Many elements collectively enhance the interior and the well-being of those within it. Combining these elements it provides the most positive impacts in biophilic design. DECOR INSPIRATION | 15

the BIOPHILIC DESIGN concept by MIKE PETERSON

The workplace thrives with biophilia. The medical community prescribes biophilia. Nations around the world emphasize biophilia. The most exciting development in the design industry today is the recognition that incorporating biophilia improves health and wellness in the home. What is biophilia? It’s our love of nature and it’s a curriculum that teaches this important idea: When interior designers bring nature into the home, it encourages health and wellness. For years we have known, anecdotally, that biophilic design makes us feel better. That idea is no longer anecdotal. It’s now proven. Neuroaesthetics, which is the study of how our brain and subconscious respond to beauty, design and nature, now documents the calming and de-stressing results of exposure tom these elements. Biophilia, or biophilic design, uses the look and feel of nature in the home environment. Woods, cylindrical lines, greenery, natural light and burbling water are just a few of the emotional stimulants designers can use. Additional elements of biophilia include Prospect and Refuge, which is the feeling of security and safety in your home as we gaze out the window to a natural world. Fractal beauty is perhaps the highest aesthetic value we can incorporate into our home. Fractals are repeating patterns of differing scales: think of ferns, tree canopies, various geometric images…all of which are found in nature.

A Prescription for Nature The medical industry in many Far East countries are well ahead of the states in incorporating healthy design into the home environment. In the 1980s, Japan, for instance, began to implement the idea of shinrin yoku. Shinrin yoku is the Japanese word for “forest bathing,” or the medicine of simply being in the forest.

The Harlan & Holden Dining is a cafe located in Philippines .The idea was to take as inspiration a glasshouse to emphasize the relationship with the outer space and maintain contact with tropic nature that was already present in the area, breaking the boundaries between indoor and outdoor. Note that I say “medicine.” In the Far East, doctors now prescribe forest bathing as a medicinal alternative to a bottle of pills. It has become a cornerstone of preventive healthcare and healing in Japanese medicine. (In a way, shinrin yoku is a sibling to biophilia. Biophilic design means bringing nature into the home, and shinrin yoku means going out into nature.)

The Jewel is a nature-themed entertainment and retail complex which helps visitors escape into nature with the elements of water and nature to help improve their experience with their stunning biophilic architectural design!

Working for Better Interiors Why is commercial design so far ahead of residential design when it comes to healthy environments? Major companies want productivity and increased creativity and learned years ago that by providing a healthbased environment they will increase both. A recent study of 7,600 workers in 16 countries found that those who worked in spaces with green or other natural features reported a 15 percent higher level of wellbeing, 6 percent more productivity and 15 percent more creativity. Increasing productivity by 6 percent increases a company’s annual profit by $3,395 per employee every year. This fact alone is why companies like Apple, Amazon, Etsy and so many more are incorporating healthy design principles into the work environment. Each one of these companies has created 100% biophilic headquarters in just the last several years. Additionally, Microsoft has begun building their conference rooms…in treetops!

More than 40,000 plants, most from cloud forest ecosystems, live within Amazon's Spheres in Seattle. Jordan Stead

The explosion of biophilic design around the world is creating environments that are scientifically determined to improve health. Lower blood pressure and heart rate, plus the positive mood adjustments, all prove the healing power of nature-based design…biophilia! DECOR INSPIRATION | 23

SUN & waves

Inspired by an endless body of water, Sarah used wallcovering to simulate waves. The chandelier in the dinette also mimics the sun and rests above a gold latticework fruit bowl that resembles sea coral.

By Sarah, “ You have a story to tell when it comes to design. It’s unique to you. It reflects who you are. It’s born from your life’s experiences. Your home is important to your inner peace. The emotional reward of that inner peace makes your life more complet. My job, is to help you tell it!” Sarah Z.
