Coaches Turn to Seniors to Lead Boys Varsity Basketball With the large majority of their regular season already behind them, the Boys Varsity Basketball Team has started off strong, with a 10-6 record. With the coaches and players preparing to take the court with high hopes leading towards their Districts games in the new year, the season has made a lasting effect, as seniors like Jimmy Mouser have seen the team’s promise and improvement from the very beginning. “This season as a whole so far has been positive,” said Mouser. “We have had a couple of losses but overall we continue to grow and improve everyday that we’re in the gym. As seniors, the coaches decided to leave a lot of the responsibility up to us as a team. It’s made us a better team than I have previously been a part of...it’s a long season and it looks promising, but there is still work to be done.“ Believing that their Districts games against Keller, Fossil Ridge and Haltom High Schools will be their most difficult competitors, Mouser has learned over time the strengths and weaknesses that have made the team, creating a balance of key factors to play off of. “This season is the most unique and special season of basketball I’ve played...my teammates are like family,” Mouser said. “We have all played together for so long and we know each other well enough that we are able to play off of each other’s strengths and weaknesses...I love every minute of it.” With few pre-district games left in their season, the team itself has created a standard expectation for each player, hoping to minimize their losses and maximize the season to the fullest. “Some ultimate team goals we have are to win district, win a playoff game, and to always be as competitive as possible,” continued Mouser. “[We try to be] “everyday guys”. “Everyday guys” means [that we need to] show up on time ready to compete and ready to go hard and get better every single day.” We really push the concept of “no days off.”

Junior Breaks Away From The Pack by Starting First Ever TC Girls Rugby Team With the opportunity to start and lead her own squad of rugby players, Ramos fought to make her dream come true. Facing the struggles of training and forming a team head on, Ramos and the coaches have accepted the challenge, taking it step by step. “This season started off slow at first with only three girls on the team but it is progressively getting bigger and more exciting”, said Ramos. “Mainly we’re focusing on communication and defensive drills, and just getting comfortable playing with each other. Individually I’m working towards being able to lead my team to more victories this season and grow as a well rounded player” The team had the chance to see how well they could play together in their last game against Celina High School. With a few girls coming inexperienced to the game of rugby, Ramos has found that as an advantage for her team, rather than a hinderance. The team won two out of the three matches in the game, scoring 21-14 the first round, and 15-10 in their second win. “Our last game was our first game ever, none of us having ever played a game in our lives, and we rocked it,” Ramos explained. “All the players on the team have their strengths, and we exploited them so well for a first game, it surprised us.”
timber creek rugby schedule Having first started practicing with the boys rugby squad, junior Victoria Ramos has started Timber Creek’s first ever Girls Rugby Club. Beginning with only three girls in Sept. and now having created a full team, they’ve won two out their first three matches in their first ever game, serving as only the beginning for the growing team. For Ramos, the team not only helps build strength and stamina, but also creates a family, with everyone starting at the basics and working up. “No experience is needed. We always start with the basics. Even with the experienced players, we start from the beginning. We explain the game, we explain everything,” Ramos said. “It’s like a sisterhood. It’s such a personal and respectful sport. You can make so many friends out of it.” As the only girl who practiced with the boys team last year when the Rugby Club was first started, Ramos soon learned that practicing wasn’t sufficient enough for her, wanting more than just going over drills and scrimmaging with the boys. “Practicing was no longer enough for me, I had to play no matter what,” Ramos said. “After a few months of talking about it with the coach, he finally gave me the go to start recruiting for a girl’s team, and it was one of the best days of my life.”

timber creek Soccer Raises 5,000 for Rex King memorial tournament
Hosting the sixth annual Rex King Tournament as not only a way to honor not only Rex King, but also to honor other families that may be going through a battle with sickness as well. With the tournament benefiting Community Hospice of Texas (CHOT), the team recently raised $5,000 for the cause. Having already raised over $50,000 over the years that they have been hosting this fundraiser, the team has high hopes of reaching their donation goal of $20,000 for this year. “It was my idea to start the drive for CHOT,” said King. “My father helped start the Hearst Soccer Association, and he was a big part of [mine and my sister’s] ‘soccer season. When he passed, it was sudden…they took excellent care of my dad, and I just wanted to find a way to repay them.” With the tournament itself being held from Jan. 4 to Jan. 6, all schools in the district will be participating, with also be a few schools from the area as well, such as Byron Nelson. JV games will be held here at Timber Creek, while half the varsity games will be held here at TCHS, and the other half at Fossil Ridge, including both women’s and men’s games. “100% of our proceeds go to help pay for patients [who] can’t afford care when they and their families need it the most,” said Coach Mike King. “[The fundraiser helps] families who can’t afford to support their dying relatives,” King said. “They don’t ask how the families are going to pay for treatment, they just take care of them.”

JV Boys win tournament
swim shatters records Stepping up to the block were this year’s 14 TISCA, Texas Interscholastic Swim Coach Association, qualifiers who dove into a record breaking meet Nov. 17 and 18 at the Mansfield Natatorium. A total of four school records were broken and several best times were achieved by the meet’s end. The records were broken in prelims on Friday and then re-broken at finals on Saturday in the 200 I.M by freshman Maci Finder, the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle by freshman Amelia Cicerelli , and the 400 freestyle relay by Cicerelli, freshman Molly Donaldson, Finder, and sophomore Carolyn Kosek. “During and after the race it didn’t feel like I went that fast and soon after I couldn’t move,” Cicerelli said.
On Tuesday, Nov. 21, Timber Creek’s Boys JV Basketball team returned as Champions of the Western Hills 2017 Sub-Varsity Tournament. Through the bracket of twelve teams in two days, JV played four in the respective order of Azle, Young Men’s Leadership Academy (YMLA), Birdville, and Eaton. Each game proved to be no struggle, as they resulted in winning all, 4-0. JV Boys coach, Ryan Massad (Mass), details the events of the championship. “On the first day, we didn’t do too well. But, luckily the ball bounced our way and we won the first two games.” Coach Mass construes. “Then, on the second day of the tournament we played in the semifinals and the finals and my guys came ready to play. It was really all them, they executed and they did everything right and it was awesome.” Though the basketball season has just begun, the Falcons are 8-1 overall. Sophomore forward, Shawn Harris reveals key aspects of being on the team. “Motivation, passion, and dedication, that’s the big thing.” Harris reflects. “And beyond yourself, team chemistry, unselfishness, and a willingness to have a ‘just do it’ mindset is very important.” Similar to other clubs and organizations, basketball players use their drive to proudly embody the ideals of our school. “Basketball is a means of release for me. All sense of stress just evades you once you step foot on the court. It’s almost indescribable.” Harris explains. “Even more so, being able to go to tournaments to represent Timber Creek the way we do is an honor, above all.”
Coach Betsy Murphy, Timber Creek’s new swim coach, was extremely pleased with how the meet turned out. “The swimmers really stepped it up.” she said “[They] put [their] hearts into it. I love watching [them] race.” With five individuals and two more as part of relay, seven out of the 13 Timber Creek swimmers made it to finals. “I think the team has great potential, we’re already breaking some records. I think we have a good chance of placing well at district.” Coach Murphy said. The team traveled to and from the meet together both days, which provided some quality team bonding time spent making jokes on the bus and on the pool deck. Though much time is spent together during practice, swim meets are where they get to cheer on one another and celebrate success. “I was super excited going in [high school swim],” Cicerelli explained. “ I love it, mostly the meets and watching everyone cheer as a team,” Cicerelli explained.” As said by Finder, the swim team is an “irreplaceable family”.
Wrestling Team Looks to Bring the Heat This Season
Beginning their season with the Purple & Gold Final Wrestle-Offs Dual, the Timber Creek Wrestling team has started off with a solid team, on track to meet this season’s goals. With the majority of the season still coming ahead of them, the athletes have been continuously training, taking the season on as one second at a time rather than as a whole. “Currently, We have quite a few solid athletes on the team,” stated Coach Jayson Congar. “Starting with the Ladies: Bianca Rosales is a state runner-up from 2017, Jude Miller and Rachael Ingram are returning regional qualifiers that will help lead this girls line-up. The Rodriguez twins will be the ignitor for these girls this year. If they start off well, the girls will feed off that energy and have good days. For the boys, returning state qualifier Zachary Grimes will be looking to win a state title in his senior campaign. James Jesuroga, Will Caillet, Tommy Dalzell, Will Burch, and freshman Patrick Procopio will look to make some noise on the state level as well.” With every wrestler expected to meet their individual goals specifically, these student-athletes have learned to practice one second at a time and get one percent better each day, hoping to peak in their individual performance at exactly the right time. “In a match the outcome can change that quickly,” Congar said. “…I have found that every year presents new challenges that require different strategies and training styles. When each individual peaks at the right time the team will find success when it is desired. Nothing matters in wrestling until February, that is when Districts, Regionals, and State take place. I have been on the job for three and a half months and can’t speak of previous seasons, but this team has improved from my first day on the job.“
