PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
ELLERSLIE VS NGARUAWAHIA UNITED
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Today is our penultimate round of NRFL action for 2015 in what is the 50th year of Lotto NRFL (or some kind of variant). In 1965 we started off in the then Northern League in Div 1 B along with clubs such as Onehunga, Metro College, Grey Lynn, Otahuhu Rangers and Pukekohe Ramblers. We finished bottom that year with 2 wins and a draw alongside 13 losses. Our second season in Northern League Football we competed in Div 2 A alongside some better known modern clubs such as Manurewa, Onehunga Mangere and Central United. We finished in midtable in 1966 while Kahukura (whoever that is) won the league and Sparta Newmarket got the wooden spoon. The undoubted highlight of our Northern League time was back in 1993 when our George Ritchie led First Team took our maiden Premier League title. With 15 wins from 22 games we took the title by 3 points off Lynndale and wrote ourselves into the record books. We didn’t compete in the Northern League again until 1997 as we spent the next three years in the Bluebird Super Cup finishing 5th, 4th and 6th in those three exciting years. From highlights to lowlights – our saddest moment was when we were finally relegated from the Premier League after 27 years of top flight Northern League football, a stint that gave us one title and numerous good times and excellent players to watch. In more recent times we have been back into the Premier League – albeit briefly in the 2013 season – and while we only lasted the one season it was nice to be back in the big time.
In my experience of watching NRFL football since the late 1990’s (so a relatively short association with the league in comparison) I have found the league currently lacks the real technicians found in earlier times, for Ellerslie the Terry Torrens and the Scott Halls of this world. Instead the NRFL has turned into a battle of athletes – coaches have turned to players who can plough through work week after week and this has two effects, the game is faster than the ability of most players – pressing and counter pressing means those midfield magicians don’t have the time on the ball they used to and error rates are high. It’s not all bad though as a high tempo game can be a good thing to watch and it’s up to our coaches now to meld athletic ability with technical and tactical proficiency. That’s probably as much history as we can handle today – let’s focus on what we have in store for us this weekend. Firstly our main visitors are Ngaruawahia who come to us a little bit desperate for points and we do wish them well in their quest to stay in Div 1 as they are a well organised and genuine bunch of football people – we welcome them to Michaels Ave for both games! Tonight is also the focus of one of our Club Fundraisers as we try something a little different – A Craft Beer Night, feel free to join us up in the clubrooms from 7pm to taste your way through some Pale Ale’s, some Pilsners etc etc. Lastly just a quick look at some player stats – milestones might be a better way to describe them. Congrats to the following players for making their First Team debut’s since our last program: Myron Manickum and Tevin Smith FRONT COVER: MOM Andy in action against Waiuku BACK COVER: Isaac races away to score the first goal against Waiuku
2
Also congrats to the following players for reaching 10 career first team goals Isaac Brealey and Josh Anthony And all things going to plan we are about to have two more half centurions as both Freddie Ljungberg and Andrew Wallace sit on 48 First Team caps – great stuff guys! Cheers Tim Adams (Chairman - Senior Division)

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW North Shore vs Metro 2:45pm @ Allen Hill Stadium They may have lost out on the title by one David Mulligan free kick last week but Shore still have the upper hand on the 2nd promotion spot, and they won't want to come across Metro in giant killing mode. The Phyllis Street based team have taken back to back wins over promotion hopefuls Coast and Tauranga in the last two weeks and will want to add Shore to that list. Mt Albert Ponsonby vs Forrest Hill Milford 2:45pm @ Anderson Park FHM popped the champagne last week when they clinched the title and their second successive promotion, they will want to finish off their last two games with two solid performances. MAP have two home games left and they will want to make the Anderson Park faithful happy with two good performances. Waiuku vs Takapuna 2:45pm @ Massey Park A bonofide relegation battle between 11th and 10th place and while the away team hold the marginally higher league position 'Ku have the advantage of four games in hand. Takapuna come into this game on the back of a 1-0 win against MAP and will really put some pressure on Waiuku if they can win this - The Massey Park crowd will want the 3 points though which will go a long way to securing their status. Hibiscus Coast vs Manurewa 2:45pm @ Stanmore Bay While not mathematically out of contention for the promotion race Coast will need 6 points from their last two games and they will also need to shake off losing 4-0 to Metro last time out. Rewa on the other hand are pretty much safe and will want to use their remaining games to build on their improvement this year. Ellerslie vs Ngaruawahia 3:00pm @ Michaels Ave The Ponies have two home games left and they need maximum points if they are to keep their slim promotion chances alive, and Ngaruawahia proved a tough nut to break down last time - It's not all gone for the Green Machine though as they have a handful of catch-up games left and while they need some other results to go their way 3 points off the home side will make it a good start. Tauranga vs Mangere POSTPONED The Bay Of Plenty side have to sit this weekend out as Mangere take on Eastern Suburbs in the semi-finals of the ASB Chatham Cup, but this will mean Tauranga will have a long run of catchup games they will have to win to possibly gain second spot and promotion.

NRFL MATCH REPORT I don’t remember the last time we beat Mangere at Centre Park (2009 with a 2-1 win apparently) and I certainly don’t recall the last time we took 6 points off them (because we never have) so if you take our performances in both games against the Chatham Cup Semi-Finalists as a barometer of our improvement then the signs are good! On aggregate over the two games we have played them this season we have scored a healthy 8 goals and conceded 4 – so not a bad effort! Probably the two games I looked at with the most concern this season was Waiuku away and Mangere away, especially as they were both late in the season and back to back. How would we cope with the grass pitch at both venues – pitches which were sure to have been worn by the rigors of the season to date. It turned out I fretted for no reason as we have proved despite not training on grass once this season that if you have your mentality (and footwear) right you can play on any surface – Mark that down as another improvement from previous years! On the games themselves – Reserves opened the day with the traditional curtain-raiser and they were again short a few players so reinforcements were gathered as we prepared to battle for 3 points to keep us ontop of the title race, particularly seeing as Takapuna, Shore and FHM all only gained 1 point on the Saturday. Young Dylan Horgan joined Josh Torrens in a youthful midfield – Ellerslie fans of yesteryear will remember those two surnames linking together in First Team games many times – something I am sure we will see again before too long. Harry Sage skippered the team from CB as he continued his return from self-inflicted European exile. There were a few highlights from this game – let me run you through them now (in no particular order) - Luke de Ruiter capped off a MOM performance with 90 mins and 2 goals with some great movement in the Left Forward position – his first goal after closing down the oppositions full back and finishing from a deft angle was great to watch - Ben Fletcher who was relishing back to back games smoked in a volley from a poorly cleared corner to open his account - Adam Scott provided one of the best headed passes I have ever seen as he deftly guided an aerial ball that was smashed at him into Luke’s path for his second goal - Monju with his only completed tackle of the game on the Match Official – it was a foul but not surprisingly the Ref missed it. - Ben Pauley who endured a miserable Saturday looked to have turned it all around with a goal at the death but the post and then the GK were determined not to give him any respite. All in all other than a few little incidents I thought the reserves did well to keep playing football and keep their cool in the face of an overly aggressive Mangere side who seemed hell bent on injuring someone – unfortunately young Cam who made a big impact in the second half picked up a knock to his arm but early signs are that he will be ok. Full Details: Ellerslie 4, Mangere 0 (halftime 2-0) Goals: L.de Ruiter 2, M.Shohei, B.Fletcher MOM: Luke de Ruiter In the first team game we faced a much changed Mangere side as they looked to wrap their players in cotton wool before their Chatham Cup semi against Suburbs next week – not the approach I would have taken myself but it worked in our favour so you won’t hear me complaining to vocally. Still you have to beat what’s put infront of you and that was our plan no matter who played so it was nice to see the lads stick to that approach throughout the game. In truth it was a funny old game, with a few similarities to

NRFL MATCH REPORT the 1st round clash – I thought Mangere probably edged possession slightly but they lacked any penetration through us and instead tried to lure us into midfield and try and catch us short at the back – Dan in particular was doing a good job on their left winger who was their one threat early in the first half – but once we adjusted to their shape and were able to close down Mohktar Mohammadi their balls forward were of a much lesser quality. Myron was making his first start for the club after his massive cameo last week and he did well as part of a very solid back 3/5 partnership. Apart from that change this was the same starting team that dismantled Waiuku last weekend. Our breakthrough goal came from our midfield general Martin Pike who had been due a goal after a couple of “near” misses the previous week against ‘Ku – there was no danger of him missing this as he slammed home a volley from just inside the area after Ryan’s dangerous free kick was partially headed clear. That goal made an early claim for the moment of the match but it was usurped just before halftime by Isaac Brealey. His full field effort which began with a goal saving block on the line ended up with him dribbling past a centreback and goalkeeper before doubling the score with a simple tap in – Pikey having a great game provided the key assist pass to Isaac. At halftime things were pretty relaxed and key focus points were re-clarified – the rest of halftime was just spent tweaking some positional play and making sure we came and out played for a 3rd goal to kill the contest. Mangere did come out and play a lot better in the second half and looked better in possession but we also improved our defensive shape so for most of the game there was a stalemate – it wasn’t until super impact sub Jordan Oosterhof came on and made some great runs to unsettle their backline – his first run resulted in a ball clipped to the back post for Josh Anthony to net his 10th goal of the season, but Jordy was keen to make it two goals in two games after his late impact last week and his popped his own one in to great delight from the crowd. Mike Glenny then entered the game at left back in place of Myron and Tevin Smith replaced Seb Poelman who had moved into holding midfield – Tevin was making his First Team debut and it was great to see him out there – he almost capped his achievement off with a goal but unluckily slid his shot past the post. Mangere did manage a consolation goal late in the game – something for us to focus on at training – but we were happy with the 3 points and a spot in 3rd and a slightest of chances to pip Shore to the 2nd promotion spot – all we need to do it make sure we pick up our 6 points on offer and hope the rest of the games go our way. ASB CHATHAM CUP
Napier City Rovers’ bid for a fifth ASB Chatham Cup crown faces another away test after the semi-final draw for the 2015 club competition was made on Tuesday. Conducted by New Zealand football bloggers Jeremy Ruane and Enzo Giordani, the draw produced the fourth away trip in five cup ties this year for the Napier club as they will travel to first-time semi-finalists Birkenhead United over the weekend of August 29-30. Napier, 12-time semi-finalists in the storied competition, booked their place via Saturday’s 3-0 win over former champions Western Suburbs of Wellington as they continue to chase a league and national cup double after clinching the Central League title earlier this month. Birkenhead secured their first semi-final appearance with their own 3-0 win over a former champion – knocking out five-time winners Central United FC on Sunday.
The second semi-final is an all-Auckland affair which pits five-time ASB Chatham Cup winners Eastern Suburbs AFC – current leaders of the Northern Premier League – against Division 1 side Mangere United; also firsttime semi-finalists. Suburbs – who last lifted the trophy in 1969 – earned their semi-final place with a 2-1 victory at the expense of two-time defending champions Cash20
ASB CHATHAM CUP mere Technical of Christchurch. Mangere progressed via their 2-1 extra time result over 1999 competition champions Dunedin Technical. Eastern Suburbs and Mangere have met once before in the national knockout cup; Suburbs claiming a 3-0 win over the south Aucklanders in the third round in 2005. A total of 125 clubs and teams started the 88th edition of the knockout competition in April with the remaining four fighting for a place in the final scheduled for September 20.
