Ryman Healthcare, trusted since 1984 As a company that thrives on a relationship of trust with our residents, we can’t think of a better accolade to win than the Most Trusted Brand Award in our sector. And to win for the fourth time means you’ve really taken us to heart – so thank you New Zealand! The award is especially important because trust means everything in our business. Our residents – and their families – trust us to care for them 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We would hate to let anyone down. Since 1984 we’ve been providing care that has to be ‘good enough for Mum.’ Residents who move into a Ryman village know they can trust in the quality of our resort-style facilities, the choice and flavour in our Delicious menus, and our full continuum of care that provides
centres when the mains power goes out. Putting our residents first has always been our priority at Ryman, and trust is a vital part of this. To be voted the Most Trusted Brand is pretty special, as it means we are doing right by our residents, and that’s what is most important. And it is an accolade we don’t take for granted, and we will be working hard to win again next year.
retirement living options from independent and assisted living in a serviced apartment, to resthome, hospital and dementia care.▲ Residents can also trust in our Ryman peace of mind guarantees. These include some of the most resident-friendly terms in New Zealand, such as a fixed weekly fee* and a deferred management fee that is capped at 20%. Because that trust means so much to us, we are constantly refining our systems to ensure we’re always learning and improving. Innovations such as our electronic care app, myRyman, has been rolled out this year. myRyman improves communication and the ability to build trusting relationships between residents, relatives and staff. We have also rolled out emergency generators to all of our villages, ensuring that we can keep the lights on in our village care ▲

Still bringing you the news Reay Neben was there on day one when the Howick and Pakuranga Times published its very first paper 46 years ago. Since then, she and her team have worked hard to bring the news to this community and along the way has built up a special connection and trust readers and customers. Here’s Reay’s take on things...
B
ack in 1972, a local newspaper was started to serve the fast-growing areas of Howick and Pakuranga. This fledgling area, that was steeped in history, had two councils responsible for servicing it. The old Howick Borough Council, of course, looked after Howick while the newly-formed Manukau City Council looked after Pakuranga and Bucklands and Eastern beaches as there was no Botany, Highland Park or Meadowlands – those areas were farms. Our first story was about starting a petition to form an Eastern City and we never quite got there. But in 2010, when the Super City was formed, the city created the Howick Ward which has the largest population of any ward in Auckland and is the size of Dunedin. Not quite its own city but close. This was a very exciting time to be involved with this community as change was happening at a great pace and we as the local newspaper were the recorder of history and viewed the changes from a position of privilege. We had a philosophy back then that no story ran in the paper that wasn’t in some way connected to this community. We have never changed that philosophy and today,
Co-founder of Howick and Pakuranga Times, Reay Neben. after publishing the Howick and Pakuranga Times for the past 46 years, we are still the preferred and only locally-owned newspaper servicing the area. Over the 46 years, the newspaper grew to publishing three

times a week while many other publications were also added to our stable of mastheads, but always with the reputation of publishing the Howick and Pakuranga Times. Our name within the industry
and this community elicits respect out of knowledge that we have always been to true to being the local newspaper. Over the years the papers and our team members have won many awards for excellence and many times we have won the awards for community involvement, editorial excellence, sales excellence, best feature, best advertisement design, best photography, best front page, and best all round newspaper. In 2002, we entered the new medium called the internet and, as one of the first newspapers in New Zealand to have launched a website, we were able to secure the domain name times.co.nz. This website grew and in 2005 we won a prestigious marketing award from the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers Association. Amazingly, we won with our coverage of the local Miss Howick beauty contest beating out the Sydney Morning Herald’s Olympics 2004 site. As co-founder of this newspaper, I have seen so many changes and enjoyed being part of the action. As the owner of a local newspaper you are told things that are confidential or off the record and that would not happen if you were not a name you could trust.

P
eer to Peer lending is a way of bringing borrowers and investors together. We lend funds to borrowers with property as security and offer that first mortgage security to investors to invest in. A key feature of our product is that we front the risk by lending our own money first to borrowers, before offering investors an opportunity to invest in the mortgage. So all loans offered on our on-line platform we have initially funded ourselves and if for whatever reason a loan is not taken up by investors we are happy to retain it. But the biggest feature is how investors’ funds are supported by a registered first mortgage over New Zealand property. This ‘Bricks & Mortar’ model has attracted many investors who like the mortgage security we provide as part of our investment package. At Southern Cross Financial we have been in business since 1997 providing
short term, mortgage finance to property owners throughout New Zealand. We have had years of experience vetting borrowers and analysing applications to ensure we lend prudent levels against sufficient security to the right borrowers. We then offer these mortgages to investors to partake in; with rates ranging from 6.25 per cent to 8 per cent (these are our current rates and are subject to change). The investor gets a competitive return, with a first mortgage registered over the borrower’s property, held on their behalf by our Nominee Company. Like all investments, there are risks and we take proactive steps to achieve the best results possible for our investors. Ryman makes life easier for Jean and Lionel The Hortons enjoy life’s simple pleasures at Bruce McLaren
J
ean Horton is used to making new friends, after immigrating from Scotland in the 1950s and spending many years moving around New Zealand with her veterinarian husband Lionel. But since moving into Ryman Healthcare’s Bruce McLaren retirement village three years ago, Jean, 88, has appreciated the value of friendship even more. Every day she walks down to Lionel’s room in the resthome from her serviced apartment so she can tend to him and spend time in his company, all the while building relationships with the other residents. “It’s rather nice because I’m mingling a lot with the residents in Lionel’s area and they appreciate a bit of conversation. “Sometimes I might be frivolous, or sometimes I will be serious, especially if they’re not feeling well. We might talk about their past or find some other way of connecting, it’s just five or ten minutes here and there but it makes a big differ-

ence to people. You just make friends and that’s lovely.” Seeing Jean and Lionel settled into the village was something the couple’s daughter Fiona had wanted to happen before she passed away from cancer in 2015. With Lionel having a mild form of dementia, Fiona had been helping Jean with his care until she became too ill, so knowing extra care and support was in place gave her great peace of mind. Jean had first noticed changes in his behaviour about 10 years after he retired at the age of 60. “He wasn’t coping with different sorts of things and we put up with it for a while but then realised it wasn’t going to get any better. “I just felt the time was right to move into the village and it made sense to be secure, especially at night,” says Jean. A chance conversation with her neighbour and his wife, who worked in the special care unit at Ryman’s Edmund
Hillary village in Remuera, prompted Jean to check out Bruce McLaren which was closer to their home of 35 years in Howick. “They were telling me what it was like and what to expect and it all just dovetailed from there. “The experience was really easy, really good. This is our life now and we make the most of it.” Being in a serviced apartment means Jean gets looked after a little bit too, with cleaning and laundry taken care of, and delicious cooked meals provided in the village centre dining room. “It’s important that I look after myself so that I’m a constant for Lionel. He needs me to be grounded and well,” she says. Typically, Jean spends most of her time with Lionel. The village organises regular outings to local beaches or attractions or she will sit with Lionel doing puzzles. “The latest thing is wordsearches. The first one we did the word was veterinarian!
He’s always been a word person and he loves to research. “I think being here has helped him, it’s stopped him just sitting and doing nothing.” While she devotes most of her time to Lionel, if she needs to be somewhere else she knows he will be happy and looked after. “Now I can explain that and he retains it, and knowing that he himself is comfortable is reassuring for me. “He’s very accepting and he’s used to the staff who are all great.” Jean loves inviting her grown-up grandsons along to social hour downstairs in the village centre and laughs at their reactions. “They just love coming over here and they say it’s so comfortable,” she says. “It’s our extended living room.” Phone Rose on 535 0225 to discuss your retirement living options and to arrange a private tour.

The importance of building trust By Bindi Norwell
B
uilding trust is imperative in any industry, but in the real estate industry it’s crucial as agents are often dealing with the buying and selling of people’s biggest asset – their home. In the majority of cases, people are moving homes because they’re upsizing and it’s an exciting time for the family. However, there can be very emotive circumstance around why people are moving – someone in the family may be sick so they’re downsizing or someone may have lost their job, so, it’s imperative that agents can build trust with their clients to help them through this emotional time. One of the questions I get asked on a regular basis is how do I find an agent I trust? Selling your home can be a daunting process, so our advice is to start by talking to family, friends, people from your church/ recreational hobbies as to whether they have used an agent locally and had a positive experience and found someone they can recommend. An agent’s reputation is one of the key ways they get referrals and repeat business. I usually then recommend people should talk to a few different agents to
Bindi Norwell, the chief executive of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand. Photo supplied really get a good feel for who is in your local area. Selling a house often makes the top 10 list of life’s most stressful events, so it’s important during this time that you begin building an excellent rapport with your agent – especially if things don’t go as smoothly as planned throughout the selling process so that you trust them to still achieve a good result for you. Key factors to look for in an agent to show trust can include: ■■ Active listening – is your agent really
listening to you and understanding what it is you’re trying to achieve? The saying that “people deal with people that they know, like and trust” is never truer than it is in the real estate industry ■■ Punctuality and respect – has the agent returned your calls/e-mails in a timely manner? Have they turned up to your house on time? If they were stuck in traffic and running late did they let you know in advance? Have they put their phone on silent and focused on you as a potential vendor? ■■ Experience – can the agent talk to you about similar situations they’ve faced? Or how they have fixed problems that have happened in the past? Have they talked in facts rather than generic sentences? However, it’s worth pointing out that everyone needs to start somewhere, so don’t discount someone just because they’re new to the industry – their ambition to succeed could prove more successful
for you than someone who has many years’ experience. ■■ Local knowledge – can they demonstrate knowledge of your local area and community, ideally with a network of potential buyers? This can help ensure your property is best positioned and marketed to potential buyers. ■■ Testimonials – do they have strong testimonials from previous clients? Will they let you ring “Mr & Mrs Smith from 123 Green Street” and talk to you about their experience of dealing with that agent?
The REINZ
Bindi Norwell is the Chief Executive of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) which is the industry body for around 15,000 real estate agents around the country. REINZ has the most complete and accurate real estate data in New Zealand as its sales are based on actual sales reported by real estate agents whereas other organisations use information from Territorial Authorities regarding settlement meaning there can be a delay of four to six weeks before the sale is recorded.

Love affair with Whittaker’s is sweet, and rich in fidelity Readers Digest says being ranked on the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands list is a great achievement. It means a company is genuine, authentic, reliable and consistent – and only the best brands can manage this.
A
rguably it may be an ever-lasting relationship, as, for the seventh consecutive year, Whittaker’s has been voted most trusted brand of all those surveyed in the annual Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands survey. The repeated success can be attributed to a number of things, says the company’s chief sales officer Matt Whittaker. “We think it is a combination of our 122-year history, reliability for quality, and our innovation in creating tempting new products over recent years – sometimes in collaboration with other iconic Kiwi brands, or in support of important causes. All this has helped us maintain that trusted status,” Matt says. He believes the company maintains quality product as it makes all its chocolate from one factory in Porirua and controls the entire manufacturing process, from roasting the cocoa beans to wrapping the finished product. “In that context, this award is a fantastic acknowledgement of all of our wonderful staff, who live our company values every day.
www.times.co.nz
“We are also fortunate to have on our doorstep quality suppliers of ingredients we use to make our chocolate, which also enables us to tell a richer New Zealand story about the products we export,” he says. The family business was also voted winner of the New Zealand Iconic Brands category and took out the top confectionery accolade too. These same results were achieved by Whittaker’s last year. Air New Zealand and Tip Top were highly commended in the New Zealand Iconic Brands category. Comments from those surveyed included praise for Whittaker’s quality ingredients, business integrity, local manufacturing, prices, advertising, and care for the environment. Matt Whittaker says the praise and repeated wins are an honour. He says the Reader’s DigestTrusted Brand award is seen as “a testament to our absolute commitment to quality and our genuine engagement with Whittaker’s Chocolate Lovers”. Brands joining Whittaker’s in finishing
in top slots this year are: 1. Whittaker’s (Confectionery) 2. Whittakers (New Zealand iconic brand) 3. Air New Zealand 4. Canon 5. Toyota 6. Nikon 7. Resene 8. Tip Top (Ice Cream) 9. Sleepyhead 10. Dilmah The annual survey has grown over the years to include 65 categories of products and services, reflecting a broad range of industries. The full results, including highly commended accolades, appear in the July 2018 Reader’s Digest and can be found on www.readersdigest.co.nz. Reader’s Digest APAC Group Editor Louise Waterson says this year marks the 19th time the annual Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands survey has been commissioned. “Ranking trusted brands remains as valuable an exercise as ever, it would appear. After all, consumers of today tell us the number one quality they demand of a brand is… honesty.” She says being ranked on the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands list is a great achievement. It means a company is
genuine, authentic, reliable and consistent – and only the best brands can manage this. While welcoming newcomers to the list, she applauds those who are repeat performers, as maintaining a laudable ranking involves “a genuine, on-going commitment to protect and fulfil the promises made to the consumer”. The survey reveals New Zealanders like to start their day with Sanitarium, Vogels and coffee (courtesy of their Breville machine) and end it with a Villa Maria wine purchased from Pak’nSave. They favour Toyotas (cleaned with Turtle Wax) and prefer them to have Bridgestone tyres, and be topped up with fuel from Z – if they bike instead, it’s on an Avanti. If vacuuming and cleaning are chores that can’t be ignored then Dyson is the cleaner to trust, and Dettol the cleaning product. Meanwhile a Masport will take care of the lawn and a Bosch power tool will handle the DIY project. A Sleepyhead bed – New Zealanders’ favoured bed – will look even better than ever at the end of such an active day.

s New Zealand finds itself marking Sorted Money Week, Financial Services Complaints Limited is urging Kiwis not to fall for romance scams and is commending the financial services industry for its efforts to protect consumers. The independent disputes resolution service is raising the red flag after receiving a number of complaints that centre around sophisticated romance type scams. “The irony in these cases is that the complainants’ issue is typically with the financial service provider who has refused a transaction, suspecting a scam, not with the scammer,” says Susan Taylor, FSCL chief executive officer. “Our complainants have remained under the illusion that they are in a genuine relationship.” In one recent case, the complainant had been in an online relationship with a Nigerian woman for around eight years. During that time he had sent her money to fund her nursing studies and had recently purchased tickets for her to move to New

Zealand. When the complainant tried to send additional funds as a ‘pre travel allowance’, he was dismayed that the money remitter declined the transaction, suspecting a scam. He complained to FSCL, acknowledging that Nigeria was a country known for scams, but adamant that his relationship was real. The money remitter responded that it would reconsider its decision if the complainant could provide supporting information such as confirmation from Nigeria’s emigration department or photographs of the pair together. Ms Taylor said that FSCL had explained that although the money remitter provided a service, it was not obliged to transfer money for him. Jennian Homes raises the bar
T
he beginning of spring seems to always herald new activity and plans for a brighter future. Not surprisingly, it’s a time when people start to think about ‘home’ with a focus on tidying up and starting new projects, and the building industry sees a correlating upsurge in enquiry. Jennian Homes CBD & East Auckland Ltd is well poised for this new activity with the addition of an in-house designer to their team. When asked the name of that new team member, franchisee Emma Langhorne Verberne was keeping it on the low down. “Our new man is a little on the modest side and doesn’t like to blow his own trumpet. But I think it will be a nice surprise for our clients to see the level of talent we now have working with us. “Suffice to say the creative talent of this gentleman will raise our profile even further into the design and build market we are in. We’ve always been known for more creative, individual designs, but this will up the ante further still.”
The burning question is, aren’t all the group home builders the same? Don’t they all do the same sorts of things and design and build in the same sort of way? Emma was outspoken on this point. “Are we all the same? No way! Apart from the fact that when it comes to life, to business to anything, it’s always about ‘people’ and we do have some exceptional people on our team, it’s also about the Jennian quality differences. “There are plenty of builders out there, some good some not so good, but many group home builders work to the building code.” Building Code... But at the risk of asking the obvious question, isn’t that what every builder should be building to? “Well yes and no. Building code is not necessarily a best practice – it provides for minimum standards in many instances. For example, insulation, there is a minimum requirement for building code and then there’s what will be best for you. There’s a difference,” says Emma. “When you think about building a
Jennian Homes CBD & East Auckland – building homes for the future. home, do you want something that just scrapes through the minimum code requirements, or do you want something that might weather the years, the fun, the parties, the bakeoffs, (the arguments!), the life that will be lived in it, a little more robustly? “At Jennian Homes, our clients understand that quality is not just a word to be
bandied about. It’s not just a perception, pretty pictures or smooth salesmanship. Quality is about the things you can touch, see and hold.” That sounds fair enough. So perhaps if you are looking at building a home, you might want to give Jennian CBD & East Auckland Ltd a call – and when you find out about ‘that new guy’ let us know.

Tile Depot with tiles to suit all
B
uckland’s Beach locals, Craig and Prue Syddall, could not have foreseen when they opened their first store in Panmure 23 years ago that today they would be the proud owners of 14 stores across the country. At the time, they did however see a place in the market for a down to earth family tile company giving good honest advice and providing quality products to kiwi families for their homes. And they couldn’t have been more right. The family business now boasts six family members working alongside the 90-strong team at the Tile Depot. Times have changed since the first store opened in Panmure with just one employee, Craig, who is still a valued member of the Tile Depot team today. In those days, the range consisted of just 23 tiles, all from Italy. The style at the time dictated that 22 of these were beige with just one grey tile. Now the Tile Depot has over 1,000 tiles in their range with something to suit everyone. The Syddalls say the advancements in ceramic technology and digital printing has been exciting to watch develop, with genuine stone look products, wood grain tiles and even a bit of colour splashed around the showroom. This early connection to Italy, formed the Tile Depot brand and while the range has grown over the years to include tiles not just from Italy but from all over the

It is important to the Syddalls that they offer great range, value and quality. “It is very heartening to see the satisfaction and happiness that can come from good service and quality products,” says Prue Syddall. As the only tile retailer in New Zealand to have achieved Consumer Trusted accreditation, the Tile Depot takes this responsibility seriously and are proud to wear the Consumer Trusted badge. “With our family values and dedication
to bringing quality tiles to New Zealand homes, we were really honoured to be accredited,” says Mike Syddall, Craig and Prue’s son, and now general manager of the Tile Depot. Taking a stroll through the Tile Depot these days, it’s easy to see how much has changed from the small 100m2 footprint of the original store. With most of the 14 stores now sitting at over 800m2, customers will not only find great deals on an exceptional range of quality international tiles but also bathware and laminate flooring.

good standing posture – whether you’re lying on your back or side.
Choose comfort
Comfort is just as important as support in a mattress. You can have both. Support comes from the innerspring unit and the comfort level comes from the type of padding. You can choose from softer or firmer comfort layers while being sure you have good support at the same time. It all depends on your personal comfort level preference.
Be selfish
When you share your bed with a partner, you don’t want to be affected by their every turn and shift in the night. Find a bed which allows you both independence of movement so that your side of the bed doesn’t bounce and creak every time your sleeping partner moves.
Quality counts
The old rule of “you get what you pay for” applies to beds as in everything else. If you scrimp and buy a poor quality bed now, you may be paying later in terms of lost sleep. Shop for the best value and not the lowest price. You spend 26 years of your life in bed so buying the best bed you can afford is a healthy investment. Is green the new gold?
T
he Kiwi fascination with property means that many of us have considered an investment property at some time or another. If you’re looking to start or grow your property portfolio, then why not consider making the most out of your existing section. Building new can help you avoid the heat and uncertainty of auctions, LVR restrictions and expensive renovations for minimum rental dwelling standards. With potential capital gain at handover, alongside an industry leading 10 year warranty, investing in property doesn’t come much smarter. In a New Zealand context, infill housing is defined as the construction of an additional dwelling on an existing residential site, through a process known as subdivision. Think putting a new house in your back garden. Because of this good use of space in an existing suburb, infill housing forms an integral part of high urban planning objectives. Infill housing is one of many land optimisation opportunities, and like medium density it allows intensification without the negative perception of higher density apartment living. The increased population mass also makes this attractive to the development of amenity, including better public transport and shops. At G.J. Gardner Homes we have many
options for you if you’re considering making the most out of your current section, and believe we can help you as our team are ready and primed, offering to evaluate your existing home as to its suitability for subdivision, with a no obligation Preliminary Development Appraisal of site potential. So what are your options? With land prices through the roof it’s reassuring knowing that your current property could potentially be a goldmine. Subdividing
By subdividing your existing section, a new house can be built. If your section meets criteria, you could choose to live in one and sell the other, or live in one and rent the other. Or perhaps you could choose to sell them both. Either way, a brand new house in your existing area is a desirable prospect for many consumers.
Medium Density
Medium density developments allow multiple dwellings to be constructed on a single section, usually through the provision of a shared intertenancy wall, for example terraced houses. Modern design, with better noise control and streetscape appearance often mean such developments can be extremely attractive to many Kiwis as it can easily cater for singles, couples and families. We can see popular and successful medium density examples in many New Zealand suburbs including Hobsonville Point in Auckland. Knock Down and Remove If you love where you live but don’t love the house you live in, renovating may not be the most cost-effective way to improve your home. Replacing your old place with a brand new home could easily be a smarter investment and will
maximise the value of your location. Modern building standards, lower maintenance and getting the home you’ve always wanted are all major benefits to building new while still retaining your post code. So as many New Zealand cities prepare for long term population growth, why not consider your options whether it’s a new house in the backyard, a replacement of your current home or something bigger. Contact G.J. Gardner Homes today on 09 274 2082 to discuss your indicative, no obligation Preliminary Development Appraisal and find out what options are available to you. www.gjgardner.co.nz

Trust high in public services T
he State Services Commission has published the latest Kiwis Count report. In the 2017 Kiwis Count report, 76 per cent of those surveyed say they are satisfied with the level of service provided by Government agencies, up from 74 per cent last year. Kiwis Count is the only survey that measures New Zealanders’ satisfaction with 43 commonly used public services, which include registering births, using emergency services, applying for a passport, and accessing accident compensation. New Zealanders’ experience when interacting with Government agencies is a key indicator of the trust they have in the Public Service. Debbie Power, deputy state services commissioner, says trust in public services remains high at 79 per cent, the same as last year. “It’s important New Zealanders have trust and confidence in the many vital services they rely on each and every day, as well as the Public Service as a whole. So the results of this latest survey are pleasing,” said Ms Power. Trust in public services is based on personal experience, and is measured by
asking respondents to think about their most recent interaction with the Public Service. The State Services Commission has been asking New Zealanders about their experiences and views of public services for 11 years through Kiwis Count. The latest results also show that of the 32 services that have been measured for five years, the public has experienced a better quality of service in 20 of these. The Kiwis Count survey report can be found on the State Services Commission website at http://ssc.govt.nz/kiwis-count.
The State Services Commission runs a nationwide survey asking New Zealanders about their experiences using public services. Headline results show that Kiwis have high trust in, and satisfaction with, their public services. However, while results have increased steadily from 2007 to 2015, results for both trust-based on personal experience and service quality dropped slightly in 2016 and remain static for 2017. On the other hand, trust in the public sector brand increased to a new high in 2017, although it is still at a relatively low level.

Catalyst Construction’s minor dwellings make an impact M
inor dwellings are increasing in popularity in Auckland, their uses many and varied. Catalyst Construction director, Karl Braithwaite, says the demand is primarily driven by the introduction of the Auckland Unitary Plan and also the SuperCity’s extremely high cost of living. “More and more people are investing in minor dwellings their reasons varying from the need for more space for family through to wanting to set up a retirement income stream,” Karl says. “As Auckland is such an expensive city to live in, making use of existing extra space in the backyard can be a clever move.” Homes of 65m2 or less can now be built as a second dwelling on many sections in Auckland and may not need resource consent. The usual council consent is still required. Furthermore, adding a minor dwelling is often seen as an affordable means of generating added income from existing land, adding value to one’s property and as a way of creating extra space for family – teenage pad, parent accommodation – and for visitors. Also, with the ease of access to global accommodation booking sites, such as Air BNB, short term holiday rentals are also a growing opportunity. However, minor dwellings have been pretty poorly represented to date, Karl says. “The ‘granny flat’ as it is more typically known, has tended to be a low quality, box-like structure which looks more like a 1980’s cabin at a holiday park than an inviting modern home. That’s why Catalyst Construction has introduced its new range of stylish architectural minor dwellings which are beautiful homes in their own right. “We looked at what was available and it was clear that minor dwellings often went hand in hand with minor quality and style. It didn’t make sense to me that just because a house is small, it should also be of lower quality’.” Catalyst Construction’s minor dwellings are beautiful homes in their own right, Karl explains. The five designs offer enough variety to suit a range of tastes, from the three-bedroom QUINCY through to the RICO, the smallest in the range at 61m2. The Quincy (pictured top) has full height glazing which allows the living space to feel bigger than expected. The exterior wing walls allow for privacy and, with three bedrooms, it offers that little bit extra from a minor dwelling footprint.
The Quincy Minor Dwelling by Catalyst Construction has three bedrooms.
The Rico Minor Dwelling by Catalyst Construction is the smallest in the range at 61m2.
The Benny by Catalyst Construction features a sliding kitchen window and door. The Rico (pictured middle) is modern, unobtrusive and big on architectural style. Clad in powder coated metal it features two bedrooms, great storage and an open, north-facing living space. The rest of the range doesn’t disappoint. The BENNY, the HARMON and the
DARTON each offer their own unique and modern style. To find out more about Catalyst’s range of Minor Dwellings, go to www.catalystconstruction.co.nz or email admin@ catalystconstruction.co.nz and request an information pack.
Catalyst Construction was established in 2011 and focuses on building bespoke quality homes and renovations. Director, Karl Braithwaite is the Chairperson of the Eastern Branch of Masterbuilders and the company has achieved multiple Master Builder House of the Year Awards.

Purewa’s innovations put families first
T
he country’s first Mosaic Memorial Pathway to acknowledge still born and new born babies, a redesigned and refurbished Lounge of Remembrance and a new state-of-the-art Administration Office – these are some of the exciting new developments at Purewa Cemetery and Crematorium. The Mosaic Pathway was officially opened and dedicated in April this year by the Bishop of Auckland, the Right Reverend Ross Bay, and is the first of its type in New Zealand. The 95-metre long pathway was designed and laid by wellknown Warkworth artist Joy Bell, who spent six months personally laying each piece of mosaic tile in a blue, green and white pattern. The pathway was specially designed to create a permanent memorial for still born and new born babies who die within the first few weeks of life. Historically parents were rarely granted any contact with their baby and society tended not to acknowledge these tragedies, but the Purewa Cemetery Trust Board believed families would appreciate such a memorial. According to the latest figures, more than 500 babies a year in New Zealand die in these tragic circumstances. The pathway contains 92 circular spaces set into the
Artist Joy Bell putting the finishing touches to the Mosaic Pathway. mosaic tiles, which can be purchased by families from Purewa to memorialise their precious little ones. Each family then works directly with Joy Bell to design a butterfly of their chosen style and colouring which is custom made and installed. In this way, individually
coloured and shaped mosaic butterflies will make a stunning memorial artwork for families to visit. To date five spaces have already been purchased. Another development is the near completion of the redesign and refurbishment of the Lounge of Remembrance, where families can gather for after-funeral catering. Purewa was the first cemetery in Auckland to introduce after-funeral catering in 2003, when the Lounge was converted from the old administration building. The renovated Lounge has a new pitched roof and additional high ceiling windows providing extra natural light and a feeling of spaciousness in a garden setting, which can comfortably accommodate up to 100 funeral guests. Purewa’s ability to offer families full service, professional catering proved very popular, and in January 2017 a second reception lounge, the St John’s Lounge, was opened. The two lounges complement Purewa’s twin chapels allowing two funerals and catering to proceed quite separately at the same time. In September work begins on building new administration offices on the site of the present building. Auckland’s rapidly increasing population and Purewa’s
emphasis on increasing and expanding services and facilities to offer families premium choices means the old offices are no longer fit for purpose. To better meet the privacy needs of families, especially those coming straight from hospitals with still born or new born babies, there will be a Quiet Room, where families can sit while arrangements are being made. The new offices will also contain private interview rooms and better staff facilities. Purewa was created in 1886, when Bishop Cowie asked the Anglican Synod in Auckland for land for a cemetery closer than the newly-opened Waikumete Cemetery in West Auckland. Following his request the St John’s trustees set aside 50 acres of the St John’s land for a cemetery and the first burial took place on January 17, 1889.

With patient care being a priority, Kilimanjaro Dental Centre has long time patients that keep returning to the dental entre over the years, and sometimes just to have a chat with long time practitioner Anita Zaveri. The centre also has out-of-town patients who believe it is worth going the distance for a name they can trust. Guiding the patients to make informed decisions, the team provides a professional, yet friendly and supportive environment. Offering a list of comprehensive dental care, the centre offers orthodontic treatment by registered specialist orthodontist Dr Prashant Zaveri who treats both adults and children. His experience in the field of orthodontics is invaluable. They also offer the service of maxillofacial surgeon Dr Rakesh Jattan who is affiliated with Southern Cross. Known to put patients at instant ease, Dr Jattan is soon going to set up his practice (locally), adding to the convenience of having the specialist in the same area. Another addition to the friendly team is Dr Neha K who has recently joined the practice. Having finished her Australian

Social media
and the evolution of transparency
F
ake news. Data breaches. Privacy concerns. In our hyper-connected, hyper-complicated world, there’s always a question of whether what you see online is accurate or the whole story. People shop and consume information with a healthy dose of scepticism, and brands are fighting an uphill battle to earn the trust – and business – of today’s consumer. The era of distrust is driving demand for greater transparency from power players, brands included, and setting new communication standards. To understand this evolution and the state of transparency in brand-customer relationships, Sprout Social surveyed 1000 US consumers on their transparency beliefs, expectations and desires to develop the study, From Risk to Responsibility: Social Media and the Evolution of Transparency. The research found that 86% of respondents say transparency from businesses is more important than ever before. Thanks to the growth of social media, brands and consumers have unprecedented access to each other. While this intimate connection fuels amazing experiences, it also puts additional responsibility on everyone involved. Consumers’ cards are on the table – they want more transparency, now. It’s time for brands to step up to the plate and
deliver. To avoid striking out, it’s important for decision makers to know what they’re aiming for. What does transparency actually mean to the general public? The largest number of people say transparency is when businesses are open (59%), clear (53%) and honest (49%). These guiding principles give a sense of what consumers are looking for, and they make it clear that there’s more than one way to demonstrate transparency as a business. Although companies should leverage multiple communication channels to make good on the interest in more transparency, this study proves no channel is better suited than social media to forge real connections in authentic ways. On an even grander scale, brands that build strong social relationships founded on transparency remain top of mind with people and boost their bottom lines. Industry research finds nearly three quarters of consumers (73%) are willing to pay more for products that guarantee total transparency. While brands that embody transparency on social media can reap the rewards of a stronger connection with their audience, consumers also identified the risks faced by brands that aren’t making progress in this area. Eighty-six percent of people are likely to take their business to a competitor when there’s a lack of transparency on

social media (44% are very likely)—even greater motivation for brands to develop social transparency strategies now. This is true for every industry. While healthcare and government top the list, consumers have transparency expectations no matter what they’re looking for. With increased food allergies and general awareness about food sourcing and sustainability practices, people are hungry for greater insight into where and how their food is produced. In order to meet – or even exceed – consumer expectations, stakeholders must understand what demonstrates transparency to their target audiences. Consumers’ opinions on transparency are relatively black and white. The greatest number of people feel brands lack transparency when they withhold information (69%). Ignoring questions—regardless of who asks them—can be detrimental as well. Unsurprisingly, people prefer when brands admit their mistakes and are generally forthcoming with company information. What you may not know, however, is the impact of addressing specific topics that not every brand covers by default. For example, 46% of people want brands to be transparent about their employment practices on social media, outpacing topics like financial performance. Similarly, the same number of people (53%) want
brands to be transparent about product or service changes as well as company values, requiring more coverage than marketing or employment practices. Content type also influences how transparently brands’ messages come across on social. For example, people think video is the most transparent content format on social, with 43% specifically naming live video as the most transparent medium. Millennials want an inside look into companies’ values, ranking this higher than information about changes to products and services. Respondents were clear they want to know what brands stand for. In this survey, millennials demonstrated that they’re doubling down on that desire and expecting brands to address what they stand for and who they are. The largest group of consumers (39%) say employees are the most transparent representatives for businesses on social media, so any brand hoping to increase their employee advocacy footprint should put an emphasis on helping leaders “walk the walk” by developing a stronger executive presence on social. Findings from this survey indicate that the harder brands work, the more they stand to earn: ■■ Consumers’ transparency expectations grow daily, and long-term relationships
inspire long-term trust. 86% of respondents believe transparency from businesses is more important than ever before. When brands are transparent and develop a history of transparency, nearly nine in 10 people are more likely to give them second chances after bad experiences and 85% are more likely to stick with them during crises. ■■ Social amplifies transparency, which can create challenges for brands—but offers even bigger rewards. 40% of people who say brand transparency is more important than ever before attribute it to social media. Heightened transparency expectations on social lead to significant benefits and risks. More than half of consumers (53%) are likely to consider brands that are transparent on social media for their next purchase. However, a lack of transparency on social leaves 86% of people likely to take their business to a competitor. ■■ Brands have plenty of room to improve their transparency efforts across social platforms. Eighty-one percent of people believe businesses have a responsibility to be transparent when posting on social media—that’s higher than the standards
Highland Park Medical Highland Park Your Health, Our Community
they set for politicians, friends/family or themselves. But only 15% of consumers believe brands are currently “very transparent” on social media. ■■ CEOs have the unique power to bolster transparency efforts on social media and bring out the best in others. One third of consumers say they would purchase more from brands whose CEOs demonstrate transparency on social. By setting an example of transparency, CEOs can lead the charge in empowering their employees to share and advocate authentically for the brand on social media. ■■ Millennials raise the bar for transparency best practices on social media. Businesses are the group millennials want to be most transparent on social, and this generation is particularly interested in hearing from both brands and CEOs about their values on the channel. The result goes beyond brand loyalty and consideration – CEO transparency impacts millennials’ choice of employers as well. More than one in five millennials say a CEO’s transparency on social media would encourage them to consider a career with that employer in the future.

A complete car dealership representing multiple brands A
ndrew Simms Botany has been a member of the East Auckland community since 2013 and looks forward to celebrating their five year anniversary in November. Having been one of the first franchised dealers in east Auckland, the reception from the local community has been fantastic. According to Dealer Principal Matthew Wales it was a bold move to open a Greenfields dealership in the old Panasonic headquarters in 2013, “But we were confident that with the partnerships we had with the vehicle manufacturers and a landlord with the vision to convert the building into a showroom, we could create a vibrant inviting dealership in an area that was poorly represented by vehicle manufactures. “We can see that with the new dealerships that have opened in the area recently or are presently being built next to our site that this was the right move,” he says. Andrew Simms Botany is privately owned by local owners with shareholder and Dealer Principal Matthew Wales who grew up in Half Moon Bay and attended Pakuranga College. After moving out of the area to attend university, Matthew is now living in Howick and has a real affiliation with the area. Andrew Simms Botany has over 60 team members with a majority of them living in the Howick, Pakuranga, Botany and Ormiston areas. Dealer Principal Matthew Wales puts the success of Andrew Simms Botany down to a number of factors including the fantastic partnerships in the area they
www.times.co.nz
have managed to forge with locally owned businesses and community organisations they have supported that include the Life Education Trust and Botany Crime Watch. He says, “It is outstanding to see our local customers in the dealership either for service or to replace their car. Our team has formed some amazing relationships with our customer base and we have found the local community very welcoming and are glad to have become a trusted brand in the area.” Andrew Simms Botany represents a range of brands from their location at 350 Te Arrange Drive and most recently have added Mitsubishi to their stable. Mitsubishi has a substantial range of passenger cars, SUV’s and commercial vehicles which are well suited to the local market. Andrew Simms has represented Mitsubishi in Newmarket since 2006 so they have some considerable understanding of the product. Mitsubishi offers up to a 10-year warranty on all of their products and with their attractive offers in the marketplace, it is clear to see why they are one of New Zealand’s fastest growing automotive brands. Andrew Simms Botany opened with Kia as one of their mainstream foundation brands. Kia has had fantastic acceptance in east Auckland and in just their first year of operation Andrew Simms Botany were the largest Kia Dealer in New Zealand. The Kia product range is extensive from small cars to SUV’s, large sedans and plug-in Electric Hybrid vehicles.
Having topped the JD Power survey for reliability multiple times, Kia offers outstanding value, quality, specification and reliability. This is certainly a brand to look at if you are in the market for a new vehicle. The Iconic American 4x4 brand Jeep was also a foundation brand for Andrew Simms Botany. With over 75 years of heritage Jeep is an iconic authentic SUV brand. Priced from just $29,990 the Jeeps aggressive styling and legendary off -road capabilities represents outstanding value. Alongside the new vehicle operation, Andrew Simms Botany operates a substantial pre-owned operation from the 3500sqm warehouse at the rear end of the facility. According to Chris Bartlett, the used vehicle clearance centre sales manager, the facility is a great opportunity to browse through a substantial range of vehicles undercover, with over 80 well priced cars in stock from $5000-$100,000 at any time. “We are well worth a visit if you are in the market for a pre-owned vehicle,”
he says. “All of our used vehicles have a 100-point inspection and service and come with a minimum six month warranty alongside two-years roadside assistance to give you piece of mind motoring.” Andrew Simms Botany operates a substantial workshop with over 16 factory trained technicians to ensure your motor vehicle operates smoothly. With all of the latest diagnostic and service tools from all manufactures you can be assured that your car is in the best hands. With an inviting customer lounge with cold drinks, Nespresso coffee and Wi-fi they can accommodate servicing while you wait or offer a courtesy shuttle and loan vehicles if required. The service and parts team have over $250,000 of parts in stock to support all of the vehicles we sell. Andrew Simms Botany are a complete car dealership representing multiple brands with sales, service, parts and finance all conveniently located at 350 Te Irirangi Drive. If you haven’t already visited them, do drop in and meet Matthew and the team.

The Big Fish – prized local catch
T
he Big Fish have been in business for more than 20 years. It was started by owner, Phil Appleyard, (a Buckland’s Beach resident) and the large well-stocked shop has built up a solid reputation for its comprehensive range of top stock – and its affordable prices. Phil has been in the industry for around 40 years, starting off in commercial and now recreational fishing. His dedication to recreational fishing has now evolved into him being the President of the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council. The Big Fish is well-known for having key local fishing knowledge, with all staff being keen anglers. “We offer a wide range of baits, professional reel and rod repairs as well as a huge range of tackle for all types of fishing,” explains Natalie Taumaarua, who has worked at the shop for the past two years and goes fishing whenever she can. “We’re all into fishing at The Big Fish – each of us has a favourite method, including soft baiting, slow jigging or bait fishing, so that helps us give customers great tips.” Natalie is the buyer for the shop and is also an expert rod-builder. She can build a rod from scratch and also does repair work for customers. Paul Emerson is in charge of the reel repairs, which is done in store. Paul has joined the Big Fish team this year, but has been in the industry for just over 15 years. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge
www.times.co.nz
The Big Fish team – Phil, Tegan and Paul. on fishing gear, reel and rod repairs, as well as years of experience fishing for snapper, kingfish, marlin and much more. Yet another new addition to the team is Tegan Goldsmith who has already proven to be a talented rod repairer with a fantastic creative flare. She is also mad keen on fishing and more often than not, out fishes all those around her! The Big Fish has a fishing club, which was launched about the time it started and now has about 250 members. The club, which meets monthly and also organises competitions and other events, is affiliated to the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council. New members are always welcomed along to share fishing information, know-how
and possible stories about the “one that got away.” Some impressive fish specimens, who obviously didn’t get away, have been moulded into very impressive fibreglass moulds to decorate the shop. There’s also a photo-board with an impressive line-up of photographs of fishing success stories. The fishing side of the shop covers a huge range of equipment. This year sees them stocking a new and exciting range of New Zealand made Kilwell rods, which are ( of course) of the highest quality. The Big Fish is also expanding its game fishing range, in rods, reels and game lures. They stock a selection of smokers, ICEY TEK chilly bins, charts, buoyancy aids
(lifejackets) clothing and much more. Within the same building is the dive section, which is also now owned by Phil Appleyard. Phil and Paul are fully licenced dive bottle fillers, both have a boat load of knowledge for where to get a feed of scallops and crayfish. “We supply everything you could possibly need for snorkelling, diving or spear-fishing. It’s a very nice and friendly local business with a real variety of stock and good prices. Anything we don’t have, we can usually have it in store within a day if needed,” Phil says. “We are also the only tank testing station in the community and can guarantee a 12 hour turn around time. The Big Fish team report that recent catches of southern Bluefin tuna by local game fishermen are the best they have encountered in eight years. Snapper fishing is also very good at the moment with the water temp still above average for this time of year. They are now in feeding mode, so it’s a great time of the year to go out and catch some fresh fish for the family. Fishing is becoming very familyoriented with many of the regular customers at The Big Fish now introducing their children to the pleasure of hours of fishing off their boats or wharves. nnovation and technology are the keys to the successful ignition of a wellestablished elite automotive repairer. East Tamaki’s Auto-Mobile Mechanics is a member of the international Bosch Car Service Network, ensuring support and access to the world’s best diagnostic tools and resources used in more than 60 countries. With the majority of European vehicle internal parts and systems manufactured by German multinational, Bosch, when a problem occurs, Auto-Mobile Mechanics can head straight to the source. Owner Peter Morrow says being part of the network has enabled the team to deliver a more technologically accurate, efficient experience that is particularly beneficial for owners of European vehicles. “Bosch technology is used widely for essential vehicle functions such as fuel injection, ABS, traction control and many more. As a result we know the systems inside and out and work closely with technicians around the globe to get to the bottom of the problem.” Established since 1989 in the eastern suburbs, Auto-Mobile Mechanics has gained the trust of locals, thanks to an unwavering dedication to excellence in European car servicing, repairs and diagnostics. Peter and his team are fully trained and well-acquainted with Bosch systems as well as up to date with the latest diagnostics equipment. And because everything is
