It’s all about trust By Nick Krause
A
s customers, we can be horrible. We are demanding. We want service immediately, our standards are extremely high (we’re paying right?), We are busy and we know best. The companies and individuals with whom we do business – the discerning ones at any rate – know this, or ought to know this. Without this fundamental acceptance that our customers have certain expectations is folly. And it doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about shoes, a replacement window, servicing for the car or a sandwich at your favourite cafe, we want the best experience. If the price is competitive, that’s a bonus.
There’s ground zero. Trust. If my online community sings the praises of a vendor, we’re more than happy to check them out. We buy. Trade has thrived like this for a millennia. Heaven forbid though if a customer experience is a shocker. The internet wields such power. We all know what a scathing review can do. It can be like biffing an ember onto bone-dry kindling. We’ve witnessed it. One voice can multiply at a terrifying rate and, like an out-of-control bush fire, can decimate a business. The retailer or service provider stands to lose so much, most particularly trust. Without trust the game is lost, as customers will take flight without the slightest hesitation. They will also take with them their friends, family and cash.
The equation is actually quite simple. We seek goods or services, we Google (or use social media) said services, and if we’re lucky, someone will recommend a cobbler or stylist or restaurant or dressmaker.
But smart operators needn’t despair. As quickly as the customer can turn on them, the customer can also be placated. Trust can be re-established as you will read in some our feature articles in this publication.
And it’s not all bad. Anecdotally, we know from social media sites which business or specialists people gravitate towards. They talk up the best fish and chip shop or handyman or dog groomer. We trust these recommendations.
Even the most demanding of customers will accept that mistakes are made. The key as a business is to accept the wrong and make it right. Immediately. This takes us onto another tack.

We know from social media sites which business or specialists people gravitate towards. They talk up the best fish and chip shop or handyman or dog groomer. We trust these recommendations.
Clever retail or service operators cannot be one dimensional. Businesses need to really understand what drives their customers. What makes them buy? In most cases, it’s not only about price or performance, says Business Link UK.
something, it’s important to deliver on that promise. Your brand is very much dependent on following through, whether it’s shown through great products, great service, great customer communications, or otherwise.
“Ask existing customers what they like about doing business with you. And asking potential customers what they look for in their buying decisions can also give you useful information to help develop your business - and your brand.”
“You must make sure that brand promise is consistently delivered so it’s believed; only then will it be shared on your behalf.”
As you’ll read in the following pages, your brand represents the whole customer experience. “You should regularly review your customers’ experiences of your business,” Business Link says.
To stand out in the vast sea of competition, your businesses, brands need to truly impress.
I really like part of a blog by chief marketing officer Joanna Lord who exhorts: “Don’t just talk; do!”
“We can’t just be flashy or have a memorable logo; we need to stand for something that drives people to support us. To put it simply: the more successful your brand, the easier it will be to build loyalty around that brand. A successful brand takes a great deal of intention when building.”

Building strong relationships with the community
I
t’s easy to see that owneroperators of FreshChoice Half Moon Bay supermarket Chris Harris and Juliet Monaghan are a handson team. Before you even meet them, you will spot them spending time in the aisle talking to the staff, connecting with the customers and even stepping in to handle the till at the check-out, the minute customers queue up. It doesn’t take long to know that their passion, eye for detail and customer service has filtered down to the staff and everyone associated with FreshChoice Half Moon Bay. But they are modest and give all the credit to the hard working staff saying they have a strong connectivity with the local community saying they know many people from the neighbourhood. “We cater to a very large diversity of needs and all the work we do here is centred to the customer’s needs. We employ locals, have local suppliers and support local needs,” says Chris who after spending 30 years in supermarkets and running his own retail consultancy took on the opportunity to own and operate the full service supermarket with competitive pricing. “By focussing on local aspirations we build loyalty and a strong sense of ownership,” he says. Absolute foodies, owner-operators Chris and Juliet along with the team at FreshChoice are very responsive to customer requests and are keen to take customer service to another level.
Constantly looking for artisan and gourmet food at supermarket prices, they actively researched the recent Auckland Food Show and came back with an exciting selection of new and healthy products such as the Harney and Sons Premium Teas which offer some of the world’s finest tea — at affordable prices. The list of new and exciting suppliers making their way into FreshChoice include Banjo Kombucha, a range of delicious craft brewed kombucha using real fruit, healthy cultures and the finest organic herbal ingredients. Embracing the latest contemporary food trends, the list also includes House of Dumplings, Nut loaf, Farm Fresh Meats, Waiheke Sausages, Alter Ego Chocolates, Kako boxed chocolates, Organic from Switzerland and many more. In addition we have candy-free checkouts, offer paper checkout bags or bio-degradable options.
“Our customers who live in the area are very knowledgeable and health conscious and after talking to them we make some authentic choices which are current, like bringing in Yum Muesli or special Italian handmade cheese – ViaVio - from Nelson so that customers don’t have to travel to get it.
“We have an extensive range and are very responsive to customer requests. Also, we have a distinct advantage of being part of Progressive and can leverage their volume and be very competitive in the market place,” he rightly points out. The supermarket that boasts of a beautiful backdrop of the Half Moon Bay Marina also offers a Gourmet aisle ‘For the Love of Food’ that stocks a very wide range of gluten free, artisan and gourmet food which is a standout and easy to pick. Fresh Choice is in the process of adding another 19 ranges of gourmet type lines. Making the FreshChoice experience even more special is Cafe Delishimo that creates wholesome homebaked daily hot meals, in addition to quiches, fritattas and pies and sweet and savoury food–on-the-run. There is an instant sense of goodness with very little processed ingredients being used in the preparation. They are experts at All Press coffees.
marketing which is about good farm practises, selling organic meat and working with people who look after their animals.” A great believer in building relationships and giving back to the community, every month FreshChoice contributes $500 to the local community groups, school and charity that needs financial support. They also actively support the Pakuranga College work experience programme. For eight months of the year, the fiveyear-old supermarket gives away $500 and for the other four months it is $1000. Applicants can apply by completing an application form available at the checkout or printing the FreshChoice Community Fund Application form. Once completed drop it in the box next to the notice board.
A qualified chef oversees the food that is known for home goodness as it offers a lot of convenience giving customers the reassurance that the most delicious and tender roasts or sandwiches and wraps with scrumptious fillings can be eaten right away. “The cafe is a part of our business and typically people who come to the supermarket like to pick up some fresh food on their way back home,” says Chris.

Trust these guys? Sure can W
e’ve all been there – looking to source a tradesman/woman or handyperson or an accountant or IT person for work around the house or bach or work.. It might be a one-off job like have a new deck or fence built, or getting a kitchen or bathroom sorted. Or it might be a job which requires ongoing commitment - like lawns and hedges and gardening, bach cleaning or getting those accounts sorted. And then, who to trust? If you’re unsure though of where to start, there’s a very trustworthy lot out there who run their small to medium operations under the banner of franchises. Many already advertise in the Times. These operators – some just oneman or woman businesses, others with a few staff – have invested in a franchise, and with it a huge amount of trust through a brand. Can you depend on them? Absolutely, with those registered with the Franchise Association of New Zealand (FANZ). FANZ chairman Bradley Jacobs said all prospective members of the Franchise Association must submit to an independent scrutiny of the relevant material to ensure that their
processes provide all the necessary information to potential franchisees or clients.“One of our strong marketing messages is look for this sign before you sign,” he said. “We believe buying a franchise system from one of our members is better than from a group who is not a member.” Due diligence will look at everything from whether the franchisor is financially viable, seek disclosure documents and ensure all company directors are searched,” he said.

“We have independent scrutiny of all that for us. Everyone is compliancechecked every second year and we go through the whole process all over again. “The last thing is if a franchisee joins one of our member’s franchise systems, we have a dispute resolution system available for them in the event something doesn’t go as planned.” “The success of franchises in New Zealand is significantly higher than that of small independent businesses,” Mr Jacobs said. “By having a strict Code of Practice, we ensure that people who deal with our members can do so in the confidence that the franchisor or advisor will adhere to the principles of best practice.”

Ormiston Weight Loss Service Welcome to the Ormiston Weight Loss Service. Our service is intended to offer our community a surgical choice and clinical support, to assist in taking ownership of your health and moving forward to a greater place of wellness. Bariatric Surgery assists in weight loss and may be recommended as a last resort when diet, exercise and medication have not been successful and if obesity related conditions such as heart disease, asthma, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea and type II diabetes have
worsened, among other problems. The aim of the surgery is to reduce the food-holding capacity of the stomach so the patient has a feeling of fullness after eating very little. Without hunger pangs, the person tends to lose interest in overeating and is more likely to stick to a lowkilojoule diet. When you choose Ormiston Hospital Weight Loss Service for your surgery, you choose the most experienced surgeons, treating you in the well-established Ormiston Hospital. We are dedicated to offering you a complete and comprehensive service with a fixed fee that will provide you with the best level of care through your journey to improved health.

Fifty-five acres was set aside, and on January 17, 1889 the first burial took place. In 1937 the Auckland Anglican Diocesan Synod established an independent Trust Board, the Purewa Cemetery Trust Board, to which the cemetery was transferred. The Trust Board is appointed by the Diocese. Purewa is the only privately run cemetery in the eastern suburbs. Many notable New Zealanders and Auckland families are buried there. Continental Cars - a lesson in history and service By Dave McLeod The world was a very different place 50 years ago. Wilson and Johnson watched over the UK and the US, while we watched Evel Knievel jump 16 cars in a row (and then fail to jump the fountains at Caesar’s. Technology was on the move too; Concorde was unveiled and the Boeing 737 took to the skies. 1967 – The Continental Cars’ journey started It all started with one man and his tool box when a young Tim Bailey arrived at small workshop premises, behind a disused Mobil Petrol Station at 40 Great South Road, Newmarket. As one of the three first A-grade technicians in New Zealand, and with Service Manager experience at Town and Country Cars, he started the company with nothing more than £600, a toolbox, an old Morris Minor van and a dream. From the outset, the difference was Service. ‘People person’ Tim Bailey was ultimately a car guy; his personal garage boasted some stunning Italian beauties. His racing career had him on the Rally circuit and the racetrack, lined up against the who’s who of New Zealand racing legends (Hulme, McLaren and Amon), driving everything from Fiat and Ferrari to an Alfa and the Porsche 911T. Tim’s passion was servicing European (Continental) cars, and so it seemed inevitable that Continental Cars was born. Continental Cars was initially a sales and service centre for Fiat (Bambinos). 1973 – Ferrari An integral part of Continental Cars In the news – The World Trade Centre (NYC) becomes the tallest building in the world, With Tim’s penchant for luxurious and sporty Italian cars, there
www.times.co.nz
was little doubt the Prancing Horse brand would at some point come into the Continental Cars stable and it was actually a case of sooner rather than later. The first car they sold was a Ferrari Dino 246 GT. Since then, Continental Cars (the only Ferrari dealer in NZ) has introduced so many customers to the brand that New Zealand has become one of the highest achievers in Ferrari sales (and collectors) per capita in the world, especially in the top-end models. 1974 – Porsche In the news – Isabela Peron (Evita) becomes president of Argentina, and the New Zealand Cricket team beats Australia for the first time. Continuing with the racing theme, motorsport marque Porsche was the next European vehicle brand to be added to the group. Porsche had already established itself as a powerful and desirable brand and the iconic (and timeless) look of the 911 slotted in perfectly. 1975 – Volkswagen In the news – Margaret Thatcher becomes leader of the British Conservative party, VHS hit the TV and NZ’s second TV channel starts broadcasting. With one legendary German brand safely ensconced into the Continental Cars’ family, another was quick to follow – Volkswagen. The likes of the Beetle, the Golf, the Combi and the Polo all became accessible to Kiwis. 1999 – Volkswagen Piazza Showroom In the news – with the turn of the century looming, the Y2K bug was the talk of the year. Continental Cars was the first dealership in the southern hemisphere to provide a factory-designed and sanctioned Volkswagen “Piazza” showroom.
1999 Sime Darby Motor Group Sime Darby Motor Group’s involvement began with the acquisition of the company. Over the following years, Sime Darby Motor Group invested heavily in new facilities that allowed the marques that Continental Cars represented to expand into purpose-built dealerships in Newmarket. Sime Darby began in 1910 when Scotsman William Middleton Sime and Englishman Henry Darby teamed up to form a company to manage a rubber estate in Malacca. Sime Darby has grown into one of southeast Asia’s leading conglomerates. The Sime Darby Group now employs more than 120,000 people in approximately 25 countries. The Sime Darby Group parent company and head office is located in Kuala Lumpur. 2001 – Continental Cars Audi officially opened by the PM In the news – September 11: the Twin Towers attack. Audi has become a significant brand for Continental Cars and is housed in the world-class Audi hangar, which was officially opened by the Prime Minister in October 2001. The dealership is one of the largest such facilities in Australasia, and is situated on the original site the company first occupied back in 1967. 2002 – Continental Cars Porsche Centre In the news – US and Russia agree a nuclear arms deal. The construction of the Porsche Centre at 40 Great South Road in early 2002 took the brand representation to a new level: a dedicated facility, sales and service team, and an environment where passionate Porsche lovers could congregate.
2003 – Volkswagen Showroom Extension In the news – US Space shuttle crash, NZ population hits 4 million. Tim Bailey opened the doors to Continental Cars in Newmarket. Continental Cars adds the neighbouring site to the Volkswagen dealership, to enlarge the area for used and commercial vehicles, as well as extending and enhancing the main showroom. 2016 – Ferrari Flagship store opens in Newmarket In the news – Brexit and Trump. Continental Cars Ferrari opens its impressive new showroom in an event that befits the world’s most desirable car brand. Strategically positioned at the start of Newmarket’s road of prestigious vehicle dealerships, the Ferrari showroom stands out as a new mecca for Ferrari owners and enthusiasts alike. 2017 – Jerry Clayton BMW rebrands to Continental Cars BMW In the news – Trump takes office and the doomsday clock moves forward 30 seconds. Jerry Clayton BMW has been an authorised BMW dealer since 1989. Having sold and/or serviced more than 100,000 BMW vehicles over the years, the dealership’s customer care is held in high regard, making Jerry Clayton BMW a natural addition to the Continental Cars brand. The world has changed a lot in the past 50 years, yet Continental Cars remains a leader in the automotive industry. It continues to set new benchmarks consistently and exceeding expectations in all facets of the motor industry. Looking forward to the next 50 years. www.continentalcars.co.nz

Meet The Big Fish T
he Big Fish have been in business for over 20 years. It was started by owner, Phil Appleyard, (a Buckland’s Beach resident) and the large well-stocked shop has built up a solid reputation for its comprehensive range of top stock – and its affordable prices. Phil has been in the industry for around 40 years, starting off in commercial and now recreational fishing. His dedication to recreational fishing has now evolved into him being the President of the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council. The Big Fish is well-known for having key local fishing knowledge, with all staff being keen anglers. “We offer a wide range of baits, professional reel and rod repairs as well as a huge range of tackle for all types of fishing,” explains Alexandra Perry, who has worked at the shop for the past four years and goes fishing whenever she can. “We’re all into fishing at The Big Fish – each of us has a favourite method, including soft baiting, slow jigging or bait fishing, so that helps us give customers great tips.” Alex is the buyer for the shop and is also an expert rod-builder. She can build a rod from scratch and also does repair work for customers.
Paul Emerson is in charge of the reel repairs, which is done in store. Paul has joined the Big Fish team this year, but has been in the industry for just over 15 years. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge on fishing gear, reel and rod repairs, as well as years of experience fishing for snapper, kingfish, marlin and much more. Yet another new addition to the team is Natalie Taumaarua who has already proven to be a talented rod repairer with a fantastic creative flare. She is also mad keen on fishing and more often than not, out fishes all those around her! The Big Fish has a fishing club, which was launched about the time it started and now has about 250 members. The club, which meets monthly and also organises competitions and other events, is affiliated to the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council. New members are always welcomed along to share fishing information, know-how and possible stories about the “one that got away.” Some impressive fish specimens, who obviously didn’t get away, have been moulded into very impressive fibreglass moulds to decorate the shop. There’s also a photo-board with an impressive line-up of photographs of fishing success stories.
Alex, Phil and Paul.
The fishing side of the shop covers a huge range of equipment. This year sees them stocking a new and exciting range of New Zealand made Kilwell rods, which are ( of course) of the highest quality. The Big Fish is also expanding its game fishing range, in rods, reels and game lures. They stock a selection of smokers, ICEY TEK chilly bins, charts, buoyancy aids (lifejackets) clothing and much more. Within the same building is the dive section, which is also now owned by Phil Appleyard. Phil and Paul are fully licenced dive bottle fillers, both have a boat load of knowledge for where to get a feed of scallops and crayfish. “We supply everything you could possibly need for snorkelling, diving or spear-fishing. It’s a very nice and friendly local business with a real variety of stock and good prices.
Anything we don’t have, we can usually have it in store within a day if needed,” Phil says. The Big Fish team report that recent catches of southern Bluefin tuna by local game fishermen are the best they have encountered in eight years. Snapper fishing is also very good at the moment with the water temp still above average for this time of year. They are now in feeding mode, so it’s a great time of the year to go out and catch some fresh fish for the family. Fishing is becoming very familyoriented with many of the regular customers at The Big Fish now introducing their children to the pleasure of hours of fishing off their boats or wharves. Is green the new gold?
Building new can help you avoid the heat and uncertainty of auctions, LVR restrictions and expensive renovations for minimum rental dwelling standards. With potential capital gain at handover, alongside an industry leading 10 year warranty, investing in property doesn’t come much smarter. In a New Zealand context, infill housing is defined as the construction of an additional dwelling on an existing residential site, through a process known as subdivision. Think putting a new house in your back garden. Because of this good use of space in an existing suburb, infill housing forms an integral part of high urban planning objectives.

new house in your existing area is a desirable prospect for many consumers.
At G.J. Gardner Homes we have many options for you if you’re considering making the most out of your current section, and believe we can help you as our team are ready and primed, offering to evaluate your existing home as to its suitability for subdivision, with a no obligation Preliminary Development Appraisal of site potential.
Medium Density
So what are your options? With land prices through the roof it’s reassuring knowing that your current property could potentially be a goldmine.
Medium density developments allow multiple dwellings to be constructed on a single section, usually through the provision of a shared intertenancy wall, for example terraced houses.
Subdividing
Infill housing is one of many land optimisation opportunities, and like medium density it allows intensification without the negative perception of higher density apartment living. The increased population mass also makes this

in the same position as a good standing posture – whether you’re lying on your back or side. Choose comfort Comfort is just as important as support in a mattress. You can have both. Support comes from the innerspring unit and the comfort level comes from the type of padding. You can choose from softer or firmer comfort layers while being sure you have good support at the same time. It all depends on your personal comfort level preference. Be selfish When you share your bed with a partner, you don’t want to be affected by their every turn and shift in the night. Find a bed which allows you both independence of movement so that your side of the bed doesn’t bounce and creak every time your sleeping partner moves. Quality counts The old rule of “you get what you pay for” applies to beds as in everything else. If you scrimp and buy a poor quality bed now, you may be paying later in terms of lost sleep. Shop for the best value and not the lowest price. You spend 26 years of your life in bed so buying the best bed you can afford is a healthy investment.
Seek support Correct support is vital to a healthy sleep. A good mattress and foundation will gently support your body at all points to keep your spine

Collaboratively, our Cruise Connections team has spent more than 50 years serving the New Zealand travel industry. Deciding to start our own specialist cruise company which shares our knowledge, passion and experience directly with the traveller themselves - Cruise Connections was launched in January 2013. Now, almost five years on and many happy clients later, over 70 per cent of our business comes from referrals and repeat clients. The Agency Cruise Connections is one of a small select group of travel agents in New Zealand that are members of Cruiseco. Cruiseco is a consortium of ‘Cruise Specialist Travel Agents’ providing Cruise Connections with a wide range of exclusive cruise holidays and special cruise offers, including chartered vessels to unique ports that most other Travel Agencies cannot offer. Cruise Connections is also an approved ‘Air New Zealand Travel Broker’ assuring consumer protection
and peace of mind, in addition to some great airfares. With Air New Zealand, we offer a full booking service of airfares with all airlines, accommodation, car hire, motor coach touring even self-drive canal boating. Our Philosophy We have a simple philosophy To create the best experience before, during and after your cruise! So, whether you decide to book in person, via our website or by telephone, then you will always be assured of great service. Our clients often remark on the ease of dealing
with one expert for everything (and at no extra cost) rather than having to deal with multiple online sites. Cruising With Luxury Cruising, ships are smaller with a very high staff to guest ratio, allowing guests to experience small ports that are inaccessible to larger ships, a superior unsurpassed personal service, gourmet dining and elegant accommodations. Many are ‘all inclusive’ so you don’t need to pay extra once onboard for drinks, shore excursions or gratuities. River Cruising had its origins in
This is a great way to tour inland – unpack once, no early morning wake-up calls and sleep in the same bed every night of your holiday. River cruising is also popular in the USA on the Mississippi and Snake Rivers and in Asia on the Mekong, Irrawaddy and Yangtze. Don’t want to travel too far? Then Close to Home Cruising is for you. With a number of cruises that take in our own New Zealand coast line, Australia’s varied landscapes and the Pacific Rim. Cruising the Pacific is ideal for multi generations as there is always something for everyone. From kids’ clubs to watersports, Broadway shows to lectures and some that are kid-free. With all meals and accommodation included the value for money is exceptional. Come in and see us – we would love to help you find your dream holiday.

Take time to talk D
o your children, grandchildren and friends know the defining moments of your life?
Do they know the day you laughed so hard you cried? Do they know your proudest achievement or your favourite teacher? Do they know who taught you to ride a bike, swim or drive a car? The sharing of your life story isn’t something that has to be done in your absence, don’t leave it up to someone else to tell your story – do it now, when you can enjoy being a part of the conversation. We plan for so many events in our life, but New Zealanders don’t appear so keen to plan for their funeral.
‘Honouring and celebrating life.’
As Funeral Directors, every day we see the difficulties families have when trying to make the decisions which will best honour their loved one’s life. Why not ease your family’s burden by letting them know your opinions ahead of time.
Our friendly, caring and qualified team promise to organise a funeral service which is appropriate and meaningful for you and your family.
Talk to us about Pre Payment and Pre Planning options

Resthaven has two well appointed locations in Howick and Manurewa with a qualified team of funeral directors to take time to talk to you about honouring and celebrating your life.

Old-fashioned courtesy, good service and consistency of prices T
wo names many locals know to trust are that of Mike Johnson and his business, Howick Tyres & Alignment. After 42 years in the industry, he now often works with the third generation of local families he began dealing with in the 1980s. “Often young ones will say to me, their grandfather recommended my business to them,” Mike explains. These comments make the community-minded Mike (he’s a local boy – grew up and went to school in Howick) very proud. “It means Howick Tyres & Alignment were recommended because of our old-fashioned courtesy, good service and consistency of prices over the years.” About three years ago and after 16 years under the Beaurepaires Howick banner, Howick Tyres & Alignment reverted to its original
name. Mike and his wife, Carol, bought the business in 1986 – which he has been managing from 1981. Major stockists of Continental tyres, they can get in most of the type of tyres required – all at competitive prices and in a short time frame. The company has recently invested in an upgrade on their wheel alignment machine, bringing their equipment up to date with the very latest in cutting edge technology. Mike and Carol are assisted by two workers, including James Butler, who has worked there for Howick Tyres & Alignment for eight years. The Howick Tyres team will also check your tyres pressures and even pump up tyres completely free of charge. “I recommend this check every six week,” he explains. Other services on offer: • Tyre Fitting

The workshop is very well presented and immaculate – no worries about getting smart business clothes soiled or oil on your new shoes there – and the business is very professionally run.

He is often known as “Mad Mike” because of his pranks – such as making minions from tyres. But, the couple are serious about their business and giving back to the local community. It is a proud supporter of the charity, Bellyful East Auckland, which provides meals for families with newborn babies or young children who may be suffering an illness.

ew Zealand’s plastic surgeons are among the finest in the world. Local people are fortunate to have one of the most experienced plastic surgeons, Dr Martin Rees, based two days a week at Marina Specialists, in the Compass Building at Half Moon Bay Marina. A Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon, who has been in private practice since 1988, he founded the Auckland Plastic Surgical Centre in Remuera in 1996. With the assistance of Dr Bruce Page, Mr Rees established the Marina Specialists in 2009. Mr Rees began his plastic surgical training at Middlemore Hospital, passing his final exam for his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1979. Returning to New Zealand in 1985, he co-founded the Cranio Facial Clinic at Middlemore Hospital, specialising in cleft/cranio maxillo facial surgeries. His pioneering work with facial and jawbone distraction technology has enabled Mr Rees and others to effectively treat previously untreatable conditions.
An Intimate Wedding Ceremony in a simple 1850’s chapel at the Howick Historical Village
The bulk of Mr Rees’ work at Half Moon Bay covers skin cancer. His field of expertise also encompasses cosmetic facial, breast and abdominal surgeries, liposculpture, cleft lip and palate, cranio maxillo facial, micro-vascular and hand surgery. His main interests now are facelifts, blepharoplasty (eyelids), rhinoplasty (noses), otoplasty (ears), hand and skin cancer surgery. “Minor surgeries for skin cancers, hand surgeries and minor cosmetic procedures can be done under local or intravenous anaesthetic in the Marina Specialists Theatre,” he says. “While I can do consultations and after-care for major surgeries at Marina Specialists, patients who need a general anaesthetic are treated though my Auckland Plastic Surgical Centre rooms and Remuera Surgical Care in the OneHealth Building at 122 Remuera Road. “If you are considering surgery, do see a local plastic surgeon for high quality work and great follow-up care. Our surgeons are among the best trained in the world,” he says.

Local Oceanz Seafood store takes out top chip award O
ceanz Seafood market on Ti Rakau Drive in Botany Downs was recently named as Auckland’s Top Chip Shop 2017. The award is the run by The Chip Group which is a division of Potatoes New Zealand. To qualify for the award, stores have to produce chips with a fat content below 9 per cent. Once qualified, stores are mystery shopped and a number of factors are assessed in deciding the winner. This is the second time the Botany store has won the award and the sixth time an Oceanz Seafood outlet has taken out a regional award. Store owner Ali Lokhandwala paid tribute to his staff when collecting the award and in particular head cook Rita Harris who has been at the Botany Outlet for over ten years. Ali calls Rita the “Fish & Chip Mother” as her dedication to producing a consistent quality product is what has kept the store at the top of its game over a long period of time.
changing it regularly and also having access to the best quality, fresh fish in New Zealand which helps ensure that the oil is well maintained.
Ali said other keys to their success was using the best quality oil,
While quality oil and fish are much more expensive, it does allow Ali to
sleep better knowing his customers are getting the best product that is available. Oceanz Botany are celebrating their 13th birthday this week and the award proves that it is not an
unlucky number for everyone. Come visit Oceanz at 451 Ti Rakau Drive to see their great collection of fresh and frozen seafood along with the award-winning Fish & Chips – you won’t be disappointed.

A sense of family W
elcome is what you feel when you walk into Kilimanjaro Dental Centre, There is always a friendly greeting from the staff. “Our philosophy is to treat everyone like family, which extends to the community and has a sense of continuity,” says Anita who started the practice 14 years ago. “Knowing that someone cares about your dental health and is there at the end of the telephone for help or advice makes people feel better. They know they are valued,” she explains. We empower patients to maintain good dental and oral health. “Nothing can ever replace your natural teeth and we encourage our patients to look after their teeth,” she says. Anita has a very special affinity for her young patients and, as a mother of two she particularly likes working with children. She also has a resounding success rate with young patients. The centre is contracted to the Ministry of Health to provide free dental care for adolescents up to the age of 18, and also provides free dental care to patients referred by the Auckland Regional Dental Services.
Dr Michael Zhuo, left, and Dr Anita Zaveri of Kilimanjaro Dental Centre.
We are fortunate to have Dr. Michael Zhuo now working with us, and he adds to the skills set with IV sedation techniques for nervous adult patients. And to make it really convenient for our patients, the centre offers Orthodontic treatment by a registered specialist orthodontist, Dr. Prashant Zaveri, who treats both adults and children. His experience in the field of orthodontics is invaluable.

Southern Cross Partners investments
P
eer to Peer lending is a way of bringing borrowers and investors together. We lend funds to borrowers with property as security and offer that first mortgage security to investors to invest in. A key feature of our product is that we front the risk by lending our own money first to borrowers, before offering investors an opportunity to invest in the mortgage. So all loans offered on our on-line platform we have initially funded ourselves and if for whatever reason a loan is not taken up by investors we are happy to retain it. But the biggest feature is how investors’ funds are supported by a registered first mortgage over New Zealand property. This ‘Bricks & Mortar’ model has attracted many investors who like the mortgage security we provide as part of our investment package. At Southern Cross Financial we have been in business since 1997 providing short term, mortgage
finance to property owners throughout New Zealand. We have had years of experience vetting borrowers and analysing applications to ensure we lend prudent levels against sufficient security to the right borrowers. We then offer these mortgages to investors to partake in, with rates ranging from 6.25% to 7.50% (these are our current rates and are subject to change). The investor gets a competitive return, with a first mortgage registered over the borrower’s property, held on their behalf by our Nominee company. [Like all investments, there are risks and we take proactive steps to achieve the best results possible for our investors.] To find out more call us for a brochure today. Stylish and high-quality Hyundai vehicles T
i Rakau Drive commuters have no doubt noticed Armstrong Motor Group’s latest addition to its flagship dealership - East Auckland Hyundai, which opened its doors to customers last month. It’s owned by Armstrong Motor Group, which also operates 12 other dealerships and represents 19 brands in total across the country. The new dealership is more than 11,000m2, with a 5500m2 square foot of floor space, 21 service bays and seven grooming bays – all equipped with the latest technology, diagnostic equipment and of course, a high-tech coffee machine for customers waiting on vehicles being serviced. The facility’s design reflects Hyundai’s new Global Dealership Space Identity that is currently being rolled out worldwide. This new concept stems from Hyundai’s underlining commitment to delivering greater levels of customer satisfaction and becoming the most-loved automotive brand. This new identity goes further than the traditional car showroom. It combines open space, modern furnishings and the latest technology to deliver an enhanced customer experience. Customer emotion, vehicle motion and the outdoors are concepts that influenced the dealerships visual aesthetic. The dealerships warm, bronze exterior tones combined with natural light flows through the interior, resulting in a bright, airy and sophisticated ambience right through into the service bay.
The new Ti Rakau Drive dealership is half occupied by Mercedes-Benz Botany which operates with separate sales and service facilities on the left-hand side of the site. Founder and Managing Director of Armstrong Motor Group, Rick Armstrong has high hopes that the brands will act as complementary partners, creating a diversified automotive centre that East Auckland has lacked up until now. “East Auckland Hyundai is an immaculate new facility that showcases the stylish, high-quality, well-equipped Hyundai vehicles in the new Hyundai line up,” said Armstrong. “It was a long process getting the site to the standard we wanted and we are incredibly happy with the outcome. The dealership is in the centre of one of New Zealand’s fastest growing areas and having Hyundai – a quality high volume brand with a wide range of vehicles will compliment Mercedes-Benz, and is a perfect fit for us,” Armstrong concluded. Combined, the two new dealerships have created over 60 new jobs for the East Auckland region. “We’re working on building a reputation for hiring the best people, then delivering exceptional customer service and customer care programs at every touch point,” says James Davy, the new dealer principal for East Auckland Hyundai. “Our investment and large-scale recruitment demonstrates our commitment to the Auckland region,
particularly in the east and our confidence in this area’s growing economy” James credits the early success of the dealership to a passionate team along with the strength and growing reputation of the Hyundai brand and its commitment to adapting with technology. Utilizing the latest in technical expertise and leading technologies, the service centre technicians at East Auckland Hyundai are factory trained to help maintain and protect the new purchases made from the dealership. By carrying genuine Hyundaispecific parts and accessories, East Auckland Hyundai aims to offer the highest quality and friendly mechanical service at a competitive price for both Hyundai drivers and vehicle owners of other brands alike. Being the newest dealership in the Hyundai network also comes with its advantages. The dealership was the first to make available the new Hyundai i30 to its East Auckland audience and Davy expects to see these opportunities arise more frequently in the future.
Davy intends to have a strong focus on customer experience and offers competitive pricing on all services including finance options through Hyundai Finance New Zealand. The dealership opened with a finance promotion offering customers the opportunity to own a brand-new Hyundai at 0 per cent interest. “Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, so our new dealer identity has been designed around them. It provides a space for sales and after sales engagement and adds a new dimension – where customers can truly experience the Hyundai brand,” Davy concludes. For the Armstrong Motor Group, this further expands its Auckland footprint with dealerships already in Grey Lynn, Greenlane and Mt Wellington. The two dealerships at 279 Ti Rakau Drive, Botany are by far the largest established by the privately-operated dealership network. With a successful first few weeks for the new dealership and a strong sense of momentum, the future looks bright for East Auckland Hyundai and its team.
“Hyundai is coming on strong with stylish, high-value vehicles which we can offer first to our customers, these are also backed by the best warranty in the business,” says Davy. “There’s a lot of interest in the brand among smart shoppers and we’re excited to offer Hyundai’s expanding lineup along with outstanding service support to car buyers in the East Auckland region.”
