PROUDLY PRESENTS

“THE AVE”

ELLERSLIE VS TAURANGA

WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Tonight’s program is packed full of ac on and informa on and we kick this all off with NRFL Div 2 Reserves ac on as we welcome the Onehunga Mangere Reserves to Michaels Ave. Our unbeaten “Thirds” team will look to con nue their good start against a team which held them to a draw last season at Mangere Mountain. Ac on then moves to Saturday as we welcome Duncan Lowry and his Tauranga side north – it’s the first me we have hosted them since 2009 when Ellerslie AFC recorded an 8-0 win, how things have changed since then! More recently there was a 0-0 draw at Links Ave in the grading round of 2010 – this was the season the NFF clubs came back into the NRFL, and was also the season we recorded an 11 win, 2 draw, 2 loss record and narrowly missed out on promo on to the Premier League via the playoffs. All that means nothing for tomorrow’s game which see’s Tauranga as the top team in the league (a7er gaining promo on last year), look to get some breathing space from us in 2nd as well as the rest of the chasing teams. It should be a cracker of a game! Our reserves side come into this fixture with some good recent form – they are a young side but have a lot of talent and promise and they will want to con nue their good form, 2 hatricks in successive games from different players shows they are a threat to the goal. Tauranga’s reserves in their first season in NRFL for ages have bounced back from dual losses in the opening rounds to pound 10 goals and concede none in their last two games, so they too have their scoring boots on – it could be a high scoring thriller! The rest of the club kicked off last week and congrats to all those teams who got out on the park and played – regardless of the result the first week is always pre:y tough, due to fitness, player availability etc etc – star ng in the holidays didn’t really help either! Up in the clubrooms we have all our staff back from last year – please take some me to introduce yourself to Saskia and Alannah who will be our 2015 Bar Staff and of course Joyce who will con nue to supply us with delights from the kitchen. Now that the scene is set – please enjoy your games this weekend and all the best of luck!

FRONT COVER: Conor keeps his cool under pressure! BACK COVER: United we stand, united we fall!

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW Mt Albert Ponsonby vs North Shore United Anderson Park 7pm Friday A game with an intriguing backstory for the home side - can Nick and his team bounce back against a North Shore side who are looking good on the field but in Paul Temple there is a coach looking to prove himself. Prediction: A much improved performance from MAP but NSU to score late to seal a 2-0 win. Forrest Hill Milford vs Mangere United Becroft Park 2:45pm Saturday FHM with a 3 win 1 loss record host Mangere who have the opposite record - Mangere still boast one of the best attacks in the league statistically but with most of those goals coming in the opening game are they punching above their weight? Prediction: FHM (3) one of the best sides in the league, Mangere (1)inconsistenent Ngaruawahia vs Manurewa Centennial Park 2:45pm Saturday A clash of the bottom sides and both teams will be desperate for their first win - both teams have improved in recent games but this will be a classic in terms of pressure Prediction: Normally I would go for the home side when a game looks this even but I liked the look of Rewa upfront, enough for a 1-0 win Waiuku vs Hibiscus Coast Massey Park 2:45pm Saturday Coast shot up the table last week after a disappointing opening day to the season, Waiuku on the other hand have battled hard and don’t look out of place in Div 1 but will want to pick up points at home Prediction: Coast to come down to earth and be held to a 3-3 draw. Takapuna vs Metro Taharoto Park 2:45pm Saturday Taka who have been a bit up and down might relish facing a Metro side who preseason were totally written off, but this Phyills Street side are the divisions surprise package. Metro with the points here could secure a spot in the top half of the table while Taka will want to pull away from the bottom group of 5. Prediction: Metro to continue to shock and awe with their team spirit - 3-2 win.

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT Last week the first team took on a very youthful Manurewa side packed full of Glendowie College current and ex players. In particular ex Ellerslie player Tahiro who picked up MOM for Manurewa. To use a common clichĂŠ this really was a game of two halves and then within the first half that was a game of two halves - so quarters I guess. In the opening quarter we looked solid and pinged the ball around and did enough to create a good opportunity for Josh to open the scoring in the 9th min. There were a few other chances after that but as the 1st quarter finished and passed into the 2nd there was a bit of a dangerous trend happening. Either by pure laziness or design we were being troubled by the Manurewa front 4 with three pacy players and one strong hold up player we were having to go one on one and it caused us problems. Luckily with a combination of good cover defence and some sharp goalkeeping from Conor we were able to shut them out until halftime. At halftime there was a desire to not repeat the issues from Ngaruawahia and the team came out for the second half full of fire and keen to push on and seal the game. It only took 5 mins for us to get our insurance goal with Andy flicking a nice ball through for #trich to square for Josh to finish - the keeper made a good save at close range but could only pop the ball up for Josh to nod home with this head. Andy then decided it was time for him to score and he wrapped the game up in the 63rd min with a tidy finish despite hurting his "favoured" hand early in the game setting up Josh. 1 goal and 2 assists for one of our vice captains and he is hitting the form that he was in last year before his OE.

16

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT Subs rolled on from the 80th minute as Jordan got a chance for Josh and should have won a penalty for handball in the box after some fine approach play - Simon Harrison and Robby Robinson also entered the field the former on First Team debut. Details: 1 C.Tracey, 15 R.O'Sullivan, 5 D.McLean, 16 F.Ljungberg, 13 M.Glenny, 4 M.Pike, 19 C.Waters, 14 T.Richardson, 10 A.Wallace, 11 A.Witteveen, 7 J.Anthony. Subs: 6 R.Robinson, 8 S.Harrison, 21 J.Oosterhof Thanks to everyone who came and supported us - we appreciate it and we look forward to next week vs Tauranga (Saturday) and Onehunga Mangere on Friday night for the Thirds.

RESERVES REPORT The Reserves (who finally strapped on the scoring boots last week but struggled at the other end instead and conceded a few) fielded another heavily changed side, what were we going to see this week? In to the team came Michael Ritchie (who is back from injury), Robby Robinson (geRng some minutes) and Isaac Brealey (who was also back from injury). On face value this game looked like a bit of a one man show with Isaac Brealey killing off any contest with four un-answered goals in the 15th, 20th, 62nd and 70th mins - but this was far from the case with Luke de Ruiter having a very good game holding the ball up and seRng up plaQorms to go forward. Further assistance came from Rahul down the le7 who revelled in the freedom Adam Sco: allowed him. On the other side Ben Shaw was able to get around Isaac who favoured cuRng in and his late run up the right created the opening for the first goal. Mladen, Monju and Seb get it ght in the middle and played the channels in-between the centre backs their fullbacks par cularly well. At the back Mike, Robby and Lloyd kept things safe and secured the first clean sheet of the year. Griffin, Simon and Myron all made impact off the bench in the second half - a true team performance with late goals to Seb and Simon to top off Isaac's 4 goal haul. Details: 1 L.Huysmans, 8 A.Sco:, 18 M.Ritchie, 25 R.Robinson, 16 B.Shaw, 23 S.Poelman, 7 M.Shohei, 11 M.Milovanovic, 12 I.Brealey, 14 L.de Ruiter, 20 R.Issar Subs: 22 M.Manickum, 6 G.Hill, 9 S.Harrison

THIRDS REPORT Firstly, Welcome to Onehunga Mangere Reserves. A7er an off season of transi on which has seen 4 players promoted within the club, another 4 move to pastures anew and 1 re re the thirds has a different flavour for this season. Despite this the team has managed to recruit well and with the new personnel managed to retain a slick style of play and some good results. 4 games into the season the thirds are siRng pre:y at the top of the ladder with a full 12 points, 15 goals for and 6 against. The team has bonded well finding a good balance, crea ng some lovely passages and combina ons of play. As opposed to last season where roughly 50% of the 130+ goals scored came from 2 players this season has seen 7 different players find the back of the net. There is perhaps a greater contribu on from all areas of the park. A player that has stood out thus far this season is Luke (Anthony) Dixon who this year has moved up the park from Right Back to Le7 Wing. Luke scored 2 goals from Right back last year but this year has managed 6 in 4 games. He has found an effec veness in the final third ming his movement well and combining these with composed and clinical finishing. Jono Rea, a new addi on to Ellerslie this year, has also found his feet bagging 2 goals and a couple of fine assists. Playing from the Right Wing Jono has bought some crea vity and balance to match Luke’s direct style of play. I believe all players from this squad can add value and depth to the Firsts and Reserves squads throughout this season providing good compe on for places and offering new ideas. Despite this strong start I believe there is more to come from this team. As we find our familiarity with each other and build on our rela onships on the field we can only improve and build on how we have started. With this I think we may find ourselves in a good posi on come year end. Enjoy the game. Ben Pauley
