Photos and Scanned Images of Croissant

Scaled to 1:1, these images were taken using a photo stage. They were my guide for when I began drawing.

Drawings and Sketches of Croissant

These drawings were done using different shades of pencil and fine liner to make them look as realistic as possible, showing visible features of depth and texture.

Axonometric Drawings of Croissant

Using a grid system over the outlines of my section cuts, I was able to produce an axonometric 3D looking representation of half my croissant.

Process through the Drawing Stage

Both elevations were placed on a 45 degree angle and placed facing each other on opposite sides of the tracing paper. The elevations were then projected onto the tracing paper and the Mario world began to look like a world. The world was drawn using a T-square and 45 degree square to make sure all lines were axonometric.

Justification of My Design My world is simplistic on the surface however, the shape and landscape is inspired both elevations with the movement of the character the main focus of the world. The transition between different area of the map is derived from different aspects of the gaming world especially Mario. The lava pit and green scenery is taken from levels in the Mario game and transitioned into a 3D world. The colourful stairs that stand out in a dull grey environment are inspired by monument valley and how players have to think axonometrically to achieve movement with the character. I wanted to integrate the two elevations to further explore the notion of the characters movement throughout the world, this is done with the integration of the blocks from elevation 10 and the lone column from elevation 16.

Process through the Unrolling and Fabrication Stages

After much experimentation with unrolling and exporting files to illustrator I found a way to speed up this process whilst maintaining high quality. My modules meant I could only unroll one module at a time therefore after unrolling all the modules, I tabbed them all in the same command and used the ConvertDots tool to keep the numbering system on the flat surface. I exported 2 columns at a time into illustrator and arranged the unrolled surfaces into the best possible combinations on A4 sheets. This meant printing would be made easier and paper was being used effectively. Fabrication was achieved by using a column by Row formula to arrange each panel. I found this the most challenging aspect of the task as it was time consuming and my intricate hand skills aren’t very controlled or precise. The fabrication process involved stick a4 sheets to A1 Ivory card and cutting, then folding and gluing into shapes, once that was completed I connected all the modules using the number system and PVA glue.

Cities Signs 4 Hypatia Analysis of the Text

After having read the text multiple times and discussing it with another classmate. We had varying opinions on what Marco Polo was seeing or imagining throughout this piece. She had a more literal opinion on Marco Polo’s journey into the city with the surreal “convicts with black chains on their feet”. However, I viewed this more as his emotions and feelings throughout his journey in Hypatia where his perception of this city is vastly different to the reality that he confronts upon arriving. This lead to his movement increasing in speed as he grows more and more out of place in this condecending society.

16

Creation of Movement and Perspectives I decided I would use the 3x3 Quad and not make any additions to it as I believed that stripping down Marco Polo’s thoughts into a more simplistic understanding best describes his feelings when walking through Hypatia. Once I had modelled the Old Quad I made a Make2D isometric view of my quad and added all my movements and icons in to show Marco Polo’s thought progression through the city. Reading the story I drew upon some quotes that made me think more philosophically than literally, I saw Marco Polo having his thoughts rather than visually seeing these things. I then created two perspective views that captured his disappointment at realising that Hypatia wasn’t what he thought it to be and the other shows how he felt over dominated by the people and the scenes in Hypatia that ultimately mean his progression out of Hypatia grows in speed.

REFLECTION What did you learn from these projects with reference to lectures? The lectures were incredibly crucial to improving my work across the length of the subject, the set-up of the lectures with each module focusing on the intergration of two main focal words meant that I was able to clearly understand each task and try to integrate the two words to add an undertone of complexity to my work. Something I took a while to understand but inevitably has taught me an important lesson is that manipulating an image to help onlookers to understand what is trying to percieved can be a more effective form of representation than wrtitten respresentation. The final module and the lectures attached to this area of study really taught me how frame is manipulated to create a certain perspective.

What skill did you gain? Skills I gained throughout this subject were definetely involved with using computer programs that I hadn’t used in much detail previously. Skills in Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign will most certainly be important for further studies. I think that experiencing Rhino after having used AutoCAD sparingly and SketchUp for most simple modelling made learning how to use Rhino far easier. Having already learnt basic layering and grouping in SketchUp, applying this to Rhino modelling made sure I focused more on gaining skills in the Rhino to Photoshop stages. I also learnt skills in speaking infront of a crowd that I didn’t know well and being able to stand up for my thoughts and construction processes which I had no previous practice in.

What I need to improve for further studios. My time management skills were consistenly poor and will need to improved in future if I want to improve the quality of my work and the understanding I have within the task. For my next studio I want to spend considerably more time in the thought process of each task rather than trying to brainstorm and construct at similar times.
