It’s market day! There is no better start to a Saturday than a meander among the quality stalls in the heart of Howick’s Picton Street. Tempting food aromas waft through the air and there’s always a free tasting of one thing or another. Friendly and affable stallholders have a gentle banter that suits the pace of a leisurely Saturday morning. There’s a wide variety of cuisines – while the woodcrafts, jewellery, garden adornments and plants, lavender soaps and creams, woollens and other Kiwicrafted products are all of the highest quality. The fresh produce is consistently the best you’ll find at an Auckland market. The fruit and vegetables have that picked-this-morning freshness and many are just that.

Whether travelling by private car, bus, taxi or even bicycle, Howick Ward is easily accessed and not difficult to explore. The highways of Pakuranga Rd, Chapel Rd and Ti Rakau Dr essentially form a loop which, if followed, takes visitors past all major shopping centres and many of the area’s attractions. Transport links to or from Auckland’s CBD and across the city are good with various bus companies providing services. There is no rail access but visitors can travel by ferry from Auckland’s CBD to Half Moon Bay where there is a bus service available to central parts of the ward.
