PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome back to the Ave for another action packed weekend of Football – firstly let’s welcome our visitors today Waitakere. Jake and John welcome to you and your teams – you have had wonderful seasons so far and I’m told (have not done the math) that with a win for your First Team tonight you will have sealed promotion – that’s a great effort!
A special welcome back to Dylan, Harry and Jamie who used to grace Michaels Ave in the home colours – I’m sure you will enjoy your time back here and congrats on your excellent seasons to date. Of course we also welcome the Waitakere supporters – it’s the first game between our two sides on Michaels Ave since the Chatham Cup 4th round game in 2013 when Waitakere eventually beat Ellerslie (in a replay after the initial game was washed out) 3-1 with a certain Roy Krishna and todays coach Jake Butler key performers in that game. Waitakere went all the way to the final that year and they are on course to repeat this season as they host Caversham in the quarter-finals on the 6th of August – best of luck to you guys in that game! Ben Fletcher’s reserves have their own cup quarter final game to play on the 6 th of August when they travel down to Porritt Stadium to take on Hamilton Wanderers who sit midtable in the Premier Reserves table – but this will be no easy fixture as Wanderers always have decent reserves sides – but I’m sure we will be up for it! FHM and either Melville or Central and either Onehunga or MAP await the winner in the next round. Our women’s teams are in cup football action this weekend, our Women’s First Team have drawn Metro FC Women’s Div 2 while our Reserves have the glamour tie of an overseas cup game as they travel to Waiheke United – both games at 11am – best of luck ladies!
Lastly it’s farewell to the clubrooms after this weekend for the next month or so as the council undertakes some renovations – it’s great we are getting a new look and some added functionality but the timing is not great, hopefully we can push through and look forward to prizegiving at the end of September in the new look clubrooms! Tonight after the First Team aftermatch we have a fundraiser for the women’s reserves – a quiz – so if you have booked a table I look forward to seeing you up there, if not there might be some more tables available, flick us an email on chairman@ellersliefootball.org.nz to enquire.

CLUB/COMMUNITY EVENTS and NEWS We have a bit of a good news, bad news update this week - let's start with the bad news! NGAHUE RESERVE Unfortunately there has been no progress with getting access to Ngahue Reserve - this continues to be discussed between the council and OFC (we have been told to step out of the discussions by council) so we are unable to give any realistic update on when this might become available to club members. This is really disappointing that these two groups can't get their act together for our members. Ok so some good news CLUB APP After a couple of months of work with the developers we have managed to get our new club available for members. Some of the key features for members are direct links to the AFF fixtures portal as well as push messaging from the club over several different subscription levels. It would be great if you could download the app now and give it a whirl – search your app store for Ellerslie AFC or jump on our website (www.ellersliefootball.org.nz) and click on the appropriate link for your phone. CLUBROOMS RENOVATIONS From next week the clubrooms will be closed for about 4 weeks as the council work on updating the look from 1970’s to a more modern and clean look – this will mean new carpet, new light fittings and a complete remodel in the bathrooms and the kitchen. While it’s inconvenient to have the clubrooms closed we look forward to reopening with our new clubrooms and kitchen alongside our new bar fridge and beer taps that were recently installed – exciting times! Food will be available on match days from the canteen run by the 15 th Grade players and parents and we are investigating on running food and soft drinks out of the canteen on Thursdays as well for after training. Contact us via email (chairman@ellersliefootball.org.nz) for more info

EDITORS COMMENTS Last time out we focused on school football vs club football in Auckland – a hot topic indeed (click here to read that article) – this time we are going to focus on something a little further from home. Hyundai A-League – who would like to see an Auckland Team? If you are a regular reader of the yellow fever forum you will more than likely realise this topic has been well discussed, and while there are a few anti-Aucklanders popping up the general consensus is that an Auckland A-League team would actually help the Phoenix and in term the Phoenix would help the Auckland side. So is it a good idea? People will point mostly to Auckland’s previous attempts at an A-League side (The Kingz and the Knights) as failures both on and off the field – while that’s not entirely wrong in my opinion it’s a slightly different market now, but any future Auckland based sides need to learn the lessons of their predecessors – and here they are in my humble opinion: Name/Identity Needs to be simple and football like – an Auckland FC for example does the job without any pizazz – if a clever name like the Phoenix can be worked into the name without being cheesy (ie Melbourne Heart…) then go for it! A real risk vs reward scenario. Location, Location, Location More than anything the new franchise would need to be very careful with where they play in Auckland, I would steer clear of North Harbour, Eden Park and Mt Smart as default home stadiums as they are all too big for a startup franchise. Learn a lesson from the Breakers and create an intimate home ground and test the waters for big games (ie against the Nix) at one of the aforementioned bigger stadiums. Candidates for a home ground would be Mt Smart # 2, Bill McKinley Park or Ngahue Reserve (all three would need some development) – but this simply can’t be done wrong for the new franchisee to be a success. Engagement Auckland like Wellington offers a very concentrated grouping of clubs in it’s inner suburbs – It’s crucial that any new franchise engages with these grassroots clubs just like the Nix have done in Wellington – I don’t think the Kingz/ Knights did badly here but their poor choices of location and name/identity effected the outcome. Players With Auckland now fielding 3 national league teams from the coming ASBP season and room for another one in the future sometime we know the depth of players is available in Auckland and while they may not be up to A-League level straight away – there needs to be a pathway from Grassroots to ASBP to A-League – and I’m not just talking about Kiwi players as we have witnessed with the progression of Krishna, Riera etc. Rivalry The new franchise could finish last but if they can establish a fierce rivalry onfield with the Phoenix it would help both franchises. Fans will come and watch during the season if the football is good but as soon as results drop attendances will suffer – but for a Auckland v Wellington grudge match – as long as the Auckland side isn’t destroyed – that’s an attendance goldmine. Right – so that’s my thoughts, feel free to send us yours at chairman@ellersliefootball.org.nz Next issue we will close off the season as we discuss the ASBP and the addition of Eastern Suburbs to the league and what that means for us!

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW METRO FC vs HIBISCUS COAST Phyllis Street @ 7:30pm (Friday) Friday night brings us a midtable clash with 5th hosting 7th but with a whopping 8 points in between the two sides – Hibiscus are coming off a good result against promotion chasers North Shore last week but Metro FC were humbled at Centre Park by Mangere – so what does that all mean? TIP: Metro are in last chance saloon for a promotion spot I reckon, they need points here or a collapse from Shore and MAP in the coming weeks... which could happen. NORTH SHORE UTD vs MT ALBERT PONSONBY The Hill @ 3pm Battle for second place comes to a head in this fixture as the two favourites for the 2nd premier league spot face off at the Hill – Manurewa will want to throw their hit into the ring but the short favourites are these two. Both teams approach their games in different ways with Shore the highest scoring side in the comp and MAP with the 2nd best defence. TIP: Can see a stalemate – 1-1 MANUREWA AFC vs PAPAKURA CITY Memorial @ 3pm There hasn’t been a South Auckland derby with as much riding on it as this one for a while – Manurewa desperately want the points to stay in the promotion hunt and equally Papakura want the points to make sure they stay out of the bottom 2 – could be a classic on what will be a poor Memorial Park surface. TIP: If the game isn’t postponed Rewa to take the points ORATIA UTD vs MANGERE UTD Parrs @ 3pm Both teams sit in the bottom 4 and while relegation looks likely for Mangere they have picked up points in the last couple of weeks so it’s not beyond the realms of belief that they could survive – Oratia are plodding along and picking up points throughout the season but they have some tough games in their run home. TIP: Mangere are not that bad a side and should probably be in midtable if they could do admin properly – will grab 3 points here
ELLERSLIE AFC vs WAITAKERE CITY The Ave @ 5pm If Jeremy Ruane’s tweet was accurate if Waitak win this one they can’t be caught for promotion – so there will be an extra spring in their step, Ellerslie on the other hand want to finish the season with wet sails so will want points here – not that they will want to be spoilers with a few ex-Ellerslie players in the away team. TIP: Probably a Waitak win FRANKLIN UTD

WAITAKERE CITY
MATCH REPORT Scene: Anderson Park, Preston Ave, Mt Albert Date: 15th July 2016 Time: 7pm till late (especially if your keys get hidden and you get parked in) Cast: Mt Albert Ponsonby and Ellerslie AFC Background: MAP were hosting this round 17 clash sitting in 3rd place, some 4 points clear visitors Ellerslie AFC who sat in 6th place. MAP had notched up 3 wins and 1 draw (and a bye) in their last 5 games so came into this clash in good form – Ellerslie also came into this game with some form behind them with 4 wins and a draw in their last 5 games. Those stats don’t really tell the full story as the last 5 games for Ellerslie with the exception of Manurewa were all against teams from the bottom half of the table. Prologue: Travel is always a factor when playing MAP at 7pm on a Friday night – not that it’s MAP fault they do want to play at 7:30pm but they are denied by a resource consent restriction on their lights – something they tell me they are working on to resolve. With the added complication of the main arterial road from Ellerslie to MAP (Campbell Road) being partially closed – travel time was unfortunately a factor. Ellerslie made a few changes to the team from last time out – Art and Dylan were both unavailable so Alex slotted back in upfront and Griffin made his starting debut at right back. First Act: The starring role in the first half went to mother nature as she absolutely shat on us during the first 45 mins – it was so heavy that we couldn’t see the clubrooms from the dugouts and obviously from the clubrooms deck visibility wasn’t so great either. Jason Mann: “At one point MAP gave away a free kick for an offside and I looked up to see where the AR was standing so I could line-up the ball but I couldn’t seem him – I had to wonder how he called the offside in the first place” It didn’t just effect the players as we struggled with our normal technical toys, rain not being the best of friends to both ipads and smartphones alike. Kris Pinnock learned this lesson as he gave up tagging the game on Chris Wallace’s apparently waterproof phone – hopefully there was no permanent damage. The other notable scene in this act was when MAP opened the scoring in the 11th minute – a decent move that shifted our right back up and in so they could exploit the space in-behind. Cover defence came across and just couldn’t quite deny the strike on goal, although we did get a small touch on the shot as did Jason before it hit net. At the intermission we waded back into the changing room – from the field, through the mini lake outside the changing room and into the sanctuary of the sheds. While the fans were refreshing themselves on beer and hot food the lads talked about how we had moved the ball well in midfield, and how we needed to be a little tighter on defence and needed a little more movement upfront. Second Act: Another MAP goal was the early lead in terms of second act drama – an unlucky block on Seb’s clearance meant the ball fell straight to the MAP striker who shimmied past Ryan to open up a shot – a shot which Jason was able to get a hand to but due to the proximity of the shooter was unable to keep it out. MAP were efficient and workman like in their approach, that’s not meant to be a disservice to them because I thought
24
they were good, just often unspectacular. Their flair often came from Dylan Tate who had been kept pretty quiet in the first act by Christian but was finding a little more space on our right against Griffin – the real glue came from their skipper Peter Wild who held the ball up well, chased hard and linked play like a veteran. Ellerslie always seemed to have good periods of play in the midfield, Martin Pike racked up the nutmegs in the slippery conditions and Callum Waters was hard to stop both with and without the ball with his powerful runs foward. It was a combination of those two that lead to our goal, Callum finishing it off with a great back post header for his 5th goal of the season. There was a brief altercation between the MAP GK and the Ellerslie players immediately following Callum’s goal – I’m not sure if there was more than meets the eye but the MAP GK was yellow carded for his involvement in the scuffle. That was one of very few mistakes from the custodian as he produced at least 3 world level saves during the game – he may have even breathed heavily enough at Martin Pikes first half effort to force it to smack into the post from some way out – Martin seemed to think so. So as the final curtain fell we had one last chance for drama as Jason raced up from the back to get on the end of a Ryan O’Sullivan free kick and he almost got on the end of the second phase but MAP were able to clean it up and the final whistle was blown as the curtains drew closed. So our first loss in 6 games but we played well against a well drilled and compact opposition in pretty awful conditions – focus can now turn to Waitakere City at Fortress Michaels Ave next weekend – a win to the visitors would clinch them promotion with 5 games to spare so plenty of motivation for the Ellerslie lads to play the spoiler card.
