“THE AVE”
ELLERSLIE VS MANUREWA
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Hi everyone and welcome back to Michaels Ave after what feels like an age due to the U20’s World Cup and Chatham Cup action - our last home game was Birkenhead in the Cup, lots has happened since then. Before we move onto todays games let me apologise for the short nature of this issue, some internet issues robbed me of the time and ability to provide as comprehensive cover as I would have liked - thanks Spark!
Today we welcome Hoani, Nathan and their team to Michaels Ave - Manurewa have had a resurgence this season with a lot of young players in their team, it’s good to see the youth being given a chance so we wish Manurewa all the best in what is shaping up to be a pretty tight relegation battle. We head into this game with another chance to close the gap to the top two, but we need to take no opponent for granted, as this league has proved time and time again upsets happen almost every week - so often it’s hard to pick what’s an upset and what’s an expected result. The league table is often a reflection of who is occasionally more consistent than the next team, rather than who is better which is the traditional viewpoint. Our Reserves have bounced back from a 1st round cup loss to record a strong win in the following round against Bay Olympic, and have also kept league results strong to keep themselves at the top of the table and on track for a double this season. We are starting to head into our events period, unfortunately we were unable to get the comedians we wanted this year so while that event is shelved for now we have some great events coming up - just see across this page to the right for more details. As always after the games have finished please join us up in the clubrooms for the formalities and a cold drink or some hot food. Don’t forget to check out our Wild Buck special (get a free Wild Buck hat by drinking the Buck) and our brand new Carlsberg tap special at $6 for an imperial pint.

ASB CHATHAM CUP
FORMER CHAMPS TO BATTLE Two Central Region clashes involving four former winners of the ASB Chatham Cup is the feature of the fourth round draw of the 2015 competition made on Tuesday. Wairarapa United, champions of the competition in 2011, will battle 2006 champions Western Suburbs for a quarter-final berth while 2009 winners Wellington Olympic will meet 2002 – and four-time – champions Napier City Rovers in the round of 16 on the weekend of July 11-12. Rovers currently occupy top spot in the Central League with a five-point lead over Suburbs while Wairarapa United sit in third spot, a point further back. Olympic sit in seventh place, 15 points behind the league leaders. In their respective league encounters in April, Napier were 4-1 victors over Olympic while Suburbs accounted for Wairarapa 5-3. Meanwhile, two-time defending champions Cashmere Technical of Christchurch host fellow Mainland Premier League side Coastal Spirit as their bid for three-straight titles rolls on. Cashmere, who have recorded 3-0 and 1-0 league wins over Coastal this year, sit atop the league standings with Coastal in fourth place. Further south, 1999 champions Dunedin Technical host Mosgiel AFC in the Football South-based round of 16 clash. In the Northern Region, 2014 runners up – and five time champions – Central United host Three Kings United while 2008 winners East Coast Bays AFC will visit Birkenhead United as the North Shore rivals tangle for a place in the quarter-finals.

ASB CHATHAM CUP Central took a 4-2 win over Three Kings to open the NRFL Premier League season in late March while East Coast Bays and Birkenhead took a point each from a 1-1 draw in May at Shepherd’s Park. Tauranga City’s cup run will continue as the NRFL Division 1 side look to knock out Premier League opposition for the second successive round when they host Eastern Suburbs. The four northernmost ties are completed by the match up of Division 1 Mangere United and Division 2 Papakura City.

NRFL MATCH REPORTS Sometimes in sport there are teams, or venues or times of the year that just cause massive amounts of concern - more than they should. Think the Blackcaps against Australia, until recently the NSW Cockroaches against the mighty QLD Maroons, Arsenal with their traditional post Christmas choke and the Warriors against pretty much everyone. For Ellerslie we have a significant bogey team already - Birkenhead, but Metro FC are starting to become a bit of a thorn in our side. After a complete toweling at Phyllis Street in the 2014 season when we smashed 8 past them with no reply. Metro had the last laugh though as they pinched a 31 win at Michael's Ave in the last game of the 2014 season which confirmed our Div 1 status for another year. This season we leapt out to a 2-0 lead in our home fixture before conceding two goals to only bank 1 point. Friday nights game at Albie Turner Field also followed a similar script. We shuffled the side a tad from our last competitive game against Takapuna with Andy and Alex swapping places and Callum Waters coming into the starting side for Mike Ritchie. It wasn't a great start though as Metro snuck down our left and their impressive number 19 tucked the ball into the net, 1-0 Metro. We continued to let their centrebacks play and while the odd long ball breached our backline we were dealing with them ok - one of our attacks we built up saw Jordy free down the right who rolled his marker and fired a ball across the goal, Josh collected at the far post and was able to get to the byeline and cut the ball across for midfield master Tim Richardson to poke home to level the score at 1-1. This goal seemed to spur us on and it wasn't long before we took the lead when Alex Witteveen nodded down a Martin Pike cross from the right hand side - this followed some more nice work down the left from the aforementioned Mr Anthony. 2-1 Ellerslie. Metro who showed lots of heart to go with their continued verbal abuse of the referee were lucky to win a corner late in the first half when a clear push by Rafi Mohammadi on Ben Shaw was unpunished by the referee - however nothing can take away from Stu Robert's headed finish at the near post, I'm told the near 40 year old has scored in every NRFL season he has played since he debuted at age 17. 2-2 So with the scores tied at halftime we talked about what we needed to do in the second half and largely we achieved what we targeted in the second half. A go a-head goal from Josh Anthony who latched onto a great through ball from Martin Pike looked like it was the catalyst for the floodlights to open. And we did have plenty of chances in the second half but a slight lack of general conditioning dulled our attacking edge and while reinforcements were called and came on and made a big difference it was one mistake in the second half which ultimately cost us maximum points. The Metro number 19 evaded our offside trap and was left one on one with Conor Tracey at the back and managed to slide the ball past Con, which is no mean feet as our GK specializes in 1 on 1 saves. We had chances to pinch the points with a 4th goal, but it just wasn't our day (or night) and we had to share the points again for the second time this season.
Josh Anthony having had a hand in all three goals (as well as technically playing two games in a

The Reserves game the following day was a scrappy affair - both on and off the field as a string of late withdrawals minimized our playing numbers, however the Reserves side this year have a tough mentality and they were able to bounce back from the disadvantage of a plethora of changes to put in an encouraging display. Rahul started at right back and made a good fist of it as well Mike Glenny on the road back from injury filled in at centreback and Isaac bounced back from sickness to take his place on the wing opposite Connor Watts. Like the First Team game the previous night the home team opened the scoring - a lucky goal when a hopeful though ball was cleared by Lloyd but the clearance took a chunk off the attacker and fell for his fellow striker to poke home into an unguarded net. It didn't take long for the football gods to return the favor though as Isaac profited from the Metro CB's error which left him only with the GK to beat - which he did to level the score. Two further 1st half goals to Isaac left the game with very little to play for in the second stanza however the reserves went about their work and battled away hard against a physical Metro side. There was no official announcement from the coaching staff but I suspect Isaac Brealey with his second hatrick for the Reserves this season would have gone pretty close.
