PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE What a week – there is so much to talk about, but first let’s welcome todays visitors for the FIRST ever time to Michaels Ave! Jim, Geoff and your team welcome and we wish you all the best in this your debut season. Franklin is our first topic – a new franchise created to give the youth in Pukekohe and Waiuku an NRFL pathway to follow, I personally think it’s a great idea and I really hope they can keep their spot in the NRFL Div 1 league and keep their dream alive. I know there has been some teething problems but anything worth doing is worth doing right, and there will be speed bumps, but keep on track and your time will come In other NRFL news Hibiscus Coast are the new Three Kings as the player eligibility scandal resurfaced this week – Coast are believed to have played a player last registered to them in 2014 in their wins over Waitakere and Franklin. So Waitakere pick up 3 points while Coast lose 6 points – Franklin on the other hand don’t pick up points as they also played a guy who had a hangover suspension from last season – so that game is null and void. Confused? Well we are here to help.
Table before #eligibilitygate2
Table after #eligibilitygate2
So as you can see – very little change down the bottom of the table but the loss of 6 points sends Hibiscus from the top all the way down to 6th and hands Waitakere a handy 4 point buffer at the top.
Moving on to Cup Football – not only is there the Chatham Cup but there is also the NRFL Reserves Knockout Cup, the NZ Women’s Cup, the AFF Woman’s Cup and the Northern Knockout Cup! So much cup football coming in early June – check out page 8 for more information on who the Ellerslie teams have drawn in these cups! Lastly I would like to welcome a couple of new sponsors to the club this week – joining our NRFL Player sponsor group is Advanti Racing who are sponsoring Ryan O’Sullivan and also Advance who are popping their name on the back of Seb Poelman – you can check out more about both of these company’s in our NRFL Sponsor Directory on pages 1012. Thanks for your time and see you up in the clubrooms after your game for a cold drink and some hot food! Cheers Tim Adams

Some interesting match ups - particularly for the historians among us with our Women’s First Team matching up against our old enemies Lynn Avon. These two teams contested three straight “Uncle Toby Cup” finals in the early 2000’s, Lynn Avon won 2 and Ellerslie pinched 1 with help from one Maia Jackman - who these days lines up for Lynn Avon! In the Chatham Cup our Men’s team drew the same opposition they play in the league only two days prior to this cup clash - so that will be interesting to see how that plays out. In the AFF Women’s Knockout cup all our teams have drawn opposition from leagues below so there is a decent chance we could get all 3 teams into the next round! And finally in the Northern Knockout Cup we have a lot of Eastern Suburbs and Western Springs games - Spare a thought for our div 6 Barons side who have picked up a tough game against a Div 1 side, Elks also face a tough challenge as they step up from Div 3 action to play an AFF Championship team. It can be done as Hicks showed last year as they beat a Conference and a Conference reserves side on their way deep into the competition.

NZ WOMEN’S KNOCKOUT CUP - Story by NZ Football (full article here) There is an intriguing blend of matches in Round 2 of the Women’s Knockout Cup with a top-of-the-table Mainland clash, a repeat of several previous finals and the guaranteed progression of a lower league team all featuring. The official draw for the second round was conducted today at the New Zealand Football headquarters in Auckland under the supervision of Terry Hobin, Competitions Manager at the Northern Football Federation, and there was little doubt about the standout fixture.
Cashmere Technical and 2013 cup winners Coastal Spirit are currently tied at the summit of the Mainland Premier League but Cashmere will go in as slight favourites after triumphing 3-0 in the league meeting between these sides just over a month ago. In the north, Ellerslie’s hosting of Lynn-Avon United will be noteworthy for footballing train spotters as it brings together the clubs that contested three consecutive finals from 2001 to 2003. Lynn-Avon won two of those finals so AFF/NFF Conference side Ellerslie will be out for revenge and may fancy their chances as the west Aucklanders are currently languishing at the foot of the NRFL Premier League without a point to their name. Remarkably, a survivor from that 2001 final is likely to take the field as Football Ferns icon Maia Jackman, who is about to celebrate her 41st birthday, has answered an SOS call from Lynn-Avon this season. The former international skipper will be wearing a different kit this time though as she played for Ellerslie in those earlier finals.
Also crossing paths with a former club will be fellow ex-Football Fern Marlies James (née Oostdam), who now plays for AFF/NFF Conference leaders Papakura City and will find herself in familiar surroundings at third-placed NRFL Premier League side Eastern Suburbs. Anything other than a Suburbs win would be considered an upset there and it will be a similar situation up at Stanmore Bay, where Conference outfit Hibiscus Coast will host Glenfield Rovers, who have won the Women’s Knockout Cup in both of the past two seasons. While it remains to be seen whether an unfancied side can make it through in either of those fixtures, there is guaranteed to be a lower league team in the hat for the next round after Rotorua United and Central United were drawn to meet each other. AFF/NFF Championship leaders Central will take some beating as they are yet to drop a point in the league this season and have conceded just two goals in their six matches so far. But the hosts are also performing well in the WaiBOP Premier League and have tasted defeat only once so it will be difficult to pick a winner. The second round of the Women’s Knockout Cup will be played over the long weekend of June 4-6 with clubs confirming the details for these fixtures with their federations and New Zealand Football. Women’s Knockout Cup Round 2 Draw (to be staged June 4-6) Northern: Hibiscus Coast vs Glenfield Rovers Eastern Suburbs vs Papakura City Forrest Hill-Milford United vs Papatoetoe Western Springs vs Norwest United Claudelands Rovers vs Three Kings United Rotorua United vs Central United Metro vs Hamilton Wanderers Ellerslie vs Lynn-Avon United

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW It’s another week for the preview in the Lotto NRFL Div 1 - who can take advantage of the most recent eligibility scandal? What upsets are we going to see this week? Hibiscus Coast vs Manurewa Stanmore Bay Park @3pm It's hard to talk about Coast without touching on their loss of 6 points this week for fielding a player last registered for their club in 2014 - how will the inform NFF side react to this setback? They seem to have a strong resolve this year so expect a strong reaction - Manurewa on the other hand have been impressive in games this season and will want to exploit any cracks in the Coast armour. TIP: A fired up Stanmore Bay crowd to ease Coast home Mangere Utd vs Papakura City Centre Park @ 3pm A South-Auckland derby with Kura sitting rather surprisingly at the bottom of the table - Mangere however could be targeted by the away team for some points - especially as rumours are Harry Hillary Jenkins is back and Patrick George has moved on from Mangere - regardless there will be some goals as both teams leak a few. TIP: Kura need to bounce back and I pick they will come out on the right side of a 5 goal thriller Mt Albert Ponsonby vs Oratia Utd Anderson Park @ 3pm This years surprise pack has to be MAP - having not scored for the opening handful of rounds they have gone on a great run and now sit high in the table, Oratia look like they might have found their feet in this division and while i don't think they will trouble the promotion spots they look like they may hit mid table. TIP: MAP to continue their fine form
Waitakere City vs Metro FC Fred Taylor Park @ 3pm New league leaders Waitakere (and pre-season promotion favourites) have a massive game against fellow promotion candidates Metro who will want to claw back those three points Waitak picked up from Coast in our most recent eligibility scandal. TIP: Ytak just a little bit to strong across the park for the exciting Metro side. Ellerslie vs Franklin Michaels Ave @ 5pm The late game brings us an unusual clash - with both sides sitting in the bottom three of the table Certainly the home side will be disappointed after being in the promotion race the last couple of seasons - but there is still time to get back into midtable before reassessing that goal. Franklin will want to build on their win against near neighbours Kura in their last league game TIP: Sorry Franklin I'm picking a home side revival. North Shore vs BYE

FRANKLIN UNITED
MATCH REPORT - CHATHAM CUP Essentially we negotiated the first round of the cup – just to get Birkenhead in the next round! Oh, you want more detail – ok then! The Chatham Cup came around just at the right time – we were still struggling a little with our league form and the BYE combined with the Cup gave us a window of 6 trainings and two games (including this cup game) to prepare for Franklin United this coming weekend. We were not being disrespectful of the history and tradition of the Chatham Cup – we still wanted to win and in fact we put out a really strong team, but it was a progression step on our way to resolving our league form. In that aspect we were quite pleased to draw a decent side in the form of Takapuna – a side we knew would challenge us, and we could not afford to underperform against. Sitting at the top of a notoriously difficult NRFL Div 2 league, we knew they would have some handy players. What’s more we knew they would be up for the challenge, having been in the same division as us just last year, they had something to prove. Callum Brown in his new midfield role was certainly fired up, which was illustrated when he finished his warm up and burst into a rendition of Sweet Caroline with his team as they filed into the changing rooms. We also looked fired up and Tim Richardson was impressive in the pre-game shooting drill – he was hitting the ball so hard that I bet it would have knocked someone clean over had it hit them! One of the disadvantages of being so “media-friendly” is that it’s very easy for teams to figure out our lineup, shape etc from social media – but in my mind that’s a small price to pay in relation to getting information out to our many supporters – so I did have to laugh when cleaning up the changing rooms on Sunday morning I found a large A4 printout of our lineup against Waitakere stuck up on the wall in the Taka changing room – the irony being that from that game we had something like 4 players starting in the same positions – not sure that scouting would have helped! So on that note the changes to the team were – Jason Mann came back into the side after recovering from his injury in the second game of the season, Ryan O’Sullivan made his return to his natural CB role, Mike Glenny came into the side for the first time this season and Basha returned to the starting lineup after being away prior to the Waitak game. In the midfield Jordan Oosterhof won a starting spot after impressing during training and Alex Witteveen got his first start of the season as Isaac shuffled over to his more natural wing position. It might have been easier to list those who had not changed… too late now. By the time the game kicked off and Martin Pike lead the home side onto the park a decent sized crowd had built up – with KB’s Korner being full again which is a nice site – and plenty of fans from both teams packing the dugout touchline. We even had the pleasure of welcoming a staffer from NZF who was covering the game via twitter, I plan on stealing a couple of her game photo’s for later on in this report! Early in the game it became obvious to me that our shape was much more organised – Jason Mann was clearly one of the reasons for this as he organised and rallied the guys from his 18 yard box – Joe the Takapuna coach after the game exclaimed that they could hear him from Kiwitea Street! So apologies to any neighbours – but get used to it!! Ryan and Mike also lent their considerable experience (102 and 54 caps respectively) to our backline – we had experience on the bench as well as Tim Hawes (119 caps) made a comeback to backup Jason, having all that experience certainly helped our younger guys.

The first half Ellerslie defended the YMCA end of the ground and while both teams had a few chances the game was mostly played in the middle third as both teams energetically attacked each other – Taka did have a good chance which kissed off the crossbar without troubling the scorers. So halftime came and we had a pair of goose eggs still as match referee Mr Farnell blew his whistle right after this free kick had been defended.
The second half was a slightly different story as our apparently superior fitness began to show – truth be told I think Takapuna were not quite used to the high tempo of the game and possibly the size of the pitch – but to their credit they didn’t give up – which was obvious when they got a second wind late in the second half as they chased an equaliser. Isaac was the man to break the deadlock – as he has been so much of this season – as he received the ball in some space on the right and danced past a couple of players and slotted the ball home past the excellent Taka stopper! Not to be content with scoring he then provided an excellent reverse ball for Adam Scott who had made an excellent run across the Taka backline from the left – he picked up Isaac’s well weighted pass and slid it between the legs of the advancing custodian to double our lead.
It was classic linkup play for that second goal from our left and right wingers – an example of how to attack with 3 players in a 4-3-3 formation, so lads study that piece of video and let’s see more of that here: www.hudl.com/embed/team/229642/highlights/573905330aff7a43b4af96e1 So that was it and we ran out a 2-1 win after Takapuna pressed hard in the last 20 mins and were rewarded with a goal.
A few nerves played out in the last period of the game but we hung on and perhaps had to get another goal to be safe but the Taka stopper as previously mentioned was on fire! Man of the Match for us went to a player who always displays energy and in fact was asked in todays game to figure out how to do more by doing less – sounds backwards but I think he showed how devastating he can be in the clip above – Congrats Jordan! As it turns out we drew Metro in the next round of the cup – pop down to Michaels Ave on the 6th of June for that game – kick off 4:30pm.

FRANKLIN UNITED RESERVES
FRANKLIN UNITED
An unfamiliar name will be competing in the Lotto NRFL this year, with Waiuku AFC and Pukekohe AFC joining forces to create Franklin United. After a number of formalities and courtesies to be worked through, including internal meetings, discussions and open forums with club members, the Franklin United concept has become a reality at last. Franklin United spokesperson, Dale Oliver, says that the idea of clustering the two clubs has been around for a while. “Our recent efforts have exposed fragments of email chains regarding the Franklin United concept floating around for more than ten years (including the name).” “So, the need for sustainability and pooled resources have been known and understood for a long time.” With Franklin a small, but rapidly growing region, many high performing players have had to ply their trade elsewhere. It is something this club cluster hopes to stop. “The overall goal of the Franklin United cluster is to create a sustainable pathway to the highest level for football players and coaches within the region. We want to stop high performing players needing to leave the area to take up their football career elsewhere,” says Oliver. Despite the size of the region, Waiuku AFC have proved to be a successful club within the district for a number of years. Most recently being promoted to the NRFL Division One in 2015. This feat proved a learning curve for the club about the challenges that accompany football in the higher divisions.
28
“Having made it this far, it was clear that sustainability and having a stable and long lasting future for our young players had to be the goal,” says Oliver. “Thankfully, many like-minded players, coaches, committee members and supporters shared the same opinion and allowed the idea of clustering to gather forces.” Starting from scratch has been no easy task, but Oliver believes they are making good progress as the season fast approaches. “We have experienced the normal teething issues that come with change in management. But I think we expected most of this and are making headway. We have had to build a coaching and management team from scratch which takes time to settle and get on the same page.” With Carlos Roberto Paulette at the helm, many local players have had their chance to push for inclusion, whilst a few new players have signed from outside of the region along with some overseas players to improve the squad and competitiveness whilst they build the younger generation. The younger generation, has been one of the biggest positives so far. Oliver believes this year’s U19 side will be pushing for first team selection in a year or two. “One of the biggest successes so far has been our Under 19 representation. We have a very promising group of young players here that within a year or two will be knocking on the door of the first team.” “In the future it will be a case of setting up coaching and mentoring pathways into the junior clubs from around the Franklin region and through the school network to ensure that high potential players get the opportunity to improve.”
