Brooke Rucker Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2014

Brooke Rucker of Georgia was named the Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2014 during the 57th National Finals in Mobile, Alabama on June 28, 2014. In her hometown of Cartersville, Georgia, Brooke attended Woodland High School where she was treasurer of the National Honor Society and president of the Thespian Society. She served as dance captain of her school’s musical theatre group, C.A.T.S., for three years and was an active member of the chorus and dance departments. In addition to these roles, she served on the leadership team for Wildcats for Kids, a community service club. Dancing since the age of three, Brooke has been highlighted in many productions. At the Shuler Hensley Award Ceremony, she was selected twice as a featured dancer and awarded the Doris Corrie Russell Dance Scholarship. She also received the Outstanding Georgia Citizenship Award and the Etowah Foundation Scholarship provided by John and Ann Collins Memorial Scholarship. Other honors include being named the Accelerated Math Department Student of the Year, a Governor’s Honor Program State Finalist in Theatre, as well as a Class of 2014 Honor Graduate.

In addition to dancing, Brooke enjoys singing, acting and reading in her free time. She also has a love for fashion and styling outfits. Winning more than $60,000 in college scholarships and a gold medallion, Brooke will serve as the national representative of Distinguished Young Women throughout the year. She is a student at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida majoring in dance with plans to become a choreographer. Brooke is the program’s fourth national representative from Georgia.

Distinguished Alumnae Who are we? If you participated in the America’s Junior Miss or Distinguished Young Women program at any level (local, state, or national), then you are automatically a part of the Distinguished Alumnae! Alumnae have the opportunity to stay connected and involved with Distinguished Young Women, continue to develop a network of contacts with past participants, and most importantly, give back to the organization that has touched so many lives. What do we do? With your help, we can reach more young women than ever before and provide them with a once in a lifetime experience to have the time of their lives, just like we did! Each year we sponsor the Spirit of Distinguished Young Women scholarship award to the young woman who, as voted on by her peers, represents the true spirit of the program. Since its inception, Alumnae have provided more than $100,000 in scholarships at National Finals. We also support state programs in need of assistance by sponsoring scholarships, providing operational funds, or meeting other monetary needs to ensure that these programs can take place. All scholarships and other assistance we provide come directly from alumnae donations.

Finally, we help connect an amazing, diverse, and dynamic network of women through our alumnae reunions in cities across the country and through newsletters sharing updates and current happenings. How can I help? As our program continues to grow, change, and strengthen, we ask that you donate directly to the operation of the program nationwide or to fund scholarships. You have the unique opportunity to further our organization’s mission “to positively impact the lives of young women by providing a transformative experience that promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership and talent.” Donations from alumnae will support all levels of the program and make a direct impact on the 4,000 young women who participate nationwide every year. We accept both unrestricted donations and those that go directly to our foundation to fund scholarships. Unrestricted donations will go to a variety of areas, including helping state programs and participants in need, alumnae networking and reunions, alumnae database software, and other areas the Alumnae Committee determines such funds can make the most difference. Alumnae support is very important to our ongoing success and we urge you to stay involved with this organization that positively impacted your life. We will acknowledge all levels of Distinguished Alumnae donors on our website and in the National Finals program book.

Goodman (1991) enjoy spending time together following the 56th National Finals.

Be Your Best Self Founded in 1987, the Be Your Best Self (BYBS) program is the official outreach program of Distinguished Young Women. In keeping with our mission, the program provides an opportunity for participants to beneficially impact the lives of others in their communities, specifically young men and women. The simple and practical message of the Be Your Best Self program is carried across the country through dynamic and engaging presentations created by Distinguished Young Women participants at all levels (local, state and national). The Be Your Best Self program seeks to encourage young people to lead successful and productive lives. Participants delivering the Be Your Best Self message use their personal experiences and unique talents to create presentations that inspire leaders for the future. Be healthy, be involved, be studious, be ambitious, and be responsible are the five elements that help define what it means to Be Your Best Self. This year, Distinguished Young Women celebrated the 6th annual National Be Your Best Self Week, a nationwide event that took place April 21-25. During the week, Distinguished Young Women participants across the country visited with groups of children in their communities to share the Be Your Best Self message. As a result, thousands of young people learned what it

an outreach program of

means to be their best self and how they can work toward a bright and productive future. Distinguished Young Women is proud to offer a special scholarship award in conjunction with the Be Your Best Self program, the Distinguished Outreach Award. Any young woman who participated in a 2014 Distinguished Young Women program at the local, at-large or state level (excludes state winners) and participated in National Be Your Best Self Week was eligible to compete for the award. The recipient of the Distinguished Outreach Award will be announced on Finals Night, June 28. Be Your Best Self Scholarship Selection Committee: Amy Osmond Cook, Lisa Burnette, Bliss McMichael, Tobi Collins Weingart, Joy Blanchard, Abbey Hufstetler and Leigh Knosher.
