PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome back to the Ave for our third week in a row – this weekend’s main opposition is Papakura City who visit us on Saturday for a key NRFL fixture and then again on Sunday in Women’s Conference action – So welcome to all four Papakura teams! This issue of the program has a lot of things covered – we have a special article about the Tier 2 International that was played last Friday night, we also have match reports from both our NRFL teams who had contrasting wins over Manurewa and a match report from the Women’s First Team as they narrowly lost to Metro. That’s not all though as we also ask some hard questions in our new Editor’s comments section – feel free to send us comments on that (contact details on the back page). In other news we have picked up a new intern – Mathieu Wolff joins us to get some experience on what it’s like to run a sports club and sports events, he is a bit of an expert on social media marketing as well so we will be picking his brains as much as he picks ours. He is going to help the juniors out on Saturday mornings as well as doing things like results, teamcards etc. So please if you have some time to say hello please welcome him to the Ellerslie AFC family! Facilities continue to be an issue for us as we struggle to replace what we thought we had at Ngahue for the season, we are still working on training venues with council but in terms of games we have had some small wins with the re-opening of 1 ground at Michaels Ave (soon to be a second one) – so fingers crossed we can continue to make some small gains while we wait on the red tape on Ngahue to be sorted. In regards to facilities our clubrooms and bar are getting a facelift – the Bar is getting all the fridges and taps replaced as we have signed a deal with Independent Liquor – this has yet to be scheduled but I’m hoping this is all completed in the next couple of weeks. The clubrooms will be closed between the 25 th July and 19th of August for works to be done – this will be emailed out to members closer to the time. While it’s inconvenient to have this closed it will be worth it I think in the end!
While it’s still open though please come up and enjoy the club atmosphere – we will have the All Blacks game on the big screen on Saturday so make a night of it after your game! Cheers Tim

CLUB/COMMUNITY EVENTS and NEWS Ngahue Reserve OFC have confirmed the fields at Ngahue Reserve will remain closed indefinitely while maintenance is carried out on the fields and construction is completed on the carparks and driveways - visit our website for more info!
Canteen The club’s Under 15’s girls side (The Red Comets) are going to Raro on a end of season tour - to fundraise for that they are running the club canteen each Saturday morning and for First Team games - go and see them for some yummy food and support their trip.
Michaels Ave Lower Fields Just this week the council opened up the 2nd field down the bottom at Michaels Ave - the first field that was opened just under a month ago has been very well received and we have had been slammed with requests to play on it. While both fields are small we can make them bigger in 2017 as the rest of the work down the bottom is completed. Exciting times ahead!

INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL On Friday the 17th of June we hosted a Tier 2 international game at Michaels Ave Reserve - this wasn't the first time we have hosted this kind of game as we had previously welcomed Tefana, New Caledonia U17's and plenty of others - this time it was the Cook Islands U20's Men's Team who were in the last part's of their preparation for the OFC U20's Preliminary Qualifiers. Read more about their journey here (digital version only) The team they faced up against was our Men's Championship team who were having a pretty good season as they challenge for the title in their first season back in this division after having dropped from NRFL Div 2 Reserves last year. Glen and his team were really excited for this game which also featured an Ellerslie AFC developed referee in charge in Michael Clark (who was making his T2 debut). The game itself was very well contested with the Cook's pace and athleticism well matched by the strength and organisation of the Ellerslie side, which was marshalled well by the centre back pairing of Cook Islander Stephen Dowsett and our very own Irishman Niall Bell. Both teams took the opportunity to roll a few subs to experiment with their teams, the Cooks tinkered away and late in the game they started reducing their team to further challenge themselves - Glen also rotated his team as he saved some legs for his league game against Papatoetoe United the following day. One of the players who came off at halftime Niall Bell was kind enough to talk to us briefly during the second half.
8
AT THE AVE It was clear talking to Niall that the Champs team were very excited to be playing in the fixture and they had done a bunch of research on the team and figured out one of the Cook's players was playing in Germany - he also took a couple of photo's for us, on of which we can see on the previous page The Cooks were able to grab a well taken goal midway through the second half via their Germany based striker and Niall did tell me at the time that had he been on the field that goal may not have been scored. "It was 0-0 when I came off mate" he told me in his undeniable Irish accent. All in all though the Champs team did themselves proud - played the game competitively but in a good spirit and wished the Cook Island boys all the best in their World Cup Prelim's - hopefully we can see more of these games in the future. Finally a big thanks to Nga for helping to organise the game - much appreciated!

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW There is only a few games in Lotto NRFL Div 1 action this weekend due to the Chatham Cup, but after getting 3 from 5 results last weekend the pressure is on to keep up our picking standards - so here goes.... METRO FC vs ORATIA UTD WAITAKERE CITY vs HIBISCUS COAST FRANKLIN UTD vs MT ALBERT PONSONBY
Postponed Postponed Postponed
NORTH SHORE UTD vs MANUREWA AFC
The Hill @ 3pm
Both sides are having good seasons but Shore have kicked on in the league table in the last couple of weeks as they seem to have found some consistency - Rewa are always dangerous with their potent front line but will want to stop a few goals at the other end if they want to stay in the promotion race. Interesting to see Shore have re-signed Sam Copp who will replace coach Thomas Fawdry in goal.
PICK: Shore look like they have the balanced team to push on for the rest of the year - picking them to win 4-2 ELLERSLIE AFC vs PAPAKURA
The Ave @ 5pm
Whilst Ellerslie have picked up 6 points in the last two weeks the relegation battle threat is still there - and they certainly will not want to be giving up points to a team who is on the fringes of the battle themselves. Could be an interesting game consideri ng what happened in the return leg and the events of the last couple of weeks - a loss for either team isn't the end of the world but a win pops them just that bit further away from the scrap at the bottom.
PICK: Again hard to pick - Purely based on bias I am going for a narrow home victory MANGERE UNITED - BYE
Because of the lack of NRFL Div 1 fixtures I thought we could have a quick look at some of the Chatham Cup games involving NRFL 1 teams - so let's look at them now: FORREST HILL MILFORD vs MT ALBERT PONSONBY
Becroft @ 2pm
Don't be fooled by the midtable position of FHM in the Premier League - they are a massive challenge for Scott McKay and his team, a job made harder by the recruitment of Ryan De Veries back to the first winter club starred for. I usually stay clear of rumours, but it's hard not to be curious when you hear figures of $600-$1000 per game quoted. The reality is probably much different but what's the saying, where there is smoke there is.... MAP will have to play out of their skins for a result here but they have a strong group and football can be a funny game.
PICK: I'm going for an upset of sorts - FHM to win it, but only after extra time. HIBISCUS COAST vs WAITAKERE CITY
Stanmore Bay @ 2pm
Our only all NRFL Div 1 clash in the cup and it's a interesting one on several levels, the league game between the two sides postponed for the cup game (pretty big co-incidence that), Coast actually beat Waitakere early in the season before having the result overturned due to playing an "ineligble" player - Waitakere have gone on an unbeaten run since then and look unstoppable in the league - but this is the cup! Another thing in City's favour is they do have history in the cup and with Jake Butler they have probably the best player in the NRFL (should be sitting in the top 5 at the very least)
PICK: I can't see Coast getting up for this, but Waitakere will slip up at some point - just not here I don't think. METRO FC vs THREE KINGS
Phyllis Street @ 5pm
The Cup throws up all sorts of interesting games - this one is a central Auckland derby as David (Metro) host Goliath (Three Kings) at what is probably my second favourite away venue in Auckland (just behind Mangere Mountain). We obviously got a pretty good look at Metro over queens birthday weekend and they were not what I was expecting, when I scouted them earlier in the year a couple of times they were exciting going forward and creative in midifeld but weak at the back (GK aside). When w e played them they were organised and played pretty risk free counter attack football - Stu Roberts has a mountain of influence on the side from the center of Midfield. Three Kings? I have no idea, other than they sit 5th in a tough Premier League and wi ll be tough opposition for the home side.
PICK: Tough tough pick - have to go with the Premier League side but Metro will give it a damn good crack.

MATCH REPORT Game of two halves, One team wanted it more, Our mistakes were punished, They were more clinical than us, 2-0 is a dangerous lead, comeback kings, It’s just one of those games etc etc – the list goes on.
All of those clichés applied to these set of games as Manurewa made the trip up state highway 1 to Michaels Ave, with their First Team flying high in the division it was going to be a tough game – however first up it was our own high flying reserves who looked to consolidate their lead at the top of the table.
Ben Fletcher’s young side had been in good form lately with wins in 4 of their last 5 games including a 7-0 hiding of Oratia last week, however this Rewa team posed several problems (as they had in the first round at Memorial Park) and it wasn’t until very late in the game that Elite Lawn and Garden Services Ellerslie were able to take the lead.
Manurewa who had been giving away a few fouls in the game conceded a free kick near the edge of the box and Monju stepped up to take the free kick from a similar place to where he opened the scoring against Oratia last week – this time though the Rewa keeper made a decent save down low but Connor Watts was on hand to sweep the loose ball home and give the home side the lead late in the 90th of the game.
It was probably a game where the reserves will feel like they should have won it earlier but their impressive pressing game late in this game was devastating for the visitors and while the goal came from a free kick it was the pressure created by the teams press that eventually paid off. In the First Team game the drama continued as goals poured early in the game with Manurewa grabbing the lead with 2 goals that silenced the decent sized home crowd, a couple of very nice finishes after the fluid front 4 had broken us down to create the chances they had taken so nicely.
As they say in football a 2-0 lead is a dangerous lead and the saying proved true as Elite Lawn and Garden Services Ellerslie fought back to level the game – firstly with a bit of a freakish goal that seemed to bounce off the near post from an Adam Scott cross, into Isaac and back into the net past Sean Dowling – the second goal was far more standard as a Rewa defender pulled Alex down in the box, he responded by getting up and dusting himself off before smashing the ball into the back of the net from the penalty spot to level the game.
24
There was still time for another goal though as Manurewa retook the lead as they pounced on some indecision to take a 1 goal lead into the halftime break. Some home truths about our level of defending in the first half along with a bit of a change of shape gave us a little confidence for the second stanza ahead.
It took 15 mins of the second half for Isaac to draw us level with his second goal of the evening – but he wasn’t done as 4 mins later he put us ahead with his hat-trick goal, no small feat for the man who was playing his last game of the season (and possibly ever) for Elite Lawn and Garden Services Ellerslie as he moves overseas to live.
The icing on the cake came late in the second half as Jordan Oosterhof who had came on as an impact player late in the game picked up the ball outside the box with no defenders infront of him and faked a shot before slotting into an empty net to put the points firmly on our side of the ledger.
It was telling in the aftermatch speeches that both coaches lamented their sides in-ability to stop the goals flowing, but the fans were not complaining as they were witness to 8 goals (as long as they turned up on time).
This weekend the Elite Lawn and Garden Services Ellerslie teams have a chance to redeem themselves against Papakura City who were very strong at home in the first round – with the reserves narrowly grabbing a win while the first team suffered a 3-0 loss. Hopefully we can see some more points in the bag for the Red, Black and Golds! Game Details: Reserves Elite Lawn and Garden Services Ellerslie 1 C.Watts (90+). Manurewa AFC 0 Man of the Match: TBC

MATCH REPORT - WOMEN’S FIRSTS Match Report & Attendance – 19th June – Metro (home) 3-2 Loss
Goal Scorers: Debs (Lana corner) and Carina (Sophie) PoD: Lana 3, Hanna 2, Sarah 1 I’ll try to keep it short. Unfortunate result, but despite the final score I think you can all hold your heads high, I was very impressed with the football we were playing out there, both our goals were superb and also products of things we’ve been working on throughout the season. Debs off Lana’s corner popped nicely into the top left corner, and then Sophie attacking from the right calmly pushed a long pass flat along the ground for Carina to bury bottom right from outside the 18 yard. Not only the goals though, the opportunities we created were excellent, how we were starting to really control the game and direct them where we wanted, showing a lot of patience and intelligent football, switching wide etc. It’s really pleasing to see it coming together. Improvements Creating width – I thought we did this well, very well at times, but let’s do it more, and let’s do it quicker so it becomes instinctual. So how can we achieve this? How can we increase the speed of our switching? How can we maximise the benefit of our switching? I have some things in mind but I look forward to hearing your answers on Tuesday.

EDITOR’S COMMENTS Responsibility - it’s everywhere in life and it’s no different in football - but it’s a bit different in football than it is in the rest of life, in the great game it seems responsibility lines flow down but not up - which leads to some curious scenario’s. A certain local football club were recently sanctioned on their twitter page for questioning the national football team - while no one doubts the players gave their best there were some serious questions asked of the management team led by Anthony Hudson. It was then interesting to see that same man come out on national radio and refuse to justify himself to the whinging public! Hold on, is he not representing our national team who is the gem in the crown of NZF who we pay levies to each year? Don’t we as stakeholders deserve an answer? Isn’t he responsible to us as investors in his high performance program? Regulations are the other bugbear at the moment - honestly what is the story with regulations, are they all created and maintained to the letter by NZF or are each federation given a certain amount of flexibility to re-write or interpret the regulations to suit their area? How come there always seems to be a loophole (rightly or wrongly)? Does there need to be some smarter strategic thinking about the game - in areas like cautions, why are we dipping into the pockets of our social players for garden variety issues - I’m told none of the other major sports hit their players with financial penalties for low level issues - honestly what is the point of fining a player from AFF Men’s Div 5 for “breaking up a promising attack” - all that happens is the club get’s charged from the federation and then the club spends countless amounts of resource chasing up a $25 fine which benefits NO-ONE! Things like this need to be looked into - by a group of people who need to focus on what makes the sport attractive to play and not just what has been done in the past. Who is responsible for this kind of forward planning?
Next program we will look at another issue with Football (which is a particular problem in Auckland) - School vs Club Football!
