Still, both teams failed to find the back of the net. For most of the second 45, Ellerslie looked to have the upper hand as they utilised their high and wide players to drive towards goal. Benefield looked confident in his role, while Horgan and Lai linked up well to manoeuvre their way through the blue and yellow defence. Horgan showed his class with his tidy ball work, constantly creating headaches for the away team. Corbett was unlucky not to put away a few of his chances, as his shots looked much cleaner compared to previous weeks. One of his best finishes unfortunately came seconds after an offside whistle was blown, robbing him of the opener. On another day, Ellerslie could have been up by a few goals but for the efforts of Manurewa's Sorge-Stratton between the sticks, who kept his lads in the game. With the game still goalless at the 73rd minute, Naidu finally looked to his bench. Kelly was given a rest after a big shift, as Nadiu brought on Clark to sit in the middle, with Lai pushing out wide. This brought a different dynamic to the game, but it still wasn’t enough to break the tie. With ten minutes to go, the momentum started to switch as Manurewa used up the remain-
17 der of their substitutes to inject some much-needed energy. Naidu refrained from making any more changes and outside of Clark, kept the same men on the field. This allowed the team to keep their cohesion as they absorbed wave after wave of pressure from Manurewa, who were on the hunt for a goal to finally break the stalemate. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be as both teams had to settle with sharing the points when the man in the middle blew his whistle to mark full time. It was disappointing that Ellerslie couldn’t find a goal to earn them three points, but there are positives to take away from the game. Twigg looked at home at left back and the shift he put in was impressive. Benefield proved dynamic as he showcased his ability to play as a CDM, and in turn earned himself Player of the Day, while Lai looked well utilised in the middle, playing nicely off Horgan. Corbett is getting closer to scoring and I’m sure we’ll see a goal from him in the next fixture. Poelman and Moore can only go from strength to strength as they build on their partnership with every game, while Bolharyn had a solid game between the sticks as he kept a clean sheet, which is all you can ask from your keeper. I’m not sure if it’s The Ave or the colours blue and yellow, but Saturday marked Ellerslie’s third draw at home and third draw against a team wearing a variation of those colours. Lets hope it’s a coincidence and not a curse, as the lads look to prepare for their next fixture at home against the bottom-placed, blue and yellow Takapuna AFC. Come on down at 3pm to support the Ponies as they try to find that elusive first win of the season.
