PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
ELLERSLIE VS WAIUKU
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Hi everyone and welcome to another Super Saturday at Michaels Ave – today see’s us host our friends from down south Waiuku AFC for both First Team and Reserves clashes while we also host Papatoetoe AFC in a Reserves fixture as well. It’s not rare to see Jim, Derek and their team at Michaels Ave, we have played them in preseason every year for the last 4 odd years, this year included. We also faced them last season at Michaels Ave in the Chatham Cup which was the first ever meeting of our two sides in Cup action. Waiuku have come off a good cup win down in Matamata (against our friends the Swifts) last weekend and will want to continue that and take points tonight off Chris and his side.
We have also come off a cup win, on a pretty substandard pitch at Eastdale Reserve against Cup newcomers AUT FC – whilst the score line didn’t reflect our dominance we were happy with our days work and can come into this key fixture on the back of some better work than our previous three league games. It’s kind of a crossroads for us with the next two games, there are points here for us if we want them, it’s up to us to show we want them more than the opposition. We saw an interesting quote from another NRFL player – Hibiscus Coast GK John Fletcher – he said that consistency isn’t a hallmark of this division and that two thirds of remaining games will be won by the team who wants it more – that’s bang on as far as I am concerned and it’s something we need to be mindful of. Our two reserves sides have interesting battles on their hands this weekend as well – Fred and Dave’s Div 1 side have battled through some poor form and come out the other side a strong team – will they have enough in the tank against a plucky Waiuku side? On the other hand Ben and Glen’s Div 2 side face the side just below them in 2nd place in Papatoetoe AFC, this looks to be an excellent test of this sides 2015 vintage after losing the bulk of their 2014 winning side - but this years side have talent of their own and will be looking to make themselves comfortable at the top if they can get three points this weekend. Our Women’s First Team have struck a resurgence and have banked two 3-0 wins in the past two weeks – they look to make it three wins on the run against Birkenhead on Sunday at Shepherds Park at 1pm. On another note it’s about to enter the wet season and whilst we are lucky we have the turf we as club members need to be careful of our usage on fields like Simson Reserve and Liston Park as we will need them later in the season! After the final whistle come up to the club and enjoy some Wild Buck on Tap and some great hot food from Joyce in the kitchen! Cheers Tim Adams FRONT COVER: Thirds Assistant Coach Glen Jones on the ball BACK COVER: Ross rises higher than the North Force player

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW Round 9 Forrest Hill Milford vs Hibicus Coast Becroft Park @ 2:45pm Conflicting performances in the cup but at the end of the day both sides are through to the next round - FHM drew a derby game against Albany but they will want something out of this all NFF clash as well. Coast have been up and down this season and will want to bank points here to keep in touch with the top group and overtake FHM. PREDICTION: the table points to a tough game with maybe FHM the edge, I'm picking a 2-1 win to the David Mulligan coached side Ngraruawahia vs Mt Albert Ponsonby Centennial Park @ 2:45 Having met last week in the cup and seen MAP take the win Narra will want to bounce back and take some points in what is a bottom half of the table contest. MAP are in good form and are unbeaten in their last four games (Tauranga, Waiuku, Ellerslie and Narra) so will fancy themselves for the points. PREDICTION: MAP too much bottle for Narra - it will be closer than it was in the cup - 3-1 my pick Manurewa vs Mangere Memorial Park @ 2:45pm A South Auckland derby is one of the headline acts in this weekends round - Rewa are looking desperate for points and will want to punish a Mangere side which has often promised much but delivered little. They are also without Ernesto Lopez who has transferred to ECB and that seriously diminishes their goalscoring threat. PREDICITION: Games featuring Mangere always have goals (5.63 per game) but Rewa have only scored 3 times in 7 games, 2-0 to Mangere Takapuna vs North Shore Taharoto Park @ 2:45pm Another NFF derby - this one throws close neighbours Taka and Shore into battle - looking at the table that's where the closeness ends with Shore up top and Taka falling to 3rd to bottom. Scoring goals doesn't seem to be too much of an issue for Taka but defensively they have given away more than the two sides below them, Shore on the other hand have the best attacking and best defensive record but were a little shaky last time out against Metro. PREDICTION: Can't see Shore giving up this one - 3-1 win. Metro vs Tauranga Phyllis Street @ 3pm The home team continue to be a surprise package, battling performances in most of their games this season show a good team spirit is alive at well at Phyllis Street, however the loss of their captain to a red card (for a headbut) will not help their chances against the physical but skilful BOP side. PREDICTION: Not sure about Tauranga's away record in recent weeks, i'm picking an upset here 2-2. Ellerslie vs Waiuku Michaels Ave @ 6pm A tricky test for Chris Wallace and his team - Waiuku are a club which has a good relationship with Ellerslie over the past 5 years - but this will be a little different with league points on the line. Waiuku had a tough first couple of games but have bounced back recently and look dangerous. Ellerslie have done the opposite with a red hot start and then stumbled in their last three games 6 points seperate the sides on the table but the match will be much closer than that. PREDICTION: There are a few factors that i believe favour the home side, just ! it could go either way but i'm picking 2-1 to the Red, Black and Gold.

WHEN BIRKENHEAD COME TO TOWN So as you can see from 10 games we have: 1 Win 1 Draw 1 Draw lost on Pen's (clutching at straws here) 7 losses It's a pretty one sided record - but a closer look at the results shows apart from a couple of blowouts we have been in most contests and this is what we need to focus on heading into this game because if there is one thing we know about Birkenhead is they play every minute of every game - it's not in their DNA to let up and it's something we need to learn! That and if Wazza wanted to strap on the boots we would welcome him! FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT The beauty of cup football is it doesn’t matter if you win by 1 (Hibiscus Coast vs Otumotei) or by 10 (FHM vs Kerikeri) you are in the hat for the next round – and that has to be the goal at the beginning of any cup game. Looking at performance is tough – the opponents are often either unknown or play slightly different to how you would normally see them play due to the nature of smash and grab cup football. The venues and particularly in our case on Sunday are often substandard, the facilities are off putting and the referee’s are um different. All that leads to a real problem when trying to measure performance against a league game. If I was to give us a rating from yesterday I would probably lean towards the higher end, based on a couple of factors. 1 – Result – we got it, they didn’t! 2 – Exposure – We were able to get some valuable minutes into some players who have either been fringe or coming back from injury this year – this is massively valuable for the squad going forward 3 – Issues – even by a team several divisions below us we had some issues that we have struggled to deal with in previous games – this is a good thing as we know it’s a real area we need to concentrate on. 4 – no injuries or suspensions, Jordy took a slight knock I know but by and large no issues with injury and not a yellow card in sight – that’s great news. 5 – Goals – there were some well constructed open play goals, sure there were some we missed but we got enough to get the result and that’s what matters. 6 – Got it done in regulation time – we didn’t have to put extra minutes into players with extra time – so that’s another point in the positive column. So after all that – what is the mark out of 10? I am going for a solid 7 – I think had finishing been a little better we could have banked an 8 – but considering all the above factors this was a pretty handy Sunday afternoons work. Milestones – Obviously a First Team debut and a goal to boot for Connor Watts is a massive highlight! Tim Richardson’s two strikes through the middle of the game made it a bit easier for us – I may be wrong but I think this is the first time the former u20 All White has scored a double for the club Seb Poelman locked in his first start for the First Team Monju banked his first minutes of first team action this season with a second half appearance off the bench So in summary congrats and let’s hope for a home draw next round of the cup! (not Glenfield)
