THE AVE - ISSUE TWO 28.06.20
2 To borrow a popular phrase from English football - “It’s Coming Home!!!” That’s right Women’s Premier League Football is coming back to Michaels Ave, after a long time between drinks. So long that Premier League football has never seen Michaels Ave as a turf field, but as the once top quality grass field some of us with good memories can still remember. Without any further ado we welcome Glenfield Rovers to Michaels Ave, and in particular Andy Clay who was my first ever Reserves coach, right here at Ellerslie.
Glenfield are heavyweights in the Women’s Premier League so it will be another tough test for our team, and after a game full of lessons last week against Hamilton, it will be interesting to see how “The Ponies” bounce back. Good luck to all teams playing this weekend - it was great to see everyone get out and play last weekend, it was a long time coming and smiles on people’s faces as they finally got to kick a ball round a field was amazing to see. The Club would also like to welcome Spider Recruitment onboard as the Women’s NRFL Match Day sponsor - if you have any recruitment needs please get in touch with Spider and support our sponsors.
After your matches the clubrooms are open and waiting for you with cold beverages and hot chips, I hope you get to regal your teammates with stories of your valour during your match, a perfect fit with a cold beer. Cheers Tim Adams - Chairman

8 INSPIRED ELLERSLIE PIPPED AT THE POST BY WANDERERS by EAFC Media
A barely believable first 45 mins from Ellerslie in their first game back in the Premier League since 2003, 6132 days since our last game (Thanks Jeremy Ruane), had a decent crowd at Porritt stadium stunned, with the halftime whistle drowned out by rapturous applause from the grandstand. Hamilton with nothing to lose in the second half threw everything they had at the Ponies and grabbed a point right at the death – a game of real highs and lows for the Ellerslie side but a point gained is a point earned and both sides played 45 mins well worth a point. It was an early start to the day when the players gathered at Michaels Ave on a wet Sunday morning at 8am, as the coaching staff fetched our steeds for the day – a trio of vans from Baradene College who the club has a close working relationship with. After a quick stop at Bombay to pick up some key players we got back on the road to Hamilton with a lot of anticipation and excitement from both the team and the coaching and support staff. To break up the tension we had a short 9 question quiz all about Ellerslie AFC Women’s and the Premier League, it’s fair to say there were some mixed results, a 1/9 and a 6/9 were both beaten by a very suspicious 8/9 from Callum’s group.
Anyway as we arrived at Porritt Stadium, which is a new venue for a lot of the players in the team you could sense players starting to tune into the task at hand, well the Reserves were as the First Team play-
9 ers went about finding somewhere to eat and get some coffee. Armed with food and beverages the First Team took their seats in the grandstand to watch the reserves battle against a good home side, with Ellerslie taking an early lead thanks to a Lyric thunderbolt and after being pegged back, a goal in the second half via the spot to Hollie “Goal Machine” Leona, a penalty she also won. However Hamilton rallied late in the second half as they showed the ability to keep running on what was a heavy pitch to score two late goals to take the bikkies 4-2.
That led us onto the First Team game which as we alluded to earlier was a dream 45 min opening half, I don’t think Ryan and his team of coaches would have ever imagined such a great start – first blood was drawn in the 5th minute as Anita Trudgen finished off a close range chance as the ball dropped to her having kissed off the bottom of the crossbar from an Annabelle Pakieto shot and with no defenders or goalkeeper in the way Anita slammed the ball home to grab our 587th Women’s Premier League goal. Last years Golden Boot was the next to score as she pressed hard and ended up winning the ball in the Hamilton box and slipped an outside of the foot poke under the retreating Wanderers custodian and into the empty net – that made it 2-0 and only 8 mins gone!! There was a bit of a wait for goal number 3 (comparatively) as we shifted from 2-0 (most dangerous score in football apparently, I think maybe 3-0 should be in the discussion) to 3-0 as Britney picked up a
10 ball outside the box and sent a perfect left foot curling shot past Sophie Daly in goal for Wanderers – with 3 of our front 4 having scored and Annabelle being critical in buildup for two of the goals it was an attacking masterclass from the “newbies” to the Women’s Premier League. One more great chance came in the first half as Lily had a free kick on the edge of the box, her curling effort hit the post and was cleared away – some might say 4-0 would have been a mountain to tall for Hamilton to climb in the second half, but it wasn’t to be. Then halftime came and a large number of Ellerslie supporters who had traveled down to support the team gave the ladies a generous round of applause as they walked from the field and along the front of the grandstand to the changing rooms. Sadly the second half was practically all Wanderers, save from a few chances Ellerslie created on the counter – the heavy pitch and the quality of the Hamilton substitutes all played a part in making the second half very blue. All three goals from memory were from corners or resulting from corners, which probably means the team will be doing a bit of work on defending corners at training this week. A goal in the 67th minute to Chloe Henderson kicked off the comeback before Ellerslie had a decent chance to Anita Trudgen as she broke free of her marker on the left flank and drove into the box, but saw her shot saved by the Wanderers goalie.
11 Hamilton’s comeback was complete in injury time as centre-forward Chelsea Elliott used her height effectively at two corners to level the game which brought a strong verbal and physical reaction from the sizable crowd, the locals verbally expressed their delight at the comeback with whooping and celebrations, while the ponies supporters dropped their heads. There seemed to be some debate at full time about the amount of added time – however Hamilton owned the second half and will be ecstatic about getting a point from their position at halftime, while the ponies are feeling a little deflated after letting what looked like a solid lead go. Both teams will probably be happy that there wasn’t another 5 mins in each half, Ellerslie could have made it 4-0 in the First Team and possibly gained all three points, but conversely Hamilton could have scored their own 4th and possibly 4th in another 5 mins in the second half and come away winners. The Ellerslie team will be hurting following this result, but they showed for large parts of the game that they belong in this division and can really turn some heads so it’s back up on the horse for next week as we host Glenfield at Michaels Ave in Women’s Premier League for the first time since 2003. Also a special shoutout to our new home match day sponsor Spider Recruitment - great to have you on board and we ask people to support them, if you have recruitment needs hit them up.

16 The Rebels are back for another year in 2020 with a core of players that have been with the team for a number of years as well as some newer (and younger) players joining. There were over 30 people that trialled for the team showing the ongoing growth of womens football at the club. The major travesty of the offseason was losing team mascot and player of the day award Podrick the golden lobster in an unfortunate kit bag misplacement. Any leads let us know. It is literally a golden lobster. Its great being back playing football after lockdown, though the group did manage to maintain a fitness challenge series and do online tactics season it feels lush being back on the grass. COVID did take a few players and we are pleased to have made lock down recruitments. This year we are playing in a re-branded Championship division with a staggering 12 teams and a much anticipated trip to Waiheke part of a very competitive division. Sharon Elder has scored two goals in the first game for an early go at golden boot. This year we are changing formation to be more offensive so hopefully the goals will fly in! All the best to all Ellerslie teams! Up the Ponies.
