Welcome

2017 looks like a bumper year. When we started this guide, we covered 300 events - now you will find over 600 events for the East Coast alone - we’re a very busy coastline. This guide is all about using the whole coast in as many different ways we can think of: open water swimming, foraged foodstuffs, Stand Up Paddleboarding and sailing from foiling catamarans to the annual smack races. It’s all in here.

CONTACTS

Thank you to the clubs who supply so many of the event details, and the advertisers who keep this little publication going every year.

Now, everyone says, Ohh - look at our website or follow us on social media, but in our case it’s worth it! All the events are regularly updated, including changes to dates and times so it’s worth checking there first, but there is so much more to see, read and do that simply wont fit in 100 pages including area guides, more book and kit reviews and special offers through our advertising friends. And you can download the free Coastal App for your iPhone and Android from here too. Do you want to get involved? We always need fresh content for the guide and the website, and encourage all submissions including writing, photography and illustrations. Please get in touch if you have an interesting story, or something you’d like us to write about. Thank you Tim & Gill

News from around the coast Suffolk Yacht Harbour marks 50th anniversary The east coast’s largest independent marina welcomes two new on-site businesses and continues investment in its facilities From flooded farmland in 1967 to the east coast’s largest privately-owned marina, Suffolk Yacht Harbour (SYH) on the River Orwell has come a long way in the last 50 years. SYH managing director Jonathan Dyke comments, “Since Suffolk Yacht Harbour was founded in 1967, the marina has grown from 12 acres and 40 berths to a 550-berth yachting hub receiving over 3,000 local and visiting yachtsmen each year.” Jonathan adds, “The site has changed significantly in 50 years and we have enjoyed several ‘milestone moments;’ from TV presenter Griff Rhys Jones opening the Harbour Centre to appearing on BBC’s Countryfile for our work with the local environment. “We are continuing to invest to ensure we maintain high quality facilities and services for berth holders and marina users. This year, we are delighted to welcome two new on-site businesses and look forward to unveiling our refurbished shower block facilities in the spring.” Adding to its existing partner businesses, Suffolk Yacht Harbour welcomes Evolution

Rigging and Seapower Marine Electronics to the site this year. With twelve marine companies now based at Suffolk Yacht Harbour, the marina offers a full ‘one-stop shop’ for both sailing and motor yacht maintenance and requirements on the east coast. Due to be completed in March 2017, the shower block refurbishment represents a significant investment. The project involves the demolition of everything but the current walls, which will be raised to facilitate a vaulted ceiling to allow maximum light and ventilation. The spacious new building will house individual wet and dry areas, as well as under floor heating, LED lighting and modern fittings. Suffolk will also host this year’s 17th annual Classic Regatta on 17th-18th June, which is the largest event of its kind for classic yachts on the east coast.

Fox’s Marina & Boatyard celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. The business has come a long way since it’s early beginnings in the 1920’s, when Charlie Fox started out making sailing dinghies in a shed on the banks of the River Orwell in Ipswich. It’s unlikely that Charlie Fox could have foreseen that the name he gave his fledgling business nearly a century ago would be recognised today as one of the UK’s most established and respected yacht refit and repair yards.

Sustainable deliveries on the East coast On Saturday 6th May the Coastal Exploration Company will set sail from Wells-Next-the-Sea on a journey to Norwich via Gt Yarmouth in their 1950’s Whelk boat, ‘Salford’. The journey is a foray into sustainable delivery, using sail and the power of the wind to carry local cargo around the coast. On the outward journey Salford will carry a consignment of Norfolk Grey Seal coffee and Saffron which will be exchanged in the city for a return cargo of Norfolk Gin and our very own Coastal Guides. These will be delivered to Wells, Morston, Burnham Overy and Thornham. The trip is the brainchild of Henry Chamberlain, the owner of the Coastal Exploration Company who explained his ambitions for the voyage. ‘We are hoping to re-establish one of Norfolk’s coastal trading routes in an attempt to offer an environmentally friendly method of delivering cargo, and in doing so investing in our own future’. From Great Yarmouth to Norwich and back Henry will be accompanied by clients from the Purfleet Trust, supported by Wells Coastal Communities Team. They will be joining the journey as part of the crew and hopefully gaining a positive life affirming experience along the way. When not delivering cargo the Coastal

Exploration Company undertakes bespoke adventures around the North Norfolk Coast in a range of traditional fishing boats. Exploring the creeks and backwaters under sail guests can discover parts of the coast only accessible by boat. Trips can be combined with good old fashioned adventure, fishing, foraging for seafood and samphire, swimming and wild camping - the aim is to create that special connection with the natural environment in a way that wouldn’t ordinarily be possible. Mersea Week Mersea Week is an extremely popular sailing regatta organised jointly by West Mersea Yacht Club and the Dabchicks sailing club on Mersea Island in Essex. It is a ‘family and friends’-oriented week and welcomes entrants and sailors from near and far. The sheltered waters of the River Blackwater provide perfect conditions and space to run daily racing with expert race management and courses for all. The week includes many traditions, not least the ‘Round the Island Race’, (Mersea Island), for the coveted Coconut Trophy. This race is for dinghies only and this year is on 23rd August.

&

Regattas

festivals

With an organising committee that has many years of experience and expertise in race management, the event is steadily increasing in popularity. Last year there was a record entry of nearly 200 vessels, coming from many different UK clubs, travelling far and wide to take part. The boats ranged from dinghies and ancient fishing smacks, to classic historic sailing craft, with appropriate courses for all. The week will conclude with a spectacular firework finish. www.merseaweek.org

Burnham Week Burnham Week is arguably the longest running annual yacht regatta on the mainland of the UK and this year it celebrates its 125th Anniversary. There is much planned to make this an extra special event including the possibility of a Royal visit during the week. The event which runs from Saturday 27th August to Saturday 2nd September is broken down into two separate regattas; one over the Bank Holiday weekend and the other taking place mid week with the final Saturday hosting the famous Town Cup Race. On the water Burnham Week 2017 will include classes for Multihulls, IRC, Local Handicaps 5 and 6, Squibs, Royal Burnham One Design, Royal Corinthian One Design, Ospreys, Phantoms, Finn Class and Dinghies. Any new classes wanting to enter will be most welcome. Social events including Cocktail Parties, Dinners, Prize Giving Ceremonies, BBQs and entertainment back up the full programme. This years event coincides with the Bank Holiday Monday Quay Day which last year attracted thousands of visitors and is a fun day for everyone. Competitors can enter for the whole 8 days or any part of the week they wish. Burnham Week supports the RNLI and during the week funds are also raised to support the local Air Ambulance. www.burnhamweek.org 12

Norfolk Oyster & Gypsy Regatta The Norfolk Oyster has been an iconic boat of the North Norfolk coast for over 25 years. Nearly 150 of the perennially-popular clinkerstyle GRP 17-footers are out there sailing. Neil Thompson has been building them for 19 of those years – first for the dinghy’s originator Charlie Ward, and since Charlie’s retirement in 2006 under his own name. The 20ft Norfolk Gypsy pocket cruiser is nearly as popular, with over 125 built, and there are other options in the range – the 13ft Urchin, the 25ft Smuggler and recently the Oyster-based motor launch Explorer. Neil, with his wife Richenda and their team build and maintain them (and run a brokerage for them) at their farm-based boatyard in Glandford, a few miles inland from Blakeney – it’s an attractive destination in itself, with tea and cakes at the little café next door a must. A few years ago they had the idea of running a regatta for the boats – many of which are kept and sailed in local waters. It’s now become a permanent calendar fixture, and a familyfriendly one offering a great days sailing

followed by fish and chip supper at The Anchor Pub. Norfolk Oyster and Norfolk Gypsy Worlds regatta will be held on Friday 28th July and Saturday 29th July 2017 www.neilthompsonboats.co.uk

Thames Smack and Barge races

The tradition of racing Thames barges on the East Coast goes back to 1863 when the need to move cargo around at speed was essential if the barges were to compete effectively with the advent of steam powered transport. Henry Dodd, a wealthy businessman, introduced the idea of a barge races to encourage the building of faster and more effective vessels. This tradition of racing is still alive today with a series of barge and smack matches scheduled along the Kent, Essex and Suffolk Coasts. These matches are organised by various committees and clubs under the coordination of the Sailing Barge Association. Points are awarded for each race and added together to determine the champion for the year. If you would like to watch a barge race there are some good on land vantage points for many of the matches or if you would like to view from the water Topsail Charters and Sailing Barge Victor run barge trips to several of the events. If you have never seen these gorgeous old vessels racing you really should try and get to your local match, it is well worth it. www.sailingbargeassociation.co.uk

Environment

taking care of our coastline

M

arine litter is becoming a major problem nationally with the occurrence of plastics being the greatest cause for concern. If you have ever walked the beach after a storm or a high tide it is sadly something you cannot escape. Plastic bottles, plastic netting, plastic bags, are common finds along the strand line. Alarmingly plastic is now the most commonly found element in the ocean with estimates of 46,000 pieces of plastic floating in every square mile of ocean.

Scheduled beach cleans in the east include: 29th April, Sea Palling 12 midday 7th May, Mundesley 11 am 11th May, Happisburgh 4pm 14th May, Old Hunstanton Beach 10.30am 20th May, Sea Palling 10am 17th June, Mundesley 2pm 18 June, Jubilee Beach, Southend 10am 2nd July, Sea Palling 10am 16th July, Old Hunstanton Beach 10.30am 17 Sept, Jubilee Beach, Southend 10:00am 17 Dec, Jubilee Beach, Southend 10:00am

This is a disaster for the natural environment because unlike other materials it does not break down easily or quickly, in fact every single piece of plastic that was ever made is still in existence. It is also highly toxic to marine life. Over 100,000 marine mammals and over 1 million seabirds die every year from ingestion of and entanglement in marine litter.

Of course it is not always possible or convenient to join an organised beach clean, but that doesn’t mean we can’t help and do something positive for our local beach. If you need some inspiration then look no further than Martin Dorey and Tab Parry who in 2009 set up the Beach Clean Network, a not for profit organisation which encourages beach cleaning around the UK 2 minutes at a time.

Beachwatch is the national beach cleaning and litter surveying programme organised by the Marine Conservation Society MCS With MCS beach cleans throughout the year there are plenty of opportunities to help out. To find your nearest MCS beach clean see www.mcsuk.org

26

Whilst this may seem insignificant Martin believes that every piece of litter removed from the beach reduces the scale of the problem, so it doesn’t matter if you do 2 minutes or 30 its all good. To find out more about the Beach Clean Network and the hashtag 2minutebeachclean see beachclean.net

Sea watch Caring for our coastal environment is not all about picking up litter, there are other ways to get involved. The Sea Watch Foundation is a national marine environmental charity working to improve the conservation of whales, dolphins and porpoises in the seas around Britain and Ireland. It aims to raise awareness of marine mammals and the threats they face by educating and involving the public in activities and scientific monitoring. Ever year the Sea Watch Foundation runs a National Whale and Dolphin watch, with the aim of generating a “snapshot” of what is in UK coastal waters and to raise awareness of the diversity of species that can be found here. It is free to take part and is open to all. The 2017 National Whale and Dolphin watch takes place all round the UK coastline from 29th July – 6th August. www.seawatchfoundation.org.uk

of crustaceans, blue mussel beds, over 30 species of sea slug, many different fish species including Atlantic cod, ballan wrasse, corkwing wrasse, flounder, goldsinny, pollack, rock cook and seabass as well as larger species including harbour porpoises, and grey and harbour seals. The reef is a diverse and vibrant habitat full of amazing wildlife, yet few of us will ever get to see it. Cromer’s famous pier enables visitors to walk out above the chalk although you might not realise what is actually beneath you. The legs of the pier form an artificial reef which leads to the real thing. Wildlife is always nearby, just not always visible. There are currently 50 designated marine conservations zones around the UK with more planned for 2017-18. Potential new areas include Orford Inshore, Kentish Knock East and the Thames Estuary. For more information on the Cromer Chalk reef and the other potential East Coast sites see www.wildlifetrusts.org/mczs If you would like to learn to dive or would like to join a dive club and explore the Norfolk Coast with other divers the following clubs are available in Norfolk:

Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds Marine Conservation Zone In January 2016 a unique area of our Norfolk coastline 200m off shore was given special marine protection. The area which stretches from Weybourrne to Happisborough comprises a chalk reef, thought to be the largest in Europe. Made up of boulders, stacks and arches the reef harbours an amazing abundance of marine life and provides a home for many species of sponges and seaweeds. These in turn support large communities

North Norfolk Divers are a club which runs an active dive program between April - October. They also offer try dive lessons and training and welcome new members from experienced divers to complete beginners. www.northnorfolkdivers.co.uk Anglian Divers are a friendly scuba diving club based in Norwich, but with members from across East Anglia. They cater for beginners as well as advanced divers and carry out shore and boat diving off the Norfolk Norfolk coast. www.angliandivers.co.uk

Small Spotted Catsharks If you love rooting around on the stand line for hidden treasure then why not put your enthusiasm to good use and take part in an eggcase hunt. It’s a bit like an Easter Egg hunt but instead of chocolate you are searching for the egg cases of skate, rays and tiny sharks. In recent years the numbers of these species in British waters have dramatically declined and the Shark Trust are asking for help to establish a picture of the current state to the UK populations. The pressence of egg cases on the beach give a good indication to the types of skate, rays and cat sharks that occur around the coast. If you would like to get involved just visit your local beach, walk along the stand line and pay particular attention to mounds of washed up seaweed as this is where you are most likely to find the egg cases. Arthur Ransome Pin Mill Jamboree For those of us who grew up with the Swallows and Amazons books, wishing we could sail away on a carefree adventure, the East Coast is a special place. It is the setting for two of Arthur Ransome’s books - We Didn’t Mean to Go to Sea and Secret Water and it was also a place where Ransome himself loved to sail. It seems that the passage of time has had little effect on this part of the coast. Alma Cottage at Pin Mill, the fictional holiday home of the Walker children still looks as pretty today as it was described in the books and if you look at Ransome’s sketches of Pin Mill you will find that little has changed. This year is the 80th anniversary of the publication of We Didn’t Mean to Go to Sea and the 50th anniversary of Ransome’s death. To mark these occasions there are a series of events and projects planned for the year starting off with the Pin Mill Arthur Ransome Jamboree on the13th May. This will take the form of a 30’s style fete with fun activities for the whole family on the village green and a series of talks in the sailing club. Nancy Blackett, the yacht Ransome owned when he lived in the area, and which became the ‘Goblin’ in We Didn’t Mean to Go to Sea, will be at the centre of the celebrations and will be moored at the end of the new pontoon on the waterfront. On the 4th June Nancy Blackett will set sail for Holland in a recreation of the fictional voyage made by the Goblin. She will depart from the Royal Harwich Yacht Club and will be accompanied along the River Orwell by a 30

flotilla of yachts and boats. The organisers are keen for as many boats as possible to join in so if you would like to be part of the flotilla please register in advance by emailing: office.manager@royalharwich.co.uk For those who can’t join in the celebrations on the water a new walking route with signs and interpretation boards has been established along the banks of the Orwell. The six mile Arthur Ransome Trail runs from the Butt and Oyster at Pin Mill to the Bristol Arms at Shotley and follows the passage of the Goblin in chapter 4 of ‘We Didn’t Mean To Go To Sea’. All the celebrations are being organised by the local community council with support from the Pin Mill Sailing Club Social and The Pin Mill Studio. Also involved are members of the Arthur Ransome Society and the Nancy Blackett Trust. For more information on any of the events planned for 2017 please see nancyblackett.org

Training boost for Burnham Coastal Rowing Burnham-on-Crouch Coastal Rowing Club are delighted to have been awarded funding from the Magnox Socioeconomic Scheme which will go towards essential coaching courses and a launching trolley. The £2,200 grant will be used to set up a new development training programme to encourage people of all ages and abilities from the community to become more active. Club chairman Dawn Wood explained the motivation behind the programme ‘Over the years of being involved with the club we have spoken to many members of the community and it has become clear that many of them have never been out on the water despite Burnham on Crouch being famous for its sailing and the river being the main focus of the town. Many people think that waterborne activities are expensive and beyond their means. By hosting open days at the rowing club and encouraging people to try rowing we are able to demonstrate that anyone can become involved in a club that has a high quality of training and equipment for very little cost. ‘ Dawn has recently qualified with British rowing to teach man over board, and is an established first aid and RYA instructor. She plans to run courses for members improving safety not only during rowing activities but on the water in general.

Part of the clubs structured training programme will be dedicate sessions for younger people age 14-18. These will provide opportunities to train together and enable instructors to concentrate on their specific requirements, hopefully building a solid youth contingent within the club. The training programme will include leisure rowing, competitive rowing, coaching sessions, safety training, first aid, Navigation, seamanship and social meetings. All members of the club will be encouraged to take part in this project no matter what their experience or ability. Rowing and theory sessions will take place every Thursday evening and Sunday morning lasting a minimum of one hour depending on the type of session. The programme has been designed by Dawn Wood and sessions will be delivered by Dawn, Jaime Wood (Men’s captain) and Bridie Hughes (Ladies captain). All three members will be sent on British Rowing coaching courses. In just under 3 months Burnham on Crouch rowing club has achieved a huge amount having secured funding towards their project from Sport England, Magnox and the Burnham on Crouch Carnival committee. Club members have also committed to funding the project by taking part in sponsored events, fundraising dinners and organising rowing race events. boccrc.teamapp.com

Come on in...

the water’s freezing

Jodi Whitby describes the appeal of open water swimming 34

“MAD!

You are bloody What is

G N O WR

with you!?

Their cries grow distant as the icy water laps higher around my thighs, pulling me deeper and deeper. The sound of my own sharp breathing engulfing my ears as my body surrenders to the swelling sea. Then, overwhelmed by a wave of peacefulness, time stands still and I am acutely aware of every living cell in my body. It is then, in this moment, that everything is RIGHT with me. I have always swum, always had a fascination with water. My dad pulled me from a rock pool when I was barely 18 months old. I had wanted to see the fish but, being so young, didn’t appreciate the technicalities of breathing underwater, or not. Poor dad! But still, approaching my half century, I continue to be drawn to the glistening, undulating and seemingly endless journeys of rivers, lakes, lidos and seas...and I’m certainly not alone with such urges. According to the UK based Outdoor Swimming Society, its membership numbers have risen to a staggering 25000 since being founded in 2006. That’s a lot of people getting their kit off to plunge into open, often incredibly cold, water throughout the year. There’s gotta be something in it, right? But before we all jump headlong into the nearest lagoon, there is a lot to consider, most importantly regarding safety - you can’t and shouldn’t just swim anywhere. There is an element of risk and it’s the swimmer’s responsibility to research

local information fully: tides, lifeguards, even sewage outfall; it’s your job to do your homework before you go in. The Internet is full of such crucial information and people whose brains you can pick for more. Highly recommended is the Outdoor Swimming Society website. The OSS aims to represent the interests of all the different kinds of outdoor swimmer by providing inspiration, connection and community. It’s teeming with guidance for novices through to the seasoned swimmer. There’s information on where to swim and about events, tips on safety and a host of other aspects such as what to wear - or not. It’s Facebook page is a perfect place to connect people, share projects, websites, advice, photos, videos, stories, experiences and ideas. I didn’t know it existed until the swimming bug caught me. Other swimmers recounts can be fascinating, sometimes shocking but most, I find, are poetic. I guess the most common question people ask is: “How can you cope getting into cold water?” - well that’s a polite version of their question. It takes time. It’s best to acclimatise by getting regular swimming exposure weekly, daily if possible. The more you do it, even if only briefly, the more you’ll improve your tolerance. That said, I’ve experienced feeling very peculiar after staying in only the merest of minutes too long - it’s not a good feeling and one I’m always vigilant to avoid repeating. It can be scary for you and those around you. As we know, when it comes to water - she’s the boss! So what drives this compulsion, this passion, this madness? Good question. At the time of writing it’s a bleak late February afternoon and my swim buddy is urgently texting me to arrange a meetup. Every week we drive 30 minutes to the West Sussex coast and wade in. It all started back in the summer as swim training sessions for triathlons; we genuinely didn’t set out to keep swimming 35

throughout autumn...and then winter. But every week it excitedly drew us back despite the falling mercury - something was happening, something good and we felt it. In the recent coldest weeks we’ve forgone swim training sessions, preferring instead to bob about, and laugh loudly. We’ve also been known to burst into impromptu song, thankfully this doesn’t happen often. It’s become our escape; two self-employed women with all the responsibilities of mothering seven children between us. Indeed, the car journey to the sea is often a lighthearted therapy session during which we confide our concerns for our children, schooling, work, life, the universe… Modern living can be full-on and often we conclude that we really don’t have the time to strip off and head into the tide, but we still do. I think we’ve learnt that we absolutely need to. Once we’re in that cold, oh so cold water, we marvel at the

changing colours of land, sea and sky. It’s effortless to drift on that sparkling path of reflected sunlight, guiding us home to some far-off imagined utopia. Floating away momentarily we look back at the shoreline, back at our land-locked lives and something magical happens - we are released from the dogma, our primal sense of existence is heightened and truly we feel ALIVE. Jodi Whitby is an artist and forest school leader. For further information or to contact Jodi please visit www.jodiwhitby.co.uk Felixstowe Swimscapes is a friendly, open and free group of open water swimmers. Not so much a club as there are no joining fees it is really a group of like minded people meeting up for a swim. It is open to all ages and abilities. Felixstowe Swimscapes was set up in 2012 by local sea swimmer and coach Seamus Bennett and now has well over 400 members. The group swims all year round and meets on Saturday mornings at 10:30 at beach hut 207 Undercliff Rd East, IP11 7LS. In the summer the group meets at 6pm on Mondays. Felixstowe Swimscapes is a very supportive and informal group, and includes some very experienced sea swimmers as well as novices to the sport. f you are interested in going along for a swim please make contact via Swimscapes Facebook Page You should be able to swim quite confidently but speed isn’t important. Wetsuits are optional – the main thing is to look out for each other and enjoy the experience. For more information please see:

Ever So

Supple

Stand up Paddleboarding is a great way to explore the East Coasts creeks and tidal waterways. It is an activity that caters for all levels of fitness and enthusiasm from recreational to competitive paddlers. There are several SUP schools located along the East Coast and we caught up with Maldon based company Frangipani SUP to find out all about the sport. Frangipani SUP is a friendly, family run mobile stand up paddle board school, based in Maldon in Essex, which teaches people to use and enjoy stand up paddle boards in a safe and fun way. It is run by Anni Ridsdill Smith and her husband Mike and was set up in 2013. ‘As a family we learnt to SUP in Lanzarote with Christian Dias, after a friend of ours who ran a SUP school on the River Hamble kept nagging us to have a go! When we were first out and about paddling in Essex, people kept asking what we were doing and whether we could teach them. So we decided to become qualified and teach people safely and sensibly how to SUP and get out on the water.’ 40

Anni and her family live right on the banks of the Blackwater Estuary and treasure their time out in the landscape. ‘It is just spectacular where we live, the saltmarshes, estuarine landscape, flora and fauna and the pretty rivers that wind their way through the countryside are just amazing. It’s flat though, and muddy, but breathtakingly beautiful with sea birds and lovingly restored Thames Barges and fishing smacks sharing the water with dinghies, cruisers, rowing gigs and commercial vessels.’ From its beginnings in 2013 Frangipani SUP school has continued to grow each year and now offers a full seasonal calendar of Beginner and Progression sessions, on weekdays and weekends at different locations. Once people have mastered the basics they can join the popular Frangipani SUP HUB, a membership scheme for those who wish to paddle safely with others but who may not have their own kit. Frangipani SUP have 25 SUP boards of all different shapes and sizes for people to use, as well as a variety of paddles. During the winter months HUB members meet for the popular HUB in the PUB dinners and socials, with family members welcome.

As well as basic lessons Anni runs a weekday ladies group called the SUP Senoritas and Mike teaches SUPFit in the evenings. ‘We are a British Stand Up Paddle Association (BSUPA) approved school with a team of qualified Instructors and we run BSUPA ‘Ready to Tour’ and ‘Ready to Race’ courses, for those with a little more experience. We are delighted to have received Sport England ‘Sportivate’ funding and ‘This Girl Can’ funding, to attract 18-25 year olds and women and girls into the sport.’ Anna and Mike run Beginner and Progression lessons over a half day at weekends and also as a three week course on weekdays, MayOctober. ‘The first thing we do is to get you to sign the necessary paperwork and then we get you fitted out with a wetsuit, boots, buoyancy aid and high viz rash vest. Then we give your land safety briefing before taking you to the water’s edge where you will learn the basics of SUP on the land (much easier!) Once everyone has had a chance to practice the core skills on the land, we take you out onto the water to repeat everything very slowly (gets a bit more

wobbly!) Then it’s down to practice. It’s fair to say that falling off is totally acceptable and it’s part of the learning process. We call it the ‘Splash of Commitment!’ It is easier than it looks (honest!) and in our experience people can master the basics in a couple of hours. But like any sport, it takes a long time to develop a really good technique and cope with more challenging conditions.’ SUPFit was introduced in 2016 and is all about taking the exercise that you would normally do on land, onto the water. Mike is a fully qualified SUPFit instructor. He and his paddlers take their boards onto the lake, where they usually tether to small buoys and start a 45 minute program of exercise. It involves a core workout, balance, stretching and using the board, paddle and resistance bands within the exercise program. To take part it is important that SUPFitters have mastered the basics of paddling, such as stopping, turning and getting themselves back on their boards in case they fall off! Lowestoft Ferry

With her dark blue hull, immaculate varnish work and red ensign flying, Terrier, the Lowestoft Ferry, looks the picture of elegance. Running the length of Lake Lothing she provides a regular service throughout the summer months between Oulton Broad, the gateway to the Broads National Park and the seaside town of Lowestoft. Terrier is a gorgeous wooden 33’ harbour launch licensed to carry 12 passengers. Built by Hugh McLean, Yacht & Boatbuilders, at Renfrew in Scotland in 1954 Terrier worked for many years on the Clyde ferrying passengers and crew between vessels and undertaking towing work. When she finally retired after 70 years on the Scottish waterways, she was donated to the International Boatbuilding Training College (IBTC) and came to Suffolk in 2014 to be given a new lease of life. Funded by the Coastal Communities Fund and managed by the Shipshape Network of East Anglia Terrier underwent a full restoration from the keel upwards. The work was carried out by a team of shipwrights and trainees from the IBTC at Oulton Broad, a world renowned centre of excellence for traditional boatbuilding skills. The work took 10 months and was completed in June 2015 when Terrier was officially launched ready to begin her new life as the Lowestoft Water taxi. Following the Lowestoft Water Taxi’s first successful year in which the service won the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, Lowestoft & Waveney Local Tourism, Culture , Hospitality & Leisure Award for 2016, sponsored by Waveney District Council, it returns in 2017 as the Lowestoft Ferry. The journey from Oulton Broad to Heritage Quay at Lowestoft takes 30 minutes and provides a very different way to see the town from the water. Lake Lothing is a seawater lake believed to have been formed from medieval peat cutting. It is a diverse and fascinating place to explore from the water with plenty to see. The shore is dotted with 42

boatyards and boat builders, engineering works and industrial buildings and the water is full of fishing vessels and working boats. Docking at Heritage Quay all the amenities available at Lowestoft are easily accessible. The town, sandy beach, Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club and RNLI stations are all a short stroll away. On the return journey Terrier docks by Freshwater Way Footpath just a short walk from Nicholas Everitt Park, Mutford Lock and all the attractions of Oulton Broad. The Lowestoft Ferry operates from Easter to the end of September, 7 days a week during school holidays and Friday to Sunday at other times. She runs on an hourly service departing on the hour from Oulton Broad and on the half hour from Heritage Quay, Lowestoft. Tickets are £3.50 per person one way or £6 each return. Check the website Lowestoftferry.co.uk for full details. During 2017 Terrier will be available for private hire as well as some special organised trips. These include: The Lowestoft Maritime Food Experience. Comprising a visit to the oldest smoke house still active in Lowestoft, a trip on the ferry to Oulton Broad, a 3 course meal at the Red Herring with a specially designed menu and a return ferry trip to Lowestoft. The Lowestoft Maritime Heritage Tour. Comprising a return trip on the Lowestoft Ferry, a guided tour of the many historical sites facing on to Lake Lothing, a combined ticket giving access to Lowestoft Museum, Lowestoft Maritime Museum and the East Anglia Transport Museum and a visit to the Mincarlo, the last Lowestoft built fishing vessel. Gin tasting on the water. This tour comprises a return trip on the Lowestoft Ferry, guided tasting of 5 different Gins and exceptional Canapés prepared by the chefs of the Red Herring restaurant Further details about the Lowestoft Water taxi and all the special tours can be found at lowestoftferry.co.uk.

Thames Traditional Boat Festival

The Thames Traditional Boat Festival was first held at Fawley Meadows 37 years ago as a rally for like minded enthusiasts who wanted to show off their enthusiasm for the older, traditionally built craft that were fast disappearing from the river Thames. From these small beginnings the TTBR, or “The Trad” as it became known, has flourished

to the extent that it now attracts interest the world over. This prestigious event, re-born as the Thames Traditional Boat Festival now incorporates the traditional values of many other trades and crafts of a bygone era, as well as providing a fun day out for all the family. This years event takes place on 14th - 16th July www.tradboatfestival.com

Doggett’s Coat and Badge Race 25th July 2017 This unique event is rowed over a course of seven miles between the Palaces of Greenwich and Westminster. Each barge is manned under oars by crews of Freemen and Apprentices of the Company of Watermen and Lightermen. The event is designed to showcase the skills of Watermen and Lightermen in navigating under oars, using only their own strength, experience and the tide to propel their craft , which can weigh up to 30 tonnes. No more than three crew members can row at any time using the 20ft oars, known as “sweeps”. Two of the rowers power the craft whilst the third uses a sweep at the stern to steer the barge with the tide. As a further test of the crews’ navigational skills each barge must collect at least one pennant from barges moored along the course . The crews can also compete for the optional Almshouse Benevolent Fund Trophy, by collecting two pennants, or the Harry Hayward Trophy, for which three pennants must be collected from three moored barges along the course and the barge must use Number 2 Arch of Southwark Bridge. Prizes are awarded to the overall winner, two class winners and for the

two special optional race sections described above. There are also categories for the best dressed crew - each event has a theme, and the best painted barge. The event is very popular for spectators, who line the route, watch from bridges and other vantage points along the way or watch from one of the many Thames pleasure craft that follow the course. Foiled again

Marc Fovargue-Davies charts the rise of the cats

Reg White first brought serious cat sailing to Brightlingsea when flares were in vogue and disco was still in full swing, twice winning the Tornado world championships, along with the inaugural gold medal in the class at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. Since then, the Tornado too, has moved on, now sporting a square head main, twin wires and a spinnaker. What it has not yet acquired (for class racing, at least) though, is a set of hydrofoils. The search for every little advantage, along with the large development budgets that go with America’s Cup racing, have really helped move the development of foiling forward, to a point where, like their four legged namesakes, the latest cats seem to have developed a distinct aversion to water - and have started flying above it on foils. Not only has this dramatically speeded up the hunt for the ‘auld mug’, it is also inspiring the current generation of Brightlingsea cat sailors to explore the potential of foils on smaller cats. Needless to say, like most things in sailing, foils are far from straightforward and come in all shapes and sizes - as do the systems for controlling them - resulting in a wide variety of performance characteristics. However, one things for sure; there’s at least a definite advantage in using a cat as a platform for a 48

foiler; you don’t have to put the boat on her side to launch, plug in the foil, and then swim her into water deep enough to flip upright and sail away! Other choices remain though; whilst bigger foils will get you flying earlier, the trade off is that the increased drag will inevitably take its toll in terms of ultimate boat speed. In this respect, the Whisper, from White Formula - is the early riser; with a relatively large foil area, she’s soon clear of the water, so that owners of this exciting new boat will be able to experience as much flying time as possible. As well as shortening the learning curve, this also probably makes the Whisper accessible to a wider variety of sailors. The Vampire Project takes a somewhat different approach. Unlike the Whisper, it’s not a commercial project as such, but is all about the search for ultimate speed. As a result, she has rather smaller foils, so she’s unlikely to fly in much less than 8 knots of true wind. However, the lower drag results in an eyewateringly fast boat. Having taken line honours at last year’s Forts Race, Project Director Will Sunnucks explained that the performance projections were actually pretty close to reality. “we’re comfortably achieving the predicted 18 knots to windward, but are a little short of the downwind target of up to 38

knots - which our analyst tells us is because we should have been trapezing down wind too; but no-one was that sure about getting out on the wire at 35 odd knots…” To put the boats performance into some sort of context, one report of the 2016 Forts Race noted that “Will Sunnucks and Mark Self from Brightlingsea Sailing Club on the Vampire Project took the Dewhirst Trophy for the first leg, completing the 14 N Mi leg in 47 minutes, almost 10 minutes ahead of the Nacra 20 FCS sailed by Grant Piggott and Simon Farren from Weston Sailing Club, and 3 minutes ahead of the first F18 on corrected time!”

The Vampire Project : Photo Martina Orsini

These numbers are pretty remarkable, given that they amount to better than half the performance of an AC50 America’s Cup cat - but only need two crew and come in at a tiny fraction of the price. That will undoubtedly mean both more designs of both boats and foils evolving, as well as a rapidly expanding pool of talent for Ben Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR team to choose from in the future. The Guide wishes him and the team the best of luck in the finals in Bermuda this summer.

Foraging with the Coastal Explorer

Marc Fovargue-Davies goes in search of seafood on the Norfolk coast

There’s no shortage of great seafood stalls dotted around the coast, offering ‘catch of the day’ and all sorts of seafood delights; there’s little doubt that you’ll get fresher food than you will from the local supermarket, either; but why just shell out for seafood? Might you not be able to get even fresher treats - and could you be missing out by not fully experiencing the north Norfolk coast and the way that cockles, mussels, crabs, mackerel and samphire have all been traditionally harvested? Henry Chamberlain, an ex Royal Marine who also worked with the UN on the World Food Programme in Africa certainly thinks so, which is why last year, he set up the Coastal Exploration Company. Not only can you learn to handle his three fully restored traditional boats, you can also experience using each for its intended purpose, from their home port of Wells next the Sea. Growing up in north Norfolk, with its big skies and close bond with the sea, has given Henry an intimate knowledge of its coast as well as its wildlife. Those coming aboard - for one day or several - can take advantage of that knowledge to access little known beaches, watch wildlife or learn to navigate. Many though, will want to explore the local cockle and mussel beds around Scolt Head, Burnham Overy and Holkham to the west or, according to wind and tide, perhaps Cley and Blakeney. to the east. Getting to any of them, is clearly best done using boats that have been evolved over many years with just that purpose in mind. The Sheringham crab boat ‘My Girls’ is the archetypal north Norfolk beach boat; tough and capacious, yet light and buoyant, her double ended hull is designed to be able to take the ground as a matter of course, deal with the short chop of shallow water and avoid swamping when coming home through surf. She’s not just for crabs, either; she’s also ideal for mackerel fishing, harvesting shellfish or just watching birds and seals. Aboard, you’ll 52

find oars, a powerful standing lug and yes, an engine; electronics such as fish finders and chart plotters are however, conspicuous by their absence. The fleet also includes ‘Salford’ the last of the Kings Lynn built whelk boats. Like most working craft though, she’s always been used for a variety of other purposes as well. When gathering bait for cod fishing, she’d have probably had a small, workmanlike lug rig, but currently sports a rather more powerful gaff cutter rig, requiring a different set of handling skills and can venture further offshore than the crab boat. The third boat is a traditional ‘mussel flat’, a small, shallow boat that can follow the tide through tight inshore spaces such as the saltings around East Fleet, usually in search of of her traditional quarry - mussels. Not that all your time will necessarily be spent afloat; Marsh Samphire is very common on the saltings, and is likened to baby asparagus by many chefs. It’s characteristic saltiness makes it an ideal accompaniment to various kinds of shellfish, although it’s also used in other, more exotic recipes. Whilst you might ordinarily reach for a crisp Sauvignon Blanc to wash it all down, perhaps a ‘St Petersburg Martini’ - which also includes Marsh Samphire in the list of ingredients - might be more in the spirit of coastal exploration. At the end of the day, there can be no doubt that developing a better understanding of tides, navigation, wildlife and boat handling, results in a far more (occasionally, literally) immersive experience than merely waiting at a counter for your number to be called. Exploring with Henry might also make you wonder if the modern world has managed to lose a certain something, somewhere along the way; one thing is certain though - if you think you can access the whole world via a smart phone, it’s time to think again.

Summer reads for the Adventurous Swinging the Lamp by Nick Ardley If you have never taken the time to explore the East Coast’s myriad of tiny creeks, or marvel at the natural beauty of its saltmarsh and samphire coastline then Nick Ardley’s book ‘Swinging the lamp’ will surely persuade you that you should. Written with a wealth of passion and a richness of detail the book brings the East Coast to life in a unique and gentle way, exploring rivers and creeks from the Thames to the Deben and uncovering little tales from the past along the way. Regaling tales or “swinging the lamp” is an ancient seafaring tradition and one which the author continues as he weaves an absorbing account of life past and present on the East Coast rivers. Illustrated throughout with the authors sketches and photographs, this is a book that will make you want to go sailing and it is a great introduction to the wonders of the East Coast.

Leap In by Alexandra Heminsley

I have always struggled to understand why anyone would want to throw themselves into a cold grey sea on a winters day and actually claim to enjoy the experience, but having read “Leap in” by Alexandra Heminsley it suddenly all becomes much clearer. From the serenity of her wedding day dip to the waters of Ithaca the author takes us on an inspiring journey through pool, lido, sea and river as she battles to perfect the art of front crawl, learns to breath effectively in the water and eventually overcomes her

fear of the ocean. Charmingly written the pages of this book ooze a passion which is infectious and a desire to succeed which is heartwarming. It is easy to empathise with the highs and lows of Alexandra’s swimming journey, and delight in her enthusiasm even if we have never tried open water swimming ourselves. Having completed a 9 month swimming course and accomplished her first sea swim from pier to pier along Brighton’s seafront Alexandra pushes herself from one challenge to the next and her swimming journey takes her 4km along the River Arun in West Sussex, to Greece to swim around the islands of the Ionian and then back to the UK to the lake district for a solitary swim in a lakeland tarn. Through all the challenges, swimming related and personal Alexandra learns that “whilst it may be impossible to push back the tide or predict the weather it is ever possible to defy our expectations of ourselves” This is a delightful, upbeat life affirming read which if it doesn’t make you want to reach for your wet suit, grab a towel and head for the nearest beach then I don’t know what will. In the words of Alexandra Heminsley “sometimes you just have to leap in” 58

Estuary by Rachel Lichtenstein It is hard to live on the East Coast and not feel some kind of affinity for the vast body of water that is the Thames estuary. Many of us have sailed its waters or wandered its shores. We have gazed out across its vast ever changing seascape and marvelled at the beauty of this wild yet industrial place. Researched over 5 years Estuary is the story of the Thames as told through the lives of various local characters. The journey begins just east of Tower Bridge when the author boards an old Dutch barge for a trip along the water to Kent and back via Southend. This initial journey eventually leads the author further afield taking her on a voyage of discovery which includes sailing on a Thames barge, taking a trip to the sea forts, sailing an Estuary One Design, visiting Sealand and going cockling out of Leigh on Sea. The author also explores the docks at Tilbury and the new London Gateway deep water port. Her descriptions of the estuary are detailed and evocative and she manages to create a sense of place, that as a reader you feel very much part of. However it is the characters she meets along the way that really bring the book to life and tell the gritty, real story of the estuary. She meets mudlarkers, fishermen, tug men, cocklers and bargemen all with stories as diverse and vibrant as the characters themselves. The book concludes with a voyage in a Swan 46 during which the author explores the outer reaches of the Thames from Kent to Suffolk and back, and experiences the unpredictability of this seaway. Estuary is a portrayal of an ever changing land and seascape and the characters that occupy it. It is a very readable account of the Thames that will help you to know and understand this fascinating waterway just a little better.

Rotten Sailor

It runs in the family

In truth, my dad is a pretty good sailor. For years, he piloted a selection of sailing boats from a base in Langstone Harbour to ports near and far, and as far as I know, never lost anyone or anything significant overboard, except on one notable occasion, a huge bag of cannabis found in the chain locker of boat he was delivering, but that’s another story… In order to pass the buck about my own inadequacies, here’s a tale from when I was a kid and number one crew member, boat rower and milk fetcher. All of this is true, apart from the lies, which are true as well. Dad (Rotten Sailor Snr) had a weakness for Maurice Griffiths bilge keelers, and did loads of sea miles in a cutter headed, gunter rigged yawl Eventide that he had rebuilt. As we all got bigger, room got tighter and the distances got longer, a bigger boat was needed, and the choice made was a (very) second hand Waterwitch that was offered cheap because it had been put together with mild steel screws which all needed replacing with stainless. This was a huge job, and it took a good couple of years of very hard work and every available weekend hour to complete, but eventually, Sorciere was ready for transport and a new lease of life. The crane arrived and she was slung high in the air for the articulated boat-mover to get underneath. The boat was slid into place and headed off south for the big launch. Next day, she was lifted, but as the weight was taken up she shifted in her slings, and bumped back onto the trailer. No problem, she was re-slung and off we went. Dad had invited a couple of non-sailing mates, plus me, for a shakedown weekend cruise to the Isle of Wight, and we all grinned as she hit the water, had her mast stepped and we swung the old Lister (No electric start!) into life and pottered off to the swinging mooring. All was well, and spirits were high, until the bilge pump came on. Hmm, being ply and epoxy sheathed, this really shouldn’t happen. 62

The hunt for the leak started - skin fittings, loo fittings, engine cooling, log and stern gland were all fine, and it dawned on us that it was probably one of the bilge keels possibly from the bump on the trailer. The leak wasn’t terrible, but worrying and very disappointing after all that hard work, and dad was understandably concerned. Now the fun begins… As a thank you for their help, dad sent his patient crew away to the Ferryboat Inn with the kitty and he and I stayed on board to keep an eye on things. Remember this was the the late 70’s; life was glamorous and we were adventurous, so we decided on faggots for tea. On lighting the stove, there was a big ‘whumph’ and a distinctive smell of smouldering eyelashes. It turned out that an olive was missing from the gas supply and it had been filling up the stove with lpg. Ooops. (These were pre-inspection days of course….) So now, with a leaky boat, no supper and no pint, dad was getting a bit grumpy and I decided to turn in. At this point, you need to know about the tender and outboard. The tender needed to fit in the davits, so was only about 7 feet long, cosy for 2 and not the most stable. The engine was a Warrenjet, remember them? Think British Seagull having a sulk, only with less power. And a bugger to start. One of the guys was teetotal, and the other, Neville, only ever drank halves. This was completely accurate, but it turns out he could drink about 30 of them, and having had a belly full of Dorset Piddle (Not made up) and full of bravado jumps in the dinghy and lets the line go without starting the motor. Not a good idea. Tide on the ebb, half cut and flailing around trying to pull start a recalcitrant engine was never a good plan, and the almost inevitable happens and before you know it they are both in the water. This could have been really nasty but luckily for everyone concerned, a chap enjoying the evening from the cockpit of his boat sees events unfolding, starts engine and slips mooring collecting the now very sober

and soggy crew. Thank you to Mr Allen and his Jaguar 27 (Isn’t it funny the details you remember after 40 years?) Towing them back to Sorciere and with grateful thanks offered, Mr Allen slips away into the evening and we decide that the very best thing we can do, all things considered, is take the boat over to the quay to tie up for the night and have a proper look at everything in the morning. So we start the Lister again, and potter back, dinghy in tow, over to the quay. In the early hours however, the tide turns and the half submerged dinghy is no longer pulling at her painter, but pushing hard against the transom, forcing it’s way under the stern. Suddenly, the boat lists a good 20 degrees or so and everything falls over. 4 startled chaps

are rudely awakened, including Neville who has stripped off to try and dry his clothes. He gets turfed out of his bunk, his feet hit the cold floor and he thinks it’s the Solent coming back to have another go. In one Herculean effort, Neville ejects from the fore hatch like a (working) Polaris missile and stands, stark naked, on the jetty. Only to hear a gentle cough and a ‘good morning’ from one of the people in the queue of commuters waiting for the 6 o’clock ferry. So it’s not my fault. It’s genetic, you see. And the only lie was the Warrenjet - it was actually a great little engine.

Benfleet Yacht Club

NORE RACE 2017

This year the Nore Race will be on Saturday 1st July with the Prizegiving on Friday 7th July. This is a sailing race from Southend Pier around the Thames Estuary and back to the pier - about 17NM. The event has been run by Benfleet Yacht Club for many decades and dates back about 90 years to the time the race course included the Nore Lightship as a turning mark. Today, more modestly, the ‘Nore’ name gets a mention on a couple of buoys in the river. Almost any type of sailing boat may enter with just a few exceptions. Yachts must be equipped for cruising with fixed berths and cooking facilities. Windsurfers, kite-surfers and the like cannot be entered - there is no way to provide the support boat cover that these would require to stay safe. But otherwise cruising yachts and dinghies, monohull or multihull are all very welcome. How we keep the entry fee at just £20 is a wonder! And Gill Moon of EastCoast.Photos records the event with high quality photos, available to buy on-line after the race. Over the last few years entry numbers have been steady at about 105 with almost equal numbers of dinghies and cruisers. Obviously local clubs are well represented with Benfleet and Thorpe Bay Yacht Clubs prominent but the other local clubs make a good showing. They all provide the support boat cover that is so important to the safe running of this event. Thank you. An increasing number of boats come from further afield - Kent, North Essex and London mostly. They are all welcome and every entry gets a free Nore Race pennant.

66

The Prizegiving evening is an amazing celebration of participation and achievement with free entry to all entrants, crew, family and friends. Every year we have a great band and this year we have ‘The Persuaders’, though local sailors need little encouragement! Barbeque food is available and bars stay open with last orders at midnight. With such a wide range of boats entering we have a challenge making the contest fair. Many are content to sail in magnificent company and enjoy the experience, possibly with a good breakfast at anchor before and convivial refreshment after the race. Others are more competitive. There are prizes given to nine classes of boat which helps to give fair competition to everybody, with many other trophies and prizes for specific boat types and clubs. So there is a fair chance of coming away with something if you know how to make your boat go well. Barbarossa has entered for several years. This ‘pirate ship’ is fifty feet of green concrete, a gaff ketch owned by Rob Hart who has sailed it around the world. To be followed by this boat in full sail is a little unnerving! It needs a bit of a blow to go well and takes time to sail the course, but on corrected time makes a very respectable showing. At the other extreme a foiling moth, sailed by Kyle Stoneham of TBYC, flew round the course last year in less than 80 minutes. It was a physical challenge to hold the long tacks in the fresh wind, Kyle reported at the Prizegiving, where he collected a well deserved trophy. High water on race day, Saturday 1st July, is at 06:50 with dinghies starting at 10:50 and cruisers 11:00. Entry forms will be available at local clubs or may be downloaded from www.benfleetyachtclub.org
