PHOTO & TWEET OF THE WEEK It’s back to the boys next time out as they take on Metro FC in what could be a very tight game! Can’t wait!

4 WELCOME TO HAMILTON WANDERERS Todays Women’s NRFL fixture see’s Steve Cox and his Hamilton Wanderers team arrive at Michaels Ave - Wanderers have been in hot form in the third round, beating us twice (1 league, 1 cup), Springs and Auckland United to put themselves in for a chance at NwL.

Unless both teams qualify for NwL this will be our final game against Wanderers in the 2021 season, having played them 4 times already with a 3 losses and a draw in the record books - it’s pretty clear why the team consider Hamilton to be our boogie team. The Reserves on the other hand have fared much better against the sole team from the Waikato and with Wanderers sitting in 2nd place in the league, this game becomes crucial in the title race with only a few games left. It’s cup weekend for most of the rest of the club with some interesting match ups unfortunately the fields at Michaels Ave are still feeling a bit worse for wear so there are not many games on at The Ave with games being moved to Point England, and Simson Reserve. Hard to pick the team name this week with Auckland United Tikki Mo Salah and Pukekohe Pook E Monsters leading the way, with previous winners Auckland United Boca Seniors also in the mix - we will leave you guys to decide!

Best of luck to all the teams this weekend, play hard but play fair and we will see you up in clubrooms after the game for a cold drink and some hot chips! Cheers Tim Adams CHAIRMAN

FRONT COVER: Charli and Kez - two of our super defenders who played against Hamilton in the Kate Sheppard Cup match BACK COVER: It’s a defender union as this photo shows Faith in full on defence mode

12 WOMEN’S FIRST TEAM: BRITNEY’S BRACE VITAL IN BEATING AUCKLAND UNITED Ellerslie entered the last round of what can only be described as an epic NRFL Women’s Premier League season in 5th place, but knowing that a loss against Auckland United would see the Ponies drop to last spot and all but kiss goodbye to any chance of finishing in the top four and being one of the 4 NRFL Women’s teams to compete in the new NwL. Luckily for the Ponies, Auckland United were in a middle of a nasty injury crisis with Bree Johnson, skipper Jess Philpot, Kate Duncan, Alosi Bloomfield, Emma Leaming, Stella Lawson and Sophie Bradley all missing – but they still fielded a decent team with Tessa Leong in particular very dangerous with Ally Toailoa solid at the back. Ellerslie on the other hand had managed to avoid any major injuries and were almost able to name a team with no injury unavailability, with only Courtney Rowse ruled out by injury, while Ella James wasn’t available for selection again this week. That meant we picked the same starting XI as our last game (a win over Western Springs), with the only changes coming on the bench as the Holly/ie combo dropped out and were replaced by Faith and Nadia and Kat Gow who was unavailable last week took the 5th bench spot. It’s fair to say Ellerslie have not had the best of luck this season, with a lot of chances in most games but not a lot of goals to show for our attacking skills – however one area we have made a lot of improvement on is how dangerous we are from corners, and the games opening goal game from one such set piece as Marie Green swept home a low hard shot from a Leigh Aitken driven corner. Earlier in the game Kim Mesias was unmarked in the box and made a darting run to meet a near post corner to open the scoring (similar to her goal against Western Springs) but she couldn’t direct her effort on target. Between that effort and the opening goal Auckland United had a few chances to grab the first goal with the best chance falling to their best player and skipper Tessa Leong who was played through but due to the recovery from Tayla Hawes was only left with a tight angle to shoot from on her left foot and she couldn’t get enough power to trouble Erin Simperingham in goal who was determined to record a clean sheet in her last game for the NRFL season. Moments after that Erin was far less comfortable as a scorching shot from distance flew over her but smacked squarely into the cross bar and dropped into the box, which was tidied up by Marie Green – much to the relief of everyone in red – Utd had fired two warning shots and the Ponies needed to take heed. As the teams traded chances as the half wore on it was Kim Mesias who deserves a mention as she was constantly a thorn in the side of the Auckland United team with multiple shots in the opening 40 mins, and while she officially doesn’t have any contribution to the opening goal it was her shot which was blocked to win the corner we opened the scoring from.

It was the 42nd minute when that goal did arrive and it was a debut league goal to go alongside 2 cup goals for the defender in her debut NRFL Women’s Premier League season – and already she has established herself as mainstay in the team. During the first half Auckland United had also gone to their bench, to replace Charlotte Gordon with Jessie Matthews in what we hope wasn’t another injury for Mauro Donoso’s side – and with only the three players on the bench his squad was already pretty bare. *the COMET match report also shows Ellerslie made a first half sub but this is incorrect as this sub was made late in the second half. At halftime with a 1-0 lead the Ellerslie team and their coaches were happy with reward for their work but Auckland United had threatened and the Ponies knew they needed another goal or two to avoid some of the late drama they have experienced in the league this season.

ONTENTS

13

With no changes from either team during the break we were back into it with Anita Trudgen having the first chance of the 2nd stanza as she picked up a switch ball and instead of roaring down the sideline with her combination of pace and power she cut inside and drove past two defenders before taking an ambitious shot from about 4 or 5 meters outside the box – trying to replicate her wonder goal from the first game of the season! Unfortunately for her and all neutrals in the ground her shot had the power but not quite the accuracy as it flew past the right hand post. Auckland United to their credit almost drew level in the next highlight when a long range shot (the flavour of the day) was pushed away by Erin at full dive, but the first to react was a Utd player as she was left with time but a very poor angle to shot – perhaps if she had been able to move the ball to her left foot and open up the goal it could have been level but she trusted her right instead and the shot flew agonisingly across the face of the goal and out for a goal kick. After a couple more close efforts from Tessa Leong who was increasingly looking like someone on a one woman mission to score a goal the visitors grabbed a very important goal, and while the finish was excellent the chance came out of nothing – an over hit ball forward by Cat Pretty looked to be cleared by a Auckland United defender, who was being put under pressure by Kim Mesias, with the firey Ellerslie forward able to charge down the clearance and the loose ball fell to Britney with a defender on her back on the edge of the 18 yard box. With the defender not giving Brit a chance to get in behind she instead decided to use her strength and footwork to turn the defender inside out and thus created a half chance for herself on her right foot – with that shot being a low and hard effort that was bouncing along the Keith Hay Park surface and evaded Nadine Roberts in the Utd goal to give Ellerslie a 2-0 lead. Only 8 minutes later in the 69th minute the scoring was complete when Mia Grgicevich nicked possession in midfield before playing Leigh Aitken who had found some space a bit wider in midfield with no defender near her – as the Scottish star assessed her options infront of her Britney recognised the space the Utd backline were offering and she made a diagonal run across the backline which Leigh rewarded with a slip ball for Britney’s run, which resulted in a tricky one on one chance with Nadine, with the complication being the angle as she was probably only being offer the far post on her right foot which isn’t a great angle – however Britney was in scoring mood as she took her shot and was delighted to see the ball hit the far post, bounce back across the goal-line and hit the near post and go in. This was a killer blow for Utd in terms of points but the ladies in Black didn’t give up as they kept pushing for a consolation goal – only to be denied time after time by Erin Simperingham or her defenders as they knuckled down to try and record only a 2nd league clean sheet (with the previous one being against Utd as well). Thankfully for Erin in her last NRFL appearance for the season as she heads home to the states to visit family for the first time in a couple of years, we did grab the clean sheet and we moved one step closer to 4th place with a key clash in that goal coming next weekend as we take on Hamilton Wanderers at Michaels Ave – with Nadia Olla to debut in her place between the sticks.

Media Picks Woman of the Match: There are so many candidates for this award in what was not our tip top performance but in a match where players were effective in their roles which aided the teams efforts, sentimentally a big shout out to skipper Erin Simperingham in her final game of 2021, as well as an all action effort from Kim Mesias – but for this scribe honours go to Britney Cunningham-Lee who was as close to undefendable for Utd as we have seen her this season – can’t wait to see her do the same to Hamilton next weekend.

When the very first football club in Hamilton was formed in 1901 members chose "Wanderers" as the club's name and it had been known as such for more than 60 years. Effecting the 1964 amalgamation would obviously have required some concession by the parties, the club name being one of the issues. In its wisdom the Hamilton Wanderers executive accepted the name Hamilton AFC and teams took part in Waikato Football Association competitions as such. Meanwhile dissidents began action to start up another club with the Wanderers name and this culminated in an application to the Waikato Football Association for affiliation. After hearing a report from the Hamilton AFC in regards to their position with the name, the application was approved under the generic name of Wanderers AFC. This condition was imposed to make it clear that the new entity was not a revival of the old Hamilton Wanderers club which had become part of Hamilton AFC.
