THE AVE - ISSUE 3 04.07.20
ELLERSLIE AFC VS WAITEMATA FC
2 Welcome everyone to our third issue in 2020 of the almost award winning match program “The Ave” - our main guests this weekend are Waitemata FC who visit us for two NRFL Div 1 games, Reserves at 12:30pm on Saturday and the First Team at 3pm, so welcome to Dan and his team! After last weekends washout of community football we are looking forward to seeing all our teams back on the park this weekend - our early pacesetting in the senior side is AFF Men’s Div 4 Deceptively Slow with a 100% record from one game and a healthy +3 goal difference.
It would be remiss of me not to mention that our amazingly talented Women’s Premier team is playing Friday night this week at Becroft Park at 7pm - If you can get down and support the ladies as they aim to pick up another win and push for the top 3.
Cheers Tim Adams (Chairman)

8 by EAFC Media Ellerslie AFC went down 2-1 to a 75th min goal from Maksim Manko from a near post corner. In the first half the teams had traded goals as Metro FC opened the scoring when Honggyu Han swept home from 2 yards after a near post corner had been flicked on and Ellerslie drew level via the penalty spot with Dylan Horgan hitting his third goal of the season after Rowan Corbett had been fouled in the box. The game was played at a decent tempo once again, with the wet weather at Phyllis Street on Friday night didn’t seem to effect the players too much, but had a dramatic effect on the media team who were unable to get video, photo’s or even tweet consistently. Ellerslie started well again and had the first chances of the game but couldn’t find a way past a committed back 5 and a dominant Sean Dowling in goal – as we drew near to the 30 min mark Metro had launched a small number of direct attacks into our defensive third, mostly without too much drama, but in the 27th minute they earned what would be a decisive corner.
A near post delivery but at an awkward height was flicked towards goal and Kyryl reacted well and got down to parry the shot across goal, but unfortunately the Metro playmaker Han had an easy tap in to open the scoring. Ellerslie reacted well to being a goal down and cranked up the attacking play, which resulted in the human wrecking ball Rowan bursting into the box and
9 being poleaxed by a Metro defender just 6 minutes after conceding. Dylan who scored two penalties last week was confident and stepped up and slid the ball home from the spot, giving Sean Dowling no chance to save his effort. There was no further scoring in the first half, but there was an interesting subplot developing, centering around Metro FC’s number 8 and goal scorer Honggyu Han who had committed a number of fouls in the eyes of the referee, delivered a bit of backchat and also dabbled in some amateur freestyle diving – at the 45 min mark the referee had spoken to him several times, by our count there were 7 first half fouls and had yet to issue him with a yellow rectangle. In the second period Ellerslie again started well and put Metro under pressure with their energetic press, but couldn’t find reward for the energy spent, Metro for their part kept plugging along, looking like they could trouble us but most attacks petered out before too much danger could build. The rain really set in during the second half so even the brave souls out in the weather started to try and seek some cover and our media coverage dried up (it was the only thing that did) in the second half. A raft of subs from both teams between the 54th and 75th mins saw Ellerslie empty their bench and Metro use all but one sub searching for fresh legs and the one goal to decide the match. It was also in this period that yellow cards
10 started flowing for Metro, firstly a deserved yellow to Brad Rathbun who followed through on a through ball and collected Kyryl after he had picked up the ball – somewhat amusing that the Metro twitter saw that the other way.. Then Alex Cochran and Joseph Minto had their names taken for what the referee later said was a team accumulation of fouls (is that a thing?) when the irony was clear that at this point one player had committed somewhere between 7-9 fouls which were all called by the referee but further action declined. Maybe his teammates were taking the punishment for him? In the 75th minute Metro found the breakthrough they were looking for, a misplaced goalkick from Ellerslie fell to Honggyu Han in plenty of space and he played a nice ball forward for a Metro player, Ellerslie did well and stopped the attack but conceded a corner‌ The delivery was whipped into the near post and Maksim Manko, who had been running hard all game upfront by himself for little reward, rose highest and flicked the ball on at the near post and then celebrated as his flick ripped into the top corner of the goal and gave Metro a 2-1 lead. Ellerslie tried to turn the screws on the home team, but they stayed stoic and defended deep with their back 5 and with their dominant right side centreback Pablo CARABAJAL winning everything in the air they managed the final 15 mins of the game without too much drama. Sadly one of the remaining highlights of the game was in the 80th min when
11 Metro’s best player Hunggyu Hong finally got himself into the referee’s book (ironically not for persistent infringing) much to the bewilderment of the Ellerslie supporters in the crowd. It’s no secret that the Ellerslie faithful felt at this point with somewhere between 8-10 fouls called by the referee, plus a handful of dives that Metro’s playmaker should not have been on the pitch, but the referee as is his right felt comfortable with his decisions. Congrats to Metro FC who will be glad to be back in Div 1 and with a 100% record at home so far will want to make sure they stay well clear of any relegation drama, something Ellerslie need to be wary of already.
The promoted side seem to have built some very good team spirit, which was also noticeable on Saturday during the Reserves game as the Metro First Team tucked into a BBQ lunch as a squad while watching the Metro Reserves battle hard against a talented Ellerslie side who managed to grab a win after playing for 72 mins with 10 players.
Ellerslie host Waitemata FC at home next weekend in what shapes to be an early important game for the Ponies while Metro look to grab another win as they play a Takapuna side which looks to be struggling early doors this season.
