PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE It’s with mixed emotions that we welcome you to the Ave today – it’s the last program for the 2016 season and while some of us are looking forward to a small break before the 2017 season prep starts others are gearing up for National League and our U19’s Napier Tournament. The focus today (quite rightfully) is on the visit of North Shore and ex Ellerslie skipper Ed Sillars to Michaels Ave – Shore as you read in the program are still in the hunt for promotion and will want to pick up points here tonight, our challenge is to keep working on improving in what has turned out to be a season of lessons and learning opportunity’s – it’s cliché but this game isn’t the last home game it’s our first pre-season game of 2017 – that’s the focus! For the Reserves they have a really good chance at clinching the league but they need 3 points here to keep the pressure on the rest of the pack – I’m sure the Shore Reserves won’t want to hand over any easy points and we will see a real scrap – best of luck to all four teams! A couple of club announcements – firstly a massive goodbye and thank you to Jason Oliver who finishes up with the Women’s First Team at the end of this season, Jason has worked tirelessly on the women’s side of the club since joining and he will be missed – certainly big shoes to fill, but like any great coach he leaves us in much better shape than when he started! Enjoy your free time Jason!
Achievements – We have a number of teams who have put some great performances in this season, special mention to the Conference Reserves in the first year of their existence, they finished 2 nd just behind a rampant Eastern Suburbs side – great effort! AFF Champs also in the first year in that league are on track to win the league and are still in the Northern Knockout Cup, so best of luck to Glen and his team. Dave Witteveen and his 040’s side look to have wrapped up their league for the umpteenth time – these guys enjoy winning as much as they did in NRFL – true competitiors! Div 4 Diamonds also have wrapped up their league, congrats to Rob Kidd and his players. A number of other teams have had great seasons and some are still in the running for honours so keep an eye on our facebook page for updates. In other news it looks like the clubrooms renovations will be completed this weekend and we will be back open for Club Thursday next week, also the council have opened some more of the lower fields which is great news (maybe a little late in the season….) To keep updated on all things Ellerslie download our official club app by searching Ellerslie AFC in your app store. Cheers Tim Adams Chairman – Senior Division

CLUB/COMMUNITY EVENTS and NEWS NGAHUE RESERVE Unfortunately there has been no progress with getting access to Ngahue Reserve - this continues to be discussed between the council and OFC (we have been told to step out of the discussions by council) so we are unable to give any realistic update on when this might become available to club members. CLUB APP After a couple of months of work with the developers we have managed to get our new club available for members. Some of the key features for members are direct links to the AFF fixtures portal as well as push messaging from the club over several different subscription levels. It would be great if you could download the app now and give it a whirl – search your app store for Ellerslie AFC or jump on our website (www.ellersliefootball.org.nz) and click on the appropriate link for your phone. CLUBROOMS RENOVATIONS From next week the clubrooms will be closed for about 4 weeks as the council work on updating the look from 1970’s to a more modern and clean look – this will mean new carpet, new light fittings and a complete remodel in the bathrooms and the kitchen. While it’s inconvenient to have the clubrooms closed we look forward to reopening with our new clubrooms and kitchen alongside our new bar fridge and beer taps that were recently installed – exciting times! UPDATE - The Clubrooms look on track to be back open next week Thursday!
Food will be available on match days from the canteen run by the 15 th Grade players and parents and we are investigating on running food and soft drinks out of the canteen on Thursdays as well for after training. EDITORS COMMENTS ASB Premiership (is it still called that?) So this upcoming national league season see’s our Neighbours Eastern Suburbs re-join the national league after last playing in the 1971 season. For Ellerslie what does this mean? East Auckland FC – for those with decent memories you will remember our last East Auckland national league representative, hosted at Bill McKinley Park and driven mostly by Mt Wellington (now Uni-Mt Wellington) – this Franchise also included Ellerslie, Eastern Suburbs, Bucklands Beach and Fencibles. Eastern Suburbs won’t be changing their name and I for one like that, they are a big club and they have lots of fans already so for me it’s better to build on that than create some kind of sister franchise. So even though it’s going to be called Eastern Suburbs, the people behind the team are really keen to grab the attention of all the clubs in the east and bring quality football and entertainment to the locals. With that in mind the Eastern Suburbs National Youth League team will only be selecting players from schools and clubs within the East Auckland area (or schools whose catchment area falls into the East Auckland area) – this means we have a direct pathway to National Youth League football for the first time since we were involved in Auckland Manukau United. This is massive for players in our area who no longer have to leave Ellerslie AFC to play for Auckland City Youth or Waitakere Youth. Ellerslie are in the process of nominating our crème de la crème to Suburbs for trials – and hopefully by the time the season kicks off we have a number of proud Ellerslie lads playing national league on our doorstep. So long term Ellerslie’s goal of being in Premier League can only be helped by having a national league representative in our area.
I encourage you all to come on down to Bill McKinlay Park and take in some local national league for the first time since East Auckland FC – and wherever the youth team play (Michaels Ave/William Green) get down and watch those stars of the future.

AROUND THE LEAGUES NRFL Premier League Because of the eligibility scandal last year the Premier League ended up a 13 team league – which means that we lose three teams to relegation this season – fate should dictate that Three Kings should be one of those three but you will see they are in the hunt at the other end of the table Title Chasers: It’s between Central and Three Kings, Central have the marginal advantage of points on the board (43 vs 39) but Three Kings have 3 games in hand. Suburbs and Birkenhead have mathematical chances on 35 (played 19) and 34 (played 18) points respectively. Relegation Battle: Melville, Tauranga and Western Springs all sit at the bottom on 15 points – however Springs do hold two games in hand. Hamilton Wanderers and Bay Olympic are the other teams in trouble on 19 and 18 points respectively from 20 games each. Effectively Melville with a minus 37 goal difference need to win all of their remaining games NRFL Division One As covered in our preview this weekend will go a long way to decide who goes up with Waitakere and who drops into NRFL Div 2 – check that out on page XX for more detailed information. Title Chasers: Waitakere have this sealed with a 6-0 win over Hibiscus last week Promotion Chasers: Champions Waitakere have one spot sealed while MAP, Manurewa and North Shore battle it out for the last ticket to Premier League
NRFL Division Two A pretty tight battle at the top of Div 2 means no-one has mathematically clinched promotion yet, while at the bottom of the table Northland FC could only be saved possibly by Fury’s withdrawal from the league during the season. Title Chasers: Manukau City look odds on for the title with 39 points from 17 games – but Waitemata sit right on their tails only 3 points back from the same amount of games. Takapuna look to be out of the title chase with a game extra played and 4 less points that Manukau. Promotion Chasers: Assuming Manukau take one spot (and could do so this weekend) it’s really only Waitemata and Takapuna battling it out for 2 nd place – Onehunga Mangere sit in 4th some 6 points behind Takapuna having played 18 games. Relegation Battle: Northland need a miracle with only three points all season from 3 draws – I know in the regulations the bottom team is gone burgers (no playoff) but since AFC Fury pulled out earlier in the season I don’t know if Northland will get a second chance o r if they stay in NRFL football is doomed. They do have 3 games left to pick up 9 points and get above Claudelands if they don’t pick up anymore points from their remaining games but that seems a tough ask for the Northland side – bottom spot to be sealed this week possibly.

CHATHAM CUP The semi-finals of the Chatham Cup will both be held in Auckland after two teams from the City of Sails were drawn to play at home in the final four of New Zealand’s oldest and most prestigious winter club competition. The official draw for the semi-finals was held today at New Zealand Football headquarters and resulted in Birkenhead United hosting Miramar Rangers and Waitakere City doing likewise against Three Kings United. It means each semi-final will be staged by a club from the Northern Football Federation with Waitakere welcoming Three Kings to their Fred Taylor Park home in Whenuapai and Wellington’s Miramar hitting the road yet again to meet Birkenhead at Shepherds Park on the North Shore. The draw continues to be unkind to Miramar, who have performed admirably to make it this far without once enjoying the benefit of home advantage. The capital men have also proven they can foot it with the best in the country after beating a top-flight team in each round. All of the semi-finalists will go into the make-or-break ties in good form after each finding the net multiple times in their quarter-final victories last weekend. Three Kings went on the goal rampage against cup bolters North Wellington, pulling off a 6-1 win thanks largely to a hat-trick from former All White Allan Pearce and a Cameron Philpot double. Birkenhead also had a brace-scorer in their 3-0 triumph over neighbours Forrest Hill-Milford United with Jack Salter on target twice late on. And there were plenty of goals elsewhere as Waitakere defeated Dunedin’s Caversham 3-1 at home and Miramar disposed of Cashmere Technical 4-2 in Christchurch. None of this year’s semi-finalists are strangers to the latter stages of the competition.
Of the four, Three Kings and Birkenhead are yet to lift the trophy but the former finished runners-up in 2009 while this is a second consecutive semi-final appearance for Birkenhead. Miramar have a strong history of success having won the cup twice in recent years – in 2004 and 2010 – and boasting four titles in total. Waitakere are also one of the Chatham Cup’s glamour sides and enjoyed a golden run in the mid-nineties with a trio of successive triumphs from 1994. They have established a reputation as bridesmaid since then however, making the final but ending up on the losing end in 1999, 2004 and 2013. Player-coach Jake Butler was a member of the team three years ago and got on the scoresheet in that final but wasn’t able to prevent a 3-1 loss to Cashmere Technical. The semi-finals of this year’s edition of the cup with be held on the weekend of August 27 to 28 with the match details to be confirmed later this week. Chatham Cup Semi-Final Fixtures August 27-28 Birkenhead United vs Miramar Rangers Waitakere City vs Three Kings United

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW Well we have 1 end of season spot confirmed with Waitakere confirmed as Champions and as a Premier League team in 2017 – congrats to Jake and his team and of course his treble of ex Ellerslie players, Dylan, Harry and Jamie – well deserved. So the questions are who else is going up and then who is going down…. Find out what we think below: Mt Albert Ponsonby vs Manurewa 3pm @ Anderson Depending if you’re more interested in the excitement of promotion or the drama of relegation, this might just be the game of the season, the winner basically etches their name into the draw for the 2017 NRFL Premier League season. Both teams have had breakout seasons after dabbling with relegation last season (sound familiar?). MAP have passed up two previous opportunities in the past two weeks to clinch promotion while Manurewa have been drafting in behind the top couple of teams quietly accumulating points. MAP still with the slight upper hand with two points over Rewa with 2 games to play. TIP: MAP at home to sneak it and clinch a fairy-tale promotion Franklin United vs Mangere United 3pm @ Bledisloe Swamp If the promotion decider above doesn’t grip you then this will – a Franklin United win will bar the shouting consign Mangere to NRFL Div 2 in 2017 with only 11 points so far this season. Two weeks ago Franklin also sat on 11 points but after two gritty wins against Ellerslie and MAP they have kicked the relegation battle back into life, Papakura and Hibiscus the other two teams at risk now. TIP: Franklin who field a number of ex-Mangere players to continue their battling form – Mangere don’t seem to have the same fight dispite having a talented lineup. Waitakere City vs Oratia United 3pm @ The Fred Probably a chance for Waitakere to play a few squaddies as they focus on their massive Chatham Cup SemiFinal against Three Kings – they won’t want to give up their unbeaten record though so don’t be surprised to see a few First Team stars playing. Oratia are almost clear of the relegation scrap but won’t want to take any risks so expect them to come out looking for points TIP: Tia to grab a vital point in a 0-0 draw – best result for both sides! Hibiscus Coast vs Papakura City 3pm @ Stanmore Bay Relegation battle 2.0 – Just as it’s a shock that Manurewa and MAP are (rightfully) contesting promotion it’s just as much of a shock to see Coast in relegation bother – the loss of points early in the season really dented their confidence, which is a shame. Papakura equally started off the season well but have just bombed since then and really are only still in a shout of escaping due to Mangere’s point indiscretion TIP: Coast were humiliated last time out by Waitakere, but they will bounce back at home and make sure they are not in the relegation scrap next week. Ellerslie AFC vs North Shore United 5pm @ The Ave North Shore are still in the promotion race but they need a win against Ellerslie and either Manurewa to beat MAP or a draw – a MAP win knocks them out of contention. Due to the later kickoff this game could have everything riding on it for Shore or be a dead rubber – either way Ellerslie will have their own focus on finishing the year off the right way. TIP: Hard to pick due to the permutations involved from possible results earlier in the day – should be a good game though! Metro FC - BYE

MATCH REPORT Battle of Bledisloe – Franklin grab crucial win in NRFL Div 1 Action So with the Hamilton part of my trip complete I rushed to the car to see if I could get from Porritt Stadium to Bledisloe Park in an hour to catch the 3pm kickoff – I had pre-planned my trip and had the fastest route all sorted, but what tripped me up was the Auckland style traffic jam leading onto Te Rapa straight. Honestly if Hamilton’s traffic is going to be as bad as Auckland’s then the list of things to attract people to Hamilton is getting ever shorter. Why you would live in Hamilton: No Traffic Affordable house prices (for now) The Chiefs (no-one likes the blues) You own a roundabout construction company (there are literally thousands) There are no Aucklanders Funnily enough the reason for this delay wasn’t one of Hamilton’s fabled roundabouts it was a set of faulty lights – or maybe they were not faulty but operating as designed (badly) – sitting on Wairere Road trying to turn into Te Rapa road the light was giving a generous 6 to 7 seconds of green as opposed to the good 5 to 6 mins of waiting while green shone the other ways. Anyway having spent half of my allowed travel time trying to exit Hamilton I made excellent (and legal) progress throughout the rest of my journey, infact I arrived at Bledisloe Park exactly in the 24th minute of the game. I know this because from where I parked I could see Jason celebrating a goal. It turns out if I can rewind 24 minutes that we lined up as so: Mann, Basha, Horgan, Ritchie, Poelman, Pike ©, Waters, Oosterhof, Barkley, Scott, Twigg Franklin who I had seen the previous week at McLennan Park lined up different to how they had that night as they started the dangerous Salesh Kumar upfront, he was supported by Luke Chapman, Lance Kraakman and Noa Vukica. For us Mike Ritchie came back into the side after being out from injury for about a season and Matt Sargent took his place on the bench for the first time this season – apart from that it was a pretty settled side. Franklin started well and had the ball in the goal from Noa after just 17 minutes – but Martin Pike was our goalscorer in that 24th minute as he fizzed home a left foot strike to equalise the game – from that point we looked like we dominated the
28
game as we failed to convert a few chances, but Art wasn’t to be denied as he rose and guided a ball home via his head to give us the lead and him his debut first team goal on 42 minutes. That was the scoreline as we entered halftime – the main focus during the break was on the pitch and the Franklin attack, in regards to the pitch we all reminded ourselves this wasn’t Michaels Ave and we needed to adjust our games slightly – a message I think we took onboard, but maybe not as well as the home team. The second half we continued to press Franklin and how we didn’t increase our lead is beyond me – but Franklin never gave up and they punished us on the 60 th minute mark with an equaliser, from there while we continued to create opportunities we had an air of frantic about us and our give away rate of the ball shot up as the game became very scrappy – We introduced Christian at the back and Alex came on upfront as we tried to gain control of the game – but I think the players were probably already in quicksand. Quicksand is a mental state where nothing you try on a sports field works, it starts with basic errors and then slowly you try more and more extravagant and outrageous things to “pull yourself” back into the game – but often it has the opposite effect and your game just falls to pieces. Now I don’t think we had a serious case of quicksand, but I think it was definitely a factor in our last 20-25 mins of the game. Franklin went through a period where they seemed ok with the draw but in the last 5 minutes they kicked back into life and went hunting for the winner, and credit to them they grabbed it and they strangled the life out of it – that’s how much the points meant to them! Franklin’s young star Lance Kraakman with an 86 th minute winner, something him and his teammates won’t forget for a while. Hopefully we don’t forget it either as it’s not a feeling we want to have too often, and there were certainly a few things we could have done to avoid the situation we found ourselves in. All in all I don’t think we played badly – maybe just not that effectively. It’s easy to look at the chances we spurned or the chances we conceded to see what we could have done better but there were a whole bunch of other 1%er’s that we need to improve on if we want to finish the season as high as we can in the league. Man of the Match for Elite Lawn and Garden Services Ellerslie was Sohail Basha – a solid game and excellent tactical understanding of the change between a back 4 and a back 3 throughout the game.
