THE AVE - ISSUE 6 01st & 02nd August
NRFL DOUBLE HEADER
2 Welcome everyone to another issue of the almost award winning Match Program - “The Ave”. This weekends featured guests are Marty Rodwell and his Manurewa side and Mauro Donoso and his Eastern Suburbs side, please make yourself at home at Michaels Ave this weekend. There has been a bit of change on the mens side this past week with Munith stepping into the First Team role that was vacated by Fred de Jong who is focusing on his role as Director of Football. With the end of the first round of games looming this game against Manurewa and next weeks against Takapuna look pretty important - however on the bright side a good performance against top of the table MAP last week could signal a turn in fortune. On the Women’s side a loss last week (heavily) means this game for the Ponies is crucial to keep in touch with the leaders, who are infact Suburbs after they demolished previous leaders Forrest Hill last weekend. A big game for Ryan and his team, against a quality side - should be interesting. Welcome again to our newest Sponsor (for the Women’s Teams) - Number Eight Security - keep an eye on our socials for more about them!! Cheers Tim

10 UNITED DRAW LEVEL ON POINTS WITH THE PONIES AFTER CONVINCING WIN by ellerslieafc United came to Michaels Ave in red hot form, having won their two previous games (scoring 11 and conceding 1), and also broke an impressive unbeaten run for the Ponies at home (in the league), having last lost on the 13th May 2018 in a 1-0 loss to Central. United smashed 4 goals home in as good a first half performance as you will want to see and then battled hard in the second half when the Ponies made a comeback, with both sides scoring 2 second half efforts each. The big question for Ponies fans is could this result have been different if Ellerslie had been as clinical as United early on or were we just out played? Ryan and his coaching team had selected the same starting 11 which had ruthlessly dispatched Claudelands last weekend bar one player – which was Lily Taitimu who came back into the team and Courtney who unfortunately had been sick all week and was unable to build on her impressive debut start last weekend dropped out. Just like the Claudelands game Anita Trudgen had an early chance, this time the play developed down United’s left flank as Britney drove forward, her cross into the box was collected by Leigh Aitken who was able to wrap her foot around the ball and clip-pass to the back post where Trudgen had taken up a brilliant position. However with the goal wide open the finish was unable to be applied as the ball sailed over the crossbar. United who had also started well sent an early shot of their own over the bar before grabbing the first goal of the game as (I think) Stella Lawson grabbed the ball in midfield and took off towards our left back slot, she managed to create enough space once she got closer to the goal-line to deliver a perfect low cross into the 6 yard box where Martine Puketapu had managed to get across infront of her marker and applied a delicate yet assured finish to the cross to open the scoring for the merged entity. Ellerslie could have hit straight back as a slick move from the Ponies which started with Lily pinching the ball in midfield, her pass forward picked out Britney who had checked to show feet – she quickly laid a pass to Annabelle who had made a great supporting run forward, she in turn took a touch and slipped a pass to Leigh at the top of the box, Leigh let the ball come across her onto her left foot, but just couldn’t get the shot on target with the United keeper giving her plenty of the goal to aim for.
11 United could have gone another goal up, but Ellerslie had Erin Simperingham to thank for the score not being inflated, as she made a good diving save to her left and then not once but twice made point blank saves at the feet of the United player – the second shot had a bit of power behind it and left the Ellerslie skipper winded, but after a triple save most fans would agree she deserved a breather. Inspired by the bravery shown by their captain the Ponies went on a couple of raids, with Annabelle Pakieto having two half chances, on both occasions she managed to get off a decent shot but just couldn’t get her efforts on target. The game was finely poised at this point and both teams were having chances – United had a free kick in a great position on the edge of the box, in a central area after the referee had ruled Lily had handled the ball when charging down a shot on the edge of the area – However the resulting free kick didn’t call the busy Simperingham into action this time as it flew over the bar. United finally found the right key to unlock the Ponies backline in the 26th min as they picked off a loose touch from Tayla Hawes at right back and immediately played the ball to a United forward player who had checked off into space, with the Ponies backline split a perfect ball was played to Tessa Leong, who was immediately in-behind and one on one with Erin and calmly side footed her shot past the Ponies GK, with the earlier than expected shot seemly taking the GK by surprise. Then in this writers opinion came the goal that hurt the most in terms of staying in the contest – no more than 5 minutes later United grabbed a 3-0 lead when Stella Lawson had a hopeful shot from a meter or so outside the box with her weaker foot, but it was a stunner as it floated right into the top corner, just past Erin’s reach. Ellerslie had contributed to the goal with a sloppy clearance but when you see shots go top corner (from a weaker foot shot) you have to think the football gods are not with you. It was only 31 mins into the game so Ellerslie were desperate to get something back and turn the tide, central to that was Annabelle who started an attack with a powerful run out of midfield, which was stopped by United’s outstanding defender Ally Toailoa, but the Ponies were determined to grab a goal and Maddy personified that by winning the ball back in the United final third – which then saw Britney and Leigh create a chance for Annabelle to have a shot just inside the box, which was just wide of the near post, but a good sign from the Ponies. Then came the sucker punch – after Lily had won a important near post corner clearing a corner, Ellerslie were unable to stop United from working the ball wide and delivering another cross – this cross wasn’t
12 that good but it came at an awkward height for an Ellerslie defender who was only able to bring the ball down just outside the 6 yard box. A perfect first touch from Isabella Richards who was the nearest player to the loose ball set herself up for a wicked strike that literally went in the back of the net through a roughly ball sized gap at the near post between the frame of the goal and Erin’s long limbs – as Fred de Jong would say, that shot was up where the spiders live! That made the contest 4-0 at the 40th minute mark and you could tell there were some frustrated Ponies players and coaching staff as they headed into the sheds at halftime. Some tactical changes and refreshing the team seemed to do the trick at halftime as the Ponies came out and immediately put United under pressure as substitute Petra Buyck unleashed a wicked left foot shot which didn’t quite have enough curl to hit the top corner. Her next interaction resulted in a goal, Britney won the ball high in midfield and drove past the first defender before playing a sharp wall pass with Petra to take the final defender out of the picture. The United keeper tried her best to rush out and close Britney’s shooting angle but was only successful in taking some pace off the shot as it dribbled across the line to give Ellerslie a glimmer of hope in the game. Any faint hopes of a comeback faded when United launched another raid down our left flank – once the attacker had found some space in-behind Charli a cutback was played into the box towards Martine Puketapu – it would have been a tough angle to shoot from with two Ellerslie players around her – so she stepped over the cutback and let the ball run to Kate Duncan who with no defenders around her smashed a right foot shot high into the net past Simperingham to restore the 4 goal lead. The game had evolved into a end to end affair and it was Ellerslie’s turn as they once again pulled a goal back, Maddy won a turnover in our own third, passed the ball to Annabelle who drove forward and then found Maddy with a little ball inside – she in turn found Anita steaming down the left – Anita took the pass in her stride and powered past the fullback before unleashing a strong left foot shot which beat the United keeper and hit the back of the net. United continued to have chances, in one particular one Erin was called on to make a last ditch save with her legs to keep Ellerslie only 3 behind and within potential striking distance.
13 However United had too much class upfront and it turned out it was only a matter of time before Martine Puketapu scored again – and while the buildup for this 6th goal was a bit lucky, it was a quality finish from the leading scorer in the NRFL Women’s Premier League. The goal came when the left winger for United cut in and tried to pick out Martine around the penalty spot, Kim almost intercepted the pass with her head but just couldn’t reach it, but her efforts meant Martine wasn’t able to control the pass and her touch fell loose in the box, but another United player was he first to react and she fired the ball back across the box where Martine threw herself at the ball and slid the ball home.
Ellerslie did have chances to reduce the margin, one chance in particular came initially from Kat Gow (who was on debut) won the ball in midfield and the ball made it’s way out to Britney on the right wing, and she found space for a cross which Maddy connected with but her shot which was guided towards goal was blocked. From the resulting corner Kim Oosterbeek rose highest and won a header, which she headed down and the ball bounced infront of the United players on the goaline, but the defender on the post was able to react and head the ball away – that header fell loose in the box and Kim tried to follow up and finish off what she started but a desperate United defence was able to block her shot and then clear their lines.
After a couple more chances at each end saw the game play out and the referee blew the final whistle, which was equal parts relief and disappointment. With another big game coming this weekend as we host our neighbours and league leaders Suburbs at Michaels Ave – come and check it out at 3pm on Sunday.
14 DRAMA ERUPTS AT ANDERSON PARK AS PONIES TAKE POINT FROM MT ALBERT PONSONBY by ellerslieafc Round Six of the NRFL Division 1 saw Mt Albert Ponsonby host Ellerslie on a cold Friday night at Anderson Park. In a game marred by controversy, it wasn’t meant to be for either team, as they had to settle on sharing the points. With a whopping 12 cards dished out, there are many talking points about the Friday fixture, which saw the home team go down to 8 players as they fought tooth and nail to hold on to their point. After a dream start The Ponies went up in the 10th minute through a Dylan Horgan free kick, but the home side were quick to fire one back through Darren White, who would later be seen sent off. Scott Wallace put MAP up 2-1 just before half time, but substitute Rory Kelly was able to find his target to equalise in the second half. After going down 5-0 to Albany United last week, it was going to be a momentous task going up against table-toppers Mt Albert Ponsonby, who were coming into this match having won their opening five games. Having tried a new formation last week, Fred de Jong opted to continue with that, but made a couple of changes to the squad. Rei Ogawa-Bracey came back into the mix, which pushed Jordan Bresler over to left back instead of his usual right. Anton Moore, previously a fullback, switched into centre-back to partner skipper Seb Poleman, giving Conrad Benefield a rest on the bench. The game started at a high intensity, with a decent sized crowd gathered on the clubroom balcony and along the sideline. It was a dream start for Ellerslie when a free kick was awarded just outside the box in the 10th minute. Unsurprisingly, Dylan Horgan stepped up to take it. The No.10 was clinical in his delivery as he whipped it over the wall and into the back of the net, giving the Ponies an early lead. From here, the intensity stepped up and didn’t ease off until well after the full-time whistle.
Ellerslie were unable to withstand the home side’s relentless pressure, and the boys in gold and blue equalised in the 18th minute through Darren White. A ball was put into the box and the Ellerslie defence were unable to deal with it, leaving White to knock it home to get his men back in the game. Ellerslie looked much more organised compared to last week, and it was good to see the boys playing proactive football. Despite conceding, Moore and Poleman worked well together and provided much needed depth in order to shut down any balls in behind. Poleman especially was reading the game well, as he con-
15 stantly stepped forward to break play down when the MAP forwards were picking the ball up deep. It’s easy to understand why the home team hadn’t lost a game to date, as their passing was quick and organised, finding triangles all around the park to move up the field and put themselves in goal-scoring opportunities. With the score locked at 1-1, and MAP fighting for their sixth win in as many games and Ellerslie fighting for much needed points to drag them out of relegation, the game started to get antsy. The challenges started to get more aggressive from both sides, thus resulting in the referee dealing out a yellow to Ben McCafferty for a heavy tackle on Ellerslie midfielder Andre Munro-Wilson. Alex Clarke put a great ball into the danger zone, but much to his dismay, Poleman’s header flashed wide of the target. In the 34th minute, after mounting pressure on the away team, MAP were able to find their second goal of the night after an Ellerslie mistake. The backline had been faultless in dealing with balls in behind up until this point, but a miscommunication saw two Ellerslie defenders clash as they tried to shut down the incoming attack. The ball carrier managed to flick the ball onwards despite the collision and the referee played advantage. From here, the home side drove the ball down the left as Ellerslie scrambled to recover. It wasn’t meant to be though, as a flat, pinpoint cross was delivered across the face of the goal where Scott Wallace was waiting unmarked. Keeper Kyryl Bolharyn did well to track it across, and despite getting a hand to it, Wallace’s shot was too powerful. Wallace proved to be dangerous all game, and gave Bresler lots of work to do as he constantly ran at him throughout the night. It was obvious the Ellerslie men really wanted it in this match, as they put their bodies on the line and went in hard on all their challenges. It was a far cry from the passive defending last week and good to see. The match was proving to be a great watch as the half wore on, but in the 44th minute things took a turn for the worse. After some scrambling in the box, the ball went out for an Ellerslie goal kick. As the teams retreated, there was commotion in the box and Ellerslie supporters were beside themselves as they watched MAP’s Stephen Carmichael punch Ellerslie’s Alex Clarke in the head. The coaching box, surrounding players and the supporters whom had all seen it, were shouting for action to be taken. The referee, who it appeared had not witnessed the incident, went over to his assistant to discuss. After some back and forth, it was decided the contact warranted expulsion, so the referee called Carmichael over to show him a straight red card.
16 Seemingly off the ball, and stemming from nothing, no one at the time really knew what caused Carmichael to lash out the way he did. Whether Clarke did or said something is unknown, but to make aggressive contact like that doesn’t have a place in the game, and the match officials can only make decisions based on what they see, so an early shower for the MAP No. 10 was deserved. Reeling from that altercation, it’s no surprise Clarke went in for a heavy challenge on the next play, earning himself a yellow on the stroke of halftime. For both coaches, it was probably a relief to hear the halftime whistle as they headed into the sheds to settle their lads and regroup for the upcoming 45.
With only one change at halftime from either team, we saw Josh Lai replaced by Rory Kelly. Both teams came out firing in the second spell, as Ellerslie searched for their equaliser and Mt Albert Ponsonby fought to keep their lead with only 10 men on the pitch. The Ponies were finally able to break down the boys in gold and blue after taking a quick free kick in their attacking half. The ball made its way down to the baseline and Ellerslie floated one into the box. Neither team were able to make contact with it, so Moore chased it down out the back and made a last ditch effort to fire it back towards goal. Again, it popped out for substitute Patrick Fahey to bounce it back into the mix. Arguably one of the shortest on the pitch, it was Kelly who managed to emerge out of the mess and impressively head the ball. The travelling supporters eagerly watched on as the ball sailed towards goal and dipped just under the crossbar, earning Kelly his second goal of the season. From here, the game ramped up even more, and you could feel the anticipation around the ground, especially as the crowd got louder. As always in football, when games get more intense and the passion comes out, there is a tendency for challenges to get heavier. It’s not abnormal for players to put their body on the line, to ensure they do everything in their power to not concede in such a tight affair. With challenges going both ways, and the referee already having dished out numerous cards, there comes a point when they miss some calls. However, that is football and you can’t have everything go your way.
Unfortunately, some players can’t accept that and in the 72nd minute, as MAP tried to make a substitution, goal-scorer White looked to be headed for a rest. Saying something to the man with the whistle as he went, he was called back for a chat. After having picked up an earlier yellow, there was shock when the referee dug into his pocket for a second yellow and then promptly pulled out the card no player ever wants to see. With a big crackdown on dissent towards match officials, it’s unsurprising he was shown a second yellow
17 for what he said towards the referee. In itself, the disrespect towards the referee was completely unnecessary, but already on a yellow and on his way out for a substitution, the ill-discipline resulted in his team going down to nine men. Not long after this, there was yet more controversy as MAP’s Nicholas Hindson travelled into the box after rounding Ogawa-Bracey. The Ellerslie fullback tried to recover, and as Hindson dribbled towards goal, Ogawa-Bracey made contact with the back of him, resulting in Hindson going to ground. The balcony of MAP supporters was irate as the referee called play on and deemed there was nothing in the challenge. The Ellerslie supporters breathed a lucky sigh of relief because it did look like a clear foul against Hindson. Sometimes in football, you get lucky with some of the calls made, and in previous weeks that has not been us so you just have to take them as they come and move forward. Ellerslie had numerous chances that they couldn’t finish unfortunately, even against a side with only nine on the pitch. It was soon to be eight though, as in the 94th minute, MAP No. 6 Simon Arms received his second yellow for a reckless foul that saw the referee hand out his third red card of the game, much to the anger of the home team supporters. It was eleven versus eight for a few minutes but the remaining MAP players fought tooth and nail to ensure they came away with something to remain unbeaten.
It was a game full of ups and downs, and despite the expulsions the match had the kind of intensity that makes football a great spectator sport. In saying that, it is never okay for spectators, or anyone for that matter, to launch scathing attacks on the match officials as they walk from the field. Yes, there had been some banter between the home and away supporters throughout the game, but that is a good-natured give and take situation, and when the fulltime whistle is blown, that usually means the banter is done too. People may not always agree with the match officials, but that doesn’t mean they have the right to stand on the balcony and launch a verbal attack at them as they head into the sheds. At the end of the day, they’re just trying to do their jobs and they’re humans prone to making mistakes. We should be careful in remembering that without them, we wouldn’t have football at all. It was good to see an Ellerslie supporter call them out on their unnecessary comments and we have to give respect to the Mt Albert Ponsonby player who stood up to the culprits, as it can’t be easy to confront

Ellerslie Red Fury came about when the Red Comets and Fury teams merged into one team approximately 3 years ago. We are a bunch of enthusiastic, competitive, social and kind hearted women who enjoy the commadory that Sunday football brings every week. This season we have started off with a draw, two losses and two wins making us currently fourth on the table. We are hoping for another win this weekend to keep the winning streak going. Our current squad has some new members this year which are fitting in nicely. We are continuously working on our game play and getting the ball in the net.
28 Its Business Time! Ellerslie Business Time has been around for well over a decade now with the teams age starting to show through. We only wish our bodies kept up with our minds. Having started as a young team post uni really taking on the competition and winning several high division competitions, we have mellowed out a little but still aim to win more games than lose. The team has naturally evolved throughout the years gaining and losing people but all staying close friends, and now is a great way to socialize each weekend and get a run around without having to chase the wives or kids. The name Business Time came from a popular Flight of the Conchords song which has a little bit of innuendo associated with it. We played it jokingly for some internationals that were playing for us who loved the song, and the name stuck. After all 2 minutes in heaven is better than 1 minute in heaven (for those that know the song). The season so far has been a little up and down with a few new additions trying to find their connections with the existing teammates. We have had a great win against a top of the table team but then drew to a bottom table and lost to the mid table. We started the season with 8 defenders (the older you are the further back on the field you go) and of our 7 injuries, all of them are the oldies at the back!
29 We are loving the excuse to get out of home, have a run around and a beer afterwards with some good company. And a few too many of us are looking forward to over 40's in the next few years!

The Reserves had another big win - this time 6-2 over MAP
36
A last minute penalty saw the Reserves lose 2-1
37 your own supporters, as well as to the other MAP players who took accountability and admitted their supporters had let the club down. It’s unfortunate that the game was marred by the incident after the fulltime whistle, but despite that it was still an exciting game to watch. Coach Alan Hindson will have a few things to think over as he analyses the ill-discipline in three of his players being sent off. Aside from that, you have to give huge credit to the eight men that stayed on the pitch and saved themselves a point. Ellerslie will look back and wonder how they didn’t secure the win after being at a numerical advantage, but there’s a reason MAP currently sit at the top of the table and we saw that on Friday night. The boys in gold and blue adapted well to the challenges thrown their way and still managed to create goal-scoring opportunities and as a football fan, you have to admire that. Despite failing to secure all three points, Ellerslie can be happy to get something off a currently unbeaten team. Midfielder Munro-Wilson commented post-match that “the boys looked much better than in previous weeks and we can hopefully take this in our stride and get a few more results in the coming weeks.” Moore and Poleman looked solid at the back, so it will be interesting to see whether this partnership continues, as you’d assume it only gets stronger from here. You can’t fault Clark, Horgan and Munro-Wilson this week as they delivered much better performances. Clark was consistent, Horgan is finding the right balance between playing simple and using his skill to create chances from nothing and Munro-Wilson was clinical in his switching off the ball. It was also good to see the attacking players more aggressive in their defending this week. Overall, it was a dramatic night at Anderson Park. There was lots of passion around the park, but it’s always unfortunate when it gets taken too far, and takes away from the actual football. The men in red will look to put this game behind them, get their heads down and work towards their next fixture against Manurewa AFC at The Ave this coming Saturday. The lads are yet to register a win this season, but if they build on how they played on Friday, I’m sure we’ll see that change very soon.
