5 WELCOME TO WAITEMATA FC It’s our first home game for the Men’s team and they come into this match on the back of a great result against a very fancied Manurewa team, but we know from recent games that Waitemata are a tough bunch and they proved that again last season when they went the entire second half of the season unbeaten (I think) under new coach Hamish MacKay. So welcome to Hamish and his team and we hope you enjoy the game and we look forward to sharing a laugh after the game up in the clubrooms. Our Women’s team kicked off the season last week at home and they racked up an impressive 6-0 win so they have set the home standard high. As for the rest of the club, most teams start in May with only a few youth teams starting this weekend - good luck to Ian and the U16’s Girls and Hollie and the U14’s girls for their opening NRFL Youth games. We also would like to welcome a new sponsor, Grant Stephens is a local and is excited to sponsor the club as well as the Tamaki League U6 grade in 2022. If you are in need for some expert advice around mortgages then Grant is the man to talk to! Lastly please say hi to Marie who is our new bar manager, Marie came highly recommended by another sports club and she has been doing the last part of the cricket season and has done a great job, so we look forward to her looking after us in the clubrooms this season! Cheers Tim Adams CHAIRMAN - ELLERSLIE AFC

12 Going into the season opener, it’s probably safe to say the only people who were confident the boys were going to win were the lads themselves, the coaching staff and the three diehard supporters nicknamed #PoniesFaithful. Ellerslie welcomed the return of a number of players, a few of whom cemented themselves into the First Team in pre season. Jack Rathbone, Allan McBride and Tom Durkin joined Ellerslie veterans Denny Twigg and Josh Lai as the five reunite after last finding success in AFF U17 Sunday League with Ellerslie. Keegan Hansen, Chris Kessell and U20 player Shukrullah Rezaie were all named to make their starting debuts alongside last year’s skipper Seb Poelman, Jordan Bresler, Pat Grey and Ermal Fusha. The Ponies travelled away to Manurewa where they faced one of the league favourites after a bit of off season recruiting. The blue and gold home team brought the cheerleaders but it was the away side underdogs that brought the action as we opened the scoring first. The referee deemed Manurewa had committed a ‘pass-back’ offence and rewarded Ellerslie with an indirect free kick in the box. It was an unconventional but surprisingly pleasant combo of Poelman and Rezaie that allowed the young winger to open his scoring account for the Ponies. Despite a big goal line wall, he was able to fire it into the top of the net in what was a very nice finish. Manurewa, to their credit, were able to respond quickly with a goal of their own. A mistake at the back meant their own U20 starter Nabeel was able to go in on goal one on one leaving Hansen stranded. With the score locked at half time, both teams came out firing in the second spell. Coach Ben Fletcher decided Rezaie had done his job, so brought on Josh Lai as his replacement. It only took Poelman a few minutes to put the boys on top as Durkin sent in a deep
13 corner. The Ellerslie skipper wanted it the most and rose up above everyone to send his header into the back of the net. Like his passion and dedication to the team and Club, you could tell there was no stopping him as he went up to contest the header, and it was evident how much the goal meant as he and the team celebrated enthusiastically. The remainder of the game was both entertaining and nail-biting as Ellerslie held on to their tentative lead by the skin of their teeth. The lack of dedicated coach in the Manurewa side was one of their downfalls as they failed to make any on-the-fly changes that may have seen their gaping midfield adjust to our strong combo of Grey, Durkin and Kessell (then veteran Alex Clark). Despite the home side launching wave after wave of pressure, our Ponies held strong and were able to see out the 2-1 win, much to the delight of the travelling fans. An enjoyable watch with lots of positive signs as we host Waitemata next week.
Media Picks Man of the Match: With a goal and an assist, it’s hard to go past skipper and long-time Ellerslie man Seb Poelman. It’s almost poetic as it seemed to be a weekend for the one-club kids as his female counterpart had a strong start to the season too. With 40 seasons between them, it’s awesome to see players who have been with us since they were kids thriving at our highest levels. In the opening game for the 2022 season a very new look reserves started strong with a goal to the returning Hazem Alfayad, with the Ponies looking confident of getting a few more – however Manurewa stuck to their task and became stronger as the match wore on and grabbed an equaliser late in the game to leave both teams with 1 point in round 1.
