Ecobuild, the world’s leading event for sustainable design, construction and the built environment, took place earlier in March this year. Fittingly, the founders of Ongreening.com, a new webbased global platform devoted to green building professionals and the profiling of green building technologies, decided to launch their platform at this year’s edition. They decided to build a pavilion for the event that was shaped like a ‘bird’s nest’ using plywood, and which was intended to echo

Rare opportunity to shape China’s impact on global forests produced the draft guidelines for sustainable overseas trade and investment in forest products. The meeting was part of a larger three-day event, which ran from March 25 - 27, which aimed to promote legal, sustainable trade and investment in forest products. Discussions were held on topics such as the role of China in the global timber trade; opportunities and changes for Chinese forestry enterprises; and the current status of production and trade in rosewood, a highly valuable but overexploited form of tropical timber. As a supporter of the event, the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) arranged for several of its partners from government agencies, civil society and private sector interests in Africa and Asia to attend. “China’s authorities are keen to learn from international experts about ways to ensure that Chinese companies dealing in timber and timber products do so sustainably,” said Xiaoxue Weng, a researcher in IIED’s China team. “This meeting is important because stakeholder consultation is a critical component of good forest governance,” said James Mayers, Head of IIED’s Natural Resources Group. “China’s influence on distant forests is growing. American Wood Council and Canadian Wood Council announce EPDs for Medium Density Fiberboard and Particleboard The American Wood Council (AWC) and Canadian Wood Council (CWC) have announced the release of new environmental product declarations (EPDs) for medium density fiberboard (MDF) and particleboard, bringing the available EPDs for North American wood products to nine. Based on international standards (ISO 14025 and ISO 21930), EPDs have worldwide applicability and include information about product environmental impacts such as use of resources, global warming potential, emissions to air, soil and water, and waste generation. “We are pleased to partner with the Canadian Wood Council to make these EPDs available. With the growing interest by the design community to select products for which EPDs are available, we are confident the MDF and particleboard EPDs will be popular,” said Robert Glowinski, President and CEO, AWC. EPDs are standardized tools that provide information about the environmental footprint of the products they cover. The North American wood products industry has taken its EPDs one step further by obtaining third-party verification from UL Environment, a business unit of Underwriters Laboratories and an independent certifier of

Malaysia: 2013 furniture exports top USD 2.2 billion 2013. In addition, Malaysia was the eighth ranked global furniture exporter. In recent years Malaysian exporters have been facing growing competition from Chinese furniture exporters as well as exporters in Vietnam where, in 2013, furniture exports were worth USD 4.5 billion. However, Industry analysts speculate that the furniture industry in Malaysia will expand to meet growing demand, particularly as manufacturers in China face increasing production costs, especially rising wages. Currently, Malaysian production costs are about the same as those in China but are not expected to increase significantly in the short term. Analysts also point out the success of Malaysian producers in meeting international quality and delivery requirements. The Malaysian government is making a determined effort to get manufacturers to move up the value chain and become ‘brand International demand for Malaysian furniture remained strong in 2013

Green jobs, sustainable forest management and wood processing in Southern Africa Forest resource depletion due to the effects of climate change, forest fires and failing reforestation, as well as sub-standard and wasteful logging and wood-processing practices, are some of the challenges faced by the forestry and wood industry in the countries of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC). In response, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have joined forces to assist with the development of sustainable forestry and wood-processing sectors in the region. Representatives of forestry education and training institutions from Malawi, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, together with FAO and UNIDO officials, met for a three-day project development meeting in George, South Africa. Participants at the meeting validated the findings of an initial situation analysis of a project titled ‘Strengthening Forestry Training Centers and Wood Industries for Green Employment in the SADC Region.’ One of the participants, Professor Josh Louw from the Nelson

FDI in timber processing tops USD 51 million in Burma foreign investment in timber processing. “We usually exported wood to India as logs before, but not anymore. So, businessmen there have no other choice but to come and do business inside our country,” said Htun. Burma is one of the last countries in the world that still allows for the export of unprocessed logs, and raw timber makes up the majority of its wood export. As a result, the country has failed to build up a woodprocessing industry that can add value to the vast quantity of timber that Burma produces. In an effort to reduce deforestation and the outflow of unprocessed timber, the government has banned the export of raw logs by April 1, 2014; however sawn wood exports will be allowed. India, China and Thailand are the biggest importers of Burmese timber, which is estimated to have a total worth of more than USD 1 billion per year, according to US-based research group Forest Trends, which estimates that about half of all timber is exported to India. CLT to make its breakthrough in the U.S. market A super-strong engineered wood product popular in Europe, known as cross-laminated timber (CLT), is coming to America under a joint venture involving a Coeur d’Alene-based lumber producer. The Austrian Johann Offner Group and Idaho Forest Group, which operates five mills in North Idaho, America, have announced plans to sign a partnership to produce cross-laminated timber (CLT), which will be distributed in the American market. “The family-owned companies together will market and distribute CLT building systems in the U.S. as soon as this year,” said Marc Brinkmeyer, Chairman of the Idaho Forest Group. “Idaho Forest Group, which distributes lumber all over the U.S. and also exports to Asia, will be the first company to sell CLT in this country.” Brinkmeyer has monitored the development of engineered wood for five years now and has seen ‘very cost-effective, attractive buildings’ made from CLT components. The US-based company will initially import CLT, but has plans to start producing it in 24-36 months. CLT was invented in 1996 by the Austrian company KLH, which now is a subsidiary of Johan Offner Group. CLT is presented as an alternative to traditional building components, such as concrete, masonry and steel. CLT consists of layers of lumber oriented at right angles to one another and glued together to form rigid panels with exceptional strength and stability. Those panels then are made into building components such as walls and floors.

Market prospects look good but price volatility is expected to increase Outcomes in 2014 are tied to a number of key drivers - both supply- and demand-related
T
he outlook for global lumber markets in 2014 hinge on demand forces in the key
consuming regions of the world, according to the International WOOD MARKETS Group. More specifically, it will be the lumber demand trends in the U.S., China and Western Europe that will shape global markets in 2014 and beyond. The following analysis by WOOD MARKETS is derived from its consultants’ extensive travels and market investigations that, in turn, are the basis of six of its strategic outlook reports and analyses that were produced in the second half of 2013. While the supply dynamics are becoming more constrained in some areas, the ability for sawmill capacity to ramp up production is an all too familiar dynamic that continues to overshadow the global lumber market. However, if global demand can achieve a 4 percent (or higher) gain in 2014, the outlook should be very good for lumber and sawnwood prices.

MARKET REPORT
In the November issue of the WOOD MARKETS Monthly International Report, a 3.4 percent gain is forecast for 2014, which will result in favorable - but not spectacular lumber prices. The U.S. market outlook for 2014 (and beyond) was assessed in great detail in WOOD MARKETS 2014 - The Solid Wood Products Outlook: 2014 to 2018. While there will be a definite tightening in supply side dynamics in Canada, U.S. output is expected to drive lumber production over the coming five-year period. However, it is the pace of U.S. housing starts that will set the tone for the lumber (and panel) markets in 2014. After a strong gain in new U.S. housing starts of 28.5 percent in 2012 (an increase of 175,000 over 2011), 2013 will end up with a more lackluster gain of only 18.5 percent (+145,000 units) or about 925,000 new housing starts. In 2013, the North American lumber supply chain became more balanced - starting in the second quarter - as production started to swamp overall demand. By the fourth quarter, a much better balance between supply and demand had developed, setting the stage for a good start to 2014. However, without strong gains in new residential housing starts increases of 20 percent of more (or 175,000 or more units), it is more likely to just be a ‘good’ year overall, but still could feature some supply chain shocks during the year that could create price spikes both up and down. strong market. North American lumber production is also expected to increase by almost 3 billion bf (+5.4 percent) in 2014 - an increase over 2013’s estimated gain of 2.6 billion bf (+5 percent). The stud lumber segment is expected to see the most volatility when U.S. housing starts increase rapidly (i.e., more than 175,000 units per year) and/or as the supply chain tightens. From the detailed analysis covered in WOOD MARKETS’ North American Stud Industry & Market Outlook to 2017, North American stud lumber capacity has been essentially unchanged since 2009 as some mills have closed while others have

Parts of the U.S. West are facing a tightening log supply and this could further constrain stud lumber production, especially if China bids up the price of log exports from the coast region. Aside from the U.S. West, stud lumber mills are expected to be operating near full capacity in the next few years with limited incremental production available. This scenario will require increasing volumes of imported studs from Europe to meet some of the increased demand. However, to attract the necessary

A bit of investigation into WPC
Wood-plastic composite (WPC) lumber is made primarily from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), recovered from the waste stream mainly in the form of used milk containers or recovered plastic bags, and from wood wastes (often planer shavings) that have been ground to a fine powder. A 50:50 mixture of plastic and wood is common. A few WPC products make use of lowdensity polyethylene, polypropylene, or polystyrene plastics and various materials other than wood, including
caution may be in order when considering such products. For instance, various sources document a number of problems that have been encountered with plastic composite decks and a recent study offers new information to help evaluate environmental impacts. Documented WPC problems include: • Mold and mildew development • Biodeterioration • Moisture cycling • UV degradation • Fading • Discoloration
Environmental impacts of decking production and use In March 2009, Canada’s FPInnovations Forintek Division released a 142-page summary of a life cycle assessment of western red cedar (WRC) siding, decking, and alternative products. WPC decking made using virgin polyethylene, and WPC decking made using 100 percent recycled polyethylene were among the product options examined. The study was done in compliance with the international life cycle inventory (LCI) and life cycle impact assessment

HG Timber Ltd. has now been trading for over 30 years having been founded by Nick
Goodwin who has spent his entire working life in the timber trade. The family run business has continued to grow, developing new source areas and widening its product portfolio, and is presently trading with over sixty-five countries and offering a wide range of products. Specializing in the sourcing of tropical and temperate timbers with a special focus on West Africa, the company prides itself on the knowledge and dedication of its team as well as its strong working relationships with its suppliers, all helping to provide a first class service to its buyers. The MENA region is an area, which is well used to rapid change and the businesses that serve it respond and develop to suit. And it is refreshing to note that one of these dynamic companies - NHG Timber - has been supplying the region with hardwood products consistently since 1996. As such, many readers will be familiar

There is truth in these assertions. But sustainability remains a hugely useful concept. It is a complex idea about meeting needs - for food, materials, and social welfare - without damaging the capacity of the planet to satisfy these needs over the long-term. The problem is not so much in the word itself, but in the fact that sustainability is so often poorly understood and rarely applied with rigor. Policy makers and practitioners have also often lacked the tools necessary to put genuine sustainability into practice. However, there is a growing band of people determined to change that. Many of these people are involved with wood. That is no coincidence. It’s no overstatement to say that the forestry sector invented the very idea of sustainability. The concept originates in forest management methods pioneered in Germany over two hundred years ago. In 1804, the German forestry lecturer Hartig described sustainability (which he referred to as ‘Nachhaltigkeitsprinzip’) in the following way: “Every wise forest director has to have evaluated the forest stands to utilize them to the greatest possible extent, but still in a way that future generations will have at least as much benefit as the living generation”. Since then, foresters have gained a deep understanding of natural eco-systems garnered from the experience of active management - both good and bad - over many generations. One key lesson from this experience is that managing human interventions with nature involves trade-offs. If you set aside all your forest for wildlife, you reduce availability of land for food or building materials. If too much timber is taken from a forest, you damage soils, waterways and biodiversity. Another lesson is that everything depends on context. Nature is enormously variable and managers have to work with this variability and not against it. Some forests and soils are resilient and lend themselves to intensive management. Others are fragile and may be better left untouched. Many of the greatest environmental disasters (the U.S. Image © AHEC

dust bowl, cattle farms in the Amazon) have come about from attempts to apply practices successful in one region in a different environment elsewhere. The final lesson is that managing this complexity requires information - a combination of accurate data (on forest dynamics, soil types, human needs etc.) and appropriate tools to ensure this is readily accessible to managers and practitioners. So for wood professionals, sustainability is a concept which is ripe with meaning, supported by increasingly clear definitions and standards, information and decision making tools. It’s a concept that needs to be nurtured, developed and explained. It’s also a concept that can be usefully applied to other sectors and industries, Image © Petr Krejci
always remembering the three lessons of trade-offs, context, and information systems. In recent years, great strides have been made in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the scientific analysis of the full environmental impact of products and materials from cradle to grave. More comprehensive LCA data is coming available on a widening range of industries. Computer modeling tools are being developed that can make this data readily available at critical points in the decision-making process. One area where the sustainability concept has particular power is in design. Designers are some of the most influential people on the planet – shaping the materials and products that we all consume. As such, the significance of the AHEC/RCA ‘Out of the woods’ project is in the fact that it brings the knowledge of sustainability inherent

to the wood sector together with the latest scientific understanding of environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) and the skills of the design community. It makes use of innovative new information systems so that a vast amount of data relating to the environmental impact of design decisions can be assessed even before a product makes it to market. It begins to show how genuine sustainability can be assessed in real time. Achieving this requires collaboration

using unprocessed wood to reduce energy inputs. Some increased their reliance on recycled materials or the waste products of other processes, such as woodchips and offcuts. Some focused on creating classic relatively simple and durable products with a ‘timeless’ feel. They reasoned that these are more likely to be kept for a long time, even as tastes and fashions change, thereby reducing disposal and the need for regular replacement. Others took an opposing view and worked towards ‘dematerialization’, creating products, which contain more air than matter. While not necessarily durable, these products can be disposed of regularly without creating much waste. The environmental profiles generated for each design suggest that none of these

Turkey grew to become the number one destination in terms of value. Interestingly, while the volumes exported to Pakistan were much higher than those shipped to Turkey last year, the unit values of the lumber were relatively low in comparison, at USD 529 per m3 and USD 590 per m3, respectively. Turkey’s imports of U.S. hardwood lumber last year were at an average unit value of USD 713 per m3, owing, in part, to the large volumes of white

particularly relevant to species that have an inherently low natural durability, such as American ash and tulipwood. After the process the moisture content of the timber is 4 to 6 percent. The equilibrium moisture content is permanently reduced, which means that the timber does not react to changes in humidity as drastically as in its natural state - in effect reducing the ability of the timber to absorb moisture and so greatly improving its stability. The durability is improved by removing the hemicelluloses and carbohydrates from the wood, which are the main food sources for wood destroying fungi. Recent independent durability testing conducted at the Italian timber research laboratory, CATAS, has shown that the durability of four American hardwood

AHEC and thermallymodified American hardwoods
AHEC has a mission to demonstrate the performance. versatility and aesthetic appeal of U.S. hardwood species, providing valuable inspiration, knowledge and confidence to designers, architects and manufacturers globally. For the London Design Festival in 2012, AHEC teamed up with designer Martino Gamper to create an imaginative 6 meter long bench, which featured a sophisticated patchwork pattern. The ‘Infinity Bench’ was designed as a highly functional outdoor seat made from thermally-modified American hardwoods supplied by Northland Forest Products in the United States. The ‘Infinity Bench’ celebrates color, texture and shape through the use of four different species ash, red oak, soft maple and tulipwood. AHEC has also collaborated with Ben Percy, a young Australian designer, to produce benches created from thermallymodified American ash supplied by Britton Timbers in Australia. Thermally-modified American hardwoods are in increasing demand in Australia, as they offer weather and decay resistance, making them ideal for the Australian outdoor lifestyle. Percy displayed his Ash benches at Sydney Indesign in August last year. Here in the Middle East, AHEC is currently in discussions with a leading Emirati designer to create an installation using thermallymodified American hardwoods, which will be on display in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Design Philosophy In an attempt to take luxury back to basics, the Sofitel The Palm Dubai has been modeled on a Polynesian village, fresh with green foliage, cabana-style fittings, and flowing water features that greet guests as soon as they step inside. The lush, green, vibrant environment is the brainchild of Mahnaz Liaghat, CEO, Mahnaz International Design & Planning, and formerly the Design Director of MIRK, who has paid particular attention to the island theme. A special feature of the ground floor is a ‘living wall’ vertical garden planted by renowned botanist Patrick Blanc. The garden seemingly stretches for miles before the eyes as guests’ first venture into the hotel, and provides a wonderful ‘outdoors indoors’ experience. The Koru, a traditional fern symbolizing the embodiment of new life, accentuates the special vertical garden. Its spiraling tendrils add movement and life to the botanical feature. In addition, corridors and smaller spaces have been specially designed to evoke the fresh feeling of a green village, with plenty of American ash, bamboo, and earthy-toned surroundings. Taking a stroll through the hotel is in fact like walking through the woods, with dappled sunlight peeking through the treetops. Image © Éric Cuvillier
According to Mahnaz, the client intended the resort to be a place of rediscovery and enchantment. As such, the design draws upon the style of the French Polynesian islands through a modern interpretation and translation of culture. Iconic symbols support the overarching design concept that gives the resort its unique and memorable identity. These symbols have been incorporated throughout the design to unify the feel and tone of the individual spaces. The positive message each carries with it reinforces the overall purpose of the resort itself. “Our challenge was how to make a six story building feel like a Polynesian resort. More importantly, we wanted to showcase a new way of defining ‘luxury’ through the experience the resort provided. In keeping with the ‘less is more’ ethos, we have designed the resort incorporating natural (first-generation) materials such as stone,

Polynesian themes Wherever guests wander, they are accompanied by traditional Polynesian motifs. Intricate details of the Koru, Gecko, Tiki, Turtle, Butterfly, and Tiare flower can be spotted on doors, walls, and floors; all of which symbolize peace, freedom, energy, connection, life, and new beginnings. A tiki comes in many forms, offering protection from evil spirits and its traits can take the form of what one wants the tiki to express. It is thus only fitting that the main entrance to the hotel features the tiki symbol on the massive wooden doors. According to Mahnaz, Image © Éric Cuvillier

similar to what is found inside the lobby, offering guests an invitation to explore. A space can be a simple transition, a passage to a paradise just beyond. As such, the lobby of the Sofitel The Palm Dubai carries the guest through to the resort outside, where personal rediscovery awaits. The ceiling is designed as a cabana and features the extensive use of American ash to reinforce the experience. In addition, simple and pure water features and vertical walls of floral plants surround the two sides of the lobby, immersing one in a lush green and vibrant environment found in traditional Polynesian villages. To emphasize the experience, lights bounce off the dynamic wood on the ceiling and combine with the green wall to give a truly spiritual meaning to this memorable space. Further, natural materials like water, stone, and wood, and the contrast of captured dark and light shadows and shades symbolize a journey through villages and passages to new experiences. Mahnaz adds: “The reed ceiling and a path draw you towards a ‘Wall of History’ that has been designed to recall aspects of a traditional Polynesian village and their infusion within a modern setting. The wall visually explains the meaning behind the symbols used within the design, and as you walk through the rest of the resort, you begin to feel the connection to the tradition and culture. In addition, vertical plantings and the sharp contrast of light and dark escaping from the edges through the retail corridor create a soft and pleasant connection. In addition, the impressive ballroom celebrates life and its richness through the use of American ash in its ceiling, which has been designed to represent the bottom of a canoe in the ballroom. Alfred Vesely Timber Export Alfred Vesely Timber Export was established in Austria in 1946. Today, the company remains a traditional wood exporting company, which mainly deals in the export of sawn softwoods to the Middle East. As one of the leading suppliers of sawn softwood to the Middle East and North and Eastern African countries, the company primarily deals in spruce and fir woods and, to some extent, pinewood as well. In addition to the MENA region, markets in other countries are also being developed. As Austria has no direct access to the sea, the company ships via the Adriatic port of Koper in Slovenia. Through its office in the port, the company is able to dry, soak, press package, bundle and label the wood in preparation for export. Subject to the terms of sale, the company can deliver European softwoods (spruce, fir, pine) in addition to Southern Yellow Pine and Dark Red Meranti. The sawn softwood is delivered in 0-III Lev quality in accordance with the Image © Alfred Vesely

Manufacturing capability Accoya and Tricoya are produced using a process called Wood Acetylation, which increases the amount of ‘acetyl’ molecules in wood, thereby changing its physical properties. When carried out to a sufficient level throughout the wood, this process protects wood from rot by making it ‘inedible’ to most microorganisms and fungi, without - unlike conventional treatments - making it toxic. is also high on countries’ agendas. This would involve the recuperation of a different range of products, from railroad ties to flooring and construction debris, which will be diverted from landfill and find a new life. Once again, one more step towards a greener economy. Another important step towards the recognition of the many virtues of wood is the transition of the construction sector towards sustainability and green building. Increasingly, codes and regulations are addressing issues related to environmental impact and material performance, including the environmental impacts generated by the life cycle of the structure itself and its components. In some instances this has led to the increased use of wood as a low impact building material, generating little waste, being carbon neutral and thermal efficient while saving time during the construction phase. Project Qatar’s 2013 edition surpassed all expectations, including its previous edition in 2012, thanks to an overwhelming response from both exhibitors and visitors. According to the organizers, the 2013 edition hosted 2,100 local and international exhibitors from 50 countries spread across 62,000 sqm of indoor and outdoor exhibition space. In addition, the event featured over 3,000 brands and marked a record increase of 16 percent in surface area, and 45 percent in international participation. The show provides a unique and dynamic platform for buyers and suppliers to make contacts and drive future developments in Qatar’s multi-billion construction sector. In addition, exhibitors benefit from massive exposure to premier regional agents, dealers, buyers and distributors. To maximize the number of exhibitors, trade buyers, business developments and opportunities, Project Qatar 2014 will be held concurrently with Qatar Stone Tech 2014 and Heavy Max 2014.
The third edition of Wood Guangzhou, a key exhibition for wood and wood products in China, will take place at the Pazhou Complex from May 12 - 14. Over 180 industry-related enterprises from USA, Canada, Malaysia, Russia, Germany, Portugal and Serbia participated in Wood Guangzhou 2013, and the organizers are confident of exceeding those numbers this year. According to the organizers, the reason to host the show in Guangzhou was because over 21 percent of China’s wood manufacturers are located in South China’s Guangdong Province, which is China’s largest furniture-manufacturing base. As such, Wood Guangzhou 2014 will be an influential platform for the wood and woodworking industry. The show is being organized in light of the fact that the consumption of wood in China has increased at rates higher than the GDP growth. This can be attributed to the fact that as one of the world’s largest producing states of wood furniture and wood floor, China has a huge demand for wood. In addition, houses built with wood are increasing in popularity and so the applications for wood not only internally but for structural uses is also increasing. The fair attracts companies involved in the trading of logs, sawn timber and all kinds of added-value wood products. This year, the organizers have announced that they expect over 650 exhibitors over the 12,000 sqm of exhibition space.
