PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Right it’s the final program of the season – there is lot’s of good stuff in this bumper issue which includes a preview of this weekends’ final NRFL game against Forrest Hill Milford and the reserves NRFL Cup Semi-Final against Three Kings on Tuesday night, and of course much much more. So welcome everyone to “The Ave” – in particular welcome to David Mulligan and his team, congrats on winning the league and your successive promotions – and we wish you all the best of luck in the Premier League next year. It’s an important weekend for the NRFL Div 1 Reserves as a win would give us the title, so Fred and Dave and the lads will be up for this encounter, however Forrest Hill Milford could still win the title if they beat us (their goal difference is better) and Takapuna lose their catchup game (hasn’t been scheduled yet) against MAP. Further complicating factors is Shore who have 2 games in the pocket, if they lose either of these then they can finish only as high as 2 nd with results going their way. It’s almost time for the calculators!
We have several teams who have won their leagues already this season – so let’s congratulate Div 5 Shotaholics and Over 40’s Conference for their league wins, great stuff guys! Winning isn’t the only thing to be thankful for – we have a great group of volunteers and team managers to complement our playing members. So if you are one of these tireless people who help the club tick day in and day out, behind the bar/kitchen, organising fixtures or rounding up your team for a game THANK YOU! We could not be the club we are without you! For all the teams who are still playing good luck – and enjoy what will hopefully be some better weather in September! Lastly we hope to see all senior club members at the clubs prizegiving on the 26 th September – 6pm kickoff – tickets available soon from the bar and your team managers. Cheers Tim Adams Chairman - Senior Division
FRONT COVER: David Mulligan under pressure from Ryan O’Sullivan BACK COVER: Ouch - #trich clearly doesn’t like that tackle.

MENS NORTHERN KNOCKOUT CUP The Northern Knockout Cup is the premier cup competition for the Auckland region of AFF – teams from as high as the AFF Conference League and as low as AFF Div 10 can enter. The winner of this competition plays against the winner of the Counties Manukau Cup for the Tom McNabb Trophy. In 2015 we had 12 teams enter the first round – with just over half progressing (7) to the next round. We had one Ellerslie vs Ellerslie clash in the 1st round as Deceptively Slow took out Simpson in a close game. Knockout Cup draws are always a bit of a lottery but it didn’t seem to matter who was put infront of them Div 5 Hicks knocked them off. They knocked out a Conference Reserves team, a Championship team a Div 1 team and an Ellerslie Div 4 team on their way to the semi-finals. Jonny Hicks and his team were flying high and only a lack of players hurt them in the end as they fell against Uni-Mt Wellington Men’s Conference the step before the semi-finals (in an elimination round which was needed because somehow AFF ended up with 5 teams at the semi’s stage!!) Another team to do well was Div 2 Deceptively Slow who fell to finalists Uni-Mt Wellington Conference (who play just one level below NRFL) – Congrats to both sides for their fine efforts! WOMENS AFF KNOCKOUT CUP This competition covers all women’s teams in the Auckland and Counties Manukau areas of AFF – NRFL teams are not allowed to enter which means the Women’s Conference league is the highest level and it covers all the way down to Women’s Div 5. This season we entered all three of our women’s teams into the 1st round with our Div 1 Rebels being the most successful as they made it all the way to the Semi-Finals where they just couldn’t topple the top Conference side in Metro FC. All in all 33 teams entered the competition and unfortunately after that first round we were only left with the one team – Our Conference side who would have been one of the favourites drew fellow Conference team Onehunga Sports and to be fair struggled to put a team out so dipped out 3-0. The Rebels however had a great run – the beat the aforementioned Onehunga Sports team in the 2nd round before nailing 7 past Tuakau Div 5. They were then drawn to play Central Utd in the elimination final and they strolled home with that game 3-0. Sadly the final wasn’t to be as Metro’s Conference team proved too strong and they will face off against their own reserves team in the Women’s Knockout Final in what is a strange twist of fate. Still a great experience for all the women’s teams and we hope next year is our year!

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW Waiuku vs Ngaruawahia Massey Park @ 2:45pm Bring your calculators to this game as the equations are not that simple - well for Narra they are, they need the win if they are to have any chance of missing the drop. Waiuku on the other hand are not quite as desperate but they can do themselves a world of good condemming the Green Machine to the drop. Ellerslie vs Forrest Hill Milford Michaels Ave @ 3pm Neither team can get any higher with a win here, infact FHM will stay in top spot and a place in 2016's premier league no matter what the result in todays final game for both sides. Ellerslie will want the mental edge of finishing in 3rd place for next season, but so will Coast so the battle is real. North Shore vs Tauranga City Allen Hill @ 2:45pm (Sunday) Another game you might need an electronic counting device in - effectively the only teams left in the promotion race but Tauranga have 3 more games (and 9 more possible points) after this match so it's not all over rover if the Shore side win here as long as they don't win their other game left (against Mangere). Mangere Utd vs Hibiscus Coast Centre Park @ 2:45pm (Sunday) The final game of this catch up round see's cup semi-finalists Mangere hosting one time promotion hopefulls Hibiscus Coast - just like a few teams neither team can really make much of a movement on the table so this might be about pride (and some personal accolades (4 players from these teams make up the Golden Boot top 7) so we might see a high scoring affair. NRFL MATCH REPORT In all honesty without trying to be too mean about it our result again Ngaruawahia was what we expected it to be – a win. It’s dangerous to read too much into the win based on how poor the opposition were, but there positive signs we can challenge Forrest Hill Milford this coming weekend.
I guess our form is a strong indicator that we have turned a corner – with our last three games resulting in 15 goals lodged into the positive with only 4 goals being conceded in return. Particularly impressive is that defensive record with such a young backline and against some talented strikers. It would have been nice to net a clean sheet or two over this period but with our attack clicking it’s a bit greedy to start demanding defensive perfection – however this is a goal and there is one more game to achieve our 5th clean sheet of the season. Shut outs are something the reserves are managing on a regular basis with their last four games being clean sheets, meaning they have 8 clean sheets this season from 21 games (not a bad effort). Their last four games has also seen them pillage 14 goals en-route to the verge of back to back div 1 titles. FHM will of course provide some very stern opposition and a win will be massively important to Fred and Dave and his team heading into another important game on Tuesday at 7pm at Michaels Ave as we take on Three Kings in the semi-finals of the Reserves Knockout Plate.
The winner of that knockout game plays FHM in the final – so this weekend is a bit of a dress rehearsal for that as well should we get there. Our thirds in their last ever season in NRFL broke their poor sequence with a 2-1 win over title contenders Fencibles – a result that basically ended the Riverhills side chance of the Div 2 Reserves title. As we head into our final weeks of NRFL action for 2015 I would just like to say it has been an honour working with the class of 2k15, seeing players develop and some new ones emerge is the driving force 22
NRFL MATCH REPORT behind my motivation to be here week in and week out. Also I encourage you all to join me in my new found appreciation for Referee’s – I am now in week 6 of my self imposed ban on “encouraging” referee’s from the sideline – and I have found I am really enjoying the football – more than ever before! I hope you are too as above all else you should enjoy your football first and foremost!

NRFL KNOCKOUT CUP The NRFL Reserves Knockout competition is for all NRFL Reserves teams from all three divisions. There are four tiers to the NRFL Knockout, the Cup, the Plate, the Bowl and the Shield. Typically to save time AFF grade teams into two pots to start off with, a Cup group and a Bowl Group. This grading is made by taking all of the premier reserves teams and the top half at the time in Div 1 and making them the cup group – the bottom half of the Div 1 Reserves and the Div 2 Reserves make up the Bowl Group. In this first round all the winners go on to play in the Cup/Bowl knockout while the losers drop into the Plate/Shield.
Between our two Reserves teams since the NRFL Reserves Knockout has been around (2012 I think) we have managed 1 Plate, 1 Bowl and 1 Cup victory, with our most proud moment being a penalty shootout win over Birkenhead in 2013. Full Honours List: 2012 – Ellerslie vs Three Kings (Knockout Plate) – Ellerslie win via pen’s 2013 – Ellerslie vs Birkenhead (Knockout Cup ) – Ellerslie win via pen’s 2014 – Ellerslie (Thirds) vs Forrest Hill Milford (Knockout Bowl) – Ellerslie win This season our Thirds endured a bumpy road as they lost in their first round to Mangere Utd but the on-field result was overturned due to Mangere playing an ineligible player – so the Thirds jumped into the Bowl group where they drew Papakura. A close game but the Ellerslie side went down 3-2 and our defence of the title was over. The Reserves also lost their first game in the Knockout – they went down 2-1 to a very good Onehunga Sports team who looked very sharp. A great goal by Monju gave us the lead but we let two late goals slip to lose the game and end up in the Plate Round. Our next opponent was Bay Olympic, who were not much of a challenge as we swept them away 5-0; in a game that could have been much more convincing than it already was.
So that brings us to this semi-final where Three Kings are the obstacle for us – ironically FHM wait for the winner of this game in the final on the 13th September at McLennan Park – so hopefully we can meet them there. Good luck to Fred, Dave and his lads keeping our streak alive!

ASB CHATHAM CUP
Napier City Rovers will fight for a fifth ASB Chatham Cup title after Sunday’s dramatic 4-3 penalty shoot out victory over Birkenhead United at a sodden Shepherds Park in Auckland. Earlier, Hoyle had given the Central League champions a 1-0 advantage in the 11th minute, slotting home under Robinson when through on goal.
Birkenhead substitute Ethan Galbraith scored within a few minutes of entering the game in the second half, a well-taken header from James Lawson’s cross pulling the hosts level. Chances came and went at both ends to secure a final berth before extra time – Napier’s Josh Stevenson and Angus Kilkolly twice drawing excellent saves from Robinson – but once the game entered the additional frame, defences at both ends tightened and scoring chances were few and far between. In the shootout, Birkenhead’s Adam Dickinson had the first penalty saved by Ruben Parker before Napier’s Saul Halpin missed the visitors’ second spot kick to leave it at 1-1. From there each side converted with Birkenhead’s Daniel Morgan and Christian Gray netting and Napier’s Ryan Tinsley and Fergus Neil also on target for 3-3. Harrison Bolton-Roberts then had Birkenhead’s fifth penalty saved by Baxter and Hoyle confidently stepped forwards to ice the victory – albeit in off Robinson’s out-stretched palm at full length. Birkenhead United AFC 1-1 Napier City Rovers (half: 0-1) (full: 1-1) BIR: Ethan Galbraith 57’ NCR: Stephen Hoyle 11’ Napier City win 4-3 on penalties

ASB CHATHAM CUP
Auckland’s Eastern Suburbs AFC will get a chance at a sixth ASB Chatham Cup title after claiming a comprehensive 4-0 semi-final victory over Mangere United at Madills Farm on Saturday. The recently-crowned champions of the Northern Regional Premier League brushed aside the challenge of their Division 1 opponents, sweeping to a 3-0 halftime lead through Rudi Mozr, Michael Bryant and Brandon Barnes before adding a further Bryant goal in the second period. The hosts – last champions of New Zealand Football’s showpiece winter competition in 1969 – were rarely threatened outside of a 10-minute spell early in the second half which saw Mangere cause a few problems without finding a foothold on the scoreboard. After both sides created scoring chances in the early going it was Mozr’s seventh minute piece of invention which set the hosts on their way – the Suburbs’ player volleying in from a ridiculously wide angle; nearer the touchline than the goal frame, to the joy of the big home crowd. From there it was all Suburbs as McPherson’s team went 2-0 up just after the 20 minute mark, Bryant’s header from close range finding the back of the net. Six minutes later Barnes lashed in a powerful drive from inside the area which Mangere United ‘keeper Igor Gjorgievski could only touch into his own net at full stretch. Facing a 3-0 deficit, Mangere picked up the pace in the opening period of the second stanza but despite spending more time in possession in the Suburbs’ half, regular chances were still hard to come by and when Bryant stabbed home in the aftermath of a corner on the hour, there was no way back for the south Aucklanders. Eastern Suburbs AFC 4-0 Mangere United (half: 3-0) EAS: Rudi Mozr 7’, Michael Bryant 22’, 60’, Brandon Barnes 28’ MAN: –
