Troubled teens become upright citizens with innovative programs Many myths exist around juvenile delinquency as a holdover from the developing gangs in the 1980s and 1990s. Movies and media did not help, but reinforced the idea that teenagers created violent predatory groups preying upon the weak, the elderly and those in business. Delinquency is defined as offenses committed by adults that would need criminal prosecution. The act committed by a juvenile classifies as a delinquent offense so that the law has options of rehabilitation, prevention and intervention. Overwhelmingly 80 percent of Americans want more than 31 million juveniles to be away from prison except for the most heinous of crimes. Looking at the statistics, most juveniles in the system are boys between the ages of 10 and 15. Between 1960 and 2011, the trend has been scuffles or assaults followed by stealing of personal property, but not homicide. Studies show the root causes of juvenile delinquency are poverty, lack of jobs, poor education, neglect and child abuse. All of these causes are not necessarily under the teenager’s control, but more on the adults in their lives...........
