PHOTO/TWEET OF THE WEEK Issue 13 Focuses on the key clash between Ellerslie AFC and Hamilton Wanderers, pending results this weekend this game could be critical in deciding the final NwL spot.
4 WELCOME TO MT ALBERT PONSONBY This weekends feature match sees Mt Albert Ponsonby visit Michaels Ave, with both teams needing points for entirely different reasons, Ellerslie need points to kill off the chance of Bucklands Beach catching us while Mt Albert Ponsonby need points to stay in what is a tight promotion race in Div 1 this season. It’s hard not to feel a bit for the Anderson Park team who were superb in 2020 before Covid stopped the season and therefore any promotion/relegation. In the curtain-raiser to this game we see an interesting clash in the Reserves as Ellerslie who were upset last week by Waitemata up against a MAP team that gave the Ellerslie team a bit of a lesson in the first round - something Seb and his team will want to put right. As you can see to your right we have not been able to update the venues for our community teams this weekend, this is due to the weather causing all sorts of problems in the last 2 to 3 weeks with pitch availability at Michaels Ave, fingers crossed we can see a few more dry days in the next month and get some more football back at Michaels Ave - but I must say our members have been amazing in dealing with the disruption to training and games, thanks guys and girls! Lastly we just wanted to send our thoughts to Ngaruawahia who lost their president to illness in the last week or so, it’s never nice to lose a club member and particularly one who had done so much for the “Green Machine” - our thoughts are with his family! Cheers Tim Adams Chairman

MENS RESERVES AND FIRST TEAM VS WAITEMATA FC Last weekend our Men’s NRFL teams travelled to McLeod Park to take on Waitemata FC - here are a couple of snaps from that game. Top left: Avi has a time to have a laugh with a Waitemata FC player Top right: Lex ponders if he will have to play 90 after Ellerslie makes a 2nd sub in the first half. Bottom right: The flying mullet goes up against the Hammer in a tussle at a corner.

12 EARLY INJURIES PUT ELLERSLIE ON THE BACK FOOT FROM THE GET GO The Ponies travelled to McLeod Park to take on Waitemata FC on Saturday, in much more favourable conditions compared to the previous week. The lineup stayed much the same, with Veejian lining up in goal again. An unchanged backline saw skipper Poelman, Torrens, Ogawa-Bracey and Scott take the field, with a midfield made up of Davies-Campbell, Lai, Clark and Benefield instead of Grey. Morrow took his place up top with Corbett, pushing Fusha to the bench. The game started at a fast pace and a high intensity. Challenges were heavy from the first whistle but the lads were up for it. Ellerslie had the first real chance of the game off the back of some poor corners from the home side. Morrow did well to pick out a through ball to Lai, in which the midfielder found himself 1v1 with the keeper. He hit a low and hard shot, but the keeper was able to gather it up. It was Waitemata who found the net first, after their winger went for a long run down the left. Ogawa-Bracey managed to block his cross, but the deflection was gifted straight back to Waitemata and he made no mistake whipping in the second delivery. Veejian made a good attempt at batting it away from the approaching striker, but the rebound fell straight to Shane Tanner, who was able to tap it home. To add insult to injury, Ellerslie were forced to make a sub when Corbett went down after taking contact on his knee that he’s had previous problems with. The physio was quick to signal the end of his game and Edmondson brought Fusha on. The Ponies did well to create a number of attacking opportunities through some cleverly linked play between Morrow, Lai and Clark. While down the other end, the backline was doing their best to contain a surging Waitemata side. Poelman especially made some clutch last ditch efforts to deny the home team. Ellerslie almost made it to the half without anymore upset, until the 40th minute when Edmonson was forced to make another unplanned sub. Veejian had come out to challenge a 1v1 and as he went up to clear the ball, he collided with the oncoming forward, resulting in a bad knock to the head. The physio was called on immediately and after a few minutes of assessing him, he was deemed unfit to carry on. This forced Edmonson to replace him with Bolharyn. The lads managed to get to the half, giving Bolharyn some time to re-warm himself up. There was going to be a big shift needed from the Ponies, with only one possible interchange in hand. Waitemata edged the visitors out in the opening stages of the second spell, but the backline were doing well to hold their own. Waitemata
13 almost made it two when they hit the crossbar. The ball bounced straight down and Poelman did well again to clear it off the line. The relentless attack from Waitemata eventually saw them find their second goal. A well-placed cross into the box resulted in a header from close range at backpost. There was nothing Bolharyn could do from such close distance. However, only mere minutes later Ellerslie found themselves in with a chance as they got on the scoresheet. A ball to Lai down the right edge had him beating his first defender. He put in an early cross much to the disappointment of some of the supporters who wanted him to keep dribbling. They had to eat their words though, when the cross found Fusha, who calmly finished it past a diving keeper. Edmonson used his last sub to bring Kelly on for Davies-Campbell, hoping to inject some energy into the side and find that equaliser. It wasn’t meant to be though as the home side found their third not long later to take the wind out of the Ponies sails. Arnold Kochasira had the ball down the left and rocketed it in, in what was clearly a cross. But such is football (and an apparent curse for the Ponies as the women have conceded similarly a couple times) the ball skimmed the side post and somehow found the side netting on the opposite side. A disappointing way to concede in a game the Ponies had definitely clawed themselves back into. The last 10 minutes saw some entertaining end-to-end football as Ellerslie threw everything they had at Waitemata. They couldn’t find those elusive goals though, and the game finished at 3-1. It was an entertaining game to watch, with both teams going toe-to-toe the whole 90 minutes. There were plenty of heavy challenges, resulting in a number of yellow cards. However, what the media team saw and what the referee was dishing out appear to be quite different. Not in terms of the fouls themselves, but just who was on the receiving end of them, therefore this report doesn’t touch on any of them. Despite the loss, the performance over the weekend was completely different to what the boys supplied us with against East Coast Bays. If they can carry that intensity and drive into their next fixture against Mt AlbertPonsonby, we’ll have one entertaining fixture on our hands. The Ponies will host MAP at The Ave this coming Saturday for a 3pm kick off, so make sure you don’t miss out! Media Picks Man of the Match: A few goal line clearances and a good intensity from our skipper gives Seb Poelman our man of the match this week. He set the precedent with his work ethic and showed what it was going to take to see out the 90 minutes.
