ituated in a peaceful, rural village on the outskirts of Basingstoke, Ms Kaye had the opportunity to build a new home for herself on the site of the tennis court belonging to her existing period thatched cottage.
She was keen to construct a contemporary style home with lots of light but also a home of character. The design and quality of the windows was a very important aspect of the overall build.
The finished house is a stunning oak framed building which has been clad in cedar. It is largely open plan and the beautiful timber windows and French doors perfectly complement the interior style. Having taken inspiration from a gardening magazine, Ms Kaye comments “I love the
natural look of the house. It is not just a typical new build. I didn’t want to live in an L-shaped box!”.
Ms Kaye was recommended to a local builder’s merchant for windows but she was uninspired by the range on offer. She was then recommended Timber Windows by a friend who had been impressed with the service and products.

Having visited her local showroom, she explains
“Everyone in the showroom was really helpful. I did not know exactly what I wanted and really appreciated their patience in showing me different options and helping me to choose”.
Ms Kaye opted for large French doors with sidelights that maximise light and allow an uninterrupted view of her garden, grazing horse and hens. She also opted for a selection of flush casement windows around the house, a stable door and a Kingston style front door. The end result are windows and doors that perfectly match her vision for the exterior of the property.

This charismatic Victorian terrace, built in 1885, sits in the heart of Harrogate. Miss McKenzie acquired the property 10 years ago, and, other than general maintenance and decoration, has not had to undertake any major work. The sash windows were the originals, and although they’d been refurbished in the past, they were still draughty, cold and hard to operate. “In winter, you could see the curtains blowing in the wind” says Miss McKenzie.
A good friend had previously used Timber Windows in 2011 and been very happy, therefore recommending Miss McKenzie visit her local showroom in Harewood to see what was available, “the showroom was
amazing, what a lovely setting
and the people were all lovely too” she adds.
Due to her property being in a conservation area, sympathetic, like-for-like, wooden replacement sash windows were a must. In total 16 sliding sash windows were installed, all manufactured in Engineered European Redwood, which is the same timber as the original windows, but now constructed in a technically advanced way. All the windows were pre-finished in ‘White’ with new decorative cover boards internally.
Although visually the property remains full of traditional charm, the new ultra-efficient double-glazed units filled with krypton gas make the world of difference to the feel of the home. “The difference is massive” says Miss McKenzie “It was very hard to keep the house warm in winter due to all of the draughts. Heat retention is so much better now that I even have the windows open on occasion to allow a flow of air”.

Retaining and respecting the look of neighbouring properties in a local area
should always be an important factor to consider when choosing new windows
and doors. This gives an area a distinct character that becomes synonymous
over time. In Bristol, on this street of terraced homes, Mr Mein has had a new front door installed which perfectly complements the other houses on his road.
“It was important for us to retain the look of the street, the majority of our neighbour’s doors all have a similar style.” After taking inspiration from his neighbours, Mr Mein specified a stunning new Bevington entrance door in a ‘Harewood Grey’ finish for his home. This features traditional ‘bolection’ style mouldings on the panels, as well as Polished Brass ironmongery, including a large Doctor’s knocker and a Medium sized letter plate from Samuel Heath. The beautiful toplight on the new door is a bespoke stained-glass design and is a close replica of Mr Mein’s neighbour’s door.
“We are gradually renovating the entire house and with everything we do, our focus is to add value, and the new door does exactly that” explains Mr Mein. “The stone work around the door was crumbling as well and this has now been replaced. The new door is fantastic and I believe we now have the best-looking house on the street!”

UPDATE “We wanted to make choices that didn’t date”, says Mrs Valentine of the Oxfordshire home that her and her family have renovated since purchasing it two and a half years ago.
Mrs Valentine’s home is a former farm house, situated in the midst of acres of farmland, “the house was red brick, somewhat dated
looking and in need of an overall update; I did feel a little apologetic to the farmers for changing their house!”
The project was a substantial undertaking, meaning the family lived in the annexe of the property for 15 months while the work was BEFORE
carried out, “we wanted to achieve a classic look, that was sympathetic to the house, its setting
and history.”
“I had a project that Timber Windows had been involved in, saved on my Pinterest, as this provided the inspiration for what I was aiming for.”

The homeowners described the house as robust and having good proportions, allowing for a sympathetic refurbishment that also involved extending the living areas along with the roofline for a third floor. It is on this new upper floor that the French doors have been put to great use on the Juliet balcony. The next stage in their project is to convert the annexe, giving it a barn appearance.
“Our aim has been to retain traditional styling, while adapting it to contemporary living, with the windows and doors playing a major role in both the appearance and our enjoyment of our home” Mrs Valentine concludes.

ENDURING ELEGANCE
The Old Bell in Oxfordshire, a former public house, had its Timber Windows upgrade back in 2006. Revisiting the owners, Mr & Mrs Speke some 13 years after their initial installation, we were delighted to see that their home is looking just as beautiful now, as it did in 2006. Dating to the early 1800s, The Old Bell became a dedicated residence in the early 1990’s. Describing the time prior to the installation of the new windows, Mr & Mrs Speke explain, “we wanted to keep the character of the house and to have
the same style as the older, inadequate windows. We checked with the local planning authority to see if it was listed; it isn’t. We could have chosen plastic therefore and a different, ‘modern’ style, but felt that this would destroy the appearance of the property.” “We remember having great confidence in Timber Windows and felt very assured that a good job would be done. This was based on the personal contact along with the care and attention to detail given at the planning stage.” As is often the case with old buildings, they come with their challenges, and The Old Bell was no exception. One of the old bay windows was discovered to be crumbling and in a dangerous state, “the fitting team were patient, communicated
well and took their time to do an exceptional job; they were true craftsmen and really knew what they were doing” describes Mr Speke. Flush Casements finished

Keeping the windows, their appearance and performance at their best, the owners have embraced the routine and occasional maintenance required, “we’ve kept the windows well maintained, ensuring
they’ve been cleaned regularly, and like anything, the better they are looked after, the better they will repay you. The windows have had one repaint a couple of years ago.” This has demonstrated that the coating performance has outperformed its expected schedule even given the nature of the busy road that the property faces on to.
“In summary, after all this time, our feelings about the windows and the difference they have made to our house, has not changed, we would make exactly the same choices again. It has been reassuring to have a company that was fair, communicated well and carried out an excellent job at a good price, with the focus on doing everything right and giving attention to detail.”

This beautiful, traditional English cottage was built in the 1570s, undergoing renovations and extensions throughout the 1600s and the Victorian era. “Since the 1960s it had been
rented and it was never properly maintained unfortunately. A lot of the windows had been painted shut as a result” comments Mr Manning. The cottage is situated within a conversation area in rural Norfolk, meaning Mr Manning had a strong need to replace his old, rotting single-glazed windows with a modern-day option that retained the period aesthetics.
“Consultations with the local Conservation Officer resulted in the acceptance of double-glazed, wooden sash windows and cottage style windows for the dormers, all to closely match the originals.”
With his newly gained permissions, Mr Manning began his research online to find a capable supplier.
“While researching on Google, I came across Timber Windows. I was very impressed with the number of renovation projects they have undertaken on listed buildings and those situated in conservation areas. This gave me a lot of faith and confidence that they would be the right fit for my cottage.”

The owner of this stylish terraced townhouse has taken the opportunity to give their entrance-way a bold new look, by exploring the various options available from our range, whilst giving a nod to the door it replaced. The Kingston door is a classic style, providing a traditional aesthetic, with its pairing of raised and fielded panels and glazed areas. The choice of a ‘Burgundy’ finish provides a refreshing new look. It was important on this occasion to retain the toplight, a key feature of all the homes in the street, meaning the new door and frame is fitted below this original panel. The ironmongery has been selected as both an update and giving a sense of familiarity to its predecessor, in Polished Chrome. A Doctor’s knocker, medium sized letter plate, Profile

The glass area of the new door, allows more light into the hallway, and paired with the ‘Canterbury’ etched glass, a level of obscurity for privacy is added, as well as being an ornate feature. tained glass can be traced back to multiple ancient civilisations and cultures worldwide with earliest records placing it in the 7th century in Britain. Stained glass has a long history in Roman, Egyptian and Medieval society, and is still a staple of British heritage today, almost synonymous with Christianity and visual story telling from the Bible.
Its use, however, became more widespread throughout the centuries, being more commonly used in the Catholic faith with its gothic styling now a prominent feature in cathedrals.
In the 15th century, stained glass started to become a fashionable addition to residential homes, with designs detailing coats of arms and family shields being a popular choice in larger homes and public buildings.
Much more than an ancient story-telling medium, stained-glass designs are an art form and can enhance many settings.
Mr & Mrs Phillips wanted to update all the windows and doors in their West Midlands home, those with regular glass and those with special feature patterns, while ensuring that the unique glass designs were retained.

The old glass was beyond the point of re-use but we were able to recreate the designs in all cases to directly replace them, in turn also making them much more energy efficient with the use of modern glazing.
Extensive use of stained glass was present, including the front door and side panels, a circular feature window in the kitchen and a pairing of an ecclesiastical style door and window. With their pointed arch heads, they make a bold statement and the new glass is a near perfect match, now more vibrant than ever.

It really sealed the deal for us to be able to see products in situ and the high standard of workmanship, when Eddie took us to visit previously completed projects nearby says Mr & Mrs Markwell about how delighted they were to have such care and consideration given to them during the buying process, and their visits to the Woodbridge showroom in Suffolk.
Making the right decisions for their rural Suffolk village cottage, with origins to the 1400s was important for the Markwells. Their house is bursting with original charm and character, inside and out, including stunning beams, stone floors and fireplaces; the windows, however, were not adding to the appeal.
“The house was derelict for years, and then was renovated in the 1970s by the previous owner. The windows put in at this time were timber and single glazed, but were a real mis-match, as the owner at the time liked to gather and make use of old things� Mr & Mrs Markwell describe.

Now with finely constructed, sensitive joinery in place, they explain, “we simply
didn’t realise how awful and inappropriate the old windows and doors were, until the new ones went in. tunning new sash and casement windows as well as a new entrance door have greatly improved the façade of this handsome 1830s Georgian property in the Suffolk countryside. The homeowner, Mr Heneghan comments “When we purchased the house, we planned to carry out extensive refurbishment work, including adding an extension and conservatory at the rear. We had to move out while all this work was going on”. Part of Mr Heneghan’s plan was to replace the original windows and doors. “The original sash windows had glass that was extremely thin, and they rattled like mad, especially when Chinooks from the nearby air base flew overhead! They were rubbish, cold and had to go”. After meeting with a member of the team from Timber Windows of Woodbridge, new slim sash windows and a set of cottage casements were specified for the home.
“We planned for the work to be undertaken in two stages. The windows were to be first and then we returned to replace the front door in the second stage”. The new front door is a Chadlington design in a ‘Harewood Grey’ finish and the toplight is a close replica to the original; a feature that Mr Heneghan was very keen to retain.
“The new windows and doors have made such a difference to our home. The house no longer rattles, it’s much quieter and not to mention, much warmer as well” explains Mr Heneghan. The new entrance door has impressed Mr Heneghan so much that he comments “the back door is a similar style and we are now looking to get this replaced by Timber Windows as well”. When asked if he was happy with the results, he responded, “who wouldn’t be! They are well designed and constructed, and look as good as the originals”.

Factory applied micro-porous coatings providing maximum protection but minimal maintenance
Glazing units almost twice as effective as ordinary double glazing
All of our windows and doors are factory painted prior to assembly, providing complete protection from moisture absorption and maximising longevity. Every product receives a base coat of timber preservative, then a primer coat, followed by two coats of micro-porous paint. You should expect our coatings to last from five to eight years without the need for re-treatment. Should you wish to change the colour of your windows then redecoration is a very simple task as there is no sanding down required. An average window should take about thirty minutes to re-decorate.
All of our windows and doors incorporate double-glazed units with enhanced thermally insulating glass, providing an extremely low U-value. We further improve the efficiency of the unit by filling the cavity with argon gas and using low conductivity spacer bars to minimise edge losses. The result is a 1.1 W/m2K centre pane U-value. This means an 80% increase in energy savings compared to single glazing, and a 45% increase in energy savings compared to ordinary double-glazing.

Ventilation channels protect against the failure of double glazed units. In standard systems misting can occur when glazing units are allowed to sit in water trapped within the frame.
In standard timber systems, paint is prone to cracking at the point where the bead meets the window frame. By rebating the glazing bead over the sash we conceal the joint, which eliminates the problem.

The use of multi-layer timber for windows and doors is long established in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, but very rare in Britain. The multi-layer structure used as standard throughout our range is particularly effective in resisting warping and twisting, as the opposing grains even out natural moisture movement. It is the twisting of timber during wet weather, more than the swelling itself, which causes standard wooden windows and doors to stick.

S F O R M AT I O N “When we bought the house, it had a ‘mock-Tudor’ style that to us felt very dated and tired and we were keen to change it as soon as possible” explains Mrs Darvill when describing the origins of her now contemporary styled home in Essex. “We wanted to put our stamp on the property, so we planned to change the façade and modernise the home.” Mr and Mrs Darvill visited their local Timber Windows showroom in Ingatestone, and having viewed the products on display there, decided almost instantly that this would be the right choice for their home. As part of their renovation project for the house, contemporary styled flush casement windows finished externally in ‘Flatiron Grey’ and featuring horizontal glazing bars were specified across the property. “What we love about timber is that we could have any colour we wanted and the new grey of the windows really give the house that modern edge we desired. rural Somerset, this former mill and manor house with origins back to the year 982, owned by Mr & Mrs Lloyd has received a sympathetic update. “The windows were replaced 14 years ago but the builders and
architects specified windows of an inadequate quality that had already rotted!” Mrs Lloyd comments.
When searching for new windows and doors, Mr & Mrs Lloyd took the time to consider different companies to ensure they bought the right products for their property. “We felt our choice was quite restricted, either

couple of fields away, this grand 1930s house in the West Midlands has seen a transformation by Timber Windows.
Mrs Wasse has lived here since 1987 and comments “originally the house had Crittall
windows. We then switched to uPVC and have now decided to replace these with timber”. Mrs Wasse came across Timber Windows through a friend who had also chosen our products for their home a few years ago. “They are very happy with their windows
and doors, and recommended Timber Windows to me”. Mark from the Timber Windows of Harborne showroom was on hand to help Mrs Wasse with every stage of the project. In fact, a new bay window at the front of the property has been constructed based on Mark’s suggestion to balance out the front façade with the stepped front to the left.
Mark also made a number of other suggestions leading to a set of patio doors being replaced with French doors, and a brand new door added to the decking area which has its own unique beach style.

s a relatively recent build, at only 12 years old, it is perhaps surprising
that the owners of this Oxfordshire property have needed to replace their windows and doors already, “we’ve lived in the house for 5 years and came to realise that the windows were rotten and poor quality; I think the builders must have got them out of a skip” says Mrs Brimacombe.
Having lived with windows and doors that were ill fitting and had big gaps around them, the homeowners were understandably keen to make well-informed decisions and avoid the poor choices made by the builders.

A happy home riginally built in the 1830s, this grand, late Georgian property on the outskirts of Birmingham has returned to its roots thanks to Mrs Jacobs and Timber Windows.
“Roughly 10 years before I bought the house and moved in, it was owned by a builder who carried out a renovation. He decided, for expedience to install large pane aluminium windows across the house which were quite frankly, terrible!” With a number of the windows on the property rotting, Mrs Jacobs was desperate to replace them as soon as she could.“It was always my intention to have traditional and more appropriate sash windows installed but I needed

The building’s origins are as an orangery to a manor house that once stood nearby, providing a bright environment to cultivate produce for use on the estate. Much later, the structure was used as a CHICKEN SHED!

bout 15 years ago I visited some friends in Leeds – they had just moved into a three storey terraced house within walking distance of Headingley cricket ground. The area was deeply unpopular in those days, but they could see the potential in both the house and the area.
Careful research had unearthed original images of the property – giving them vital information on the design of the original front door and sash windows. Once the horrible plastic versions were replaced, the true appearance of the house was revealed – and after a year or so of hard work they made a tidy but modest profit on their now beautiful home.
Like Headingley, many towns and cities in the UK can readily point to a ‘conservation area’ – one where individual streets and sometimes just small areas are restored to their former glories. And with soaring property prices, the incentive to improve rather than move, becomes that much stronger.

ells in Somerset is often described as England’s smallest city; situated within it is this former
stable block that enjoys views of the cathedral, home to Mr & Mrs Hilton and their family.
“We’ve lived here for almost 8 years, with the house being in my wife’s family since the early 1980’s when it was converted to a residence by her grandparents” Mr Hilton describes. A stone’s throw from the cathedral, as stables, the building formed part of the ecclesiastical estate in its original form.

“From its 80’s conversion, it had many undesirable features, including very fussily designed wooden windows for the style of the property” Mr Hilton says. The family opted to change the style of the windows and doors completely to let more light in and take advantage of the views that were previously quite obscured. The new front door is a custom design in a contrasting shade of ‘London Grey’ featuring the house name, etched into sandblasted glass. “We can now see the Cathedral clearly from the upper windows; Phil from the showroom advised on having only a partially obscured bathroom window, so we could enjoy the view while still have our privacy.” “The house is also quite near a main road through the city, but once inside we just don’t hear it now.”

hen carrying out a revamp on our homes, we can often draw inspiration from its history, the neighbours or the surroundings, but what if you live on a relatively new, purpose built estate like Mr and Mrs Forrest’s home in Brentwood, Essex?
“Our house was built in the late 1990s, and most houses had ‘mock-sash windows’ from new – lots of neighbours have changed the originals now so we looked around the estate for ideas but didn’t see anything we liked, as lots have opted for uPVC which we feel ruins the look of the house” Mr Forrest explains. Mr and Mrs Forrest instead saw a similar style of house in the Timber Windows brochure, “we thought the front door colour really suited

r & Mrs Cooper put down roots in this rural Somerset cottage, around three years ago, “we have carried out lots of work on the house, having bought it from the family of the deceased, former owner. Some of the windows here were plastic and honestly quite hideous; we believe these to have been recent replacements, made for a quick sale before it went on the market.” The windows and doors of a wooden construction that did remain, were all rotten, “they were pretty bad, the kitchen window even had a hole in it that let water in, when it rained” Mrs Cooper describes. The cottage dates to the 1700s and has had sympathetic extensions added in the past thirty years, with Mr and Mrs Cooper wanting to ensure they respected the history of the property too, “we knew we always wanted to have timber windows put in throughout; it’s the only style and material that would really suit the house.” “We don’t enjoy living in a mess so we didn’t want to hang around with changing the windows and doors when we moved in – we got on the case right away, carrying out research online and visiting the lovely shop in Clifton.” “Through a process of elimination, comparing other suppliers, we chose Timber Windows – I was very excited to visit the Timber Windows showroom based on what I’d seen online, and it didn’t disappoint”

aving moved into this 1878 Victorian property, the Roberts family begun undertaking a large-scale renovation of the home right away.
“We moved in seven years ago and started renovating the house then. We gave the builder at the time free reign when it came to the windows and unfortunately the choice he made was poor. It had only been 7 years and they already needed replacing!” At the time of purchasing the property, it was in a poor state, with many of the original Victorian features and detailing stripped out in favour of modern detailing. It was Mrs Roberts goal to have as many of these original features put back into the house as possible. As part of this project, Mr and Mrs Roberts scoured the length of the country to find suppliers of reclaimed bricks and other materials, that would perfectly match the originals of the house. After their previous experience with the builder, Mrs Roberts project managed the latest works closely herself, and came across the Timber Windows showroom in Harborne where she received some expert advice from the team.

The Roberts have also added a new extension to the rear of the home, which now houses their kitchen and dining area. A set of bi-fold doors and large, fixed casement windows were installed here, again making the most of the view to the outdoors. All products have been finished in ‘White’, feature Chrome ironmongery and are manufactured in Engineered European Redwood.
“The team at the showroom have done such a fantastic job of recreating the original windows and the installation process was simple! arly photos of this magnificent property, built in the early 1900s, show it was originally appointed with beautiful sash windows,
“when we moved in a few years ago, the house had been decked out with PVC windows by the previous owner, a DIY fanatic who’d added unsightly bays that weren’t even supported, and had to go” the homeowners, Mr & Mrs Rees explain. Once part of farmland in a Cambridgeshire village, the house had become dark and dreary with time, “as well as changing the windows and

Four identical Venetian sash windows are accompanied by a smaller sash window; all of which are our slim Hidden Spring specification and are finished in the shade of ‘Smoke Cream’. The door is also manufactured to a townhouse style, meaning an escutcheon replaces the handle while utilising the same multi-point locking mechanism. The changes have given the house a fresh new look, more suited to its character and adding a healthy helping of charm too. Mr and Mrs Rees comment, “the sash windows have flooded the rooms
with light, where some of the interior spaces had previously been quite dark. It’s also never been a house we could keep warm, however since having the new windows and door we’ve found it much easier to keep the house at a comfortable temperature.”

aving lived in this former farmhouse in the West Midlands for 20
years, Mr and Mrs Hughes decided that it was finally time for their windows to be replaced. “The original windows were at least 50 years old! They were in a dire state and many wouldn’t even open.”
With a desire for new windows that were both appropriate for the style of the farmhouse and also high performing, Mr & Mrs Hughes spent time looking for the right supplier and discovered Timber Windows. “We knew that wooden windows were our best option. It wouldn’t feel or look right for any other material to be installed as it just wouldn’t be appropriate for the period and style of this house” explains Mr Hughes.
New, authentically styled slim sash windows and flush casement windows in Engineered European Redwood have been installed throughout the property. All have a ‘White’ finish, with Brass ironmongery and 18mm astragal glazing bars resulting in a traditional appearance.
Alongside the new windows, a Westonbirt conservation door with a toplight was also specified. This is finished in the shade of ‘Talisman’, features Polished Brass ironmongery from Samuel Heath and has original, uniquely designed signature glass that gives the door a stunning, individual appearance.

The new windows and door have made an immediately noticeable difference. Mr Hughes comments “we live on a busy road with a lot of passing traffic. Since the new windows have been added, we haven’t heard anything from outside.”
As well as the reduced noise benefits, Mr Hughes also comments “everything was installed just before Christmas and the house has felt noticeably warmer over this past winter compared with previous years. We are delighted!”

“We were extremely surprised how quickly all the windows and doors were fitted in place with very little mess and disruption; testament to Timber Windows’ surveyor, the measurements he made meant that our new windows and doors fitted perfectly” Mrs Moulton says of the experience with Timber Windows for her Essex home, “ironically I spoke to a friend who was having windows installed by another company at the same time and I couldn’t help feeling a little smug when she told me of the chaos in her house and all the ‘making good’ that was going to be required afterwards”.
Carrying out a full renovation of their Victorian, 1880s home, Mr & Mrs Moulton wanted to give the house a more modern appearance without detracting from the character, “we felt that by replacing the old French doors with bi-folds, we could achieve that” Mrs Moulton explains.
In addition, the homeowners, wanted to make it a more comfortable house to live in, “our house was very draughty, often the wind would whistle through our old doors and windows, and in the winter, we would fight a losing battle to keep it warm.”
Having looked around at window and door suppliers for over a year, Mr & Mrs Moulton had struggled to find the right combination of quality, workmanship and style that they were looking for, along with the offer of a high specification and being sympathetic to the age of the property, “I happened to see the Timber Windows advert in the Waitrose magazine that I picked up in store one day and realised the showroom was nearby. Once in the showroom, we realised the product met all of our criteria and the search was over!”
The house has received a selection of new items, including an arch topped Norham door in ‘Black’ with a ‘White’ frame as well as two sets of Bi-Fold doors, also in ‘Black’. Elsewhere, ‘White’ cottage casements with lead detailing, have also been fitted.

his sensitively designed housing area was built just five years
ago in an Oxfordshire village; unfortunately, not everything was as it should have been, with the contractor cutting a few corners when it came to the windows and doors, as owner Mrs Passmore explains, “they used
poor quality, wooden windows that hadn’t been treated and had no undercoat, instead they glossed straight onto the bare surface on site, and inevitably they all failed. After making a claim against them, we were awarded compensation to get suitable replacements.” Selecting their new windows and doors, Mr & Mrs Passmore chose a ‘French Grey’ finish throughout. The new front door is our Chalfont design and has Polished Brass ironmongery providing the finishing touches, while the Lipped Casement windows have graceful 18mm astragal glazing bars.

r and Mrs Bell have been customers of Timber Windows for over 10 years. They originally specified new timber windows and doors for their previous family home and after being highly impressed with the end result, have now returned for their new house in Harrogate.
It’s not every day that houses like this come up for sale. This turn of the century property boasts quirky styling and certain deco features. Over the years it has been extended and added to, later becoming a care home.
Mr and Mrs Bell fell in love with the building, seeing the potential of what could be. Although it’s not in a conservation area, they were keen to choose timber to replace the windows, “we felt plastic would devalue the house and the cost saving wasn’t enough to warrant it” says Mr Bell.

After paying close attention to similar properties in the area, Mr and Mrs Bell opted for flush casement windows (the same as we installed in their previous home), finished in ‘White’ with a ‘T-Bar’ glazing design which adds detail without entirely obstructing the view. The installation of 26 windows and 4 doors was carefully timed with other work that was taking place around the property, Mr Bell comments “the fitting was very quick and extremely efficient considering the scale of the project”.

PICTURE Mr & Mrs Baker’s Sussex house, overlooking the South Downs has an idyllic outlook and they’ve carried out substantial work to make it into their family home, since moving in three years ago, “as well
as the windows and doors, we have also replaced the roof…there’s still lots to do internally but we can do this gradually, while enjoying time with our young family.”
Originally a game keeper’s cottage, dating to 1840 it still had some original doors and windows, and whilst the owners admit they were lovely to look at, they were simply letting in a lot of draughts and not doing their job very well.

A large number of flush casement windows and French doors were installed throughout, including those with regular astragal bars and those with gothic style bars. Additionally, entrance doors in a colour complementary to Fired Earth ‘Carragheen’ were also installed with Antique Brass Unlacquered ironmongery.
The later part of the house had the gothic bars, which have been retained and also used now in other nearby windows to give a consistent look.
Mrs Baker summarises her feelings on the project, “we’re very happy
with how it has all turned out and the service we have received”.

With stunning views of the nearby cathedral and on the doorstep of its very own church, this former rectory in a Cambridgeshire village has been modernised for family living while its authenticity and character remain fully intact, retaining original features such as flooring and fireplaces from its 1860s origins. Moving into the new home with their young family a couple of years ago, Mr & Mrs Waterson quickly realised that the windows and doors were in need of urgent attention,
“it was immediately obvious that we needed new windows; we hung ridiculously thick curtains to keep the draughts out but they were rotten and even had insects nesting in them…this became the first job in the house as a result”. A sizeable property such as this requires a lot of heating to feel comfortable, so the owners had eco-heating installed throughout and it was therefore important for them that draughty, old windows didn’t undo the efforts being made to retain the warmth.
“We were keen to maintain the look of the building and replicate the window design” Mrs Waterson explains, “the glazing bars on our new windows are particularly elegant, and this was something we really noticed when researching window suppliers, as products from other companies just seemed to have bars that were too chunky to suit the design”.

Flush casement windows were installed throughout, some towering at over 2.6 metres tall, and all were given a painted finish in the shade of ‘Porcelain’ externally and ‘OffWhite’ internally, as well as 18mm astragal bars. The front door has the same finish as the windows, with the toplight featuring the sandblasted house name. There was one change however that Mr & Mrs Waterson made to their new windows, compared to those they replaced, “we decided to be brave with the colour choice, choosing
‘Porcelain’ over the traditional white, as we’d seen other houses using soft greys like this and we’d been impressed with the effect. We’re really happy we made this choice, the finish is one of softness and they match really well with the tone of the brickwork.” “We are very pleased with the windows and doors; we get a lot of people passing by and commenting on them, many are convinced they’re the originals that have been painted nicely, which shows that it’s been a good job of matching the old ones”. aving moved in some 2 decades ago, the Lang family had bought the house of their dreams on the edge of rural Leeds. The original steel and wooden framed windows were tired and letting in unwanted draughts and condensation. Mr and Mrs Lang opted for PVC replacements as this was the ‘done thing’ at the time. “We put in plastic windows about 20 years ago, in
hindsight they never looked right for the house” says Mr Lang. He was correct, the style and layout really detracted from the appearance of this beautiful home. “My wife and I had put all of our time and effort into our business, so sadly our house had suffered and was in need of thorough refurbishment”. 106 www.timberwindows.com

Initially interested in replacing and adding doors to the back of their home as part of a smaller project, Mr and Mrs Lang called into our Harewood showroom to discuss the options. Following a home survey by one of our team, we put together a Photoshop illustration of what the front of the property could look like with the correct style of window and a suitable colour. “We wanted a
quality product so as to complement the stature of the property. We were instantly impressed with the finish and quality of the products on show” says Mr Lang.
French Grey flush casements with a single horizontal glazing bar at the front give the whole property a cleaner, more balanced look. The rear of the property looks out over mature gardens so we went for large expanses of glazing and removed the horizontal bar so not to detract from the view.
A mixture of Bi-Folding and French doors were used across the rear to suit the individual rooms and how they were used.
Although this installation was part of a much larger renovation, it’s clear to see the difference the correct product can make to a home.
