FROM THE EDITOR

Editor’s comment Amongst his many other achievements, celebrated American architect Frank Lloyd Wright was famous for saying, “Wood is the most humanly intimate of all materials. Man loves his association with it, likes to feel it under his hand, sympathetic to his touch and to his eye. Wood is universally beautiful to man.” This is difficult to dispute and there is no doubt that a space with wood in it, whether it is used in the wall panelling, flooring, furniture or all three, is simply a better place to be. This issue marks the launch of our Issue 01 | october 2013 Timber Design & Technology Magazine Director Andy MacGregor publisher@citrusmediagroup.net +971 55 849 1574 Marketing Director Eric Hammond marketing@citrusmediagroup.net +971 4 455 8400

International edition and is a celebration of the renaissance that wood, as a material and an industry, has enjoyed. Six months into the EUTR and the impacts are already being felt not only in Europe but also in markets such as the Middle East and India. Whilst traders and operators scramble to ensure ‘due diligence’ and compliance with the regulation, the initial feedback has been that more communication is required to clear some of the confusion around this landmark piece of legislation. As such, we highlight the findings of a recently published report that explores the potential effects of the EU Timber Regulation and the growing demand for forest certification on India’s timber industry. The potential impact is significant given that Indian products listed under the EUTR have an annual export value of around USD 1.3 billion. The American Hardwood Export Council, a pioneer and global advocate for the timber industry, has initiated a project with PE International to develop a system to allow U.S. hardwood exporters to provide

The aim of the project is to ensure that credible environmental data specific to individual consignments - adjusted according to key parameters such as kilning efficiency sustainability feature takes a closer look at this project, which will enable U.S. hardwood suppliers to become the first wood suppliers, possibly the first suppliers of any mainstream commercial material, to provide The application of wood as a viable construction material for tall buildings that would have a lower environmental impact is argued for by Michael Charters, an architect based in Chicago. We take a closer look at ‘Big Wood,’ a prototype for a large-scale skyscraper made from wood that he designed for the ‘2013 eVolo Skyscraper Competition’. This sprawling mixed-use complex aims to serve as a sustainable alternative to standard building materials, which are expensive and require a great deal of energy to produce. In addition, our design feature highlights the durability, dimensional stability and reliability of Accoya wood, which is particularly suited to exterior applications where performance and appearance are valued. The extremes of India’s diverse climatic conditions are being overcome by the world leading technology of Accoya wood, which is now being used on several high profile construction projects throughout the country. This issue also features a special supplement on American Softwoods. The supplement takes a closer look at the species and species groupings that are commonly used in India whilst also highlighting the environmental credentials of American softwoods. We also talk to Philip Buisseret, Secretary General at CEI-Bois, who have published a guide - ‘Tackle Climate Change: Use Wood’ - with a view to contribute to a better understanding of the environmental benefits to be gained by making wider use of wood and wood-based products. We will officially launch the ‘International’ edition of the magazine at MUMBAIWOOD exhibition. Naturally, we have signed on as a media partner for India’s biggest timber expo - INDIAWOOD 2014. Our plan is to initially distribute the international edition in India and then scale our circulation to include Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh within the next year. The aim is definitely to have two editions that complement each other and firmly establish the title as a reference for professionals and companies working within the industry. ‘The Hub’ wins ‘Outstanding use of American Hardwood in the Middle East’ award at CID Awards 2013 conceal the hidden steel structure that supports ceiling and columns and the attention to detail makes the whole structure appear to be made of solid timber. This has resulted in a very economically viable product, which enhances the restaurant experience with its warm and friendly tones,” said Roderick Wiles. AHEC’s involvement as the Gold Sponsor is part of its extensive outreach campaign championing the usage of American hardwoods and reflective of its commitment to educate specifiers and to increase awareness of the potential applications offered by American hardwoods. The ‘Outstanding use of American Hardwood in the Middle East’ category once again attracted nominations from leading design practices across the region. The shortlisted nominees this year included ‘KOI Restaurant’ by Bishop Design; ‘Cadiz Restaurant’ by LW Design Group; ‘Urban Bistro’ by Draw link Group; ‘The Hub’, a stylish restaurant and bar located in the Dubai International

NEPCon recognized as EUTR Monitoring organization NEPCon has received formal recognition as a Monitoring Organization (MO), making it one of only two bodies (Conlegno is the other one) that have been recognized as competent to aid companies in complying with the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR). The role of the MOs is to help EU operators fulfill their obligations by providing a due diligence system for legal timber sourcing and conducting regular evaluation of the users’ system implementation. According to the EUTR guidelines, choosing to work with an MO is voluntary and does not exempt the company from liability. However, the main benefit for companies of engaging with an MO is the help in navigating the EUTR, safe in the knowledge that they can trust the quality of the provided system as well as the due diligence evaluations. As a basis for making its decision, the EU has reviewed NEPCon’s LegalSourceTM ‘Due Diligence System’ as well as the organization’s competence for conducting performance evaluations. NEPCon’s system has been tested by several leading industries and has also been used as the framework for developing the due diligence system that the European Timber Trade Federation (ETTF) shares with its members. Significantly, to date, hundreds of corporate and public sector organizations have tapped into NEPCon’s timber legality expertise. “The EC’s recognition of the quality and robustness of our due diligence system is good news not only for us, but also for the companies we work with. We have taken great efforts to ensure that our system is user-friendly whilst being aligned with the EUTR and other legal frameworks of key timber markets,” said Peter Feilberg, Executive Director of NEPCon. “There is great demand for professional expertise on legal timber sourcing. EPD An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) - referred to in ISO standards as a Type III environmental declaration includes information supplied to both industrial and private consumers. It provides quantified environmental product information for the entire life cycle of a product, issued by a supplier. It is based on independently verified, systematic data and is presented as parameters in a set of categories describing the environmental

performance of the product or the service. It is relevant to all products and presents the information in a format that facilitates comparison between products. ISO 14025:2006 establishes the principles and specifies the procedures for developing Type III environmental declaration programmes and Type III environmental declarations. EN 15804 provides core rules for the creation of EPDs for building products and materials in the EU.

he EU FLEGT Facility has published a report titled ‘Effects of the EU Timber

Regulation and the demand for certified legal timber on business and industry in India’ that explores the potential effects of the EU Timber Regulation and the growing demand for forest certification on India’s timber industry. The study examines European companies’ procurement policies and practices; explores the implications of the EU Timber Regulation for the competitiveness of India’s timber products industry; and assesses the measures that selected Indian companies and multinational corporations operating in India are likely to take in response to changes Currently, the EU is India’s largest

India is the largest democratic economy in the world and growing fast, with a population of more than 1.2 billion. It is also an extremely diverse country. As of late 2012, India’s international trade in goods and services totaled around USD 1 trillion. Exports increased from USD 44 billion in 2001 to USD 244 billion in 2011 whilst imports increased from USD 50 billion to USD 352 billion within the same period. Given the size of the domestic market, multinational corporations (MNCs) are choosing to invest in India, including in the retail sector. The

exports and imports. The EU is also one of the biggest investors in India, although EU investment in India accounts for only 0.6 percent of its investment worldwide; therefore, the potential for the EU to increase trade and investment in India is substantial. Significantly, several European companies including Tesco, IKEA, Carrefour, Marks & Spencer and Tetra Pak have announced plans to scale-up their business in India by investing in the retail sector. As of early 2013, India was not considering entering into a VPA with the EU, largely because India has prohibited the export of timber in the form of unprocessed logs. Timber imports are permitted and liberalized, and India imports timber from across the world, including from countries that have, or are negotiating, a VPA. However, the export of timber products, including pulp and paper, is permitted, and the government has introduced several incentives to encourage the trade. The EU is a major market for India’s semi-processed and value-added timber products, including wooden handicrafts, pulp and paper, plywood and veneer and wooden furniture. Of particular note are the benefits for the wooden handicrafts industry,

which is dominated by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and provides employment to millions of artisans and woodworkers. The report argues that, in the absence of a VPA, credible forest certification can contribute towards the development of an effective due diligence system (DDS) for use by operators and traders to minimize their risk of trading in illegal timber or in products derived from illegal timber at some point in the supply chain. In India, use of international forest certification systems in the industry, particularly Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, has increased 10-fold during the past five years, partly because of the response towards FLEGT among buyers in the EU. The Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests is also in the process of establishing the Indian Forest Certification Council (IFCC), to develop a national forest certification system based on recommendations made by the National Forest Certification Committee in a report submitted in September 2010 and ministry consultation with stakeholders in 2011.

Further, credible forest certification needs to be promoted and implemented in both government-managed forests and plantations and private areas, including agroforestry, farm forestry and social forestry areas. The study also suggests that a government task force needs to be set up to study the ramifications of the EUTR. Technical support to address the risks involved with continuing business as usual (e.g. provide user-friendly materials at accessible designated focal points such as a government institution or local non-government institution) needs to be a part of the wider outreach program. The Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests is establishing the Indian Forest Certification Council as a step towards developing a national forest certification system. In the meantime, to support trade and investment in the industry, the Indian government has sought to minimize the approvals and records needed to comply with legality and other requirements. environmental claims, usually based on only one specific attribute such as ‘rapid renewability’ for bamboo, or ‘recyclability’ for steel or plastics. The true environmental impacts of materials cannot be summed up by one single attribute, and it is time that consumers and policy makers had the ability to truly compare the environmental footprint of the different products and materials they source. Reliance on science is long overdue and if green building systems and ‘green procurement’ policies are to have any credibility, they must be based on science, and all materials producers must play by the same rules. We now need to encourage the next logical step, which is to show that Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of materials, as well as energy usage are the only ways to truly assess the environmental impact of a building. In short, we should question the validity of LEED altogether.

India an important market for American Softwoods applications for different softwood species. In fact, Indian wood traders generally associate the word ‘softwood’ with lower density hardwoods, such as poplar, rather than with coniferous species like pine, as is the case in most other countries. With its growing market for softwood timber, India is becoming increasingly important for American exporters. A strong U.S. dollar may, in the short term, have affected volumes somewhat but longer term, Charles Trevor, the American Softwoods Director for India, foresees a time when American softwoods are better known by Indian buyers. It is expected that India’s growth trajectory of imports will not follow China’s explosive patterns, yet will still be one of the most important trends in global timber demand as India’s increasing need for imported wood and wood fiber is expected to be sustained for several decades.

In the absence of adequate supply from domestic sources, the nation will have to depend heavily on imports to meet its demand for timber. Market reports also indicate that over the last ten years India’s trade deficit in forest products has soared from USD 1 billion in 2001 to more than USD 5 billion in 2011. Due to the scarcity of domestic timber resources and rapidly growing demand, log imports in India have doubled since 2006 in order to meet the country’s growing appetite for wood products. India’s per capita consumption of paper and paperboard is less than 10kg (compared with 72kg/capita in China), but demand has been growing rapidly and consumption of recovered paper, wood pulp and non-wood pulp have nearly doubled over the past decade. When it comes to tackling climate change, no other material comes close to matching wood’s unique benefits. Whereas all other building materials contribute to the carbon emissions, which cause climate change. The Low Carbon Choice When it comes to tackling climate change, no other material comes close to matching wood’s unique benefits. Whereas all other building materials contribute to the carbon emissions which cause climate change, American softwoods sequester carbon, helping to slow the rate of climate change.

harvested and converted into wood products, the carbon remains stored in the wood during its service life, while new trees are planted to continue the cycle.

Forest Certification Resource extraction, the process by which trees are harvested, really is the only negative mark against wood. Whilst we can’t escape the fact that a tree must be harvested in order to make wood products, the U.S. forest industry has made tremendous strides in recent decades to reduce the impact of logging activities. A large number of positive changes in forest management practices have also resulted from forest certification programs, such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). These independent, third-party certification programs help to assure purchasers that the forests used to produce American softwood timber have been managed responsibly with regard to protecting wildlife, water quality, air quality, biodiversity, and reforestation practices. The result has been a dramatic improvement in American forest practices over the years. With the growing number of U.S. sawmills able to supply certified timber, buyers throughout India will have little difficulty sourcing third-party certified American softwood lumber whenever it is requested.

Moreover, the Accoya wood production process does not compromise the wood’s strength or machinability. The combination of UV resistance, dimensional stability, durability and retained strength means that Accoya wood offers a wealth of new opportunities to architects, designers and specifiers. resulted in the use of Accoya wood due to its durability, stability and high performance capabilities - making it perfect for any demanding outdoor application. According to RitikaaWood, the challenging element of this project was to secure the decking without fixing any supporting joists to the concrete or drilling any holes. Their solution was to bond the joist sub structure using Bostik’s exterior grade polyurethane single component adhesive. RitikaaWood have also implemented the decking with enough space below the boards to drain water during the monsoon season. The solution included a one-off four track, four pane sliding window system weighing approximately 70kg per pane, which allowed for easy and fast drainage of surface rain water from the tracks. Accoya has been used for windows and balcony doors on this particular project. The combination of heavy rainfall, high humidity levels and moisture from the sea causes rapid decay in most natural wood materials, due to expansion and contraction and their exposure to water, yet Accoya is so far standing up to these challenges. The European forestry industry recognizes that its future is inextricably linked with the protection and expansion of its forests. This ensures that more trees are planted than are harvested, in order to allow for natural losses and for the forest to be well stocked. More and more often forests are third-party certified for sustainable management practices, FSC and PEFC schemes being the most prominent among them. Furthermore, almost 39 million ha or 18 percent of the European forest area are set aside to conserve ecological and landscape diversity. More than 2.3 million ha are strict forest reserves, with no active human intervention. Sustainable Wood Buildings The European Commission’s roadmap for moving to a competitive lowcarbon economy in 2050, aims at cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 80-95 percent by 2050 in order to keep climate change below 2°C. This roadmap also points to the role of the built environment in achieving the 80 percent reduction target. All new buildings will have to be nearly zeroenergy and highly material-efficient, and policies for renovating the existing building stock will be put in place so that it is cost-efficiently refurbished at a rate of 2 percent per year. The cascade use of wood is based on the efficient use of this natural raw material: manufacturing of wood products, reuse, repair and recycling, as well as the final valorization of energy content. Indeed, wood ought to be used for its highest value before being converted into energy. Wood can be used, reused and recycled several times but it can only be burned once. The woodworking industry is not opposed to the use of wood as a renewable energy source, but this should only be done when no other industrial uses are possible any longer.
