PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome to Michaels Ave for another action packed weekend of Footy. This weekend’s focus is on cup football with both our Men’s and Women’s teams featuring in cup competitions – you can read all about those competitions on page XX.
Our main games this weekend see our Men’s First Team and Reserves host Metro in League and Chatham Cup action, so welcome to Mike, Ants and Stu and their teams. Lynn Avon is the other major visitor to Michaels Ave this weekend, Dan Cope brings his Premier Women’s team to Ellerslie in ASB Women’s Knockout Cup action. This weekend is a big opportunity for Chris and his team to turn around their league form and get some points on the board – it has been a challenging year with injuries to key players and player eligibility scandals rocking the league not once, but twice so far. Only a brave betting man would wager against another one at some point. I have checked and rechecked our side so I’m confident we won’t end up with an issue like this but it pays to continue to be diligent and continue to check. In better news we are happy to officially open Michaels Ave # 4 last weekend for a juniors game – this weekend Div 3 Elks have the honour of playing the maiden senior game on our new field, before more importantly we host a massive ASB Women’s Knockout Cup game there on Sunday. We are hoping to get some more training and game venues available at Michaels Ave in the next month which will really help alleviate our congestion on the artificial field. It’s congrats time for Martin Pike who when he skippered the team against North Shore last weekend notched up 50 First Team caps for Ellerslie, Alex and Isaac are next to hit the milestone as they both sit on 45 caps heading into this weekend! Just one small housekeeping issue – we seem to have a small criminal element at the Reserve at the moment so please make sure to keep all valuables with you at all times and just in general keep your eyes open for anything that doesn’t look right. So best of luck to everyone this weekend – I look forward to seeing you up in the clubrooms after your game for a cold beverage and some hot food! Some interesting match ups - particularly for the historians among us with our Women’s First Team matching up against our old enemies Lynn Avon. These two teams contested three straight “Uncle Toby Cup” finals in the early 2000’s, Lynn Avon won 2 and Ellerslie pinched 1 with help from one Maia Jackman - who these days lines up for Lynn Avon! In the Chatham Cup our Men’s team drew the same opposition they play in the league only two days prior to this cup clash - so that will be interesting to see how that plays out. In the AFF Women’s Knockout cup all our teams have drawn opposition from leagues below so there is a decent chance we could get all 3 teams into the next round! And finally in the Northern Knockout Cup we have a lot of Eastern Suburbs and Western Springs games - Spare a thought for our div 6 Barons side who have picked up a tough game against a Div 1 side, Elks also face a tough challenge as they step up from Div 3 action to play an AFF Championship team. It can be done as Hicks showed last year as they beat a Conference and a Conference reserves side on their way deep into the competition.

NZ WOMEN’S KNOCKOUT CUP - Story by NZ Football (full article here) There is an intriguing blend of matches in Round 2 of the Women’s Knockout Cup with a top-of-the-table Mainland clash, a repeat of several previous finals and the guaranteed progression of a lower league team all featuring. The official draw for the second round was conducted today at the New Zealand Football headquarters in Auckland under the supervision of Terry Hobin, Competitions Manager at the Northern Football Federation, and there was little doubt about the standout fixture.
Cashmere Technical and 2013 cup winners Coastal Spirit are currently tied at the summit of the Mainland Premier League but Cashmere will go in as slight favourites after triumphing 3-0 in the league meeting between these sides just over a month ago. In the north, Ellerslie’s hosting of Lynn-Avon United will be noteworthy for footballing train spotters as it brings together the clubs that contested three consecutive finals from 2001 to 2003. Lynn-Avon won two of those finals so AFF/NFF Conference side Ellerslie will be out for revenge and may fancy their chances as the west Aucklanders are currently languishing at the foot of the NRFL Premier League without a point to their name. Remarkably, a survivor from that 2001 final is likely to take the field as Football Ferns icon Maia Jackman, who is about to celebrate her 41st birthday, has answered an SOS call from Lynn-Avon this season. The former international skipper will be wearing a different kit this time though as she played for Ellerslie in those earlier finals.
Also crossing paths with a former club will be fellow ex-Football Fern Marlies James (née Oostdam), who now plays for AFF/NFF Conference leaders Papakura City and will find herself in familiar surroundings at third-placed NRFL Premier League side Eastern Suburbs. Anything other than a Suburbs win would be considered an upset there and it will be a similar situation up at Stanmore Bay, where Conference outfit Hibiscus Coast will host Glenfield Rovers, who have won the Women’s Knockout Cup in both of the past two seasons. While it remains to be seen whether an unfancied side can make it through in either of those fixtures, there is guaranteed to be a lower league team in the hat for the next round after Rotorua United and Central United were drawn to meet each other. AFF/NFF Championship leaders Central will take some beating as they are yet to drop a point in the league this season and have conceded just two goals in their six matches so far. But the hosts are also performing well in the WaiBOP Premier League and have tasted defeat only once so it will be difficult to pick a winner. The second round of the Women’s Knockout Cup will be played over the long weekend of June 4-6 with clubs confirming the details for these fixtures with their federations and New Zealand Football. Women’s Knockout Cup Round 2 Draw (to be staged June 4-6) Northern: Hibiscus Coast vs Glenfield Rovers Eastern Suburbs vs Papakura City Forrest Hill-Milford United vs Papatoetoe Western Springs vs Norwest United Claudelands Rovers vs Three Kings United Rotorua United vs Central United Metro vs Hamilton Wanderers Ellerslie vs Lynn-Avon United

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW It’s preview time again - as a rare treat we will be looking at the Lotto NRFL Div 1 clashes for Saturday and also who those teams play on Monday in the Cup - lot’s a games to consider! Mt Albert Ponsonby vs Papakura City (Friday Night) 7pm @ Anderson Park Red hot MAP have with a combination of good form and another eligibility scandal from Centre Park have settled themselves in the top 4 - Papakura have also picked up points from the scandal and while their midtable position doesn’t look to bad will they be up to the challenge at the Anderson on a Friday night - better teams have struggled there! TIP: MAP by a couple CUP: MAP away to Melville, trip might be too much for them, Kura at home to ECB in what will be a massive challenge for the South Auckland side. Waitakere City vs Manurewa AFC 3pm @ The Fred A battle of way out west vs way out south - or just a top of the table clash for the traditionalists - will be a good game as Waitakere pit their technical ability against the raw pace and power of Rewa. TIP: Rewa are good, but Waitakere for me are best in class CUP: Waitak face a tricky trip north to McFetridge to take on Glenfield - could finish in pens! Franklin United vs North Shore United 3pm @ Massey Park Shore head south to the divisions newest side as both teams have more points in their pocket than this time last week - Shore earned theirs by beating Ellerslie and Franklin were rewarded as part of the lastest episode of the #eligibilityscandal. Shore probably too good, but don’t write Franklin off they have a decent side able to compete at this level. TIP: Shore by 1 or 2 CUP: Shore stay south as they take on cup Cinderella side Manukau while Franklin face off against big spending FHM (enter Ryan de Veries).
Ellerslie AFC vs Metro FC 3pm @ The Ave The Red and Blacks take on the Black and Reds - something like that…. Anyway this is an intriguing fixture as it repeats on Monday in the cup with the same venue and a slightly later kick off time. The table would suggest the away team would take some easy points in this fixture, the challenge is to prove the table wrong. TIP: Just not sure what to expect here CUP: Win could go to the team who pick up the least injuries from Saturday… Hibiscus Coast vs Mangere United 3pm @ Stanmore Bay Both teams have had their seasons derailed by points deductions - Coast have shown that this can rattle them, so it will be interesting to see how Mangere react. Both teams are decent sides and they will be keen to make up for lost time (points) ASAP. TIP: Home advantage and the rawness of Mangere’s deduction will give Coast the points. CUP: Coast have the advantage of facing an non-NRFL team in the next round in the shape of Bucklands Beach, while Mangere are supposed to face off against Springs but I would not be surprised to see Ngaruawahia replace them at the last minute.

MATCH REPORT - Round 9 It was a big weekend of football for Ellerslie – a potential banana skin fixture for the reserves against the bottom of the table Shore side who fielded two ex premier league players in Sam Jenkins and Sam Jasper in midfield, or the First Team looking to reverse some poor results in the first half of the season, or could it be the tricky trip the Women’s First Team made all the way up to Whangarei to play Northland FC on Sunday.
RESERVES Let’s start with the reserves as they opened up the weekend of football – somewhat surprisingly the build up for the reserves was a little disrupted as we waited for players to roll in, we had warned them about how long it could take to negotiate Lake Road and while some had listened it seemed others had not. Anyway they all arrived eventually and we got into focus mode for the game (as seen below) Selections had been tricky this week with quite a number of players still down from First Team looking for conditioning or form – which meant a few players missed out – but with two games coming up over Queen’s Birthday it will be an all hands on deck weekend. So a strong lineup was put out with Jordan in goal and Dan and Pete infront of him – Ricky made his comeback from injury in the leftback slot and Griffin lead the side from rightback. Midfield saw Zac back in the starting lineup and he partnered Monju, while Tom sat in the 10 role. Kojo and Yoshi filled the flank positions and Art took his spot upfront. It was a bit of a shock then to concede the first goal – a good move from Shore gave them an opportunity, and the shot was well hit – strong enough that Jordan could only deflect it towards the post but alas not beyond it. However we didn’t give them the lead for long as Tom Durkin slammed home a low shot only 3 mins later to level the scores – we proceeded to dominate most of the rest of the half with goals from Kojo and Zac before we conceded a second from shore just before the halftime break. That wasn’t the scoring over though as Zac popped in another with a great header in first half injury time. Some words of concentration from Ben at halftime and some lollies onboard saw us make a flying start to the second half with a goal inside the opening 3 minutes (to Art) to make the game a little more comfortable at 5-2 – we never looked in danger of losing points from here as North Shore battled hard but just couldn’t find what they needed to get back into the game – further insurance goals from Monju and a Shore own goal sandwiched a red card for Sam Jenkins (unsurprisingly) for retaliation for a shirt pull? To Shore’s credit the loss of a man didn’t really effect them and they kept their heads down and worked hard – evidenced by the fact we could only score 1 more goal in the rest of the game, which was Art’s second. This meant the final score was 8-2 with doubles to Art and Zac and first goals for Tom and Kojo with Monju and Oggie pitching in. James Foad made his first appearance off the bench in a tidy spell of 22 minutes and Connor Watts continued his recovery from injury with a 45min spell on the wing. But MAN OF THE MATCH had to go to Art Twigg who was dangerous throughout the game and could have had a hatrick and deserved one for all his hard work and excellent hold up play – Congrats Art! FIRST TEAM In the first team game we went with a largely unchanged lineup – our back 5 was the same as when we played Franklin, we did make a few changes in the middle of the park with Adam Barkley coming in for Tim Richardson while Callum Waters and Adam Scott swapped as well. We did start the game well, with Alex in particular causing their centre back pairing some issues – his increased physical approach was unsettling the Shore backline, we just couldn’t make it click enough times to really exert enough pressure on the home side. That said Adam Barkley smashed a great shot against the post from some distance and Alex Witteveen was unlucky to not quite reach a near post

cutback which would have been almost impossible to stop. At the other end I thought we defended reasonably well in the first half as Mike did his best against the pacy Shore winger – Stefan was dealing with anything in the air while Ryan and Basha together with Jason organised the backline and the lads in front of them well. It wasn’t really a game for midfield as the ball often was bypassing both sets of players – it might have been one of those games when having six players in the middle of the park was a little bit of a waste as they just closed down passing channels for their own team as much as the opposition. Still I thought we did a good job defensively and the dangerous Shore striker was unable to receive much service at all. When the halftime whistle blew it was still doughnuts and we wandered off to the sheds for a bit of a chat and a refuel. Mike Glenny was unable to continue after taking an elbow to the face late in the first half, that and the Shore speedster had taken a bit out of him. so on came young gun Dylan Horgan to make his first appearance of 2016 – it’s great to see these young players come on and in Dylan’s case look so at home and relaxed with the ball and solid on defence. The second half was very scrappy as both teams wrestled for some kind of dominance and played with a tempo that to be fair was much higher than the collective skill level on the field. Alex who had been an outlet for us in the first half was not being given quite the same service as he received in the first half, and while he battled away for every ball that came near him, it just wasn’t very effective in the end. We struggled to get our front three involved for most of the second half to be honest and while Jordan was energetic and Isaac was threatening down their respective wings it just didn’t eventuate into anything tangible most of the time. One could point to a good scrambling defence from the home side, and while that was a factor, I think we were also just a little off our stride for some reason. The goal that broke the deadlock (and our hearts) came in the 60th minute as Shore were able to get the ball into our box on our right and then play it back across to our left where the pacy ginger winger was able to square a ball across the 6 yard box which went right to Eddie who was able to swivel and place the ball high past Jason. If that wasn’t descriptive enough check out this handy visual explanation of the goal below here. It’s fair to say we did threaten to equalise in the remaining 30mins, but half chances were often snuffed out by cover defence or shooting opportunities missed – Adam Scott and Jordan Oosterhof had our best chances of that period but both were unable to get a quality shot off under pressure from the home side. When the final whistle blew we were gutted at not being able to get any points – we had played ok for most of the game and well in patches so it was understandable that we felt we deserved something – but that’s football and we need to get back to training on Tuesday and Thursday and work our butts off proving we can deliver the performances our collective ability level promises. It’s not good enough to be a good team on paper, we need to be a good team on the field! I am pleased with the team spirit off the field despite our poor run of form – the lads do care and are trying to right the wrongs of our season, there are people who could do more though, and if your reading this and thinking could I do more – then more than likely you can. Man of the Match against Shore for the First Team was a pretty easy call – no one else displayed the type of desire and passion that he did when we were chasing the game and we have improved out of sight defensively since he has come back into the team – so the rewards go to Jason Mann who is proudly sponsored by Primero Profiles Ltd.
So next week we have a massive double header against Metro – 1st up on Saturday is our final league game of the first round and then on Monday on Queen’s Birthday we have Metro again in the Chatham Cup – both games at home.
