between Wellington Street to Ridge Road, in Howick and accused council of inactivity and wasting taxpayers’ money on a survey from which no repair work was forthcoming. “Over two years ago I was delighted to see that all damaged areas had been marked with white spray paint at the edges of each cracked and broken segment. Damage was evident down the length of the street. I presumed it was council who arranged the survey. Two years have passed, most of the paint has worn away and nothing has changed. Taxpayers’ money paid for the wasted work,” she said. Even the footpaths in Lloyd Elsmore Park seem to be in need of attention, as a reader writes: “The ones (paths) running up from the swimming pool end

towards the Homestead are, frankly, unsafe, so eroded are they...I’ve even heard one small child tell his father, ‘I’m not riding up there; it’s too rough’. “For people on foot, they are singularly hazardous, especially in winter and for the elderly.” The Times approached Auckland Council for comment and when asked if council makes regular inspections of footpaths to determine what needs remedial work, Mark Hannan, media relations manager at Auckland Transport says, “Yes – regular condition surveys and inspections are done which we use to plan maintenance and renewal programmes.” When quizzed on the time taken from receiving a complaint to actioning remedial works, Hannan says “programmes are driven by the condition of the footpath, not

by injury or complaint.” The Times also asked if a person is injured as a result of damaged footpath, does this ‘speed up’ the repair process, Hannan advises “the condition of the footpath drives the timing of works”. Auckland Councils’ budget allocation for maintaining footpaths for 2020 is $19.3 million for footpath replacement this year and have a target of 60km of footpath to be replaced or resurfaced, says Hannan. ➤➤If people spot issues with pavements in their area, Hannan advises them to contact the council call centre on 301 0101 or complete the online feedback form ‘Report a problem’ www.at.govt.nz/ about-us/contact-us/reporta-problem/.

She says she has had to “struggle with pain and (also the) cost of this, as I’ve been told it’s my age (insurance won’t cover on-going costs), and (she’s received) no support for the costs at all from the fall.” Others sent in pictures of cracked or crumbling footpaths in their neighbourhoods. One reader wasn’t happy with the standard of repair job done by council contractor Fulton Hogan, and questioned the materials used. “Fulton Hogan came around to our cul-de-sac, resurfaced the road and repaired selected portions of the pavement just before Christmas. Both jobs are rubbish. The road surface is worse than the original and is already breaking up with lose asphalt all over the place. Sections of the new pavement are already cracking because of the sub-standard concrete used.” He added, “To add insult to injury, they back-filled around the new pavement sections with the gravel/stones they had excavated instead of using new top soil. For this reason grass has not grown in many places and when we mow the lawns, small stones fly everywhere. “They did not replace all the marked sections of pavement, thank goodness, or the street could have been worse. “The contractors also damaged the existing curbing and tried to repair/cover it using their sub-standard concrete.” Another reader drew attention to the “dire state” of the footpath on Howe Street

OUT! Tanks run dry

Not a single face mask available at local pharmacies ■■BY FARIDA MASTER

“People may want 10 boxes but we can’t sell them all to one person. “Most pharmacies are overwhelmed with the demand and we’ve tried to source new suppliers,” some of whom, she admits, have been rather unscrupulous and increased their prices. “But we try to be as fair as possible with our customers,” says Leanne, who finds that it is not only those who are travelling overseas that are in urgent need of face masks and sanitisers but also people sending boxes of face masks back to China and Hong Kong. Unichem Pharmacy in Howick is out of stock till April. A staffer says that fear of coronavirus has triggered a huge demand. “We’ve never seen so many people walk in for face masks. Besides

the program initiated by Watercare. The Times has approached Auckland Council for clarification whether the program is ongoing. Auckland Council’s Head of Water Strategy Andrew Chin is encouraging residents to keep an eye on their rainwater tanks and plan ahead. “We know the summers are getting warmer for longer. Rural dwellers need to be aware and place orders early rather than waiting until their situation is critical and putting tanker deliveries under pressure.” Local Beachlands business Orange Sky (OS) is providing free showers via a mobile van this coming Thursday the February 13, after teaming up with Kiwi laundry on Wakelin Road. The Times contacted four water suppliers and had not heard back by deadline.

Ways to save water:

➤➤Take quicker showers or go swimming. If you belong to a gym, use the facilities there ➤➤If it’s yellow, let it mellow ➤➤If you need to wash your car or boat, use a bucket of water instead of the hose ➤➤Water your garden at night to avoid evaporation. Try and use grey water (from bathroom, laundry, dishes etc)

edical facemasks have sold out in some local retail outlets as fears mount over the spread of the deadly coronavirus that has killed more than 811 people in China and infected 37,198 at the last count. The death toll has surpassed that of the SARS epidemic, which also began in China, killing 774 people worldwide. Local pharmacies are reporting a huge shortage of protective face masks and bottles of hand sanitiser. When the Times contacted pharmacies in Howick and Botany areas, there was not a single respiratory mask available. Local pharmacies say they’ve exhausted all their sources and don’t know when their next consignment will arrive. Leanne Steele of Life Pharmacy on Picton Street says all filtering face masks are sold out. “Most people are looking for N95 face masks and they are longgone. We are waiting for more stock but they go before we can even stock the shelves. “A lot of people have placed orders, and we are now are rationing the pre-orders, restricting it to one or two boxes per head, max.

it is not something we keep huge stock of. “We don’t have any left though we’ve got two big sanitiser bottles left. “We’ve heard that someone in North Shore is trying to manufacture them so that we can source them locally, but we don’t know much about it right now,” she says. A newspaper report says that Unichem pharmacies throughout New Zealand have completely run out of stock for face masks as the public prepares for the coronavirus potentially reaching our shores. The Natural Health Co at Central Terrace, Howick, admits that though they don’t really stock medical face masks, they did try to source them, mainly due to the increasing demand but none of the suppliers had any left. “They are not available anywhere,” they say. The Chemist Warehouse in Botany says they are completely out of stock and don’t have a single protective face mask or hand sanitiser in stock. A staffer reveals that all their pharmacies have run out of them. The Dannemora Pharmacy at Redcastle Drive says that the suppliers have also run out of stock which means they don’t know if they will be restocking on face masks or sanitisers anytime soon.

Tank water owners are under the pump as the ongoing drought has seen many run dry. The warm, dry conditions to start the year have placed considerable strain on people operating off tank water in eastern areas. Wait times for delivery of water via various providers are spiralling out to as much as six weeks, with supply companies struggling to meet demand. Local Beachlands resident Heather (who asked not use her surname) says her twin 13,000 litre tanks are “just below half” and she is being parsimonious with her usage whist trying to find out wait times for water delivery from various tanker operators. She has noticed “a definite increase in water tankers up and down my road” over the past few weeks. Auckland Council has recognised that for many in the east, water is not a given as it is for those ratepayers on mains. “While it is the responsibility of property owners to ensure their private rainwater tanks have sufficient water levels to meet their needs, we are aware long waits for tankers is causing concern for some rural communities, say Deputy Mayor Bill Cashmore. “Council recognises those concerns and together with Watercare, is able to provide an interim solution for a potable water supply to households in those areas running out of tank water.” Auckland Council is opening selected community venues in affected areas to residents to fill a container of drinking water; there is a limit of 20 litres per person per day for essential domestic use to help get through until water deliveries can be made. Residents will need to provide their own containers. Beachlands’ Te Puru Community Centre on Saturday provided toilets, showers & outside taps, as part of

Putting a permanent smile on people’s faces Pro Tips

For someone who fainted at the sight of blood as a dental assistant at 16 years old, Ugie has come a long way.

was an awful feeling as they didn’t even work properly. When I returned to NZ I was referred to Ugie at Niche Mae Salvador Denture Centre by my sister-in-law and now I can smile confidently. In fact I feel like smiling all the time. Thank you Ugie for my beautiful smile.”

Her reputation as one of the top clinical dental technicians in Auckland and other parts of New Zealand precedes her. It was her love of aesthetics that led Ugie Moodley to put a permanent smile on people’s faces. You know you are in great hands as you hear Ms Moodley talk passionately about state-ofthe-art technology she uses to create a smile from prostheses the size of a little finger to that replacing all the teeth. “It is a blessing to be privy to all the new technology as it updates. Each course attended allows us to actually work with new materials and techniques, which makes being a clinical dental technician at this time very exciting and rewarding” she says, keeping herself updated by regularly attending workshops and courses. Most partial dentures have anchors called clasps which are used to retain the denture in your mouth. These can sometimes show and ruin a beautiful smile. “Now we are equipped with technology to resolve this. There are so many combinations that are now available that is hardly

ever the same for each patient. If light metal frameworks have to be used you can be rest assured that they are nickel and beryllium free” she says. With more than 20 years of creating dentures it is no wonder Ugie has clients locally and around the world that sing her praises. Mae Salvador says “for me a smile is the prettiest thing a lady can wear. But I didn’t always feel that way. I had my previous set of dentures made overseas and I was embarrassed to smile. It

Pamela Harrison says “I am very happy with the service Pamela Harrison I received. I got exactly what I needed with great respect and friendliness. The best dental practice yet.” Niche Denture Centre has its own onsite laboratory which means you don’t have to wait a week sometimes more for a repair or a reline. These can be taken care of onsite, helping you back into your smile almost immediately. Niche Denture Centre is situated conveniently on ground level with ample parking right outside the building and easy to access even for clients on wheelchairs.

If the corners of your mouth are red and irritated, you may have a condition called Angular Cheilitis. This can be treated with a topical antifungal ointment but if the condition reappears it may be caused by the reduced vertical dimension of your dentures. Your dentures need to be checked on a regular basis, once or twice every 2 years. It is like WOF for your car only your dentures become a part of you and have to function far greater feats than your car.

ART

Artist seeks inspiration from scaling mountains ■■BY FARIDA MASTER

D

ean Buchanan says he could feel the mountains calling. Scaling mountains inspired the internationally known artist to look at art with greater confidence. Talking to a group of artists and art connoisseurs at the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery in Flat Bush where his vibrant canvasses have been exhibited, the 60-year-old artist poked fun at what he calls the pretentious art mafia. In comparison, he says the people he met whilst climbing Mount Cook were all connected to nature and art. “They expressed raw emotions that are real and honest; just like the coarseness and the texture you see reflected in my paintings – which is different from the art snobs I’ve met over the years,” says the landscape and abstract artist. “Before you climb a mountain you are overcome with a big fear of the unknown, of what lies ahead. Then, once you reach the peak after surviving the exertion, it is a huge release!

“To be an artist, it is important to look within you,” says the award-winning artist. Buchanan, who now lives in Karekare on 10 acres of land overlooking the ocean, has his studio nestled in the bush. After the physical challenge of scaling Mount Cook, he was thrilled to discover the brilliant greens and colours of the flowers in the valley below. “The colours look much sharper and you appreciate it even more.” Drawing a parallel between mountaineering and art, Buchanan – who makes his own charcoal sticks – says he approaches his artwork with confidence, just like he does the mountains, without any self-doubt. “I wouldn’t paint like this if it weren’t for the mountains,” he says. “I have a click vision. I paint after downloading from myself. Unlike some other artists, I don’t paint from photographs. Besides, there should always be an end in sight. You should know when to finish a painting.” He admits to giving up alcohol at

ALERT

New year, old scams

P

olice are reminding New Zealanders to be extra vigilant when receiving unsolicited phone calls, especially when the caller asks for personal details or money. A number of scams are operating nationwide at any one time and,

while some of the details vary, the general premise is often the same. In one recent case, a man lost $57,000 to a caller claiming to be from Spark. The man was told his internet would be disconnected unless he logged onto his computer and fol-

the age of 46 in order to seek clarity. Tracing his humble beginnings, he says he started painting as a form of escapism from poverty. It soon developed into a passion. “As a child I could feel the poverty at home. Art was a form of escape for me,” says Buchanan, who worked with Auckland Art Gallery as a technician for 13 years. Having been invited to exhibit his paintings at public art galleries in US, Japan and Chile, more recently Buchanan received a call from the Seb’on Museum in Paris asking if they could use one of his paintings of the mythical Whanganui River as a book cover. Interestingly, his own life has been extensively traced in a book titled Wild Beast -the art of Dean Buchanan, by Bob Harvey, former mayor of Waitakere city.

Dean Buchanan addresses a group of artists and art connoisseurs at an art gallery in Flat Bush. Photos supplied

Rounding up the discussion, Abbess Manshin who curates his paintings at the temple, says she’s

lowed their instructions. In another well-tested scam, a woman narrowly escaped losing more than $12,000 after receiving a call about suspicious bank transactions. The woman was told she had been over paid by the bank when it reimbursed her for purchases she hadn’t made. Fortunately, the bank was able to put a stop to the transfer. While it’s a new year, these scams

– and our advice – remains the same: • Never automatically trust someone over the phone or online who you haven’t met in person. • If you are receiving a call from someone purporting to be from a business, ask them for credentials and never hand over personal details such as computer passwords or bank account details. If the caller is legitimate they won’t mind verifying their identify. • If you think a call may be suspi-

cious, hang up immediately and do not engage with the caller. • Look after your personal details in the same way you would your wallet and other possessions. • And remember, if something looks or sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Anyone who believes they are a victim of a scam is advised to contact Police on 105. Further scam prevention advice is available on the NZ Police website.

CAR RALLY

Rotary rally to create goodwill T

hirty two Rotarians who have had a blast criss-crossing the rugged landscape of Nepal and Bhutan are soon going to venture out on a Rotary Car Rally covering the length and breadth of New Zealand. Arriving from India on February 18, the contingent, including Anns and Annetts (wives of Rotarians are addressed as Anns) from 12 Rotary Clubs of Rotary International District 3131, India, hope to promote fellowship and friendship whilst creating awareness about the service organisation which has 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide. The purpose behind the rally is also to meet fellow Rotarians in New Zealand, learn about different service projects, attend Rotary meetings, participate in local community service projects and initiate joint projects. Past District Governor (PDG), India, Dr Philly Karani, also a senior member of the Rotary Club of Somerville, has been co-ordinating the event with a dedicated committee of Rotar-

Rotarians from ages 21-73, who are professionals in different fields (including medicine, business, engineering, hospitality and education), will spend two weeks driving in branded cars with Rotary stickers that create awareness about the various worldwide Rotary projects.

Joshi says, “During the rally we will be promoting the core areas of Rotary that starts with `Rotary connects the world’ as well as focus on world peace, global warming and the worldwide campaign `End Polio Now’ that Rotary has been working on for the last 30 years. “We’ve helped immunise more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. So far, Rotary has contributed

rime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced a funeral service for former Labour Prime Minister Mike Moore whose home was in Maraetai. A public service will be held on Friday, February 14 at 2pm at Dilworth School senior campus, 2 Erin Street, Epsom. “The service will be a celebration of Mike’s life and a chance for his family, friends and members of the public to pay their respects,” Ardern said. “It will be an opportunity to acknowledge Mike’s major contribution through years of public service to New Zealand and New Zealanders, and for his considerable roles in the international arena.” The service is being arranged in coordination with Mr Moore’s widow, Yvonne Moore.

A condolence book is available to the public in the main foyer of Parliament House. Mr Moore, formerly New Zealand’s Ambassador to the United States, had a home at Omana Beach in Maraetai. Moore died on February 2. He was 71. Moore was at his home in Auckland when he died, his wife Yvonne said. Moore suffered a stroke in 2015 when he was New Zealand’s ambassador in Washington DC and had been in declining health in recent years. Mrs Moore said her husband had numerous health issues since his stroke. Ardern said in a statement last week: “My condolences go to Mike’s wife Yvonne and his family. “I feel incredibly lucky to have seen Mike only on Friday. He never lost his inter-

est and passion for politics, because he saw it as such an important vehicle for change. “During Mike’s long parliamentary career he held the positions of Prime Minister, Deputy Minister of Finance, Minister of External Relations and Trade, Minister of Tourism, Sport and Recreation, and he was Minister of Overseas Trade and Marketing. “While Mike made his mark is many ways, one of his enduring legacies to New Zealand is the work he did opening up world trade and gaining access for New Zealand exporters to new markets. That was a legacy he also left for the world. “Through both his lead role in the GATT trade round and in his tenure as Director General of the World Trade Organisation, he dedicated his life to the service of New

The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) that has its roots in war-time England was established on the eve of the World War 11 to help people cope with the dislocation, trauma and complexity that war brings. People could go CAB for help in tracing missing relatives in bombed areas or learn about the new wartime rules and regulations. Closer home, Citizens Advice Bureau PakurangaEastern Manukau has been serving the local communities since 1977. In 2009, they set up CAB at the Botany Town Centre and more recently, have come to the Coast by way of Satellite Bureaus alternating weekly on (first and third) Friday afternoons from 1-3pm between Beachlands Rural Library (second and fourth Friday) and the Maraetai Rural Library. Each CAB is a member of the national body-the Citizens Advice Bureau New Zealand (CABNZ). To be a member of CABNZ, a CAB must meet a set of standards

Each CAB is an incorporated not-for-profit organisation, operated by local volunteers. Each CAB has a board of elected volunteers who plan, govern and promote their CAB. The CAB satellite service in Beachlands and Maraetai that was recently launched had CABNZ chief executive officer Kerry Dalton say, “There is a lovely synergy as the library also serves the community and it is nice to share the space with them.

SPECIALISTS

Your bones are in good hands Motorway traffic queues are fast becoming a distant memory for many patients of Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Gary French thanks to his handy location at Ormiston Hospital. Having moved from his central Auckland location in 2009, Mr French founded his private practice, Ormiston Orthopaedics at the local private hospital without any inkling as to how things would pan out. “We took a punt but it’s worked exceptionally well!” says Mr French. “Patients from south and east Auckland areas were finding it increasingly difficult to get to appointments when I worked in the central city. “Now, getting to and from the hospital is much easier for patients and their friends and family/whanau to visit and offer support – which is so important. “It makes complete sense for people to seek treatment locally if such treatment is available, given the ever-increasing congestion on Auckland’s main transport routes,” says Mr French, himself a south Auckland resident. “I no longer find myself stuck in the car in traffic and it’s so convenient for me to drop in and check on patients either at the weekend or after hours.” He says that the comfortable hospital environment contributes to the patients’ happiness and well-being. “Our patient surveys consistently produce outstanding results and our patients are extremely satisfied. “They say it’s like staying at a hotel, not a hospital!”

What’s more, those with Southern Cross health insurance are finding orthopaedic care a lot more affordable now that Mr French is a Southern Cross Affiliated Provider for primary hip and knee replacement surgery. “Previously, many people with limited cover chose to go on public hospital waiting lists despite having paid insurance premiums.

“Now, getting to and from the hospital is much easier for patients and their friends and family/whanau to visit and offer support – which is so important.” - Mr Gary French, Orthopaedic Surgeon “Now, as an affiliated provider, I can provide certainty of costs involved with hip and knee replacements and, as a result, most Southern Cross members with partial insurance cover now opt to have their surgery in the private sector. “It’s made a huge difference to the patients, and reduces the impact on the

public hospital waiting lists.” Mr French’s practice at Ormiston Orthopaedics is largely focused on hip and knee joint replacement surgery, both primary and revision. He also performs knee arthroscopy, knee ligament reconstruction and other general orthopaedic procedures. He spent 18 years at Counties Manukau DHB treating bone and soft tissue cancer patients and retired from this part of his practice in December 2011. After more than 25 years in orthopaedics, the dedicated surgeon is highly respected in his field. Local GPs constantly refer patients to his services and the hospital is wellequipped to handle the demand. “We have plenty of back up facilities. The hospital has visiting cardiologists and a range of skilled surgical specialists, as well as excellent x-ray, MRI, and ultrasound services. “The specialists all work together at Ormiston with the patient as their primary focus.” Although Mr French has ceased his work in the public sector, this means he has more time to focus on his patients and ensure they receive the best care possible. e all love a good ghost story, but what does it take to turn curiosity into a hobby? Thirty-seven-year old Pakuranga native Sam Collier looks outside the realms of possibility and takes an open-minded holistic approach to investigating the paranormal. The self-proclaimed huge Ghostbusters fan who grew up watching the X Files is not someone who blindly follows the hype promoted by ghost-hunting TV shows, where participants have been known to fake poltergeist activities and are encouraged to ham things up for the cameras. Sam, who has a life-long interest in getting to the bottom of claims of paranormal phenomena, joined investigative group Haunted Auckland in 2013. The team has been around since 2006 founded by respected ghost researcher Mark Wallbank. The group has conducted more than 200 site visits to allegedly haunted locations including Puhinui House located within the

Howick Historical Village. In a 2016 solo investigation by Wallbank, a torch that was mounted on a chair atop the stairs from the ground level inexplicably fell under its own volition. The footage is available to view on hauntedauckland.com Collier is well-versed in the use of the tools of the trade. Investigators kit themselves up with video cameras, EMF detectors, EDI meters and a good deal of common sense. When asked for his theory on what he thinks ghosts could be, he favours the idea that people

are witnessing “what’s left over of what was once living”, where the events, people and their associated energies are left imprinted on the environment. For the sceptics who question this theory and ask Collier questions like “why there are no Ghost dinosaurs?”, he answers that he believes the ‘ghost’ returns to a “particular time and place due to an emotional attachment”. For now, Sam and the team at hauntedauckland.com will keep putting in the late shifts at a haunted location near you. The truth is out there-maybe.

OPINION

Responding faster to electrical emergencies could save lives Recently I announced that I will be lodging a new bill in Parliament which will make a common-sense change to our transport legislation to allow vehicles responding to electrical emergencies to respond faster. In Auckland an accident involving a car driving into a power pole happens every day on average. These accidents can be very serious if, for example, the power lines come down on the car. In cases like these often the driver and any passengers are trapped in the vehicle and unable to be assisted by emergency personnel until the power is turned off. Under our current land transport rules, emergency response vehicles such as the ambulance or the fire brigade can use lights and sirens to move through traffic and respond quickly to this

accident, however they are not equipped or qualified to switch off the power and therefore cannot help get the people out of the vehicle until someone from a lines company attends the scene. Meanwhile the lines company which is responding is often stuck in traffic somewhere in Auckland and often this traffic has been worsened by the accident itself. Another example which would justify the use of these emergency lights would be a situation in which there is someone medically dependent on power and there is a power outage. The response time in getting the power back on is critical. My Bill will simply make it easier for lines companies to respond faster by giving their vehicles the power to be able to display a flashing light and to require other

traffic to give way. With congestion a major issue in our big cities, this Bill will help make a difference not only to those directly impacted in the examples above, meaning faster response times, and potentially life being saved in the cases of a serious accident or a medical need. It will also give lines company staff the ability to do their job faster in times of need rather than being stressed out in traffic. ➤➤If you have any feedback on this Bill, please feel free to contact me - Simeon.Brown@ Parliament.Govt.nz Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga

Your view Banking rights

Recently, to their dismay, the bank account of a person close to me was closed, while they were traveling, by one of the Big 4 banks. Other people have had accounts closed by banks, and financial institutions, who disagree with their customers political or even moral behaviour (e.g. tattoo artists and consenting sex workers). Last month, Kiwibank announced that they would no longer be operating chequing accounts – one could argue that the convenience of cheques is ‘a cost of doing business’ for the banking industry – a ‘customer service’. Banking’s origins lie in promissory notes. In 2019, I participated in a Reserve Bank of NZ survey concerning the future of cash in NZ and received interesting feedback in December. This feedback reflected Australian banks’ efforts to dispose of, or reduce, the use of cash. The claim is that this is of legal or tax value to society – claims which are overblown. In 2019 (Stuff, February 4, 2019) a damning Royal Commission’s report found most major banks in Australia, many which own NZ banks, to be negligent and exploitative of their customers. The result of banks’ successful lobbying for a cashless society would be that every transaction passes through a financial institution. It is all recorded, and they make an additional margin on everything – which we pay for. Cash is vital as practical relief from administrative error or commercial or government financial persecution.

As a bank account is essential in today’s personal and business environment, it should have the legal standing of a human right. Dr Mike Schmidt, Pakuranga

We need balance with nature

T

he Elim building extension is a real eyesore and degrades the environment. Could they not have left some of these mature trees, especially around the perimeter? Must every new building site be a wall to wall development, taking out all vegetation with no consideration for bird life amongst other concerns and shade for their students. Over the last decade east Auckland has lost a lot of trees, much of which has been unnecessary. Our green lungs are disappearing and the unitary plan unrelentingly gathers apace. New developments are three stories high which adversely affect neighbouring properties and the density of units will make traffic a nightmare, not to mention the strain on resources such as water. The need to sacrifice native forest to enlarge water supply in Waitakere shows that Auckland’s growth is environmentally unsustainable. Another eyesore is the Panmure Basin development for new bus lanes: will the usage justify this? New developments should strike a better balance with the environment and the building footprint should be limited to 70 per cent to limit water run-off. Every effort should be made to save our trees with climate change

Plastics and our responsibility It is safe to say that one of the serious challenges we face world-wide is not climate warming but rather plastic spawning. This is a man-made dilemma, one that has grown exponentially but one that we can do something about unlike climate-warming which is an incomplete science and is cosmic in its roots. Plastic use and its disposal is a human-generated issue. Our delicate foods are wrapped in plastic; our trinkets, toys, tools, cell phones and cars all have plastic components. It is everywhere - in the oceans, in the food chain and there is a large chance of it being absorbed in our bodies. Safe disposal has been a constant talkfest of councils and gov-

ernments for years but the serious action lies with the consumer. Alternative wrappings like brown paper, wax paper, cardboard and hemp products, these are the ones to be looking for at the food markets and commercial stores. We can do a lot to encourage change by the very choices we make. Ian George, Howick

Coronavirus hysteria irksome The coronavirus has put the entire world into panic mode and the Chinese are the sad victims of what seems to me a targeted campaign against them as well as the country called China. The WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak in China as a public health emergency of international concern. Was there such a flurry with the outbreak of swine flu, bird flu, measles, ebola, etc? I am so ashamed that the NZ

KOLEOS

government joined the crowds in this anti-ChinaChinese campaign by closing our borders to ‘foreign’ travellers coming from China. What does the word ‘foreign’ cover? A definition for the Chinese or does it include other ethnicities and races? Information on the outbreak of the coronavirus stated that this is a completely new virus, hence no known medical treatment is available, putting people into panic mode, with long queues outside stores that sells face masks and hand sanitisers. However, a disinfectant product Lysol, known since 1889 and made in the west, has it listed on the back of the spray can, all the bacteria and viruses this Lysol product is 99.9 per cent effective against and one of the viruses listed there is the ‘Human coronavirus’. Why was this product never offered to offset the international concern and save the lives of those who died? If I were the manufacturer of this Lysol product, I would have no hesitation to offer it to the world to clean up the mess and have a clean healthy atmosphere to live in. I now know that even the WHO is in this campaign against China. It was interesting also to read from www.businessinsider. com/military-government-chemical-weapons-2016-9. This time, could China and the Chinese people have been used as the guinea pigs – 10 to 15 million people in Wuhan – to eliminate them. With the recent focus on the historical Jewish holocaust, will the world see a repeat, this time known as the Chinese holocaust? Margaret Scott, Pakuranga

Swapping suits for sneakers I

t’s time to dig out your running gear and swap your dress shoes for sneakers because the Highbrook Fun Run and Walk sponsored by Goodman is back. Last year, more than 600 people took to the park for the annual event which is organised by the Highbrook Rotary Club. With a choice of distances available for both individuals and teams, there’s something for everyone. There is now an added 1km walk option for those who would like to participate but can’t manage the bigger distances. Entrants can choose to go it alone or in teams of four in a 5km walk, 5km run or 10km run on a stunning course beginning in Highbrook Park which is located at the end of Pukekiwiriki Place, off Kerwyn Avenue. The event, now in its seventh year, draws hundreds of people from the surrounding businesses every year as they vie to claim the title of 2020 champion – all the while raising funds for a good cause. While it’s aimed at businesses in the area, not working in Highbrook isn’t a

valid excuse. The event is open to everyone with entries just $25 per person. All proceeds from the event are put to good use in the community, with funds going towards educational projects in conjunction with Middlemore Foundation, other local charities and Rotary youth programmes. Last year’s event raised a whopping $22,000 through participants and sponsors, with a range of charities benefiting. Held straight after work, the Fun Run and Walk is a great alternative to those standard after-work drinks – in fact, why not do both? After the exercise is done, hang around and recover with your team over a couple of drinks and a BBQ while enjoying the live entertainment on offer. HALF MARATHON Page 7

RUGBY

Gatland’s Chiefs made of right stuff C

oach Warren Gatland would have relished his Chiefs 25-15 Super Rugby win against Scott Robertson’s champion Crusaders in Hamilton on Saturday night. It proved his gutsy team is made of the right stuff and that the Crusaders, for all their depth, are not as good as they were before they lost several All Blacks after last year’s World Cup. Still full credit to the Chiefs who have relished the return of former Wales and British and Irish Lions coach Gatland and tactical genius Aaron Cruden from his stint in France. Add to that the daredevil brilliance of speedy fullback Damian McKenzie after a long spell recuperating from knee surgery although I do wish he’d shy clear of the gorillas when it comes to a bit of biff and bash. Throw in second-five Anton Lienert-Brown, halfback Brad Webber and wings Solomon Alaimalo and Sean Wainui and the Chiefs have a back-

line capable of stinging anyone. However it has been the loose forward combination of Lachlan Boshier, Sam Cane and Mitch Karpic that has impressed most as they forage for the ball and make their tackles in come-frombehind wins against the Blues and Crusaders. In the tradition of Richie McCaw, Boshier made a remarkable five turnovers against the Crusaders team once renowned for their ability to pilfer the ball when Matt Todd and Kieran Read reigned supreme. Meanwhile the Blues have unearthed an exciting wing in powerful Mark Telea who scored a hat-trick in their welldeserved 32-12 win against the Waratahs in Sydney. Pacey centre Joe Marchant also ran a lovely line to score one that suggests the English international has much to offer his adopted team. For the second week in a row hard-running No 8 Hoskins Sotutu showed he deserved his start ahead of

gifted Akira Ioane who will be champing at the bit to get more game time. A great run and pass from Ngani Laumape for a Jamie Booth try clinched the Hurricanes a 26-23 win against the tiring Jaguares which represented a big improvement on the hiding they received from the Stormers in week one. Having beaten the Bulls 13-0, the Stormers sit top of the table on nine points, one ahead of the Chiefs, Brumbies and Sharks who are also unbeaten. Having scored five tries in trouncing the Highlanders 42-20 in Dunedin, the Sharks look especially dangerous with speedy fullback Aphelele Fassi and wing Makazole Mapimpi each bagging two tries. Fears that South Africa will join the Six Nations championships and leave the Rugby Championship in the lurch don’t hold substance with new New Zealand Rugby chief executive Mark Robinson who points to a

strong relationship and trust between the two countries. According to the Daily Mail the Springboks will quit the Rugby Championship in 2024 after the next World Cup. It is not the first time a British newspaper has deemed fiction more interesting than fact.

Guptill and Henry Nicholls open in such a positive way and have Ross Taylor and Tom Latham perform at their best to give the Black Caps an unassailable 2-0 ODI lead against India.

However the two-hour trip to Britain should appeal to South Africa, not to mention a great deal more money to be made by playing where population dwarfs that of New Zealand, Australia and Argentina. Meanwhile it’s been wonderful to see cricketers Martin
