PROUDLY PRESENTS

“THE AVE”

ELLERSLIE VS HIBISCUS COAST

WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE As the season passes the halfway point and hopefully the coldest winter nights are now behind us there are still plenty of football activity going on, locally, nationally and internationally. Our main focus is of course the visit of Hibiscus Coast to Michaels Ave this weekend in Lotto NRFL action, Craig and his team will view this game as crucial to their promotion hopes as do we – which means this will be a tense game, but hopefully one played with skill and the right attitude from both sides, that action commences from 6pm on Saturday evening. At 3:45pm on Saturday our Reserves have had a bit of a blip coming into the business end of the season and this has seen them give up top spot (albeit on goals scored) to Takapuna – this game against the Coast reserves is a chance for Fred and Dave and their team to get back to winning ways. Friday night see’s Fencibles take the short trip over the Panmure Bridge to face our Thirds in another game which has massive consequences for the top of the Div 2 as these two sides join two others in a four way tie for First – that game is a 7pm kickoff at Michaels Ave.

There has been other talking points this past fortnight as well with NZ’s shock disqualification from the Olympic games qualifying – there are several points of concern here including the welfare of both the player himself in question and the rest of his team, but I can’t help but think that NZ Football should be doing a better job as the gatekeeper of our sports credibility in NZ and in the world – The sad fact that there has been more mainstream media coverage of #wynnegate than there was of the recent U20 world cup is reflective of our sports standing here in NZ. I for one hope this is the catalyst for some improvement operationally from our national body! In international football Liverpool, Man City, Real Madrid and Roma have been touring Australia in what is becoming an annual occurrence due to the massive growth in the game there – The A-League has really kicked life into Football in Aussie and hopefully we can feed off their wins. A couple of club members went to watch the games, including a few first team players – so it will be good to welcome them back into the fold this week. Sunday we see our Women’s First Team who have gone from strength to strength this season take on newcomers Clendon at Michaels Ave, a win for the ladies there will see them in the hunt for a top 4 spot in what is a really competitive league. Plenty of good things has been said about our team both externally and internally and it’s good to see them enjoying their season! That game kicks off at 1pm. We hope all our visiting teams enjoy the facilities here at Michaels Ave and we invite you to come up and have a cold drink in the clubrooms after your game. ASB CHATHAM CUP

Cashmere Technical’s bid for a three-peat of ASB Chatham Cup titles will get its first North Island examination as the two-time defending champions host Auckland side Eastern Suburbs AFC in the competition quarter-finals in August. After the draw for the last eight was completed on Tuesday, Christchurch’s Cashmere – leaders of the Mainland Premier League – will entertain the current frontrunners of the NRFL Premier League Eastern Suburbs over the weekend of August 8 -9. While the hosts have a strong recent record in the national knockout cup competition – in its 89th year, their opponents also come with cup pedigree with Eastern Suburbs having won the ASB Chatham Cup five times in their history – the last coming back in 1969. Meanwhile, Suburbs aren’t the only Auckland-based club facing a long trip south – NRFL Division 1 Mangere United, the only club still alive from outside their region’s top division – face a trip to Football South Premier League club Dunedin Technical to meet the 1999 champions in the deep south.

Elsewhere, 2015 ASB Chatham Cup runners-up Central United – also five-time winners – will battle NRFL Premier League ri8

ASB CHATHAM CUP vals Birkenhead United AFC in a re-match of their dramatic 2014 third-round meeting which saw Central recover from a 3 -0 deficit with 10 men to advance. The last of the quarter-final clashes sees Central League rivals Western Suburbs host 2014 semi-finalists and four-time competition champions Napier City Rovers.

The tie brings together the top two sides in the Central League with Napier City Rovers currently holding an eight point lead over their Wellington-based opponents. In their only league meeting so far this year, Napier City were 5-1 winners at home.

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW Forrest Hill Milford vs Metro FC Becroft Park @ 2:45pm Top of the table FHM host surprise package Metro in one of 4 Saturday 2:45pm games this weekend. FHM have not lost since they went down 3-2 to Mangere on the 18th April and have been one of the most consistent sides this season. Metro on the other hand were an early season tip for relegation, but they have proved hard to beat for the top sides, so maybe a tight game here for the home side. PREDICTION: A draw - FHM to lead but Metro to claw it back 2-2 Ngaruawahia AFC vs Tauranga City United Centennial Park @ 2:45pm A WaiBOP derby of sorts as the Green Machine host the blues of Tauranga - the two sides have experienced vastly different seasons to this point but as pride comes on the line Ngaruawahia will be motivated to avoid two successive relegations. Tauranga had a slid 4-1 win against Ellerslie in their last game but can't go into this game thinking it's already won. PREDICTION: Hard to see the home side picking up points here Waiuku AFC vs North Shore United Massey Park @ 2:45pm The KU have had a decent debut season in Div 1 and this game will be one they think they can pinch as experience comes up against youth - few teams come to Massey Park and deal fully with the conditions, but is that enough to give KU the points or will the experience of Paul Temple be enough for the Devonport based side. PREDICTION: I'm not underestimating the difficulty of the KU pitch - this is a home side win Takapuna AFC vs Manurewa AFC Taharoto Park @ 2:45pm This is a ding dong classic relegation battle - the loser could be in some serious trouble. Rewa did their hopes a world of good beating fellow strugglers Narra last time out - but Takapuna have been unlucky in their recent results as well. Last time these two sides met was only on the 6th of June and Rewa took the honours on the Memorial Park pitch. It's going to be a tight game. PREDICTION: I'm going for Rewa to take the points and a massive leg up in the race away from the drop Ellerslie AFC vs Hibiscus Coast Michaels Ave @ 6pm Coast have troubled the home side in the past two years - but tpyically only at Stanmore Bay, the red's record at home isn't that bad against the green and whites. Ellerslie have a disapointing trip to Tauranga to recover from while Coast picked up a handy win against KU last time out. This will be an important game for both teams as they struggle to keep up with the top two. PREDICTION: I have to go for a home win but it could be tight and 1 goal in it. Mangere United vs Mt Albert Ponsonby Centre Park @ 2:45pm (Sun) South Auckland's highest placed side are extremely hard to predict this season - a good lineup has delivered on occasion but has also imploded from time to time as well. They will be without Botan Ibrahim for this game as he recieved a straight red last game - that's good news for MAP as he was on the scoresheet for MAP in the opening game of the season when Metro downed MAP in the New North Road derby. PREDICTION: It's a draw for me - MAP have heart, Mangere have flair - will cancel each other out.

NRFL MATCH REPORT What a weekend - lots of highs and a few lows but so much to write about. As per normal I will avoid the clichĂŠ of a typical match report, instead we will take a look at the lessons we can learn from our tribulations. At the beginning of the season every player has goals and one of them would be to get promotion to the Premier League for those in first team football. It's actually a very tough goal and one that usually ends in disappointment - consider that only 17% of this years teams will end up with their desired result - further consider that there is roughly 420 players* competing for honours in Div 1 and only 70 of those will end the season celebrating. That's pretty depressing but it tells another story as well, and that is that Football is actually more about dealing with not reaching your goals than celebrating them. Sad but true. *(based on 35 players per team)

That rather sobering fact brings me to my next point - and that is about how you deal with defeat, in a game or in a season. I personally am very proud of how the First Team handled themselves after our loss on Sunday, it's appropriate to be disappointed, frustrated and pensive straight after the game - but it shows great character to bounce back and be our jovial selves in the clubrooms and on the ride home. After all it is a game and while it can be cruel we can always rely on our teammates off the field to help us bounce back. The reserves were unlucky not to grab a win in their game on the number 2 field at Links Ave - the surface to be fair was extremely tricky but we had the majority of the chances including a very good penalty shout that was somehow denied by the man in the middle. It was great to see Ben Fletcher make his EAFC debut as he battled at leftback, Ryan Margison also had his first appearance at this level. Josh Torrens started his second game and played well enough to earn a spot on the First Team bench - this kid will go far! Final score in that game was 0-0.

NRFL MATCH REPORT Other positives:  Ben Shaw made a massive impact coming on upfront to disrupt a physical Tauranga backline.  Chris Kessell had another appearance off the bench for the reserves and lifted the tempo impressively.  The team bonding from the lads - both the Friday crew and the lads who came down on Sunday was good to see.  The desire from both teams on Sunday was clearly evident - our results were not from a lack of trying Some negatives to ponder:  Some of the refereeing could have been better, on potentially dangerous surfaces player welfare wasn't looked after by both match officials they didn't change the results but I don't think they will be happy with their performances  Cheap shots - I wasn't very happy with the amount of off the ball stuff employed by the home side, in both games there was a bit of niggle and it wasn't very nice to see.  Aftermatch speeches - I'm not sure if he was told to speak in satire but Andy Birchenough's speech after the game was ummm interesting - he went just short of calling us a dirty team before basically calling us arrogant - all disguised behind a charming grin and smooth accent - it didn't fly for me. Well after all that - it's a big Awh Come On as we take on Coast this coming weekend!

After some good preparation during the week and a good warm up the THE EDGE girls were ready to go comeGETTING the first whistle.
