This is difficult to dispute and there is no doubt that a space with wood in it, whether it is used in the wall panelling, flooring, furniture or all three, is simply a better place to be. Our October issue is a celebration of the renaissance that wood, as a material and an industry, has enjoyed. It is only fitting that our cover features the stylish restaurant and bar - The Hub - located in the Dubai International Airport - Terminal 3, which won the ‘Outstanding use of American Hardwood in the Middle East’ award at the recently concluded CID Awards 2013. The American Hardwood Export Council, a pioneer and global advocate for the timber industry, has initiated a project with PE International to develop a system to allow U.S. hardwood exporters to provide a comprehensive American Hardwood Environmental Profile (AHEP) with every individual consignment of product delivered to any market in the world. The aim of the project is to ensure that credible environmental data specific to individual consignments - adjusted according to key parameters such as kilning efficiency and transport routes and modes - can be delivered quickly and efficiently without significant cost. As such, our sustainability feature takes a closer look at this project, which will enable U.S. hardwood suppliers to become the first wood suppliers, possibly the first suppliers of any mainstream commercial material, to provide comprehensive environmental impact data with every delivery. The application of wood as a viable construction material for tall buildings that would have a lower environmental impact is argued for by Michael Charters, an architect based in Chicago. We take a closer look at ‘Big Wood,’ a prototype for a large-scale skyscraper made from wood that he designed for the ‘2013 eVolo Skyscraper Competition’. This sprawling mixed-use complex aims to serve as a sustainable alternative to standard building materials, which are expensive and require a great deal of energy to produce. In addition, our design feature highlights the durability, dimensional stability and reliability of Accoya wood, which is particularly suited to exterior applications where performance and appearance are valued. The extremes of India’s diverse climatic conditions are being overcome by the world leading technology of Accoya wood, which is now being used on several high profile construction projects throughout the country. This issue also features a special supplement on American Softwoods. The supplement takes a closer look at the species and species groupings that are commonly used in the Middle East whilst also highlighting the environmental credentials of American softwoods. In addition, Dr. Jeffrey Howe from Dovetail Partners, a regular contributor to the magazine, explains how to really ‘save a tree’. Howe argues that whilst it is common to promote alternate, often non-renewable materials under the mantra of ‘save a tree’, the truth is that by buying paper, we are actually saving trees. We also talk to Philip Buisseret, Secretary General at CEI-Bois, who have published a guide - ‘Tackle Climate Change: Use Wood’ - with a view to contribute to a better understanding of the environmental benefits to be gained by making wider use of wood and wood-based products. As promised in our August issue, October will mark the launch of the ‘International’ edition of the magazine at the upcoming MUMBAIWOOD exhibition. Naturally, we have signed on as a media partner for India’s biggest timber expo - INDIAWOOD 2014. Our plan is to initially distribute the international edition in India and then scale our circulation to include Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh within the next year. The aim is definitely to have two editions that complement each other and firmly establish the title as a reference for professionals and companies working within the industry. As always, I would like to encourage you to log on to the website - www.timberdesignandtechnology.com - for the latest updates and please get in touch if you have any

‘The Hub’ wins ‘Outstanding use of American Hardwood in the Middle East’ award at CID Awards 2013 conceal the hidden steel structure that supports ceiling and columns and the attention to detail makes the whole structure appear to be made of solid timber. This has resulted in a very economically viable product, which enhances the restaurant experience with its warm and friendly tones,” said Roderick Wiles. AHEC’s involvement as the Gold Sponsor is part of its extensive outreach campaign championing the usage of American hardwoods and reflective of its commitment to educate specifiers and to increase awareness of the potential applications offered by American hardwoods. The ‘Outstanding use of American Hardwood in the Middle East’ category once again attracted nominations from leading design practices across the region. The shortlisted nominees this year included ‘KOI Restaurant’ by Bishop Design; ‘Cadiz Restaurant’ by LW Design Group; ‘Urban Bistro’ by Draw link Group; ‘The Hub’, a stylish restaurant and bar located in the Dubai International

In addition, the ‘Highly Commended’ spot this year went to the ‘Hakkasan Doha’ restaurant, which was submitted by Woods Bagot, the winner of the award in 2012. “Located in Terminal 3, which has an annual capacity of 43 million passengers, The Hub recalls the imagery of an upscale cabin, with a variety of warm, natural materials, such as the cow hide rug and the fluid combination of design elements including the antler-shaped lamps, leather couches, and the blue under-glow that frames the entrance desk, all of which make it truly stand out. NEPCon recognized as EUTR Monitoring organization NEPCon has received formal recognition as a Monitoring Organization (MO), making it one of only two bodies (Conlegno is the other one) that have been recognized as competent to aid companies in complying with the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR). The role of the MOs is to help EU operators fulfill their obligations by providing a due diligence system for legal timber sourcing and conducting regular evaluation of the users’ system implementation. According to the EUTR guidelines, choosing to work with an MO is voluntary and does not exempt the company from liability. However, the main benefit for companies of engaging with an MO is the help in navigating the EUTR, safe in the knowledge that they can trust the quality of the provided system as well as the due diligence evaluations. As a basis for making its decision, the EU has reviewed NEPCon’s LegalSourceTM ‘Due Diligence System’ as well as the organization’s competence for conducting performance evaluations. NEPCon’s system has been tested by several leading industries and has also been used as the framework for developing the due diligence system that the European Timber Trade Federation (ETTF) shares with its members. Significantly, to date, hundreds of corporate and public sector organizations have tapped into NEPCon’s timber legality expertise. “The EC’s recognition of the quality and robustness of our due diligence system is good news not only for us, but also for the companies we work with. We have taken great efforts to ensure that our system is user-friendly whilst being aligned with the EUTR and other legal frameworks of key timber markets,” said Peter Feilberg, Executive Director of NEPCon. “There is great demand for professional expertise on legal timber sourcing. As such, better recognition of the full value of forests is crucial. Significantly, from the economic point of view, this can result in better profitability of forest management, which in turn becomes an incentive for public and private investments in the forest sector. Aiming to bring some clarity to the contribution of forests, UNECE/FAO has released a publication that builds on several recent studies, mobilizing all the knowledge and expertise of ECE/FAO

highly efficient low-waste fashion. Through trade, the ECE region supplies other regions’ needs for wood and forest products. However, many of the goods and services provided by the forests of the region are not marketed, or indeed assigned monetary value, leading to distorted perceptions of the relative importance of different functions, as well as to economic problems for forest owners. Today, the ECE region forest sector contributes about USD 300 billion to the economy of the region, which is approximately 1 percent of GDP, but this share reaches 3-6 percent in a few countries. Nearly 5.4 million people work in the forest sector as formally defined, which represents about 1 percent of the economically active population. This does not include the

the economy. A society with abundant forests and relatively few people will manage its forests differently from a society centered on cities where an important human population exerts constant pressure on the forest resource. The ECE region contains many remote regions with extensive forests but relatively few people, for instance in Russia, Northern Europe and North America, but also many densely populated regions such as Western Europe or the eastern seaboard of the USA. On average each European has 0.3 hectares (ha) of forest, each North American 1.8 ha, while each Russian has nearly 6 ha. In comparison, the global average is 0.6 ha of forest per person.
How do forests contribute to economic development in the ECE region? Forests, with the industries that depend on them, create wealth and income, and provide employment and livelihoods. Wood is an important part of the modern economy: it is especially attractive as a raw material and fuel because its supply is often sustainable and it can be used and re-used in a

to about 0.25 m3 of wood for energy extracted directly from forests. In addition, wood harvests are well below the physical potential of forests all over the region, so the natural physical capital is growing steadily. Significantly, there is practically no wastage of wood, as the sector puts almost all harvest and industry residues and recovered paper and wood to good use. Landscape care wood (from urban forests, orchards, roadsides etc.) and recovered wood (e.g. pallets, demolition wood) are also becoming significant sources of raw material and fuel. MENA region an important market for American Softwoods Trade Data Saudi Arabia
Long the powerhouse of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Saudi Arabia is a significant player in the wood business. In 2012, sales of American softwoods more than doubled by volume, when compared to 2011. GDP growth in 2012 was 4.34 percent. The oil sector dominates the economy accounting for 80 percent of budget revenues, 90 percent of exports and 45 percent of GDP. A substantial building programme offers opportunities both for Saudi importers and for American exporters to increase sales even further. In 2012, Southern Yellow Pine was the dominant American species, followed by Douglas fir.

Large and growing populations, with a resulting need for new infrastructure and housing, make the Middle East and North Africa an important market for the timber industry. Buyers’ requirements are changing with the accent in some markets such as Algeria and Morocco towards lower quality timber. According to data released by the US Department of Agriculture, U.S. softwood sales to MENA countries were a record USD 27.66 million in 2012, against USD 20.42 million in 2011, an increase of 39 percent. The leading destination for American softwood exports in the Middle East was Saudi Arabia (5,176 cubic meters), with Turkey a close second (5,050 cubic meters). In North Africa, Libya (12,799 cubic meters) holds the top spot with sales of USD 6.4 million, followed by Egypt (10,671

In 2012, GDP growth was 4 percent and GDP per capita at USD 49,000 is one of the highest in the world. The UAE enjoyed a trade surplus of USD 19 billion in 2012 and its largest trading partners are Japan and India. Political upheavals and the resulting uncertainty likely means these markets will continue to see volatility in the coming years.
The Future “American softwood exports to the Middle East and Northern Africa have nearly tripled over the past four years, despite increasing competition from the world’s other softwood growing regions. We attribute that growth to the region’s growing economies, of course, but in large part also to increasing awareness of the higher qualities and benefits that American softwoods offer,” says Charles Trevor, American Softwoods Director for the Middle East and North Africa. “Much of the American softwood exported is for interior applications, such as doors, windows, picture frames, mouldings, flooring, panelling and other millwork. Furniture components and edge-glued panels are also key end uses for softwood lumber whilst western species such as Douglas fir and hemlock in clear grades are prized for wood window and door stock as well as for window frames,” adds Trevor. “We have been exporting our high quality softwoods for two hundred years and it is our role to ensure the industry is fully aware of the opportunities and advantages of species such as Southern Yellow Pine, Douglas fir, hemlock and Eastern White Pine. We aim to work with the timber industry, providing technical information and assistance to develop the market for these under used species,” concludes Craig Larsen, President of the Softwood Export Council.

When it comes to tackling climate change, no other material comes close to matching wood’s unique benefits. Whereas all other building materials contribute to the carbon emissions, which cause climate change. The Low Carbon Choice When it comes to tackling climate change, no other material comes close to matching wood’s unique benefits. Whereas all other building materials contribute to the carbon emissions which cause climate change, American softwoods sequester carbon, helping to slow the rate of climate change.

harvested and converted into wood products, the carbon remains stored in the wood during its service life, while new trees are planted to continue the cycle.
Forest Certification Resource extraction, the process by which trees are harvested, really is the only negative mark against wood. Whilst we can’t escape the fact that a tree must be harvested in order to make wood products, the U.S. forest industry has made tremendous strides in recent decades to reduce the impact of logging activities. A large number of positive changes in forest management practices have also resulted from forest certification programs, such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). These independent, third-party certification programs help to assure purchasers that the forests used to produce American softwood timber have been managed responsibly with regard to protecting wildlife, water quality, air quality, biodiversity, and reforestation practices. The result has been a dramatic improvement in American forest practices over the years. With the growing number of U.S. sawmills able to supply certified timber, buyers throughout the Middle East will have little difficulty sourcing third-party certified American softwood lumber whenever it is requested.

The European forestry industry recognizes that its future is inextricably linked with the protection and expansion of its forests. This ensures that more trees are planted than are harvested, in order to allow for natural losses and for the forest to be well stocked. More and more often forests are third-party certified for sustainable management practices, FSC and PEFC schemes being the most prominent among them. Furthermore, almost 39 million ha or 18 percent of the European forest area are set aside to conserve ecological and landscape diversity. More than 2.3 million ha are strict forest reserves, with no active human intervention. In addition, 85-90 percent of the forest area of Europe is used for economic, recreational, and other multiple-use purposes and also Image © AHEC

Sustainable Wood Buildings The European Commission’s roadmap for moving to a competitive lowcarbon economy in 2050, aims at cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 80-95 percent by 2050 in order to keep climate change below 2°C. This roadmap also points to the role of the built environment in achieving the 80 percent reduction target. All new buildings will have to be nearly zeroenergy and highly material-efficient, and policies for renovating the existing building stock will be put in place so that it is cost-efficiently refurbished at a rate of 2 percent per year. The cascade use of wood is based on the efficient use of this natural raw material: manufacturing of wood products, reuse, repair and recycling, as well as the final valorization of energy content. Indeed, wood ought to be used for its highest value before being converted into energy. Wood can be used, reused and recycled several times but it can only be burned once. The woodworking industry is not opposed to the use of wood as a renewable energy source, but this should only be done when no other industrial uses are possible any longer. Moreover, the Accoya wood production process does not compromise the wood’s strength or machinability. The combination of UV resistance, dimensional stability, durability and retained strength means that Accoya wood offers a wealth of new opportunities to architects, designers and specifiers. Timber Design & Technology takes a look at some key projects in India where Accoya has been specified.

The organization wanted to create a decked area on the top floor of the 16-storey building, which would create a marine atmosphere providing visitors with spectacular views over the Arabian Sea. resulted in the use of Accoya wood due to its durability, stability and high performance capabilities - making it perfect for any demanding outdoor application. According to RitikaaWood, the challenging element of this project was to secure the decking without fixing any supporting joists to the concrete or drilling any holes. Their solution was to bond the joist sub structure using Bostik’s exterior grade polyurethane single component adhesive. RitikaaWood have also implemented the decking with enough space below the boards to drain water during the monsoon season. RitikaaWood have created a one-off sliding door solution, which creates a 75 percent opening to blur the boundaries between the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The solution included a one-off four track, four pane sliding window system weighing approximately 70kg per pane, which allowed for easy and fast drainage of surface rain water from the tracks. Accoya has been used for windows and balcony doors on this particular project. The combination of heavy rainfall, high humidity levels and moisture from the sea causes rapid decay in most natural wood materials, due to expansion and contraction and their exposure to water, yet Accoya is so far standing up to these challenges. Suleman Bhanji, Architect at Design Matrix commented: “I was attracted by the customization possibilities in addition to the superior performance characteristics of Accoya which I needed for this
