Residential teen treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder Adolescent and teen males who experience traumatic events in their lives may eventually experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is caused by a traumatic event such as combat in war, witnessing or being involved in a shooting, a bad traffic accident, a crime such as robbery, a fire, sexual assault, childhood abuse, a flood or the death of a loved one. The event replays in the mind of the victim as if the circumstances are real and repeat. Flashbacks occur and can be triggered by a sound, smell or other stimuli. Disasters within the community, such as a school shooting, fire or flood can also trigger PTSD. People suffering from PTSD have difficulty sleeping and often experience nightmares or bad dreams. They can be short-tempered and often prone to violence.

PTSD symptoms in adolescents and teens Adolescent males between the ages of 10 and 12 may try to relive the traumatic event that caused them to develop PTSD. For instance, they may try to “control their lives by replaying the event. They may also begin to believe that they missed signs that the event was about to happen. As a result, they become hyper-vigilant, believing that if they can just spot the warning signs, they can prevent the event from happening again.
