PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE It’s back to normal business now that the hustle and bustle of Queen’s Birthday and cup football is pushed to one side to focus on league action – that’s not to say that we don’t have some mouth-watering fixtures in store for us this weekend – because we do! Our two main fixtures focus on our Men’s and Women’s First Teams as they each face different challenges, our Men’s team have completed the first round of league action and this weekend play host to Oratia United who took the win in the first round in a 7 goal, 1 red card thriller. So welcome to Steve Cain and Steve Withers and their team to Michaels Ave for today’s rematch. For Jason’s Women’s Team they travel south on Sunday to take on Papakura in a match would could go some way to deciding the makeup of the top 3 or 4 teams in the Women’s Conference this year, Fencibles and Metro the other teams in the mix. Both games will be proceeded by reserves games with both of these teams having good seasons so far – Ben Fletchers Men’s Reserves sit in 1st equal in the league and will want to get maximum points in this game to keep pressure on MAP – Nicola Demaine’s Women’s Reserves in their maiden season sit in the top three and face a tough opponent in Papakura who also sit in that top three bracket – both teams trying to chase down Eastern Suburbs. Good luck to all of our teams in their games today! Up in the clubrooms we have a couple of new staff members, Faith joins us for Thursday and Saturday shifts while NRFL Squad members Callum and Connor are on board for Fridays and Sundays respectively – so please make them feel welcome next time you’re up in the club! Speaking of the club we are open this weekend for all games and we will be screening the All Blacks vs Wales game on the big screen after the All Whites Nations Cup final has concluded for those who are interested! Some interesting results as 6 of our AFF Men’s open teams and 2 of our AFF Women’s open teams made it through the first round of their respective cups - unfortunately at the national level both our Men’s and Women’s first team lost their ties by 1 goal and were knocked out. Biggest cup win of the weekend goes to AFF Div 1 side Boylan who beat a side just 1 division below them by 4 goals to 1- while some of our other teams suffered some big losses, but that’s cup football. We look forward to the next round as Boylan, Champs, Diamonds, Deceptively Slow, Shicksy and Shotaholics will be drawn in round 2 of the Northern Knockout Cup while Nomads and Conference Reserves will make it to the 2nd round of the AFF Women’s Knockout cup where hopefully our Women’s First Team will join them if they can get past Metro Reserves in their postponed fixture. If one of those teams has photo’s and/or a story to tell about their game we are keen to hear it - email us on chairman@ellersliefootball.org.nz

NZ WOMEN’S KNOCKOUT CUP (Report by Jeremy Ruane) It's been quite some considerable time since Ellerslie and Lynn-Avon United battled for the honour of claiming the National Women's Knockout Cup in three successive finals early this century. In 2001, 2002 and 2003, these clubs were, quite literally, the best in the land, and the symbol of national supremacy in women's club football went to one or t'other, with very little between them, particularly in the first two years. Fast forward fifteen or so years to June 5, 2016, and a Michaels Avenue encounter between these two former cup holders, both of whom have fallen on hard times since those heady days of women's footballing glory. Ellerslie now find themselves midst the mid-table congestion in the Northern Region Conference competition, while Lynn-Avon are propping up the Premier League, with just a solitary point to their name after nine rounds, and in real danger of relegation and an end to their 24-year top-flight tenure. So this tie was a potential banana skin for the club which has won the National Women's Knockout Cup more times - nine - than any other. Or it was a chance for United to discover the joy of victory for the first time this season. As things panned out, it was the latter statement which prevailed, Lynn-Avon edging Ellerslie 1-0 in a match which could have gone the way of the home team, particularly late in the piece when they were pursuing an equaliser. The game began quietly, an early injury to Jemima Ferrier giving United cause for concern before she opted to put team before self and play through the pain for the cause, a decision which would soon reap its rewards. But not before both goalkeepers had been tested. Tessa Nicol was the first to be called upon, United's thrice-capped Junior Ferns custodian saving at the feet of Sophie Sills in the fourteenth minute, after the lively Tove Bennett had worked a one-two with Chrissy Liversedge before looking to pick out the striker with a low cross. After Dakota Boyes had lashed a wild shot over the bar, Nicol ignited United's best response to date in the 27th minute, sparking a move which saw Olivia Evans, Victoria Murray and striker - for now - Maia Jackman uniting down the right. The former Football Fern's cross was destined for the head of Georgia Webster before Alex Vernon intervened at her near post. Three minutes later, Vernon stood not a prayer as Lynn-Avon took the lead. The visitors streamed down the left this time, Olivia Mahar, Dakota Boyes and Webster combining before the last-mentioned slipped a pass into the stride of Ferrier, whose fulminating drive flashed past Verdon before crashing into the net behind her. It was just the second goal United had scored this season, and Ferrier was the markswoman on the previous occasion. Her goal this time gave Ellerslie something to think about. But for a timely tackle by the well-performed Deborah Tutty eight minutes before the interval, the combination of Webster and Jackman may well have given them more food for thought. As it was, the home team came charging back into the contest, Bennett presenting Kezia Kelly with a chance seconds later which saw her effort deflected away from the target by the retreating figure of Evans. Some defensive hesitancy went unpunished three minutes before half-time, with former United midfielder Caitlin Janes spurning the chance to equalise by shooting straight at Nicol, while a Carina Ewens corner soon after beat all bar Tutty, who directed her header wide of the far post. In first half stoppage time, Jackman went decidedly close to meeting a cross from the impressive Nechita Inwood with a spectacular diving header at the near post, while from the resulting corner, the former Ellerslie star headed Webster's deep corner back across goal to Murray, who steered the last kick of the half wide of the target. The second spell was just two minutes old when a stray Georgia Martin pass was pounced on by Liversedge, who instantly sent S ills storming through the middle past Jaedici Uluvili. Sadly for the home team, she shot straight at Nicol when the change to equalise couldn't have been better. Back came the visitors, Inwood playing in Uluvili, who slipped past an opponent before opting to shoot when a pass to her lef t would have put Jackman in on goal with just Vernon to beat, something Boyes attempted to do in vain from thirty yards on the hour. United certainly weren't immune to rotating their players around the park, with Martin moving forward into a midfield role as Jackman dropped back into defence as Brooke Hawker was introduced to the fray soon after Boyes' last contribution to the contest. United's captain was quick to make her mark in her midfield role, Martin playing the ball forward for Webster to pursue. Frances Vujcich was favourite to prevail, but upon doing so, instantly turned into trouble - Webster was right on top of her, and wasted little time dispossessing the defender before drilling a snapshot past the post. Two minutes later, Ferrier loomed large on the left, from where she pounced on an error to leave Vernon out of position and t he bulk of the goal to fire into. Just as she shaped to strike, however, the timely tackle of Louise Cairns prevented the goalscorer from doubling her tally and putting the tie out of Ellerslie's reach. There remained just the one goal in the tie, however, and while that was the case, the home team were in this right up to their eyeballs and then some! And over the course of the last twenty minutes, they piled on the pressure in a desperate search for an equaliser. Sixteen minutes from time came the game's most controversial incident, and Jackman knows full well that she is due a visit to her local Lotto outlet this week, because her luck is well in on this evidence. It's not often this ever-willing campaigner has been beaten for speed in her career, but Sills had the edge on Jackman on this occasion, as the pair pursued Liversedge's through ball. The last defender's hands were all over the back of Sills as the striker continued to hold the edge, Jackman coming desperately close to hauling her opponent back in what was a clear goalscoring opportunity, given Nicol was all that stood between Sills and the goal. Had the striker gone down, Jackman would surely have been the recipient of a red card from referee Fidel Jarry. But to Sills' credit, she stayed on her feet, eventually unleashing a rising twenty yard drive which Nicol tipped to safety. Encouraged, Ellerslie kept on coming, and twice in the last four minutes they carved out openings from which they could very easily have drawn level. Liversedge burst between two opponents in the 86th minute before picking out the speedy Anna Howden on the left. She picked out Sills with a cross which the striker laid back into the stride of Janes, whose twenty-five yarder was always rising. And in the final minute, another surge from Liversedge saw her charging through on goal, only for Nicol to plunge to her right and produce a fine save to thwart her twenty yard strike, a denial which determined the fate of both teams in their pursuit of cup glory in 2016. LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW Preview time - and coming off the back of 3 correct results picked from last round we have a bit of form heading into this weeks round - so here goes some picks for the first games of the second round: North Shore vs Metro FC Allen Hill @ 3pm In the opening game of the season Metro dealt Shore a narrow defeat - but the Devonport based side are now sitting in 2nd place (albeit on GD) while Metro only sit narrowly behind them by 1 point but 3 ladder places. Both sides have simular goal records with Rizal Ganeif and Dave Fahy leading their respective lines. TIP: North Shore to sneak it with home advantage being the difference Mangere vs Mt Albert Ponsonby Centre Park @ 3pm Based on the league table this should be a no contest - called off at the end of the 7th innings due to the mercy rule. However prior to their points deduction Mangere were competing well and looked like a solid mid table team. The test will be how they bounce back from their administration error and compete on the park. MAP are flying high after a slow start, while not the most free scoring of sides they have an excellent defensive record TIP: MAP just in red hot form at the moment, 2-0 win for the away side. Waitakere City vs Papakura City The Fred @ 3pm The battle of the city's as runaway leaders Waitak face off against bottom half of the table Kura - Will Waitak's run continue or has the big win over Glenfield in the cup taken the edge off the league leaders. Kura have been solid this year and have not really been on the end of any really big hammerings in the league and have scored in every game they have played in, and they have club talisman Harry Hillary-Jenkins back in the side. TIP: Waitakere to win a 5 goal thriller, could be 3-2 or 4-1. Franklin Utd vs Hibiscus Coast Massey Park @ 3pm The leagues southern most team takes on the leagues northern most team - both sides do have added incentive as they both find themselves in a bit of a relegation battle with the bottom 6 teams. The reverse fixture in the first round un-officially was a heavy loss for the Waiuku and Pukekohe joint venture but with both sides having played ineligible players it's like this game didn't exist with no points or goals awarded. TIP: Tight game I think with Franklin to steal it late. Ellerslie AFC vs Oratia Utd The Ave @ 5pm A ding dong relegation scrap here - with the previous game notching up 7 goals and a red card on the opening day of the season - hopefully a little less drama this time around as both teams will be scrapping to get out of the bottom 6 and catch up on the top 5 - both sides come into this fixture with losses in the Cup and will want to put that right! TIP: So hard to tip your own team and it's been a while since we tasted league victory but fingers crossed there is points in this game for us

ORATIA UNITED
MATCH REPORT Cup and League The first game of our weekend was a reserves fixture against Metro – with the Ellerslie Reserves sitting top of the table and the visitors in mid-table we were nervous about another banana skin and to be fair we had a few players injured or un-available so we would have to play bloody well to grab all three points. A halftime score of 0-0 showed how close the game was but a goal to Art Twigg in the 40th minute according to the teamsheet…. Hold on in the 40th minute? Isn’t that in the first half? How can it be 0-0 at halftime then? Excuse me Mr Referee can I have some clarification? What I can confirm is that Metro did finish this game well and after Lloyd had made a wonderful save to his right to deny the equaliser he could not do much about the well hit dipping shot from Metro’s livewire Bright Nkrumah which shared the points between the two sides. The result still leaves the reserves with a bit of a buffer at the top of the table as we head into the second round of games, and with numbers still ok after a few injuries we should hopefully see the young lads kick on in the second half of the season. Following the reserves game the First Team took the field – desperate for some points to finish off the round and aware that the Mangere eligibility scandal had once again dropped us into the relegation spots. There were very few changes from the team at North Shore, Tim Richardson came back into the team after being away last weekend and Alex was on the bench as he had a knock from the previous week – Adam Scott came into the lineup to replace him. It initially looked like our week focusing on possession had paid off as we started well and were competing with the visitors well – then came a stroke of poor luck. Jason had the ball in his hands and punted it up field like he had 100 times before, the only difference this time is the AR on the dugout side of the field decided Jason had handballed outside the box when punting it – video evidence has since suggested this was an extremely poor call – Metro setup the free kick, which we initially defended well and cleared the ball to the middle third of the field – Isaac tried his best to hold off two defenders, however Metro ended up with the ball and shifted it to our left side and fired a good square ball across the goal for Jamie Shields to guide home with the smallest of touches. There was no other scoring in the first half as we headed to the sheds a little disappointed to have conceded a goal having played so well, but we focused on the job at hand and tried to adjust a few things for the second half to make us more effective. We again started the second half well and we were keeping the ball for good periods before we hit a bit of a setback in the 59th minute when the referee gave Metro a penalty for some holding in the box – some may say it’s soft but it’s something we need to learn from for our games in the rest of the season. Rizal stepped up and converted the penalty to give Metro a 2-0 lead to further punish our mistake. Alex and Callum both entered the game in the 8 minutes following the 2nd Metro goal – their presence gave us a little boost as we looked to peg a goal back – and we had a golden opportunity as Tim Richardson pulled out a standard stepover and drove past a defender into the box – the defender got sucked in and stuck a leg out to make the tackle and clearly brought Tim down, the clipping of boot on player audible to both benches. The man in the middle though was not to be convinced as he waved play on as the Metro team cleared the ball behind the goal line – somewhat confused the referee seemed to be trying to remember which Ellerslie player had went down so he could book him for diving but then gave up and went with a corner instead. I can’t be 100% certain but I think had we been awarded that penalty and converted it I think we could have got something out of the game – however it’s those kind of calls which can deflate a side for a moment and that’s all it took for Metro to get a 3rd goal from Rizal again. We didn’t give up though and we continued to test the defence line for Metro as we hunted for a consolation goal, something to give us some hope for Monday. It wasn’t to be though and the game finished at 3-0 to the visitors and we had to cop another league loss to wrap up the first round of games in the league (hopefully an improved second half of the season to come). Martin Pike who made his 50th Ellerslie AFC appearance against North Shore last weekend was our Man of the Match as he toiled away in midfield.
SUNDAY
26
The next game was Sunday as our Women’s First Team took on Lynn Avon in the ASB Women’s Knockout Cup on the new sand based field at Michaels Ave.
The two teams played off in three Cup finals (what was then called the Uncle Toby’s cup) in the early 2000’s with Ellerslie winning 1 and Lynn Avon winning 2 – one of the key players for Ellerslie in those three games was Maia Jackman who was lining up against us in this fixture in 2016 – and she would play a key figure in the outcome of this game. The smaller field suited our style of game as our midfield of Carina, Caitlin and Chrissy battled hard against their Premier League counterparts – while Fassy and in particular Tove took advantage of any space down the wings. At the back our centre back pairing of Debs and Fran (Little and Large) had their hands full looking after the experienced Jackman. Unfortunately Lynn Avon were the first team to draw blood as they broke down our right hand side before some good interplay left Jemima Ferrier a chance to score which she didn’t turn down, Alex in goal could do nothing but pick the ball up and heave it back upfield for a kick off. To the ladies credit they didn’t let that setup dampen their attacking threat and former Lynn Avon player Caitlin Janes had a great opportunity moments later which the superb LA GK saved, Fassy McBender also had a good chance which was only saved at the last moment with a block from the cover defence. Our other good chance in the first half was a familiar combo from the boot of Carina and the head of Debs as she guided the formers corner just past the far post. So halftime and a 1 goal deficit, but the ladies were not disheartened as they had competed well with the higher division team and shown we could mix it with this premier league team. A change at halftime saw Hanna Kelly come off due to injury and Debs shift to her normal left back slot which meant Amanda came on at centreback. It didn’t take us long to adjust in the second half though as Chrissy picked up a loose ball and sent speedster Sophie through on goal but the impressive Tessa Nicol made another good save for her team. During the halftime break Dan Cope the Lynn Avon coach had made a change and put his veteran Jackman into a centre back role – putting his experience where he needed it most would pay off for him later in the game. Lynn Avon were still causing us problems and they almost doubled their lead but for the intervention of our young right back Louise Cairns who made a great last ditch tackle to deny the visitors the chance to increase their advantage. Jason made a couple more changes with Tove who had caused plenty of problems being replaced by fresh legs and Louise being replaced by speedster Anna Howden as Lou had taken a bit of a knock. The changes gave us just what we needed as we surged on and really took it to the Lynn Avon side in the last 20mins of the game – a spell that must have felt twice as long for the Premier League side who were remarkably looking to hold on for their first win of the season. Then came the moment we discussed earlier – with the experienced and wily Jackman, who ended up with a one on one foot race with Sophie Sills who had pace on her, Jackman wasn’t having any of that though as she did everything she could to slow the speedster down, as she basically tried to rag doll the Ellerslie striker away from the ball. It was one of those moments when it looked like the referee was just waiting for the attacker to hit the deck before he blew the whistle to confirm the penalty – but Sophie was determined to keep battling and she got her shot off under incredible pressure but due to the questionably legal challenge from Jackman she was unable to direct her shot away from Nicol in goal. I will never understand referee’s who decide to punish players who refuse to flop in these situations – there is no doubt in my mind that if Sophie had fallen over we would have been awarded a spot kick, however the referee must have thought getting a shot off was advantage enough. Jackman however was roundly applauded by her bench and supporters as they recognised the importance of her “professional play” at a time her team needed every bit of her experience. We still had time for two more chances as both Caitlin and Chrissy had chances to equalise the game and take us to extra time – sadly we just couldn’t breach Nicols goal as she kept her side in the cup tie with a couple more good saves. Lynn Avon the bookies favourites took the cup victory, but it was a good well contested game and there certainly was nothing left in the tanks for the Ellerslie ladies who gave it everything – they now focus on a key league game away to Papakura this weekend!

MATCH REPORT (continued) It would be remiss of me to mention the Women’s Reserves who played Otahuhu Div 4 in the AFF Women’s cup before the ASB Women’s Knockout Cup game – I missed the first 8 minutes of the game and in the process missed 4 goals as the Reserves ran rampant against the Seaside Park outfit. The final score was 15-0 to the home side with Karen Butterworth notching up 6 goals – I don’t have the full goal breakdown but congrats to Nicola and her reserves side for a convincing win. MONDAY Monday was when we next played as our Men’s Reserves headed over to Keith Hay Park to take on Three Kings in a NRFL Knockout Cup game – the reserves were a little decimated by injuries and unavailability’s which meant callups for NRFL Academy members Ryan Margison, Sam Twigg and Denny Twigg (the later making his first reserves appearance). An exciting first half saw 5 goals with the away side coming into the break with the 1 goal advantage – courtesy of a double from Art Twigg and a great volley from younger brother Sam – That was all the scoring in the game as the Reserves toughed out a scoreless second half to win the cup tie without any need for penalties. So it was back to Michaels Ave for the final instalment of Ellerslie vs Metro for Queen’s Birthday 2K16. A couple of changes from Saturdays team with Alex back into the starting side with Adam Scott dropping out due to injury – Callum Waters was also back in the starting lineup as Coach Wallace rotated his midfield to keep his players fresh. We again started the game well – after an inspiring pre-match talk from Coach Wallace and special coach Fredrik Ljungberg, however whilst we kept possession for long periods of time we were unable to carve out really good opportunities and we once again in almost exact circumstances come undone with the assistance of a referee’s call – It was on poor Jason again, this time he raced out to a through ball and bravely slid in and cleared the ball into touch in textbook sweeper keeper style – however the man in the middle appeared to be no Manuel Nuer fan as he raced over the spot where the tackle had been made and slapped a yellow ticket on Mr Mann. To add insult to injury from the resulting free kick veteran Stu Roberts smashed home a perfect volley from Callum’s clearing header – it was a great goal and hard to curse your luck, but maybe Metro should not have had the chance in the first place. And no Stu it wasn’t last Mann either! The remaining 10 minutes of the half played out with little drama as we continued to dominate possession while Metro remained dangerous on the break. Like so many halftimes this season there wasn’t a lot going wrong so there was no ranting or panic – just some adjustments to see if we could become a little more dangerous in certain areas. It initially appeared in the second stanza as things would play out much like the first half as we dominated with the ball without too much penetration and Metro continued to hit us on the counter. It wasn’t until we made some changes to the team in the 63rd and 68th minutes with Jordan and Art coming on the field. The players they replaced were not playing badly by any stretch but it was more a chance to try attacking a slightly different way and Jordan set about unsettling the Metro side as he buzzed around and Art after his early 2 goal haul was tasked in assisting us to find an equaliser. Around this time we got a result from the man in the middle as we saw the rare sight of him pointing to the spot after Christian had been taken down in the box – as mentioned previously however the man between the sticks for the Metro side was determined not to let any cheap ones in and he saved well to keep us trailing. Our last change came in the 70th minute as young gun Dylan came on for Basha who had put another solid shift in at right back – Again the change wasn’t because Basha was playing poorly, infact he had a good game but just a case of rotating the side and trying something a little different. I’m not sure if it was related to the changes or Isaac finally got the freedom down our right he had been searching for all game – but Martin Pike’s fine ball over the back of the Metro defence left Isaac still with a couple of players to beat, but he turned them in and out and beat the keeper at his far post to equalise the game. From that points we continued to attack and push the visiting team hard as we searched for that goal to take us into the next round – it wasn’t all one way though as Dylan kept us in the hunt late in regulation time with a couple of consecutive clearances off our goal line.
28
This took us to extra time, which wasn’t really ideal considering our league games coming up but the lads were well fired up with a cup win within our reach – unfortunately in the 107th min we failed to win the first ball in from a free kick and an offside Metro player picked up the knock down and squared it for his mate to give them the lead. There was still time for drama in the 119th minute of the game as Jordan whipped in a cross from our left which seemed to strike a Metro hand in the box but the referee initially waved it away before blowing the whistle to award a free kick to Metro and yellow card Jordan for the verbal lashing the energetic attacking midfielder had dished out. Minutes later the game was all over as the referee blew his whistle one last time and confirmed it was Metro FC who were stepping into the next round of the cup and left us to focus on our league campaign.
