My name is Khalid Kader. I’m a secondyear Film and Television student at Wits University. My love for film has quite naturally lead to me loving photography too.

I’ve been doing photography for a few years now but if I had to trace it back, I think my passion probably started when I was very young and my brother and I used to mess around with my dad’s old cameras. Fast forward to around Grade 10 when I and a few friends made our first music video. Looking back on it now, it

wasn’t great at all but at the time it was the coolest thing ever. I think after that project I realized that I truly enjoy making and creating films and videos.

In Matric I began to make more videos with my friends and for school until finally deciding that Film and TV is a career I wish to pursue. The first year we learned camera basics, and I was taking photos incredibly often, but as the year went on I found myself drifting away from photography and more towards filming and creating videos. I was doing videos for friends and local artists.

However, if there’s one thing 2020 has allowed us all to do it’s given us time to reflect. And thinking back on all those videos I realized that they could have been better.

So during Lockdown, I went back to the basics: photography. The theory is that if I can tell a good story in one frame, imagine what I could do in 24 frames in a second. I’ve established newfound respect and love for photography and it started with something I never would have thought I’d do self-portraits.

Going forward I’m excited to push myself and get out of my comfort zone when it comes to photography. I’m hoping that I can get some great shots this summer and just work on honing my craft in photography with the vision of eventually

becoming an even better filmmaker in the future.
