4 WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE

It’s derby day in the NRFL Women’s Premier League as neighbours Eastern Suburbs make the short trip across Stonefields to Michaels Ave. 2022 has been somewhat different for todays two teams as Suburbs come into this game after receiving a heavy loss against Northern Rovers while Ellerslie finally got points in Hamilton after numerous close attempts. Stephen Hoyle’s team has had a few personnel changes from 2021 when they finished strong to take the title, but only someone foolish would think they are not one of the strongest teams in the league again, with experience and quality in all thirds of the park. For Ellerslie a fast start and goals from players who have stepped up from last season bodes well for another good game from the Ponies. Special mention to the Women’s Reserves who took another 3 points to go 2 wins from 2 games in their search to retain the title from last season.

Lastly another reminder that parking at Michaels Ave during the construction of our new clubrooms/changing rooms is pretty hectic and we strongly advise members to avoid the upper carparks, particularly on busy training and match days. 12 The women travelled to Hamilton hopeful to finally shake off the bad memories associated with heading south. The new season meant a new page to hopefully start a new trend of winning wonder. The Reserves kicked off the day with a strong 4-1 win over the hosts. Goals to Jess Marvin (2), Steph Jones and Sarah Jessup saw the girls find the goal-scoring prowess they enjoyed last season. They’ll feel hard done by to not come away with a clean sheet however as the one goal they conceded was a suspected offside but the home team had failed to supply a linesperson coming out of the half time break.

This dominant display set the scene for our Women’s First Team to take the field and follow in their footsteps. Only one change in the team saw Hollie Leona drop out through injury, making way for Sarah Carpenter to make her Ellerslie debut against her former Club. With that being the only change, this meant the team and coaching stuff were able to build on the momentum of the previous week’s big win over Tauranga. The game began quite evenly as both teams settled into the match. Hamilton to their credit, having only one week to train as a new team after their Kate Sheppard Cup Final loss, started the game strong. The absence of a few key players though seemed to catch up on them as they were punished in the 25th and 45th minute by Ellerslie winger Kat Gow. After shaking off her 20th minute shot that rattled the crossbar, Kat Gow did what she does best – a signature goal from the corner of the box that went up and over the new goalkeeper Alisha Perry. A classic move, she made a darting down the right before lobbing the ball over the keeper from the corner of the box.

13 Her second was a cleverly taken one on one with the goalkeeper. She rounded Perry who’d come far off her line before slotting the ball home. The away support waited with baited breath as the linesman had put his flag up, deeming Gow offside. However, after the man in the middle had gone over for a chat, he explained that a Hamilton defender had in fact played at the ball which played Gow onside. The goal stood and Ellerslie were happy to take the lead to two right on the stroke of halftime. The two nil scoreline made for a very nail-biting halftime but the added strength of our bench, made sure we were able to hold on to the final whistle and finally wash away all the painful memories associated with travelling to Hamilton. The women now have another monumental task as they face Premier giants Eastern Suburbs next Sunday at home. Surburbs are another team the Ponies have failed to beat in the Premier League so are hoping they’ll be able to continue their winning ways. We hope to see you all at The Ave for a 3pm start. Bring the noise!

Media Picks Woman of the Match: We don’t often stray away from the coaching staff’s pick (Kat Gow) but this weekend we having, giving our nod to goalkeeper Petra Wedlake. Having been asked to step up due to the absence of Nadia Olla, Wedlake has kept back-to-back clean sheets with this Hamilton game asking much more of her. Incredibly brave in the air, Wedlake snuffed out Hamilton’s go-to long range shots and crosses.
