PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome everyone to Michaels Ave for another weekend of football – before we get into any formalities we have a few things to announce:
We expect to be opening a field down the bottom at Michaels Ave by the end of May (hopefully sooner). It will be awesome to see some footy getting played down there! The club is working hard behind the scenes on an exciting new tool to improve how we communicate to our members (club wide) – we hope to have some more information about that in the first week of June Independent Liquor have agreed to give our bar a much needed makeover including new fridges and beer taps – we expect to have this all installed in the next couple of weeks – it does mean some line items that are not supplied by Independent will be phased out during the course of the season. Lastly the council have agreed to give the clubrooms a facelift – including all new carpet and light fixtures, a completely remodelled Kitchen and all new Bathrooms – that work is pencilled to be completed between late-July and mid-August.
So some exciting news there about the club – but todays focus is on the Chatham Cup, a competition steeped in history and tradition – I just hope for the good of the competition that NZF don’t allow ASBP franchises to enter next season!
Todays tie see’s NRFL Div 2 leaders Takapuna take the trip south to Michaels Ave to take on an oddly out of form Ellerslie side – with a former Ellerslie player pulling the midfield strings for Taka only adding to the intrigue of this fixture. I think we will see a decent crowd because of the late kick off, all other cup games in Auckland on Saturday are afternoon kickoffs so we may get some other clubs come and have a look. Takapuna having been in NRFL Div 1 last season will want to prove they are genuine contenders to bounce right back, and they have had a bit of a rough last couple of years at Michaels Ave so this new look Taka side will want to bury that record. Ellerslie have like I said been out of form – there is talent there and plenty of it, but we just have not clicked often enough – a marked improvement in our last league game against Waitakere was promising and we followed that up with a decent showing against Birko last week when we had the BYE but we need to put out a good performance against Taka to help us build up for our crucial league game against Franklin the following week. Just quickly I would like to invite everyone to come down to Michaels Ave on Sunday and watch our Women’s Conference team who have been in great form this season and sit in the top 4 in their league (and their reserves side in the top 3) and have a realistic chance of winning promotion to the NRFL Woman’s Premier League. Their game against Glen Eden Utd is at 1:30pm (reserves at 11:30am) so come on down and support the ladies!

CHATHAM CUP MY CHATHAM CUP FAVOURITE MEMORY (memory of details aided by ultimatenzsoccer.com) By Tim Adams Round 4 2013: Glenfield Rovers vs Birkenhead United – The Battle of Highbury This tie is in my memory the game with the most drama, on and off the field – and it was talked about well after the final whistle – a cup classic! Background: Glenfield vs Birkenhead is a derby game so there was going to be fireworks for this game – but no-one expected how this would play out. The drama started when McFetridge # 1 was ruled out as a venue in the week leading up to this game due to the weather – Glenfield then tried to move the game to another field at McFetridge, this was quickly rejected by match officials. It was then confirmed the fixture would be played at the home of Takapuna (Glenfield coach Danny Donegans old club) – the game kicked off and Birkenhead took apart their rivals and lead 3-0 when the football gods brought down the rain to such an extent that the referee had to abandon the tie. Birkenhead tried in vain to have the tie ruled as a win to them, and also tried to arrange the last little bit of the game to be played with the score remaining at 3-0 – however NZF were having none of it and ruled a full replay with clean scores (and cards). So a date was set for Glenfield v Birko II and that’s when it got really interesting…. Game Day: After following the dram on social media from the abandoned game I made the call that this was a game I could not miss – so I drove over to Taharoto Park to witness the following afternoon/evening of amazing events. When I turned up a little before the listed kick off time I was initially a little confused as neither of the teams were out warming up and there were not many fans – what had I missed? Well apparently Taharoto Park had been vandalised the night before – mainly the upper field which wasn’t being used for the cup game but also some suspiciously new looking wood nails (59 of them) were found around the playing area. NZF officials were left with no other option than to move the game to North Harbour Stadium Outer Oval – more precisely the postage stamp artificial pitch. This strange turn of events certainly played into the hands of the Glenfield team who were much better suited to the small pitch – with their physical presence and aerial prowess. What unfolded next in this game was without any doubt in my mind the greatest Cup game I have ever seen – even without the rich backstory to this point this game was a classic, it had everything. I could spend pages and pages writing about this game but I’m going to steal a couple of lines from official reports to help describe the “fun” - see below: Birkenhead, who were 3-0 ahead when last week’s match got abandoned, were the first to score when Sam Jenkins got on the end of a free kick midway through the first half but Matt Wallace drew Rovers level in first half injury time shortly after Birkenhead’s first choice number one, John Fletcher left the field injured.
8
Despite being reduced to 10 men in the 87th minute when Danny Parkes received his second yellow, Glenfield looked to have snatched it with Michael Gywther’s 90th minute penalty. However, a red card to Rovers ‘keeper Neil Dayal for striking an opponent gifted Jack Hobson McVeigh the chance to even the scores again time from the penalty spot deep into injury time. Even then there was still time for both teams to rattle the woodwork before fulltime was finally called and the game sent to extra time. Birkenhead’s extra numbers finally told in the second period of extra time with Sam Margetts clinching the win in the 109th minute and a fourth round home tie against Hamilton Wanderers next Saturday. Full report available here
What that mini report doesn’t mention is the passion and hatred displayed by both teams during this fixture – there were at least three occasions when every player on the field + both benches and some officials were squished into a very small space as players in the middle exchanged sneaky cheap shots and verbal barbs. It’s hard to do the game justice in words to be honest – I have managed to dig up a Phototek album from the game – if your reading this online click on the link below to have a look at the pictures of the game which will show you the atmosphere I can’t explain: http://www.phototek.dns2go.com/age/soc/130623_soc.html
I will leave you with what I think is the image that describes the critical point of the game – when Rovers keeper Neil Dayal concedes a pen and get’s himself sent off right at the end of regulation time – effectively keeping Birko alive in the tie.
It would be great to hear your recollection of this game if you were there – or if you have a favourite Cup or league game memory send it to us at chairman@ellersliefootball.org.nz and we will share it in our program.

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW The Preview is all about the cup this weekend - and we focus on just those cup ties that feature two NRFL sides, otherwise it would just be too hard! So here we go - there will be cupsets! Fencibles Utd vs Claudeland Rovers Riverhills @ 2pm This won't be the first time you have heard this but on paper this looks like a home team win - with Fencies sitting 2nd from top and Rovers sitting second from bottom this does have the smell of a upset for the Waikato team. Still we are not going to pick every upset to actually come through - that would be crazy. PICK: Fencibles to secure this tie in regulation time Albany Utd vs Te Atatu AFC Rosedale Park @ 2pm Only two spots and 4 points separate these two NRFL sides so this could be a tasty little cup tie - infact it might just be our best candidate for penalties in this Northern Region Cup draw. However a closer look at both teams records identifies a bit of a difference in the old for and against columns. PICK: Tat in extra time - will rob us of pens Hibiscus Coast vs Papatoetoe AFC Stanmore Bay Reserve @ 2pm A challenge for Papatoetoe here as they take on a team from NRFL Div 1 - they do sit in 5th spot and may present a bit of a challenge for NRFL Div 1 leaders Coast, who have the added advantage of playing at home on a compact pitch. I don't think Toe will be able to handle the physicalness of the Coast side, despite being a about a match based on playing ability. PICK: Coast in normal time by 1 or 2 Ngaruawahia AFC vs Mangere Utd Centennial Park @ 2:30pm The Green Machine grab a home tie here against jekyll and hyde side Mangere who have started to pick up points in their last couple of games - Narra may not prioritise this game as they look to put their league games first to avoid possibly being the first team to suffer three successive relegations. PICK: Mangere not great travellers previously - Narra to eek it in extra time Ellerslie AFC vs Takapuna AFC Michaels Ave @ 5pm League table means very little for this game as top of NRFL Div 2 takes on 2nd from bottom of NRFL Div 1 - and with Taka only being relegated last season there may be very little between these two sides - in fact Takapuna based on form may even be favourites. PICK: Penalties? I'm not brave enough to pick a winner here. North Shore Utd vs Manurewa AFC (Sunday) Allen Hill @ 2pm Our only all NRFL Div 1 clash of the round, with North Shore holding the home advantage and the slimmest of advantage in the league (7 goals and 0 points separate these teams). Perhaps the biggest advantage Shore hold was the 4-2 win in the 3rd round against Rewa - but Rewa have been in decent form since then so this tie could be close. PICK: Rewa have pace upfront, picking them to slightly upset the odds and win this game

MATCH REPORT - ROUND 7 Round 7 and our 5th away game saw us travel down the North-western motorway until it petered out into Fred Taylor Drive and Brigham Creek Road, a sharp left took us to the home of Waitakere United and Waitakere City – The Fred! The biggest surprise upon arrival was to find out we had been scheduled to play on the #1 instead of the #2 – the number 1 at Fred Taylor park is a much maligned field, in the ASB Premiership it’s often called a paddock with viewers numbering 2 men and a dog – however I think it’s a special park with it’s own unique attractiveness – and certainly much better than the #2. The grass was on the long side and it was a bit slow and energy sapping but it was in great condition having been the first game on there in a while – and there was box nets! Since this was an away game we donned the all gold strip, which was pointed out to me during the reserves game is an unlucky strip with no wins in it so far this year. So that immediately meant we wouldn’t pick up any points today….. (superstition #1) The Reserves lined up with a strong team despite the absence of leading scorer Alex Witteveen who had been recalled to First Team action – taking his place was the very capable Kojo Norku who was on club debut after a long recovery from injury during pre-season.
It didn’t take long for Kojo to make an impact as he ended up on our left flank with the ball and crossed for the diminutive Yoshi Saga to rise and head the ball home via the right hand post – A great cross from Kojo and back post run from Yoshi to take the lead! Waitakere were a decent side and moved the ball well away from the busy areas and countered when we lost the ball well – it was only due to some keeping heroics from Jordan in the first half and Lloyd in the second that kept us ahead for the majority of the game. The pressure finally told as we gave the ball away far too much in the second half as the long soft surface effected both our passing and fitness, a equaliser was inevitable since we were wearing yellow and it came eventually towards the tail end of the second half. An un-named player on the bench in the reserves game mentioned that whenever he wore his red polka dot shoes that we didn’t win (superstition #2), I made a wish at that point that we had wore Red Polka dot shirts and yellow shoes! FINAL SCORE: Waitakere 1, Ellerslie 1 Player of the Day: Kojo Norku
In the first team game we were determined to bounce back with a better performance after last weekends issues – as added motivation the Waitakere City side contained several ex-Ellerslie players who we were keen not to embarrass ourselves in front of. We made a few changes to the team from the side who came out against MAP on ANZAC Day – with most notably Keegan Smith coming in for his First Team debut at the tender age of 16, Isaac Brealey also returned after missing the MAP game due to a small knock.

Jason Mann, Freddie Ljungberg, Pete Jones and Ricky Barbosa all missed the game through injury, although both Pete and Jason are nearing recovery from their long term injuries. The boys were determined not to perform as badly as we had over ANZAC weekend and they showed their resolve with a focused warm up and pre-game chat in the sheds. We did start the game well as Tim Richardson had an early shot on goal after a powerful run through midfield – unfortunately we did concede a bit of a soft goal midway through the first spell as Anthony Hagan curled in a corner, that did dampen our spirit slightly but we still dealt with the attacking threat of Dylan Manickum, Paul Rhodes and Keegan Linderboom well enough for the remainder of the first stanza. We resisted the urge at halftime to make any changes as we were seeing an improved performance and there were no niggles. Well there were niggles but they were not injury ones they were from a few players on the field as the game became very frantic and rushed in the second period.
We were rewarded for our improved performance levels with a chance to equalise from the spot when a Waitak player took down Isaac from behind – Isaac had made a break down the left around the outside of the Waitak CB and made his way into the box and was readying himself for a one v one shot with the keeper when the trailing Waitak CB barrelled him over from behind. It was a relief to get a chance to equalise but we were a little puzzled about the lack of any kind of caution to the player who had given the penalty away. Skipper Martin Pike stood up on penalty duty and sent the Waitak keeper the wrong way as he bulged the back of the net and opened his 2016 account – that was more than 2 and a half games we had gone without scoring and it was a relief to finally shed that duck egg. After the goal I thought we settled pretty well and were growing into the game when the Yellow strip curse struck us again when Tim Richardson turned the ball over in midfield, it was an obvious foul to win the ball from T-Rich but it wasn’t called by the official and Waitak pushed forward on the counter, an ambitious ball played forward towards Keegan Linderboom took deflections off Stefan and Seb to lay exactly into the path of Linderboom who took a touch and slid the ball past the advancing Keegan Smith to give Waitak the lead – that’s football but it’s desperately unlucky as well. Alex Witteveen came on for his first minutes of the season after suffering a nasty ankle injury early in pre-season, and he did a good job holding up the tiring Waitak City centreback pairing – but unfortunately we just couldn’t put enough pressure on the home side to sneak out another goal. A better performance against I think the best side on paper in the league and a goal to break our drought – now we have 6 training sessions and a friendly game and a Cup game between Waitak and our next fixture at home against new boys Franklin – plenty of time to fix a few things and get the confidence back for the lads and back to our potential. FINAL SCORE: Waitakere 2, Ellerslie 1 Player of the Day: Martin Pike (sponsored by Mandata)
