Digital Disruption
“The power of digital distribution over physical retail outlets is you have a chance to create a global audience.” - Chad Hurley
Greta’s opinion We are living in a digital age where publishing books online have become as easy as pie. There is a lot of ongoing debate around this topic – more so for writers and novelists though than companies like Timeless Technologies. Some might think of digital publishing as digital disruption, but I see it as a means to reach more people without having to deal with the tremendous spike in prices within the print industry. Another plus point includes not having to deal with distribution headaches. Everything is made a lot easier; with one press of a button the magazine reaches the whole Timeless Technologies connection base. How awesome! Hope you enjoy Volume 3!

Resilience Elize on positive change
RECOGNIZE YOUR FEAR FACE IT There is one must have skill you should add to your professional development plan in order to thrive in today’s workplace. Administrative professionals of all walks of life, levels of experience and titles need this valuable asset every day – the ability to be resilient (strong, tough, and resistant). Resilience means that when we fail, we have the strength to learn the lessons needed in order for us to move on to bigger and better things. You have to have a good attitude about growth following your failure. In order to bounce back from difficulty and disappointment and to be able to learn from it make a conscience decision.
6
If you can develop resilience you will be able to: • Bounce back faster after a setback • Take daily workplace changes in your advance • Use resources effectively especially when faced with a problem • Move in tandem with your executive • Learn the lessons you need to learn • Regulate as you adapt to change • Produce result driven outcomes to problems • Find ways to effectively share your ideas with others
VOL 3 | AUGUST 2018
It is extremely important to recognize your fear and face it. Fear can prevent you from progressing in your career and from growing as an individual - it can become a monster that intensifies. When dealing with fear; think what is the worst possible outcome? Then decide how you will handle the situation, should it happen. How you cope with change will depend on your belief system. If you believe that change is for the worse and you will not make it through, meaning nothing good will come of it, then you will be right. But if you believe there is an opportunity in change and you can successfully get through it, you will!!! Improving resiliency will also help you in your personal life. I have learned that no one is immune to challenges and setbacks. I wish you much success and happiness.

Keep it simple, stupid!
“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” - Leonardo da Vinci
Tinus uncomplicates things The above words mean quite a lot when interpreted in full, especially when you talk about Estate security systems and sub-systems. The main reason for the above comment, is derived from all the “problems/issues” the Estates perceived to have, with regards to their Electronic Security Systems. I have found that some integrators make the engineering so complex that nobody can understand or grasp the physical installation thereof. The poor, and I mean the poor client, do not have a “hope in hell” in getting another integrator to site, when the main contractor default and is asked to leave, without spending a huge amount of money in getting the issues resolved. The system was sold as an intelligent system: the access control interfaced with the gate CCTV interfaced with the perimeter measures interfaced with the VMS, is the best in the world (“the greatest thing since sliced bread”). What the client does not know - there are interface “black boxes” and proprietary software within the systems and between each interface which is the brainchild of the integrator only. When the, hypothetical “jam hits the fan”, and the customer cancelled the order or maintenance contract, normally after a huge fight, one of many things usually happen, just to mention a few:
• The client has difficulty in getting
maintenance.
• If he does get someone, there is a
huge cost in getting the system up
and running as specified.
• Or the client has to replace some
another contractor who is willing
to accept responsibility for the future
of the hardware and/or software in
achieving such.

all “hell breaks loose”. The Sales person and company go on with “business as usual”, looking for another “sucker” and the employee sits without a job and the homeowners fight the so called “positional” battles within. But imagine, the access control is used as is, with minor changes required, but supported locally by the distributor or local manufacturer; the CCTV or the VMS. It speaks for itself that you can get the support from the supplier directly and the customer is not tied down by an integrator at all. The question will be which customer will be most happy? Believe me, and as I have seen during the last 30 years, it is the end-user who is in charge of his own destiny. Therefore my learned colleagues, I do know that you disagree (or might even agree for that matter – you have seen the truth), but believe you me, with all my experience and with all the research I have done on the Estates where I operate, the happiest customer is the one who is in charge of his own destiny by doing all the maintenance work himself and who understands his basic sub-systems, and the customer who kept it simple, stupid! I salute you!
As we all know, there are major repercussions when a project goes “belly up”! Very few people think about the Estate or Security Manager or even the Trustee, who supported the clever sales people from the specific company. The homeowners start asking questions and need an explanation - at the end

If I was the duchess of Sussex‌ Jeanette dreams big...
Since I married the love of my life, Harry, the Queen bestowed the title of Duchess of Sussex onto me and with that comes many advantages and obligations. As all the hype of our nuptials died down, we were so fortunate to receive a wonderful home from the Queen for our happy ever after. On the rolling hills of Sandringham, we received a beautiful cottage named the York cottage. The estate has been under the British royal family’s possession since 1862, which was first occupied by the Prince of Wales (later known as King Edward VII). The property is 8,000 hectares large (around 19,800 acres), including a 240-hectare public park and

24-hectare garden, which is connected to the main house. After walking the grounds and appreciating all that was gifted to us, we realized that there is no security or perimeter watch. As we sat and wondered what we should do, I remembered an old high school friend of mine was working for a company, Timeless Technologies, which can assist us with the planning of a security system like this. We got in touch with my old high school friend and starting planning our safety.
As Timeless Technologies is a distributor of the FLIR thermal cameras, they suggested we get an integrator to assist with the installation of a security and perimeter system. Timeless Technologies was so kind as to introduce us to a few integrators so that we could choose the one we were most comfortable with. We took them on a walking route through the estate grounds so that they could assess what they would require to keep us safe at all times. For the very first time, I realized how much planning goes in such a project, for instance we took a google map aerial view of the estate and plotted the perimeter cameras to make sure there are no undetected areas. We decided that these 7 points would be the pefect spots to install the cameras.
15
TIMETECH MAGAZINE
The technician explained to us that we did not have to use the same cameras at all 7 points but it could be a combination of cameras specifically choosen for our needs. We decided on the following cameras: 1. FC 324 with a range of 125m 2. FC 313 with a range of 180m 3. FC 324 with a range of 125m 4. FC 313 with a range of 180m 5. FC 313 with a range of 180m 6. FC 324 with a range of 125m 7. We were explained that the FLIR FC range has the following specifications that will satisfy our requirements to be as safe as we could be:

As you can see on the table, we are well covered. The FC 324 is a 19mm camera with 320x240 sensor and the FC 313 is a 35mm with a 320x240 sensor. What a wonderful way of keeping us safe, I will have to chat to William and Catherine so that they can also reap the benefits of such a great system. The Queen will be very happy to know that they don’t have to worry about our safety. Well now, my tiaras are not going to sort themselves out, have to go‌. Stay safe! Words, Training & Knowledge Second Edition In the first edition of this article (Timetech Magazine Volume 02) I explained that I found a sequence of how to acquire knowledge. This cycle starts with one single word that you do not understand and make it part of your general knowledge. In this second version, I will discuss how I use this technique to train people and how I am trying to change the old fashioned way of currently training this industry. First I will attempt to explain how people are trained in the industry. You can attend either a two to three day training course like an “IP Certificate” or “Electrical Fencing” and a lot of other so called alternatives that will leave you with the know how to be able to do work in the field. In most of these courses the “lector” will go through a PowerPoint and at the end of each course you will write an open book test. Now I have a few issues with the above method: 1. At the end of this course you will not be able to implement the information you have acquired. 2. The trainees sometimes are more confused and feel demotivated. 3. Time and money wasted. The first thing that I focus on in my process is the explanation of terminologies regularly used in the field. Once I start with training I normally write these terms down and go through them one at a time.
20
Part 2 Wilke pursues knowledge
For example: When hosting training for networking in the security industry the terminology that I will use are as follows:
• • • • • • • •
IP / Internet Protocol IP Range IP address Command Promp (cmd) Ping IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) Web interface Ext.
You see the above terminologies are very basic in the networking industry, but for new comers these words are irrelevant. If a trainee understands the terminology he/she will be able to have a basic conversation in the industry. My goal is to give the trainee the ability to communicate on the topic and understand what is being discussed around him/her. The second phase is to explain in depth how networking is applicable and the basic steps a technician will follow. I will also demonstrate by example and make sure each trainee understands the process. The third phase will be practical application. In this segment each trainee will set up their own network. Now they will be able to ask questions with the right terminology because they have a basic understanding of the words that we use in the field every day. I will ask questions like: “Open cmd and ping the following IP address “10.1.1.2”. If the ping was
VOL 3 | AUGUST 2018
successful, go into the web interface and change the IP address of the device to 192.168.250.115. ext. Through this process the trainees learn not only the language of the field, but they learn how to set up a network. The last and most important part of my training is accessibility. I give my contact details to all the trainees to phone me when they have come across something they do not understand. I build a relationship with all the people I have trained and I hope that more trainers will do the same in the future. From my side: “Any fool can know. The point is to understand. - Albert Einstein

The Benefits of Using Thermal Hendri explores the benefits
Thermal imaging cameras provide the most effective 24/7 monitoring solution available.
See through dust, light fog, smoke or some foliage the integration of thermal imaging cameras can provide end users with a multitude of benefits from better analytics with fewer false alarms, increased coverage and higher return on investment.
When you are dealing with Outdoor Projects for Perimeter Protection, you will have areas with low light or no light. Thermal cameras do not rely on reflected light; but instead create images from heat by displaying very small differences in thermal energy as various shades of grey in black and white video.
22
VOL 3 | AUGUST 2018
Analytics for video surveillance can simply be described as processing on a digital image that utilizes pre-determined algorithms in an attempt to automatically identify objects or activities of interest. Unfortunately, problems concerning the reliability of analytics can occur when using visible cameras as soon as there is fluctuation in lighting, low-light conditions, or common natural occurrences such as wind, precipitation or the presence of insects, especially at night. Thermal imaging cameras’ high contrast video output minimizes these normally troublesome issues, and with the same analytics, provides higher reliability, significantly reducing false alarms.
The effective imaging range of thermal minimizes the number of cameras and mounting poles required and saves you money. Thermal Cameras with video Analytics is a very affective intrusion system.

The Golden Oldies Herman gets nostalgic Everywhere we go we see technology plays a big part in our daily lives. Just think about the metamorphosis the telephone has gone through over the past 30 years. Back in the day, you were “the man” if you had a car phone (radio linked land line that Magnum PI used) and everyone wanted to be you. If you still had one of those 20 years ago, you definitely were not “the man” anymore… and you probably didn’t have any friends. Today almost every vehicle on the road talks back to you. Just in case any of you suddenly got a bright idea, it is my duty to inform you that becoming famous for having a talking car is long gone… In fact, apart from flashing lights on the bonnet, driving itself and being bulletproof, the Knight-Industries-Two-Thousand does not even have half the paraphernalia we use during everyday life... Oh wait; we already have cars that like that. Sorry KITT, you’re not really that special anymore. If only your inventors thought of making you fly as well back then - our vehicles might have been different today. And faxing… man, I used to love faxing. There are still some e-mail signatures that have a fax number listed. But who still faxes today? I bet it doesn’t even go to a proper fax machine but rather a fax to e-mail. The fax has been replaced by an e-mail. Remember how you had to phone the recipient on the landline afterwards to find out if they got the fax and if it was complete and clear enough to read? No need for that anymore. Not only did I know that you got it complete and in excellent quality, I also knew if you
24
read it or not. Better watch out e-mail… you’re revamping or replacement is next! Nowadays WhatsApp is much easier. Many moons ago, a CCTV sticker in a window and some dummy cameras installed here and there, were more than enough. The thought that someone could be watching your every movement like a hawk was enough to turn any would be criminal into an honest law abiding citizen. As time went by, criminal activity increased in both frequency as well as severity. The necessity for better technology became clear. We now have an arsenal

of electrified fences, IR beams, seismic sensors, thermal cameras, video analytics and many more other solutions at our disposal. All of these being military grade technology, now available to the private sector, designed to keep James Bond at bay. One of the product members of the Timetech family is the Timeless Technologies 360° Radar unit with an area coverage of 360° and a detection range of 200m for human sized objects. The 360° Radar is ONVIF compatible for easy integration and PTZ camera control for automatic target track and trace; this makes it a very
effective intruder detection system. The complete solid design reduces manufacturing cost; ensuring 0% down time caused by mechanical failures as well as eliminating the need for costly scheduled maintenance. As an added bonus, due to reduced manufacturing price, the 360° Radar is the most cost effective radar option available to the security industry. Two cousins, the Timetech Scan Beam and the Timetech Scan Sector, compliments the 360° with corridor detection ranging from 200m and 500m respectively, ideal for perimeter use.

CathexisVision and SightLogix Integration: Detect, Assess and Respond with GPS enabled technology
Cathexis Technologies is pleased to announce its latest integration – Cathexis Video Analytics with SightLogix Smart Thermal Cameras. The SightLogix range of thermal cameras offer excellent on-edge analytics with the most significant feature of this specific integration being the use of GPS technology, GPS-based video analytics can pinpoint intruders on a live site map while auto-zooming PTZ cameras for alarm assessment. The SightLogix Smart Thermal Cameras with Video Analytics provide highly accurate outdoor intruder detection at a reduced cost. This simple, yet effective solution, provides a seamless solution to outdoor and perimeter security challenges, including: intrusion, theft and vandalism. SightLogix is integrated with CathexisVision to display live viewing GPS co-ordinates on-screen in accordance with the intruder or object movements. The information generated by the camera operates with the Cathexis analytics enabling the GPS and other information to provide the most effective and accurate results.
Benefits of this integration: • The ability to detect, assess and respond immediately to incidents or potential intrusions. The GPS-based video analytics pinpoint intruders on a live GPS calibrated SightLogix map, while auto-zooming PTZ cameras for alarm assessment. • 24/7 intruder detection, where thermal cameras combined with analytics provide accurate detection, anytime of the day or night and in all climatic conditions. •
This cost-effective solution can detect intruders over vast areas, reducing the need for additional cameras and infrastructure.
• Suitable for some of the toughest climatic conditions, this system operates reliably in extreme variances in temperature.

TIMETECH MAGAZINE
When to finance equipment There is a common perception that one should only finance something if you don’t have the capital available to pay cash. Therefore it is assumed that only businesses that cannot afford a cash purchase should use finance. The logic is that cash is a cheaper method of purchasing because you don’t incur interest charges, as you would with finance. The reality is, if you are buying an asset that loses significant value over a relatively short period of time (about 5 years or less), paying cash is the most expensive option.
This is why: For most businesses, cash is a scarce resource. So, what we use our cash for is crucial. In other words, using your cash in areas that will allow your cash balance to appreciate, rather than depreciate, becomes critical. Cash purchases should only be considered for appreciating assets such as property; stock (can be turned many times over a few years) etc. Investing a lump sum into an asset that will lose value over a short space of time makes little sense. Using cash to purchase a rapidly depreciating asset is similar to buying a stock market share that is guaranteed to lose value.
50
In other words, the opportunity cost of cash - “what you could have done with it”- is what makes it an expensive option. For this reason many large corporates, although cash flush, will buy appreciating equipment and finance depreciating equipment. In addition, financing assets that are used to generate income allows the entity to be cash positive with immediate effect. Usually the revenue generated from the equipment far exceeds the monthly lease expense. Hence the business in not in a
VOL 3 | AUGUST 2018
cash negative position until a future breakeven point is reached. The most popular finance structure, in this regard, is an operating lease or rental. This allows monthly payments to be treated as a monthly expense - consequently no debt is reflected on the balance sheet. In addition, operating leases typically do not require a deposit, are fully tax deductible and facilities usually don’t affect any existing banking lines. Cash balances and existing banking facilities (access to cash) are of the highest value. Preserve them wherever possible.
51
TIMETECH MAGAZINE
Consider this: 1. Customer A purchases fridges and a telephone system for his restaurant, costing R500k. He uses his available cash in the bank for this purpose.
Customer A’s 500k is tied up in his equipment and will depreciate to, say, 50k after 5 years.
2. Customer B purchases the same equipment for his restaurant but uses the financing option. He pays 12k per month but retains his 500k cash balance in the bank.
Customer B uses his 500k to buy and sell stock or alternatively purchases an appreciating asset. At a return of 15% p.a, his 500k doubles after 5 years. He also has continued access to the funds in the event of an emergency.
In short, • The price of cash is linked to its opportunity cost - what you could have done with it. • Use your cash to purchase appreciating assets. • Use other people’s cash to purchase depreciating assets.

VOL 3 | AUGUST 2018 In January Reditron announced an exclusive distribution partnership with Paxton. The global brand of electronic access control and door entry solutions company released in May the new Entry Premium Monitor with new concierge function. Reditron customers who were still enthusiastic about the Net2 Entry Touch Panel enjoyed the live demonstrations of the Net2 Entry Premium Monitor. IDEMIA launched their new MorphoWave Compact in April this year, so as to be expected they showcased the frictionless biometric access control product. The new MorphoWave Compact is 86% smaller than the MorphoWave Tower, while it retains the same scanning volume. It requires only four fingers in 3D for maximum accuracy, with one pass of the hand over the sensor. Attendees had an opportunity to test it and ask questions. Presenting some key products for network solutions was Ian Hamlett, Regal Group network product manager. Ian presented network solutions for different industry sites using wireless products from Wisnetworks and static switches from Utepo. Applications of these products on sites from farming to industrial complexes were discussed in detail. Reditron has plans to roll out this roadshow in Cape Town and Durban in August and September.
