PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
ELLERSLIE VS BIRKENHEAD
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE I think “The Ave” has been running for close to 10 years now and in all that time the team we have probably featured the most is today’s opposition – Birkenhead United. Through all that time against our familiar foes there has been some great goals, some controversial moments and some great great football. We have a special article later on in todays program which details the top 10 moments of Ellerslie vs Birkenhead which we hope you enjoy. The main focus of this edition is of course the Chatham Cup – it’s a special competition to be a part of, particularly in the landscape of NZ Football when competitions seem to change more often than Warriors head coaches. The Chatham cup has survived many incarnations of national and regional leagues and has always captivated the attention of everyone involved – this year is no different. The one gripe I have is with the inclusion of the ASFA sides – I don’t have any problem with them being included but if they can’t provide decent facilities of at least NRFL standard (lockable changing rooms, or just changing rooms full stop) then they should be made to play away – having a cup game on the middle of a paddock at Eastdale Reserve doesn’t inspire much cup magic!
Of course while the Cup is the grassroots focus we also have something else quite magic happening in our own backyard with the FIFA U20 Men’s World Cup, which I read somewhere is the 3rd largest watched sporting event in the world behind only the main World Cup and the Summer Olympics. So this is a massive chance for Football in this country to take a leap forward – We can’t mention the U20’s World Cup without talking about Andre de Jong who came through every grade at Ellerslie AFC and played for our Men’s First Team before transferring to ECB and Wanderers to push for inclusion in the Kiwi team – well he has made it and we are proud to say he is an Ellerslie lad. Seeing if NZ can nab that elusive first win at U20 level will be our main focus but we also have stakes in another team, Austria – who briefly trained at Michaels Ave upon their arrival – the team from Europe were inundated by young Ellerslie AFC FRONT COVER: Warrick gives Will a piggy back ride after scoring against Birko

WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE players for autographs on whiteboards, boots, shorts, shirts and balls – they were extremely accommodating and won over a fair portion of the club, so much so they are now our official 2nd team in the Cup! Zum Österreich!! Back to today’s main game and we wish Paul and his team all the best – a quality game of football with no injuries and no red cards would be ideal for both Birkenhead and Ellerslie – but that just wouldn’t be the way of these games!! Please join us after the final whistle for a cold drink and some hot food in the clubrooms! Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman

ASB CHATHAM CUP
League clashes head second round Two-time defending competition champions Cashmere Technical – who squeaked into the second round via a dramatic extra time win over Western AFC on Saturday – have been drawn at home against Mainland Premier League side Halswell United as their tilt at a rare competition three-peat goes on.
Further south in Dunedin; Football South Premier League leaders Caversham travel to bottom side Otago University while fifth-placed Rosyln Wakari host third-placed Dunedin Technical – ASB Chatham Cup champions in 1999. In the Central Region, Lower Hutt City – first round winners over derby rivals Upper Hutt – face Petone FC while Napier City Rovers, ASB Chatham Cup semi-finalists in 2014, host fellow Central League side Stop Out. In the Northern Region, NRFL leaders Glenfield Rovers face a trip to fivetime ASB Chatham Cup winners Central United – competition runners-up in 2014 – while the clash of Onehunga Sports and Bay Olympic as well as Eastern Suburbs and Western Springs AFC are the other all-Premier League ties. Elsewhere, NRFL Division 1 leaders North Shore United will take aim at Premier League side Hamilton Wanderers while Sunday League side FC Old Boys get a chance to knock off former champions East Coast Bays AFC. Ngongotaha AFC, giant killers in recent years in the competition, will get another chance to knock out a big name when they travel to NRFL Premier League side Three Kings United. All second round fixtures will be played on May 31 or June 1. 8

ASB CHATHAM CUP CHATHAM CUP NORTHERN REGION
There are 16 Northern Region Chatham Cup games on this weekend - here we preview and predict all of them. Mangere vs Onehunga Mangere 31st May @ Centre Park 1 - 2pm The Mountain men make the short trip across the motorway to Centre Park for this Round 2 Cup clash Mangere will want to bounce back from last weeks league loss and they will want to make sure they check their teamsheet as regulations have robbed them of apperances in later rounds in recent seasons. OM have a new coach in Nick Russo and he will want a good start in his coaching role in this derby game. PREDICTION: OM to shock their neighbours in extra time! Waitemata City AFC v Hibiscus Coast AFC 1st June @ McLeod Road 1 - 2pm The leading side in the AFF/NFF conference face up against one of the promotion contenders in NRFL Div 1 in the shape of Hibiscus Coast. Both sides have won a game to get to this point with Waitemata dispatching fellow Conference side Ranui Swanson 5 to 1 while Coast had a closer game when they won by 1 goal against WaiBOP side Otumoetai 3-2. PREDICTION: Waitemata will bat above their weight but Coast by 1 for me Onehunga Sports v Bay Olympic 31st May @ Waikaraka Park 1 - 2pm An all NRFL Premier Clash - Sports with the home advantage in the battle of the bottle green clubs. These are the opening games for these two sides so only league form can give us any clues, and that points to a win for the West Auckland side with a +4 point difference over the Sports side. PREDICITION: Bay riding a bit of a crest of luck, Sports the better side by 2 North Shore Utd AFC v Hamilton Wanderers FC 1st June @ Allen Hill - 2pm 1st in Div 1 vs 2nd in Premier League - you would be brave to put your pennies against this being a NRFL Premier League game next season - We have seen signs of a Shore wobble in recent weeks with a shaky 1-0 win over Metro in the cup and then a loss against close neighbours FHM. Wanderers themselves are in a bit of a wobble and lost to Bays heavily in a shortened game last time out. PREDICTION: Wanderers should be good enough but it will be tight - 2-1 FC Old Boys v East Coast Bays AFC 31st May @ Walker Park 1 - 2pm In a classic minnows vs giants game we see one of two remaining ASFA sides in the cup take on Premier side East Coast Bays, the venue is more famously known for where a young Stacey Jones came to fame with his club side City Pt Chev but on this day it will be football that is the centre piece. Can ECB remain focused and book a spot in the next round? PREDICTION: ECB just too strong - could be 5 or 6 University of Auckland v Tauranga City Utd AFC 31st May @ Cox Bay - 2pm Tauranga make the trip North to meet the other remaining ASFA side - and they play at the very open and exposed Cox Bay Reserve, a lack of facilities will be a bit of a shock for the WaiBOP based side but their quality should be enough to see them through. PREDICITION: The Links Ave side will win by 3 Oratia Utd v Mt Albert-Ponsonby AFC 31st May @ Parrs Park - 2pm MAP have hit an upsurge of form in recent weeks but will be upset at losing to Narra in the league after beating them in the cup - Oratia are halfway through the season with a new coach and there are some promising signs so far. PREDICTION: Could be tight - MAP on pens?
10
ASB CHATHAM CUP Waiuku AFC v Waitakere City FC 1st June @ Massey Park - 2pm The battle of the W sides - Waitak struggling at the bottom of Premier League and Waiuku making a good fist of their first year in Div 1 - you would think it’s Waitak’s game but will the home side’s pitch be a big advantage to the Franklin district club? PREDICTION: I’m picking Waiuku for the upset here, just to phsyical Albany Utd v Forrest Hill Milford Utd AFC 1st June @ Rosedale Park - 2pm A local derby for FHM a week after handing neighbours Shore a hiding - this should be an easier assignment with Albany struggling in the lower tiers of Div 2 - a nice pitch at Rosedale should encourage some decent football. PREDICITON: FHM too good and will win comfortably Eastern Suburbs AFC v Western Springs AFC 1st June @ Madills Farm - 2pm East meets West in this all NRFL Premier League clash - it will be a tight game but I think the more experienced Suburbs team will fancy themselves while Springs will be looking to talisman Sam Burfoot to provide their go forward. PREDICTION: I think it will go to extra time but Suburbs will nick it. Manukau City AFC v Claudelands Rovers 31st May @ Walter Massey Park - 2pm A rare clash between fellow NRFL Div 2 sides, with Manukau sitting very high in the league and Rovers going along nicely in midtable this may be an interesting contest. Both clubs have beaten AFF/NFF Conference sides to get to this point. PREDICTION: Manukau too strong on home soil Melville Utd v South Auckland Rangers AFC 1st June @ Gower Park - 2pm The south Hamilton side will be keen for their first win this season and will lineup against Conference side SAR’s confident that the gap in quality will be too much for the South Auckland side. Rangers however while languishing 2nd to last in Conference have proved their giant killing ability by putting NRFL2 side Papatoetoe out last round. PREDICTION: Melville win in extra time - Jason Mann with a pen save at the end of regulation Three Kings Utd v Ngongotaha AFC 1st June @ Keith Hay Park - 2pm A rough week for TKU with points being stripped off them left right and centre for playing namesake Tom Konusi whilst still registered to ACFC - they will want to make up for all that disappointment by putting out a confident and assured performance against Ngongie who as we know are a good battling side and always punch above their weight. PREDICTION: hard to see anything other than a Three Kings win.
Takapuna AFC v Papakura City FC 31st May @ Taharoto Reserve - 2pm Taka have struggled in recent weeks and look like they might be struggling to avoid the drop at the halfway point in the league, they have a good squad though so expect a fightback - Kura on the other hand a pretty red hot at the moment and will fancy a few more rounds in the cup. PREDICTION: Going for an upset here, Kura too good at the moment Central Utd FC v Glenfield Rovers 31st May @ Kiwitea Street - 2pm Jose’s side met Rovers last year in the cup as well I seem to recall and bumped them out then and will want to do the same in this clash - Rovers are gunning for cup glory I’m told from an inside source and they will want to achieve this kind of glory before the cash dries up at McFetridge. Probably the game of the round to be fair. PREDICTION: Glenfield will come out on top, possibly via extra time.

NRFL MATCH REPORTS It was a weekend of extremes – both on the field with results and above the field with wild weather, it was not a weekend for those weak on resolve or character – or with heart conditions. I thought rather than the traditional match reports I would frame this weekend’s action into the classic, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. First let’s focus on the good! GOOD – A win for both the First Team and Reserves, remarkably different games but both resulted in 3 more points being slapped onto our total on the standings. First up with the reserves, they were kicked into gear with a great finish from skip Monju who fired a bullet into the back post – howls of offside came from the away side, but they were in vain as the referee agreed with our AR and the goal stood. I wasn’t able to see the 2nd and 3rd goals and the teamcard didn’t have time details so I can’t even pretend that I did. I know Monju bagged a 2nd to take him equal top on Reserves golden boot with Isaac and Zach and according to the teamcard Conrad bagged one as well, taking his tally to 2 in three games which is a good result for the deep lying midfielder. In the First Team game things were never as comfortable as the curtain raiser – a Mangere team packed with pace and ability, and playing a much more structured style than we have seen from a Mangere side meant it was a tricky fixture. Mangere fielded at least four ASB Premiership players in Mario Bilen (Auckland City), Sanni Issa (Auckland City), Dewook Kim (Auckland City) and Ernesto Lopez (WaiBop United), the first two playing major roles in Auckland City’s 3rd place Club World Cup finish. Mangere probably just dominated possession throughout the game but were reluctant to put their pace away, instead trying to go around our very organised back four, who combined with a hardworking midfield in front of them were doing a good job blocking the channels – this meant Mangere were left a little space wide and that’s where they focused their assaults on both our fullbacks. It meant a tough night for Mike and Freddie and while they were not without some mistakes there was plenty of good patient defending which kept the away side wide and minimised the danger. In terms of our own possession we looked to counter quickly against Mangere’s high line and this worked perfectly midway through the first half as Alex who was swapping regularly with Andy on the left wing found himself through 1 on 1 with the Mangere keeper and made no mistake sliding the ball under the custodian to open the scoring. Mangere hit back reasonably quickly via an Ernesto Lopez tap in at the back post. I don’t recall the 2nd Mangere goal but that was popped in before halftime which meant we headed back into the sheds with a 1 goal deficit but plenty to still play for. We hit the second half running as Mike Ritchie who had earlier had a screamer tipped over by the keeper made sure we didn’t spend much of the 2nd half behind as he headed home at the near post from a Ryan O’Sullivan free kick to level us up. As the second half developed we look more and more dominant but couldn’t quite find the back of the net – it wasn’t until Mangere took a shock lead via a debatable goal from a corner that we sprung into life. We chased and chased and in the 87th min we found reward as Alex pressured the keeper into botching his clearance – it fell right at the feet of Andrew Wallace who was on the back of a bit of a goal drought – but he put all that to one side and floated the ball into the back of the unguarded net from about 35 yards. The keeper looked like he wanted to dig a hole – until one of the Michaels Ave faithful reminded him that he
14
NRFL MATCH REPORTS couldn’t on the turf field. We were on a high having come back twice and from the Mangere kick off we chased and won the ball immediately and put more pressure on the away side who looked like they didn’t want to be there. From a corner we won from this pressure Andrew Wallace delivered a perfect cross to the edge of the 6 yard box where somehow (with his head or foot, I couldn’t see) sub Callum Waters guided the ball into the top corner of the net to take the lead. That wasn’t us done as Tim Richardson had his goal disallowed when he used his shoulder to guide the ball home from a corner, what would have been his 5th goal in 5 games was ruled be to handball – another controversial call but at the end of the day one that didn’t effect the result as we took the points thanks to some real guts in the last 10 mins and another wonder save by Conor Tracey to deny Mangere any points late in the game. BAD – unfortunately not everyone received the rub of the green on the weekend as Ben Pauley and his NRFL Div 2 Reserves side lost their second game on the trot and in extreme fashion being on the wrong end of a 7-1 scoreline – Kieran Bisacre-Peters scoring our goal against his old club. UGLY – this was never going to be anything other than the weather to be fair, it was horrible – aided by the fact that there is nowhere to hide from it at Michaels Ave – an all-round miserable even weather wise. There was another event which almost took this title – the complete and total no-show from Mangere at the aftermatch – not even a single coach, player or official, heck even the referee’s turned up! That on top of the fact they didn’t clean up after themselves in the changing rooms was a sour taste in our mouths – this is after all a complete lack of respect for their hosts but also themselves at the end of the day – to coin a Ben Pauley phrase – do better Mangere!
Cup football is up this week – with the First Team taking on Birkenhead on Monday at 3pm at Michaels Ave – this game is preceded by the NRFL Div 1 Reserves taking on NRFL Premier Reserves side Onehunga Sports in the NRFL Knockout Cup, this game kicks off at 12:30pm – which is also the same kick off time for our NRFL Div 2 Reserves side as they ironically take on Mangere at Centre Park on the same day (better clean up those changing rooms afterwards guys!).

EDITORIAL TOP 5 ELLERSLIE vs BIRKENHEAD MOMENTS That penalty: at Shepherds Park – Warrick Hart who loved scoring against Birkenhead powers into the Birko box and is clipped by the keeper but keeps his feet and has a shot which hits the side netting – only for the Referee to call it back for the pen much to the annoyance of the home fans. Warrick Hart enjoying his last NRFL game at Michaels Ave after retiring with 100 First Team games and 75 goals - a true club man
Hand of God: Birko are up 2-0 at Shepherds Park and we have a shot saved on the line from a corner – the Ellerslie players roar at the referee about the use of a hand and the referee reacts and issues a straight red to Jack Salter for a handball on the goal line and awards the pen – only for Ellerslie to miss and lose the game
18
EDITORIAL
The Shootout: Chatham Cup match – it ends 3-3 after extra time and we enter a penalty shootout, two of our regular penalty takers in Nathan Palmer and Scott Wallace miss pens as we bounce out of the cup on home soil and Birko progress to the next round.
The Shootout II: Reserves Knockout Cup final – Michaels Ave on a wet Wednesday night, after what I would say is the best quality reserves game I have ever seen we entered a penalty shootout to decide the best reserves side in the NRFL – the home side keeps it’s nerve this time to take home the cup! 19
EDITORIAL Rugby Tackle: Late in the game a Birko player breaks free of the Ellerslie backline in a game at Michaels Ave – Callum Brown throws himself at the Birkenhead player like a halfback tackling a raging back rower and pulls the player to the ground, the referee awards a free kick and a yellow card much to everyone’s amusement.

MICHAELS AVE RESERVE PROGRESS Progress continues on the lower fields as drainage is now being started on Fields 2 and 3 having been completed on field 4 already. The cricket block looks like it’s slowly being formed with three grass pitches and 1 artificial pitch making up the block. However as we at Ellerslie AFC know, no matter how much drainage they put in all it takes is a little bit of rain and it turns into lake Michaels Ave - as per the picture below
