PROUDLY PRESENTS

“THE AVE”

WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome all players, coaches, supporters and club members to Michaels Ave for Queen’s Birthday Weekend – we hope you all enjoy your weekend of football and we hope to see you up in our clubrooms after your game. Today’s main game see’s Ellerslie take on local rivals Onehunga Sports from just over the Southern motorway, with the suburb of Penrose lying between the two clubs namesake areas. Brian and Mal always have a strong and organised team and they will bring this to Michaels Ave tonight as they look to keep pace with the top four after a pretty good first half of the season. In our previous encounter this season the Sports team showed all of the above characteristics as they lost a player early but held on with 10 men to run out 2-0 winners. Warren and his lads tonight will want to build on what I am calling the best result I have seen for a long time with their brave cup win last week over holders Central Utd - that result should bring some extra belief and bounce back to the team and the boys know we need to bring it to this game as we need the 3 points. The reserves lead by Chris and Marshy look to continue on developing in a season where they have gone from strength to strength and this second half of the season is just another chance to keep improving. Finally the club welcomes everyone back to Michaels Ave next weekend on Sunday to enjoy some Chatham Cup action as the first team take on Waitakere City at 2:30pm - the curtain raiser is the reserves cup game against Ngaruawahaia.

Ok well we hope you enjoy tonights games and please join us for a drink or some hot food in the club rooms at halftime or after the game.

Regards ELLERSLIE AFC

PRESIDENTS REPORT It is my pleasure, on behalf of the Ellerslie Football Club, to extend a warm welcome to our visitors from our fellow NRFL Premier and Reserve Club teams, together with our own Club members and supporters, to our recently completed new facilities at Michaels Avenue Reserve. We trust that you will all enjoy the benefits associated with the completion of Stage 1 of our Reserve’s Redevelopment Plan, and look forward in anticipation to further facilities improvements over the next year or so.

A lot of publicity has surrounded Auckland Council’s recent commitment to embark upon a 10 year plan to significantly upgrade field capacities across Auckland, with a prime initiative being the installation of more artificial surfaces. As a Club that has been at the forefront of this , the opportunities that such surfaces present to coaches, players and supporters was brought into stark focus recently when within a number of hours of a typical Auckland tropical downpour, our members were able to continue their training and playing regimes uninterrupted, whilst other Clubs wrestled with the logistics of ground closures etc. The positivity that is now palpable around all aspects of this Club is fantastic to see and feel. The challenge for all of us is how to gain the best value and outcomes for our members from the significant investment both made, and still to be made, in the improvement of our facilities. But ultimately, facilities are only one aspect of this Club’s Strategic Plan and we all have a role to play in identifying ways and means by which our players, coaches and supporters can come together to make this Club, the Club of choice in our region. So, come and get involved. Best wishes to Warren Parke, Chris Wallace, their support staff and players in both the Premiers and Reserves, as they continue on their respective journeys tonight.

Kind regards Mark B. Weipers President

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT Old foes Birkenhead faced us on the carpet at Michaels Ave last Saturday night and to their credit complimented us on the initiative of an evening kick off when others before have criticised. There is a lot to admire with Birko, they are youthful, play at pace and move the ball very well and these are all attributes we ourselves endeavour to develop. So with two teams operating on the same page an enjoyable evening was in front of us. Both teams set a very good tempo and the game travelled up and down the pitch showcasing some fine passages of football. We were kept in the game with some impressive goalkeeping from Sean Dowling early on. Opportunities were had by both teams in the first half but no goals separated the two as we headed to the sheds for a chance to reflect and touch on areas we could improve on. The 10 minutes up to the break had Birko in obvious distress as they began to argue with each other, and the officials, as we had clearly unsettled there passing game and were troubling them with our own movement. The second half started well for us as our defensive unit held strong on the back of big efforts from Callum Brown and Ahmed Al-Jawad who were being worked hard on the flanks defensively and then adding width to our efforts going forward. Mike Ritchie again was excellent in the CB role beside the combative Jamie Olausen back in the side after his short suspension. As the match seemed well balanced and no team with an edge, Birko squeezed a ball through our last line of defence and they scored a well worked goal to take the lead. It was disappointing as we had looked in good shape for much of the game and now had to play catch up football. Our midfield were tireless and outworked Birken head in the middle of the park at times with Eddie Sillars and Scotty Wallace moving the ball quickly and accurately. Man of the match Dylan Manickum was asking questions of the Birko defence frequent ly with his tight movement with the ball and we were creating chances regularly. Warwick Hart was replaced with Alex Witteveen with 20 minutes to go and Alex put himself about exactly as asked and gave the Birkenhead CBs more of what Warwick had. Some decisions went against us in this period that could have given us

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT something out of the match, firstly Will Roper had to leave the field having to reconnect his nose to his head after a flying elbow went undetected as he ran on to a tidy through ball and his progress was abruptly halted. Then Isaac Brealey was not given anything for being dumped in the penalty area while on the ball in a tackle that appeared to get all ankle. All this action was great for the neutral however and while we came out of the game with no points I was happy enough with the performance and know that with belief and more performances like this one we are going to enjoy the second half of the season. The match finished with Birkenhead edging us by the odd goal and handshakes all around as both sets of players have formed a mutual respect for one another over the past few seasons. We face them in our last league game and look forward to another crack at them. As an aside we won our Chatham cup match on the Monday to advance to the next round having humbled Central at home with a very good performance and a MOM award to Eddie Sillars. I would like to offer the reserves a well done after their 101 cup win over North Force and to the enthusiasm Chris Wallace has brought to the coaching role alongside the much respected Grant (Marshy) Marshall. While I am at it thanks should also go to Tim Adams and James McCarthy for the extra efforts made on the double header weekend. Yellow Yellow.....yeah right

CHATHAM CUP ROUNDUP Central United’s ASB Chatham Cup defence faltered at the first hurdle, with the 2012 champions the biggest casualty on a day of high second round drama on Monday. Seeded into the second round but landing a testing tie against fellow Lotto NRFL club Ellerslie AFC, the five time Chatham Cup winners exited in humble fashion with an own goal eventually being the difference between the two sides in the 2-1 defeat. All three goals came in a six-minute span mid-way through the first half as Will Roper opened the scoring for the home team after 22 minutes. Milos Nikolic replied four minutes later only for the Central United own goal two minutes later proving the final scoring action as Ellerslie completed the upset win. The drama continued across town as Papatoetoe AFC and Westlake Boys High School served up an enthralling encounter in South Auckland with the home team hauling back a three goal deficit after a horror start to force extra time against the students. A goal apiece took the match to penalties, with Papatoetoe’s goalkeeper Jason Mann the hero to guide his side to a 4-3 win on spot kicks. Neil Emblen’s Lotto NRFL Men’s Division 2-leading Western Springs AFC side were dumped out in extra-time at Onehunga Mangere United AFC. Having won 5-1 at the same venue the week before in the league competition, the visitors fell to Rob Winfield’s 115th minute winner at the Mangere Domain as the home side’s goalkeeper Glen Pascoe turned in a sparkling performance. In Manurewa, the home side survived a massive scare as the Lotto NRFL Men’s Premier League outfit climbed out of an 0-2 hole at Memorial Park, taking a 6-2 extra time win over Tauranga Old Blues – current leaders in the Waikato Bay of Plenty Federation 1 competition. Goals to Hicham Kamri and Brad Rathbun got the home side to extra time and the South Aucklanders finished over the top of the visitors as Justin Horan’s brace combined with goals to Futsal Whites skipper Marvin Eakins and Jason Beeston completed the recovery act. Mangere United also turned the formbook on its head with the Lotto NRFL second division outfit ousting first division Forrest Hill Milford 2-1 on Auckland’s North Shore as Aaron Bawdekar’s extra time goal separated the two sides at Becroft Park.

Lotto NRFL Men’s’ Division 2 side Fencibles United AFC also turned over higher level opposition, Grant Robertson’s side taking a 3-0 win over Kevin Fallon’s Division 1 Eastern Suburbs AFC side. First half goals to Alex Ogidi and Paulo Montino helped the visitors on their way at Madills Farm and Robbie Robinson’s second half strike sealed the outcome. Both teams finished the match men down, Suburbs having two sent off while Fencibles had Ricky Lines dismissed with 20 minutes to go. Lotto NRFL Men’s Premier League sides Bay Olympic and Three Kings United avoided cup banana skins with respective wins over lower level opposition; the west Auckland side claiming a 4-0 win at Papakura City FC while Three Kings turned away Waikato Bay of Plenty Federation League 1 team Taupo AFC 3-0 at Keith Hay Park. Onehunga Sports’ 4-1 (Lotto NRFL Men’s Premier League) victory over AFF/NFF Conference leaders Waitemata AFC rounded out the Auckland Football club involvement in the second round. The third round draw completed on Tuesday has thrown up three all-Lotto NRFL Men’s Premier League ties as Bay Olympic host league-leaders East Coast Bays, Manurewa AFC entertain Three Kings United and Ellerslie AFC host Waitakere City FC.

Division 2 Fencibles United AFC will aim to take down Premier League side Onehunga Sports while Mangere United will have similar hopes against Premier League side Hamilton Wanderers. Onehunga Mangere United AFC will host Ngaruawahia United AFC at the Mangere Domain while Papatoetoe AFC face a trip to Melville United’s Gower Park in the other. Full third round draw details are on the next page

RESERVES REPORT Reserves Match Report Sat June 1st and Mon June 3rd. Coming into Queens Birthday weekend we had two home games; Birkenhead on Saturday in the League and North Force on Monday in the Knockout Cup. In second place on the League ladder we were keen to maintain our winning momentum against Birkenhead and keep the pressure on Hamilton Wanderers who were in 1st place one point ahead of us.

As usual against Birkenhead we were put under pressure both physically and verbally right from the first whistle and while happy that we were up 1 nil at the break we were also a little disappointed to have squandered a number of good goal scoring opportunities. This was to come back and “bite us as Birkenhead, who must have got a racking at half-time, came out firing putting two goals away in the first 5 minutes and were unlucky a short time later not have a 3rd. This 5 minutes was to be our undoing and although once we had woken up and got back into the game we were the better team we could not convert any more opportunities and finished the game with our second loss of the season 1-2. Man of the match went to Adam Scott. Luckily for us Central won which moved them into first place on 21 points, 1 point ahead of Hamilton Wanderers who had their first loss of the season and so remained on 20 points, 1 point ahead of us on 19 points in 3rd place. While unhappy with a loss to end the first round I am very happy and proud of our overall performance and the development of all team members. Moving to Monday and our first game in the Premier Reserves Knockout Cup saw us pitted against a very young North Force team who had made the long journey south to Michaels Ave unaware that they were playing on the new turf. After lending a couple of their players boots suitable for the turf we got under way and very quickly took control of the game scoring 5 goals in each half to finish 10-0. Goal scorers were Jordan Oosterhof with 4, Adam Scott with 3, Freddie Ljungberg, Callum Waters and Lewis Parke with 1 each. Again I am very proud that the boys approached and played this game professionally maintaining excellent shape, structure and pace throughout and did not lower any of our standards as can often happen when playing teams perceived to be weaker than you. While Man of the Match could have gone to a number of players Michael Glenny won

We look forward to a good contest and hope we can entertain with some great football. All the best to Warren and the 1st team boys, lets kick on from Mondays success and bring home the 3 points!

Best Regards Chris Wallace.

A strong run by the AFF Green team as they would be the 5th graded team in that age group, something the players in that team were extremely proud of. For the 9th Grade, the game was back and forth between the St. Michael’s Wolves and 9th AFF Red. At any moment of the game it seemed as though the other was about to take control. In a game of fantastic football that spanned a couple of extra time minutes, the game was officially declared a draw and both teams crowned champions of the 9th Grade. It was absolutely fantastic to run the tournament right here on the turf field and the players were ecstatic throughout the day and left the field depleted of all energy. It was great to watch all the brilliant skills that were on display throughout the day and we really look forward to our 6 th, 7th, and 8th Grade tournament that is kicking off on June 30th. Thanks to all that attended and it was a great day! Cheers Ryan Shiffman Junior Director of Coaching

PREMIER CLUB RANKINGS Week ending 4th June With many teams involved in two games over the long weekend there’s been plenty of movement in the Rankings. There’s no change at the very top although Wellington Olympic were finally beaten in the CPL by Wairarapa Utd; the Greeks bounced back in the Chatham Cup with a win over Petone. Up six places into #2 are Ferrymead Bays thanks to two good away wins, firstly over Coastal Spirit in the MPL and then against Western in the Cup. And spots #3 to #5 are occupied by other sides that also managed two from two: holding onto #3 are Roslyn Wakari although they needed extra time to defeat Queen’s Park in the Cup; up two places to #4 are East Coast Bays – their 4-1 NRPL win over Three Kings Utd caught the eye; and also up two places to #5 are Birkenhead Utd, even though they were made to work hard in the Cup by Cambridge Utd. Outside the top five there was plenty to talk about, particularly in the Chatham Cup. 2012 winners Central Utd were bundled out by Ellerslie AFC. And 2010 winners Miramar Rangers are gone as well, ousted 21 by the 2011 winners, a resurgent Wairarapa Utd. Wairarapa Utd must now be among the favourites for the 2013 title, along with 2012 semifinalists Lower Hutt City and Caversham AFC, and 2008 winners East Coast Bays. The big Rankings movers this week are Western (down nine), Otago University (down six), and Waitakere City (up six). Upcoming games to look our for this weekend are the top of the table clash between Miramar Rangers and Wellington Olympic in the CPL, Cashmere Technical and Ferrymead Bays in the MPL and Caversham AFC versus Green Island in the FSPL.
