Tour Highlights

Loch Ness, 24 miles long and 700 feet deep, is most famous for its sightings of the Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as “Nessie”. Spend approximately 2 hours at Loch Ness, where you can choose to take a wonderful 5 Star Jacobite Loch Cruise and explore the ruins of Urquhart Castle and its modern visitor centre.

From Edinburgh we travel northwest, passing the imposing Stirling Castle, before making our first stop at Kilmahog. Here we stop for some light refreshments and the chance to see some Highland cattle up close. We then travel on through Rob Roy Country of Clans MacGregor and Campbell, and over the desolate landscape of Rannoch Moor and the Black Mount to Glencoe, one of Scotland’s most famous glens, site of the 1692 massacre of the Clan MacDonald.

Continuing via Loch Linnhe, we stop in the Fort William area for lunch then continue into the natural beauty of the Great Glen as we pass beneath Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. Travelling on, we admire the Caledonian Canal, and the pretty village of Fort Augustus, enjoying spectacular views of Loch Ness, as we drive along the shoreline to Urquhart Castle.

Leaving Rosslyn we continue into the heart of the Scottish Borders, an area rich in hills, valleys, rivers and moorland, as well as the traditional home to Scottish rugby. We travel to the historic town of Melrose, birthplace of the game of Rugby Sevens and location of Melrose Abbey, founded in 660, said to be the burial place of the casket containing the heart of Robert the Bruce. Here we stop for lunch and have free time to explore Melrose and its Abbey.

From our starting point by Edinburgh Castle, we head out of the city to the village of Roslin, making our first stop at Rosslyn Chapel. Described as the “Library in Stone”, the inside walls of Rosslyn Chapel are covered in thousands of ancient carvings, each with a story of its own. You can also learn of the myths and legends surrounding the chapel, including tales of the Knights

Templar. Rosslyn Chapel’s worldwide fame increased thanks to “The Da Vinci Code”, Dan Brown’s blockbusting novel.

After lunch we drive further into the Highlands, stopping to view one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, Kilchurn Castle, jutting into beautiful Loch Awe and stunningly framed by the surrounding mountains. Then it’s on to Inveraray, a quaint small town built in the mid-18th century, on the shore of Loch Fyne. Explore the town and pick up some Highland souvenirs, or pay an optional visit to Inveraray Castle (April to October only), the historic home of the Duke of Argyll, chief of the Clan Campbell, which is set in large beautiful gardens overlooking Loch Fyne.

We now start our homeward journey, driving over the Arrochar Alps, an attractive range of mountains, with a brief pause near the top of the Rest and Be Thankful Pass. A little later we reach enchanting Loch Lomond, where we stop at the pretty lochside village of Luss before returning to Edinburgh.

From Edinburgh we travel west, passing the historic and imposing Stirling Castle, high on its volcanic rock, and on to a visit at the magnificent Doune Castle (which featured in the cult movie ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’).

From there we drive into the Highlands, past the lovely Loch Lubnaig and up through impressive Glen Ogle, stopping nearby for lunch and beautiful views of the surrounding scenery.

Leaving Edinburgh we travel to Fife for our first stop at Dunfermline Abbey, built by King David I of Scotland. We move on through Glen Devon and the Gleneagles Hotel Estate, venue of the 2014 Ryder Cup, to Glenturret Distillery, in the small market town of Crieff, where we can take a fascinating and fun tour at the Famous Grouse Experience, Glenturret Distillery.

Explore Perthshire’s beautiful scenic glens and visit Scotland’s oldest distillery, The Famous Grouse Experience at Glenturret (Est. 1775). In the mid-afternoon we drive north to cross the River Tweed into the historic border town of Coldstream. If time permits during this journey there will be a stop at Flodden Field, one of the best preserved battlefields in Northern Europe and scene of the infamous battle of 1513 which ended in victory for the English and the death of James IV, King of Scots. *Alnwick Castle interior closed in October. We will still visit Alnwick and the exterior of Alnwick Castle, and will also explore Bamburgh Castle instead. After a lunch stop in the ski resort of Aviemore we move south for a visit to the old military garrison of Ruthven Barracks, built by General Wade. We continue our return journey via The Hermitage, stopping for a gentle forest walk in idyllic Scottish woodland, before we cross the Forth Bridges, back to Edinburgh.

DAY 1 From Edinburgh we head west to Glasgow, first stopping at the picturesque conservation village of Luss, on the ‘Bonny, Bonny Banks’ of Loch Lomond. We then descend into the desolate expanse of Rannoch Moor, passing the Black Mount, to dramatic Glencoe, site of the 1692 massacre of the MacDonald Clan.

DAY 2 Enjoy a flexible itinerary today - choose to visit the fascinating Culloden Battlefield, where Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites were defeated by the Duke of Cumberland and glimpse the ancient stones of the Neolithic Clava Cairns, before the opportunity for a visit and whisky tasting at Tomatin Distillery.

Take two leisurely days, travel in comfort in a small group and savour the delights of the Highlands with your guide; see rivers, lochs and mountains, and experience plenty of rich Highland history - with an overnight stay in the Highland capital of Inverness.

Enjoy a leisurely walk before continuing north towards Fort William and Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. After lunch in the Fort William area, we trace the 24 mile shoreline of Loch Ness, passing Urquhart Castle, then on to Inverness, Capital of the Highlands, where we arrive early evening.

DAY 2 After breakfast we head north into The Great Glen, a geographical fault line characterised by a chain of impressive lochs, including Loch Ness. We enjoy a photo stop at Glen Garry, before arriving at one of the most iconic castles in Scotland, Eilean Donan Castle (interior closed in winter) to explore the castle and its beautiful setting. Our journey continues with a stop for lunch and views of Loch Ness in the pretty lochside village of Fort Augustus.
