PROUDLY PRESENTS

“THE AVE”

WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome to ANZAC Day football at Michaels Ave , and welcome to our main opposition today Mt Albert Ponsonby. Scott McKay has a rich history at Ellerslie AFC so it’s good to see him back today. Tim Hayhow is also an ex-Ellerslie player during the period when Scott was on the coaching staff. This years NRFL is a tricky beast - there seems to have been an unusual amount of upsets and apart from Coast no-one has really stuck their hand up as a front runner. Personally we have struggled with consistency and a little bit of a lack of luck in key moments - so hopefully we can rectify this issue and get back on track with our promotion goal. In the reserves we have put on a perfect record so far and it’s exciting to see some of the depth come through the club, there are two players from our U17’s who placed 4th in the recent ACFC Youth tournament in our NRFL Squad and a number of other youth players in our brand new NRFL Academy, These Academy players are typically those who have committed to school football this season and a very promising young players - the academy is a way to keep those lads still training with the NRFL squad and hopefully progress into the NRFL squad in the future years. Also for those ardent supporters out there we now have the 2016 NRFL Squad photo available (see mock up below) - if your keen to purchase one please email us on chairman@ellersliefootball.org.nz they are $16 for a 16 inch x 8 inch print.

Thanks to Auckland Sports Photography for helping us out with this photo shoot. Cheers Tim Adams Chairman - Senior Division FRONT COVER: Teams walk out onto Michaels Ave for the first NRFL home game of the season BACK COVER: Our Sponsor—Elite Lawn and Garden Services

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW The Preview looks at this weekends fixtures, will there be any upsets? Will we have a new league leader? See what we think below! PAPAKURA CITY vs METRO FC (Friday Night) McLennan @ 7:30pm Metro will be comfortable with a Friday night fixture, so have Papakura maybe given away their home advantage? Or will the trip south in the traffic for the Central Aucklanders be enough to put them off. Metro look like a talented attacking side, full of flair and movement and Papakura look solid, organised and structured could be an interesting game! TIP: Kura to nick this one 2-1 MANGERE UTD vs NORTH SHORE CITY Centre Park @ 3:00pm Both sides had disapointing results last weekend - Mangere had a convincing loss to Ellerslie and North Shore drew with Papakura - having seen the form book so far it points to a win for the maroons, but Mangere are always a side with a shout, especially if they can score early. TIP: Shore by a couple - Mangere on the rebuild WAITAKERE UTD vs FRANKLIN UTD Fred Taylor @ 3:00pm 3 places seperate these two teams who are new to the league this season - Waitakere have been solid with only the one loss but the goals have not quite flowed as freely as they would have hoped. They might be looking forward to the return of Dylan Manickum from UoA Futsal duty! Franklin are a team who not much is known about, can they get back to back wins? TIP: Waitakere just a bit too strong, win by 2 MANUREWA vs ORATIA Memorial Park @ 3:00pm Rewa shocked the league last week as they knocked off one of the favourites in Metro in a friday night classic at Phyllis Street - can they put back to back wins on the board? Brad Rathbun has been in lethal form and Tia will need to have a plan to stop the pacy goalscorer if they want any points. TIP: Rewa front 3 looks to be gelling, highscoring win to the home side HIBISCUS COAST vs ELLERSLIE AFC Stanmore Bay @ 3:00pm Bit of a grudge match this one - with Coast being a constant thorn in the side of Ellerslie's promotion campaigns the last couple of seasons, the away team will want to take 3 points back south and it will make their post game curry taste better with a pair of wins in the bag. Coast early leaders and will want to continue their hot form. TIP: Close game - maybe a draw depending on which Ellerslie side show up MT ALBERT PONSONBY (BYE) ANZAC DAY FIXTURES North Shore vs Hibiscus Coast - Allen Hill Stadium @ 3pm Franklin Utd vs Manurewa AFC - Massey Park @ 3pm Ellerslie AFC vs Mt Albert Ponsonby - Michaels Ave @ 3pm Oratia Utd vs Papakura City - Parrs Park @ 3pm Metro FC vs Mangere Utd - Phyllis Street @ 4pm

MT ALBERT PONSONBY

MATCH REPORT - ROUND 4 Round 4 saw us host our first home game of the season and the official launch of our Club Sponsors: – Elite Lawn and Garden Services, our NRFL shirt sponsor for 2016. – Physio Logic, our partners in player healthcare with their logo on our playing shorts for 2016. – Our numerous Individual Player Sponsors who have each been kind enough to support a member of the NRFL squad, click the link above to see more about our great sponsors. A big welcome to all of those sponsors and we look forward to working with them throughout the season. To the games – first up our Reserves lead by Ben Fletcher took on Mangere United who were at the opposite end of the table and on paper it looked like a bit of a mismatch. Traditionally Mangere have always struggled with their reserve sides, I don’t know if they don’t value the importance or if they struggle with coaching or there just isn’t the talent there – in any case they a typically a side that struggles. It was no surprise then that we were able to start very strong and secure a goal nice and early – Matt Sargent opened his account after pressing high from the left wing and was able to drive into the box after picking up a loose pass and slot it home in the opening minute of the game. Chances continued to come as we dominated the game but the Mangere Reserves side defended their goal in an un-orthodox manner which was frustrating for our side. One of the highlights of that period was when the GK for Mangere made a good block and then went and tackled one of our players with his head to save a goal – that was body on the line!

Alex made the all critical breakthrough in the 23rd minute when he channelled his inner Xabi Alonso, as he spotted the Mangere GK off his line and he sent a good shot over the keepers head and down the back of the net, a great Alex Witteveen goal and 2-0 to Ellerslie. Art Twigg then stepped up and nabbed two goals of his own to close off the first half – I didn’t see one of these goals but the one I did was a great piece of team play as we exchanged passes down our left flank and Ricky ended up with the ball in the 18yard box and delivered a nice flat pass for Art who was doing what good poachers do and got across his defender for a nice side foot finish past the Mangere GK. So halftime was upon us and we were sitting comfortable at 4-0 as Ben sat his team down to talk about the first half – he asked the team in the first half to compete for everything and I think we achieved that across the park. It was important that we didn’t let our performance levels drop in the 2nd half and give the visitors any sniff of a lack of intensity, and we certainly wanted to keep our clean sheet. I only saw bits and pieces of the second half but I think we failed a little to keep up our first half intensity, I’m sure Mangere stepped out in the second half and put that little bit extra in, but I think we could have been a little more ruthless. Regardless our efforts in the first half on the large Michaels Ave pitch meant the visitors ran out of puff as we entered the last 10 minutes of the game – this resulted in a couple more goals to Alex Witteveen as the focal point of our attack, his 2nd was a penalty after being lazily taken down in the box – which he easily converted and his third was a easy chance from right in front after some good build up play which left Harpreet with the ball which he played square across the 6 yard box to Alex. So as the final whistle blew we celebrated a 6-0 win and an excellent team performance against a Mangere side who were out of their depth but really tried their hearts out and could have caused us some issues had we not scored early – MOM points went the way of the hatrick hero (now 6 goals in 4 games) Alex Witteveen and the rest of the team also

22

picked up a point each to reflect the team performance. Four from four now for the Ben Fletcher led reserves and a challenging weekend ahead with Coast and MAP on the menu for ANZAC weekend – just keep that strong team spirit lads and it looks like a good season ahead.

Over to the first team game – as mentioned in our Official Match Day program “The Ave” the same game last season was an absolute epic as we came from behind to take all three points 4-3. We were hoping that this game wasn’t going to be quite as stressful as last year although supporters would complain about a 7 goal thriller. There were a few changes to the team from last week as Isaac Brealey and Dan McLean came back into the team – this meant a bit of a reshuffle in our front three as Christian moved there from left back to join Isaac and Adam S. Basha moved across from right back to left back so Dan could slot back into the team. Lloyd continued to deputize in goal for Jason Mann and U17’s star Keegan Smith took up the thankless role as RGK. Truth be told Mangere came out very strong and moved the ball around very well as they tried to isolate one of our defenders with their pacy #11 – they did manage this a couple of times and we had to call upon Lloyd in goal to make 2 quality saves to keep the scores at 0-0. After the second save Mangere seemed to lose a bit of confidence and we pounced on the momentum and launched a series of raids on the Mangere goal – one such raid saw Patrick George in the Mangere goal beaten by a long curling shot from Christian Niyonsaba after the ball fell nicely to him outside the box. That was such a critical goal as Mangere are such a momentum team and this goal stopped them in their tracks – We added a second just before the stroke of halftime as Tim Richardson broke his mini scoring drought of 2 games – again this was important in terms of keeping the upper hand.

At halftime the players lead the discussions about how important it was to keep our intensity and workrate high, Mangere are not well known for comebacks but we couldn’t afford to give them a sniff at points and the players recognised this. It only took 10 minutes in the second half for us to secure the points as Callum Waters thrashed at a loose ball outside the box which rifled into the bottom corner of the goal, aided slightly by a deflection off a defender. Patrick George frustrated by this took his anger out on a match ball by punting it over a neighbor’s fence – a petulant act which earned him a yellow card. It would have been nice if the referee had made us aware of this as well so we could have retrieved the ball – as luck would have it one of the spectators happened to catch the act and found the $100 ball later in the game. There was no more scoring action in the game, although we kept pushing forward we just couldn’t put the right move together as Mangere dug deep to make sure they were not embarrassed.

Man of the Match was an interesting one – and it went to a player who for most of the game wasn’t physically involved but his two quality moments early in the first half as well as an entire game spent organising his backline meant the points headed to Lloyd Huysmans – well deserved for Lloyd who has worked tirelessly on his game since joining our setup two years ago. A great comeback from last week’s frustrating game against Papakura as we look forward to an ANZAC day double header against league leaders Hibiscus Coast and Mt Albert Ponsonby…. Let’s give them some sauce!!
