PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome to the Ave – for the 2nd week in a run of three home games! Today we welcome Nathan Christie and his Manurewa teams to Michaels Ave, Rewa have been running hot in the league recently and will be a challenge for our two Men’s teams. It should be an exciting game so see you down at Michaels Ave at 5pm for the First Team kickoff and 2:30pm for the Reserves. Our Premier Women’s side’s host Metro FC on Sunday in the middle of a challenging three week period for Jason, Nicola and their teams – no wins at Papakura last week and with the same opposition next week means these games against Metro are pretty important. Our ladies have been in good form this year so I expect to see them bounce back and push their visitors all the way! The Men’s Thirds who are in the middle of a title challenge in the AFF Championship Division also have a special game on Friday as they take on the Cook Island U20’s side at Michaels Ave on Friday Night with a 7pm kickoff. So some exciting fixtures on offer for the Michaels Ave faithful this weekend – and don’t forget to come up to the clubrooms after your games – Saturday night at 7:30pm we will have the All Blacks vs Wales played on the big screen. Last but not least there is some more good news as we have had a further part of Michaels Ave opened up by the council contractors this week – so we are working with them to see if this area can be used for training under the existing light pole, so we hope to have an update on that soon!
If you have any stories, photo’s or news to share with the club via this program please email them into me at chairman@ellersliefootball.org.nz Cheers Tim Senior Club Chairman ELLERSLIE AFC

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW Another week of the Predictor - last week we successfully picked 4 of the 5 games correctly (if you include our own game) with only Coast's narrow victory over Franklin going the opposite way to our pick. We had some pretty good call on margins as well so let's see if we can get a perfect 5 from 5 this week! METRO FC vs FRANKLIN UTD (Friday Night) Phyllis Street @ 7:30pm Friday night footy is back - this is a game I'm keen to go and watch and see how Franklin have improved since we played them. Metro continue to be a bit up and down as they won both their Queen's Birthday games but then lost to Shore the following week - maybe being at home will be the tonic they seek to put together some consistent form. PICK: Tough one - but i think Metro at home with a bit of travel on the southern for the Franklin boys could be the difference MANGERE UTD vs WAITAKERE CITY Centre Park @ 3pm Mangere are still seeking their first "official" win of the season - and they come up against Waitakere who are in great form having bounced Glenfield out of the cup and then smashing Kura last weekend - Mangere are a bit of an unknown quantity though as they pushed high flying MAP last week before losing narrowly. Most of the rest of the teams in the league will probably want Waitak to keep winning and Mangere to keep losing! PICK: Hard to go past Waitak, but they will have to play well to win - potential banana skin. ORATIA UTD vs NORTH SHORE UTD Parrs Park @ 3pm The battle of the targetmen as Tia's Mark Withers squares up against Shore's Dave Fahy - could be a bit of an aerial contest if the teams don't concentrate on playing the ball on the deck - If Shore can do that they have a dangerous midfield with Ed Sillars and their foreign playmaker in the 6 role. Oratia on the other hand need their midfield to support the big man upfront better as he can be deadly with numbers working off him. PICK: Hard to go past Shore who have put together a decent run of form. HIBISCUS COAST vs MT ALBERT PONSONBY Stanmore Bay @ 3pm While Coast hold the home advantage they will be missing some players as they had two marched last week against Franklin - in true Coast style they still came away with a win which is testament to their battling attitude. I can imagine it's been a tough month for the Coast side after their eligibility scandal - MAP on the other hand have been cruising after a slow start to the season, Scott and his band of ex Bay Olympic/Three Kings lads have been brilliant in May and will want to continue in June. PICK: Tough pick here - can't separate the sides - picking a 2-2 draw.
ELLERSLIE AFC vs MANUREWA AFC The Ave @ 5pm A very interesting tie - ponder back to round 2 of the season when Ellerslie won 7-2 at Memorial Park and you could be forgiven for taking two looks at the current league table. However Manurewa have been brilliant since that loss and deserved sit where they are in the table - Ellerslie on the other hand have struggled but this game could turn their season around. PICK: I think Ellerslie might find some form in this game - Manurewa are dangerous though so looking at a 3-3 draw - Thriller! Papakura City - BYE

MANUREWA AFC
MATCH REPORT It’s been a long time since we last scored a league goal and bagged some points – since the 91st minute of the game against Franklin – since then we have played 180 minutes against North Shore and Metro without troubling the scoreboard, but it only took us 7 minutes in today’s game to break our 187 minute drought. Read more about how that goal inspired us to bag only our 3rd win in the 2016 NRFL Div 1 season below: It was a decent Saturday night for this game – not a lot of wind (for Michaels Ave) and no rain which was nice and both teams looked focused for the game ahead. Oratia took the field in a newish looking strip, I have seen some shockers over the past couple of years, but I really liked the Tia strip – Dark Green with small yellow hoops. Very nicely done! Ellerslie looked to attack the School end of the pitch in the first half and as alluded to above it didn’t take long in this game for some reward. Tim Richardson in his final game for the club (more on that later) popped up at the back post from a set piece and put a diving header back across goal where Seb Poelman who had not scored a first team goal in 19 First Team appearances popped his header past Dave Self in goal – 1-0 to “The Ponies”… what a feeling! It seems when it rains it pours as Tim Richardson not content with an assist on his final appearance popped up from the right flank to break the Tia line and go one on one with Selfie in goal, who was unable to stop T-Rich from doubling the score – the decent sized home crowd went wild as we went 2-0 up. We kept on attacking for the remainder of the first half but were unable to increase our lead despite playing well with the ball as Alex combined well with Isaac, Tim and Adam Barkley in the oppositions final third. Dylan Horgan who was making his first start for the first team in his promising young career belied his 16 years of age as he tackled and passed like a veteran in midfield, it was an all action display! At halftime there wasn’t much to talk about – it was about refuelling and refocusing as we fired ourselves up for what would surely be a tough second half as Oratia fought for a comeback. To their credit Oratia did come out in the second half and hustle, we still played well with the ball but our space was a little smaller and we had a little less time as Tia tried to find a way back into the game. Our fitness held though and we come out of a tricky period to extend our lead on the 56th minute mark as Pikey made a strong forward run before passing it back to man of the moment Tim Richardson. Tim who looked like he had saved one of his best performances in an Ellerslie shirt for this game fired an excellent ball over the back of the Tia backline to the waiting Adam Barkley who took an excellent touch before sliding the ball past Dave Self to pretty much seal the points.
22
With the points all but secure we took off Alex, Isaac and Adam B to save their legs for next weeks crucial clash with Manurewa, with Art, Callum and Adam S coming on. These fresh legs really took it to the visitors as they kept battling to stop any further damage to the score line. One of the focuses pregame was on a clean sheet and the coaching staff and Jason were pushing the players right to the last minute of the game to make sure we kept only our third clean sheet of the season (all at home). At the final whistle we were relieved to have grabbed the points we so desperately needed and we were even happier when we checked the twitter after the game to see other results went our way – the end result was we jumped from 10th place to 7th place – this was on the back of a number of key performers in the game, in fact everyone played well but there was no doubt about today’s Man of the Match which went the way of Eden Masonry Home’s Tim Richardson! Congrats to the First Team lads and let’s build on this win for next weekend’s challenge against a dangerous Manurewa team who had their scouting party down watching this game ahead of next weekend! The Reserves as always played the curtain raiser and they set the tone for an exciting day of football as they ploughed 7 past Oratia Reserves, thanks to 5 different scorers. Special mentions to Connor Watts and Art Twigg who both secured doubles, Marcus Wright and Ben Fletcher who both made their first appearances of the season and Kojo Norku who was also making his final appearance as study takes him out for next term. So an NRFL clean sweep of 10-0 to Ellerslie but we can’t get ahead of ourselves as we need to focus on upcoming games – best of luck to Tia for the rest of the season as they like us battle for their place in the division – it’s a funny old league as luck plays a big part and if they keep battling like they did I’m sure they will pick up enough points to be in the league in 2017. Full Match Details: Ellerslie Reserves 7 (A.Twigg 2, C.Watts 2, M.Shohei, M.Glenny, OG), Oratia Reserves 0 (Halftime 4-0) Player of the Day: Monju Shohei Ellerslie AFC 3 (T.Richardson, S.Poelman, A.Barkley), Oratia United 0 (Halftime 2-0) Player of the Day: Tim Richardson
