PHOTO & TWEET OF THE WEEK We are back at the Ave in two weeks time to see the lads take on East Coast Bays as they look to build up some points in the 2nd round.
4 WELCOME TO NORTHERN ROVERS Women’s NRFL is back at Michaels Ave after a run of a few away games in a row and our opposition today are Northern Rovers who have had some interesting games recently, with a big win over Suburbs taking them into 2nd and a hotly contested Cup game to be played against Springs to be scheduled - there is lot going on for Rovers. So we wish Ben and Andy a warm welcome to Michaels Ave - at the moment both teams have won a game each (both wins by the away teams) so this could be a very interesting game, Ellerslie need the points to jump off the bottom of the table and Rovers will want to stay in 2nd so no shortage of desire from both teams. Personally it’s always good to see Andy Clay back at Michaels Ave, Andy was my first coach at Ellerslie in the Reserves - I’m sure he doesn’t remember me for my football but it’s always a great reminder to me about how tight knit the football community in Auckland is - there is always someone you know from the other team. The other feature match this weekend is the Reserves clash - the Ellerslie Reserves top the table as the coaching staff have done a great job mixing, youth and potential with experience and performance - it’s true we may have a slightly older average age than some of the other teams but I think we are doing a great job keeping people in the game, which is always a challenge - so great work to the coaches and the players in the Reserves team, your doing awesome. Having cast my eye over the fixtures for this weekend, the opposition team name that stands out for me this week is the West Auckland Wookies, a bit of alliteration is always welcomed. Good luck to all teams Cheers Tim Adams (Chairman)

After missing last weekends cup game due to illness, Anita bounced back in this game with a typical powerful and energetic performance, plus a quality assist.

12 WOMEN'S FIRST TEAM: LONG DISTANCE GOALS DECIDE BOTTOM OF THE TABLE BATTLE A few changes to the team from coach Ryan Shiffman was the first thing that caught the eye when the teams were announced for this bottom of the table clash, against a team that Ellerslie had traditionally struggled against. A new combination in the front line of Britney, Kat and Annabelle was picked to try and see if we can get our scoring groove back, having as a team struggled to put goals away. Mia Grgicevich who had a good impact off the bench last weekend against Franklin took a starting spot alongside Cat Pretty and Leigh while Anita had recovered from illness to take her spot at left back alongside regulars Kim, Tayla and Marie. On the bench there was an attack focus with Hollie Leona, Kim Mesias, Jemma McCormick, Ella James and Charli Collard. Luckily for the ladies the First Team game had been scheduled for the #2 field which at Porritt is the main field and is in wonderful condition, perhaps the best field in the NRFL at the moment and an absolute dream to play on - a bit of a far cry from the pitch the Reserves played on, some adjustment required for Hollie and Jemma. As per the standard Hamilton vs Ellerslie match the Ponies came out flying and to be honest could have scored a few in this period, with Annabelle, Britney and Leigh all having decent chances, in a game where the Ponies midfield were passing the ball around well and Anita in particular was causing issues with her runs forward from deep. At the other end Ellerslie didn't look that comfortable however with the rain and the firm surface having created a tricky skid on bounce effect for Kim and Marie to deal with, and at times they looked uncomfortable with that. Despite that it was Ellerslie who as per tradition opened the scoring in the contest as Anita gathered a loose ball after Leigh had tried to put a dropped ball from the keeper away, only to have her shot blocked by a defender and then cleared. Anita got her head up and went for one of those long range missiles only Anita can hit, but calibrated slightly wrong and smashed her shot into Annabelle Pakieto's back - such was the power of the shot and the angle of Annabelle's back that the deflection took a ramping effect and didn't take off much of the power on the ball, as it flew up and over the Hamilton keeper and down the inside of the back of the net.

Officially the goal is Annabelle's - but it's very true in this case that without Anita's assist there would have been no goal. Ellerslie were able to hold that 6th minute lead for another 20 mins when Ellerslie's nemesis Chelsea Elliott equalised the game (in the 26th minute, if your math was good you figured that out already) when she took a free kick from some way out and absolutely smashed the skin off the ball, and got it on target - unfortunately Erin just couldn't deal with the pace of the ball and the game was level. Second halves against Hamilton have not been our friend and while we didn't come out of this game with a win the performance across both halves was encouraging, just a lack of a finish here and there cost us. Hamilton sealed the three points in the 71st minute as she smashed home a left foot shot on an angle from just inside the box - which somehow found it's way through a mass of players who had been in the box contesting a corner which was partially cleared by Ellerslie after a wee bit of a goal mouth scramble. Having gone behind in the game the Ponies rallied and brought on some reinforcements as Kim Mesias, Ella James and Charli Collard all took the field and to be fair we did have a good period to close the game out with a few decent chances - Kim with probably the closest effort as she hit the crossbar with a shot from just inside the box. Unfortunately the curse of Hamilton away is still very prevalent and this result has left us bottom of the table but with just under half the season to go (including two more games against Hamilton - 1 x cup, 1 x league) there are plenty of points on the floor for us to pick up - we have to just keep going! Media Picks Woman of the Match: The only game this weekend without a hatrick which makes the Woman of the Match pick tough - but we are going to agree with the coaches on this one (mostly because we suggested this person on the day) and agree that Anita Trudgen with a worldie of an assist and a massive physical effort on the back of being really sick was huge.

19 TWEET OF THE WEEK
I for one can wait for the next World Cup or Euro’s, such has been the painful banter from Coach Cal about Scotlands chance, having been robbed in this tournament. “If Billy Gilmour hadn’t been ruled out Scotland would have won the whole thing”
Sadly he isn’t joking…...
PHOTO OF THE WEEK Callum, did you see the state of that field? Aye Hollie I did - looks like a fine potato field to me.
