THE AVE - ISSUE 3 11.04.21
ELLERSLIE AFC VS NORTHERN ROVERS
2 Welcome to another match weekend at Michaels Ave as we host Northern Rovers in Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier League action for the first time. The Women’s NRFL is a 4 round competition this year as the league is only 6 teams, but the early signs two rounds in is that it’s a tight league and the top 4 spots which lead to playing in the 1 round national league stage are up for grabs.
For spectators that means every game is crucial for the teams and that means we will going to see some intense games, already in our two games we have scored a last minute equaliser in our first game and lost to a 89th minute goal last weekend. In combination with the increased importance of the league this season we are trying to step up our social media game as well, so keep an eye on our Instgram page leading up the games each weekend and then pop over to twitter or follow along on our website (which has an embedded twitter feed) to see live updates from the games. But of course nothing beats the atmosphere of coming down and experiencing the game in person, and with plenty of seating around Michaels Ave #1 it’s a nice play to come and watch some afternoon football, especially now before the weather turns. After the game all spectators, along with all players and officials are welcomed to the after-match event in the clubrooms where you can sample our range of beers or grab some hot chips.
Finally best of luck to all teams this weekend! Cheers Tim Adams CHAIRMAN

12 WIND DOMINATES CAGEY AFFAIR AT KORIKORI PARK ON GOOD FRIDAY Hamilton Wanderers picked up their first win of the season as they came home with wet sails on Good Friday against your Ellerslie AFC Women’s Premier Team. A goal in the first half from centre back Kim Oosterbeek in a goal mouth scramble proved to not be enough on the board with the wind as two goals from Hamilton skipper Michaela Foster sealed all three points for her team. Earlier in the Reserves fixture the wind proved to be no problem for the Ponies as they put on two halves of 2-0 to grab their first win of the season, goals to Holly Marx (2), Charli Marvin and Abby Nicholson capped off an impressive game from the ressies who were missing their inspiration captain Tove Bennett.
Solid games from debutant Claire Alderton at centre back and skipper for the day Lauren McKenzie in goal made sure the clean sheet was kept to put the icing on the game. For the First Team game the wind did seem to shift slightly as it became more end to end, as during the Reserves game it seemed more diagonal across the pitch from corner flag to corner flag.
Ellerslie lined up with one change from our 2-2 draw in Round 1 against Auckland Utd as Annabelle Pakieto was ruled out by the medical staff and her starting spot went to the impressive Kim Mesias, with Lauren McKenzie called up to the bench to provide GK cover. If there was ever a game to bring out the clichés it was this one – as the game was very much a game of two halves with the wind proving difficult to play into
13 on the long-ish but lush Korikori park grass. Ellerslie were the first beneficiaries as they pegged Hamilton into their own end for much of the first half and looked threatening from a series of corners. It was one of those corners which was whipped into the 6 yard box and ended up in a good old fashioned goalmouth scramble, with the ball eventually ending up in the back of the net and the Ellerslie players all pointing to the long legs of Kim Oosterbeek as the scorer – it was good to have a visual aid to know who had scored as the officials declined to answer any questions from the sideline about who had scored, perhaps a sign of things to come. Wanderers keeper Rylee Godbold was in fine form and while she couldn’t do anything about the goal Ellerslie had scored, she made a number of excellent saves, including a memorable one from a long shot (from Cat Pretty) where she had to turn and run back to her goal and dive backwards on the turn to pluck the ball out of the air, in the process denying our new signing two goals in two weeks. Hamilton were also battling some injury concerns in the first half as they lost Shannon Trebes in the 35th minute in a strange incident where Trebes and Ellerslie’s Leigh Aitken collided in the Hamilton box – Aitken and Trebes were contesting a 50/50 ball to which Aitken got to first marginally and took a first time shot, which was blocked by Trebes and resulted in both players momentum causing a big collision. Somehow the Referee decided this was a foul by Aitken as both players received treatment, with Aitken able to play on but Trebes having copped a heavy head knock being subbed – hopefully she has since been checked and will recover! Wanderers did have one excellent chance late in the first half as they pinged a shot off Erin Simperingham’s left upright, with the rebound flashing across the goal and excellently cleared by Courtney Rowse who had kept her focus during that play.
14 If the first half was mostly Ellerslie then the second half was equally if not more Wanderers, with the home side forcing Simperingham into multiple saves – it did seem to feel like it might be one of those games where we could escape with a 1-0 win and try and find somewhere to buy our keeper a Zeffer or two on the way home to celebrate her performance. In the 85th min (just when the Ponies were dreaming of erasing the PTSD of playing in Hamilton) came the moment of the game for the Ponies players, coaches and supporters as the referee called a free kick against one of the Ellerslie players (not sure who, or for that matter what it was for) just outside the box and very central. Football is a game of interpretations, what is a foul, what isn’t a foul etc etc can be argued until the cows come home, but for this scribe Referee’s shouldn’t really get something as simple as how far back to put a wall from a free quick so wrong. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not accusing the official of bias, apparently in the first half (down the other end from me) we were given a similar free kick with equally generous distancing for the wall. For the record the distance I think the referee put the wall back for this free kick in the second half was in the realms of 14-15 yards – which is massive compared to the requirement of 10. What we will never know is if Michaela Foster would have scored anyway had the wall been at the correct distance, such is her expertise at this skill, but all we know is if you give someone this good, this much of a look at the goal it’s probably a goal every time and that’s what happened. As the Ponies tried to recover from conceding, Hamilton skipper Foster grabbed the winning goal, just 4 minutes after her first goal and with just 1 minute of regulation time left as she got on the end of a good cross from their right hand side and flicked the ball past Simperingham in goal and consigned Ellerslie to their first defeat of the season and firmly engraved the mental advantage over the Ponies when playing in Hamilton.
15 The reality is the Wanderers piled on the pressure in the second half and you would not expect that many chances to be saved in a game, however had Wanderers not been offered up such a golden opportunity there is every chance Ellerslie could have performed a smash and grab performance and locked in their first win of the season – I guess we will never know. Ponies Player of the Day went to goal-scorer and defensive superstar Kim Oosterbeek. Finally I just wanted to thank our large travelling supporters contingent, to come all the way to Hamilton in such large numbers on a long weekend when the beach was calling was impressive - thanks Red Army!
