PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
ELLERSLIE VS METRO & NORTH SHORE
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE It’s a massive weekend of Football at Michaels Ave – I think I added up just on Michaels Ave # 1 alone we have just over 800 minutes of football from Friday night to Monday night! Thank god for the artificial turf is all I can say! It’s been a stressful start to the season I must say, the staggered starts between NRFL, AFF Seniors and Junior/Youth season has made it very disjointed – that said we are lucky enough to have enough volunteers with plenty of experience to help us through – so thanks to those people, you know who you are! So moving on to welcoming this weekends’ visitors – our First major visitor is Metro FC who in a weird twist of fate we end up playing at Michaels Ave on a Friday (their normal home game preference). Recent results against Metro are extremely mixed, a first round win by some considerable margin was equally countered by a last round loss which sealed our Div 1 status for another season. This probably means very little to Metro as they are a much changed side and are much more consistent this year which is a good thing. The corresponding reserves game is on Saturday night at 5pm and it’s another chance for our young side to bank some important minutes and hopefully points. The other round 6 NRFL visitor is from Te Atatu, their reserves head down the Western motorway and face off against our 3rds in what will be an interesting game with both teams down a few players. That game is a 12:30 kick off at Michaels Ave. Slightly dwarfing those visitors is this very special fixture – on Friday night (at the same time the First Team are playing, sadly) an Ellerslie AFC Women’s Selection XI take on the Cook Islands National Women’s Team at Bill McKinley Park. A very special fixture and part of a growing relationship between the Cooks and EAFC. Following that the Ellerslie AFC Women’s First Team take on Eastern Suburbs on Sunday at 1pm, the home side Suburbs are looking to progress in the ASB Women’s Knockout Cup and they will need to be wary of our reputation in this competition after we twice took Three Kings to the edge in past seasons. Good luck to the Jason and his team in this one! Round 7 of the NRFL kicks off on Monday and our main visitors are North Shore with both First Team and Reserves coming to Michaels Ave – there was bugger all between Shore and Ellerslie last season with a 3-3 draw on opening day and a midweek 3-2 win to Ellerslie late in the piece. We expect this will be another tight game with Shore looking improved from last season already. We look forward to hosting Paul Temple and his teams in what should be a pair of exciting games – Reserves 3pm and First Team 5pm. Good luck to all the clubs other Senior teams (all 19 of them) this ANZAC Weekend, drive safe on your travels (esp our Thirds who travel to North Force on Monday) and of course play hard but fair on the pitch!

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW Round 6 Ellerslie AFC open up Round 6 on Friday Night at home against Metro and then they play the last game at home on Monday at 5pm to Shore on this double-header ANZAC Weekend. The other 10 fixtures across the weekend play out in-between - what will happen, see our predictions below:
Takapuna vs Mangere Taharoto Park @ 2:45pm Mangere got a good win last week by taking down promotion hopefuls FHM - but they have always been a team to blow a bit hot and cold, Takapuna after a bit of a cleanout are going along ok and will want to pick up as many points as they can so they can launch a late season assault on the promotion they so dearly want. PREDICTION: Both teams struggle in the defensive end - going for a high scoring game but I could see like a 3-3 draw! North Shore vs Hibiscus Coast Allen Hill @ 2:45pm Shore and Coast were the two teams who made it out of div 2 a couple of seasons ago and the battle for the title of champion went down to the last day between them, this year different stakes although both teams are looking like contenders for those coveted promotion spots. PREDICITON: After the high of beating MAP 10-0 and then struggling last week Coast will be fired up, but can see Shore taking it by two - 4-2 maybe? MAP vs Tauranga Anderson Park @ 2:45pm On paper this looks like another hammering for MAP, one of the top teams vs a team who have conceded 18 goals in two games? However one thing the side from Anderson Park have always had is heart and i expect we will see it this weekend - but will heart be enough? PREDICTION: thinking there will be a MAP bounce back but not enough to win, 3-1 Tauranga
Ngaruawahia vs Forrest Hill Milford Centennial Park @ 2:45pm The Green Machine from North Waikato will be desperate for a win, or at least a point - after a painful Premier League season they are already looking at the insult of successive relegations, however we have seen first hand that they have fight in them - could this be the upset of the day? PREDICTION: I don't think Narra will win this game, but they will at some point - FHM with a bit of a lack of confidence at the moment so maybe Narra can sneak it 1-0 and get their season back on track Waiuku vs Manurewa Massey Park @ 2:45pm Southern battle pits the highest placed South Auckland team (Waiuku) against the self heralded best club in South Auckland (Rewa) - in truth both clubs have impressed me, but Rewa in particular have struggled on the scoreboard. Waiuku will bank on home advantage but this game will be decided by finishing - Waiuku have it, Rewa don't. PREDICTION: Rewa to boss the game, have double the chances and lose 2-0 with some clinical finishing from the Franklin side.

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW Round 7 Our round 7 predictions will be made under the assumption that our round 6 predictions were 100% accurate (dreams are free). Forrest Hill Milford vs Manurewa AFC Becroft Park @ 2:45pm After what we are predicting is another shock loss against Narra in round 6, FHM will be keen to bounce back and I just can’t see their poor form continuing - it seems hard on Manurewa who are in my opinion improving with a young side. PREDICTION: FHM will bounce back and win 3-0 Ngaruawahia vs Hibiscus Coast Centennial Park @ 2:45pm A pair of ANZAC home games for the Green Machine - if as predicted they break their streak in R6 I can’t see them containing a pretty slick Coast side (infact even if they don’t win in R6 I can’t seem them taking much from this game), I just get the feeling that Coast have a bit more depth which is important over the long weekend. PREDICTION: 2-1 to Coast, a struggle for most of the game but just too much pace out wide Waiuku vs Mt Albert Ponsonby Massey Park @ 2:45pm Another club with dual home games this long weekend, can they book 6 points though? I still think MAP have too much pride to lay down for the rest of the season but the games don’t look any easier all of a sudden, that said I am predicting a much improved and resilient MAP side. PREDICTION: 0-0 draw, MAP to battle and battle away. Takapuna vs Tauranga Taharoto Park @ 2:45pm Surely a glitch in the draw to have so many teams playing both games at home during a long weekend? This is the 3rd of 4 teams who enjoy this treat. Spare a thought for Tauranga who have to travel twice that said Tauranga with a strong reserves side are one of the sides who have depth to cover this - Taka, well not sure. PREDICTION: Tauranga to keep pressure on with 6 points this weekend, 2-0 win. Metro vs Mangere Phyllis Street @ 3pm A battle of the M teams - in the past there has been a few things link these two teams, including past coaches and players - but more than anything both sides in recent history have had the air of unpredictability. This has hurt both sides more than helping them in previous seasons, but Metro seem to have shaken that tag off but I’m not sure Mangere are any different from last year. PREDICTION: consistency key for the win, 2-1 to Metro. Right now that we have entered the realms of fantasy football - let’s take a look how the league table “might” look after these predictions all (not really) come true. Of course have assumed two Ellerslie wins (sorry guys) Ellerslie Tauranga North Shore Metro Hibiscus Coast Forrest Hill Milford

CHATHAM CUP QUALIFYING ROUND The qualifying round for the 2015 Chatham Cup has been drawn and it features a number of ASFA sides as well as the odd school team - it will be interesting to see who makes it through to the first round proper!
Glen Eden Rangers (Conference) vs Viet Guys FC (ASFA) Kerikeri (NFF) vs Drury (AFF Div 2) Te Puke Utd FC (WaiBop) vs Auckland Volcanoes (ASFA) Puhoi Wolfpack (NFF) vs Sacred Heart College (School) South Auckland Rangers (Conference) vs Internationale (ASFA) Ngongotaha (WaiBop) vs Colo Boys (ASFA) Kawarau Sports Club (WaiBop) vs Papatoetoe United (AFF Champs) Waikato College (School) vs Bohemian Celtic (ASFA) Auckland Wanderers (ASFA) vs Matamata Swifts (WaiBop) University of Auckland (ASFA) vs Zamantix (ASFA) AUT FC (ASFA) vs Te Aroha Cobras (WaiBop) FC Old Boys (ASFA) vs Waiheke United (AFF Champs) Some tasty matchups there - and most notably some absences with St Kents, Auckland Grammer and MAGs not in the draw. Some of our old favourites are in action, namely Ngongotaha and Matamata - we wish them all the best of luck in their cup ties.

WOMEN’S FIRST TEAM It’s an exciting weekend for the women’s first team - as mentioned previously in the program the GETTING THE MENTAL EDGE women’s side of the club has two massive games scheduled. FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT 5 games into the 2015 season and we are considering this the end of the 1st period of games - or as we like to refer to it as "The Base". This weeks report won't focus on teams, goals etc - instead we are going to focus on what we have achieved in the 1st period of the season aside from the obvious excellent results. For us "The Base" covers the period from when pre-season starting forming teams and playing games until Saturdays game. It's a vital period when done properly as it gives teams the chance to come into the season fit, organised and well oiled. It means all that hard work we put you through pre-season gave us a tangible advantage in "The Base" period. That advantage is a 1 point buffer between us and 3rd. The thing about "The Base" period is that other teams quickly catch up between rounds 1 and 5 and you can't rely on work done in "The Base" to keep giving you that edge you need. Our challenge now is to work even harder in what we have termed "The Consolidation" period - it's a much easier period with some good form from "The Base" but it's also the time when if not properly focused you can undo all the good work done previously. Ever heard the phrase championships are not won in the first half of the season but they are lost - well that's what we need to keep in mind! Consider these stats
2010 - our first 11 games unbeaten - final league position - 1st (lost in playoffs) 2011 - our first 2 games unbeaten - final league position - 4th 2012 - lost first game - final league position - 2nd (and promotion) 2013 - lost first game - final league position - 9th (and relegation) 2014 - our first 6 games unbeaten - final league position - 6th
While there is no direct pattern to a good base and a "winning" season it's clear to me that if we don't focus during "The Consolidation" and "The Grind" periods we will be out of the picture when we come to "The Run In" period. Here are some stats to show what our performance levels have been in "The Base" period - the general expectation is over the course of the next two periods we should be able to increase each stat by a couple of factors, we certainly don't want to see a drop!

RESERVES REPORT Match Report Ellerslie Reserves vs Tauranga Reserves
Prior to the game and during warmup it looked like this was going to be a wet game – very wet! But as we were walking out to kick off the game Auckland came to the rescue and changed its mind and served us sunny skies for the rest of the afternoon. Apparently it kept the rain going in Tauranga!!
Bolstering the team this week was another First Team senior player on his road to recovery – this was Dom Higgins and he quickly like Isaac last week made his mark when he potted two first half goals among some other fine work on the right wing. There was some good football played in that first half and while it wasn’t all our own way as Tauranga were showing signs of good play we forced our tempo and style of play on the contest. I wasn’t privy to the halftime discussions but what the team laid out in the second half was a poor comparison to their first half efforts. I hope this was due to an increased effort and foothold in the game from the visitors rather than a lack of desire or effort from our lads – I’m sure the former was the case as this is a good bunch of lads – and within the team each week there are guys who are at different stages of their football life – we have a couple of players who are right on the fringes of First Team football and they need to perform in this arena, there is also a couple of First Team players who were after minutes for one reason or another and it’s important they play to a high level personally week in week out. The rest of the team is made up of guys who are either in their first year in Reserves and are on a steep learning curve and developing along nicely or they are in their 2nd and 3rd seasons and are just adjusting their games to take the next step up. Basically what I am trying to say here is each and every player needs Reserves for one reason or another – so if you are in the team and you’re not giving 100% you’re not being fair to those around you! Still can’t be too critical as the results have been good and players when given their chance to step up from reserves to first team (Jordan for example) have put in good performances so things are looking promising as we work forward. The final score in the above game was 2-1 and while we banked the 3 points we have plenty to work on with two tough games this weekend coming up. If you turn up both days ready to play – there will be no issues!

THIRDS REPORT Last week saw the first Friday night game under lights at the Ave for the third team who were looking to continue their steam rolling start to the season and stay top of the table vs Onehunga Mangere. The thirds had played Onehunga Mangere in preseason so had confidence going into the game. There was a substantial amount of pressure applied in the first third of the game, this resulted in play being dominated by the thirds. Scoring was opened by a cracking header back across the goal by Glen Jones from a Ben Pauley corner. After further sustained pressure a piece of individual brilliance from Tim Covey further extended the lead after he darted around the majority of the right flank of Onehunga Mangere to slot home from a tight angle. Ben Pauley added a third right before the break to give the team a commanding 3-0 lead going into half time. The thirds did come into some trouble after the break through a lack of passing options and a sustained bit of high press from Onehunga Mangere but did not concede any chances through this period. Eventually the thirds took back dominance of the game but failed to take any more chances. A 3-0 victory and another clean sheet for the thirds is very pleasing for the team and they remain top of the table with a big weekend of games ahead and missing the post hitting threat of Ben Pauley.
