he replica of the Endeavour sailed into Maraetai On Tuesday as part of the Tuia250 commemorations which mark 250 years since the arrival to New Zealand of Captain James Cook and the Endeavour in 1769. Accompanied by the Spirit of New Zealand and other vessels, the flotilla landed on the beach at Magazine Bay, adjacent to Umupuia Marae. Due to channel restrictions the tall ships dropped anchor about 1km offshore. Beachlands local Steve Lucas has sailed on the leg from Gisborne to Maraetai, where the Endeavour replica is now moored. This Labour Weekend there will be open vessel days for the Tuia 250 Flotilla, entertainment, kai and fireworks on the Auckland waterfront. Arriving into the Waitemata Harbour will be the Tuia 250 Voyage flotilla of six vessels: two waka hourua (double-hulled canoes), a va’a moana from Tahiti and three tall ships. There will be a haka powhiri at Eastern Viaduct, 2pm, apart from a line-up of commemorative free events at the Auckland Viaduct throughout Labour Weekend. It is a free event. Go to ourauckland.nz/ tuia250 for more event details and updates. The Vector Lights for Tuia 250 show commences at 8pm, running every half hour until midnight across four nights (October 24-27). Vector Lights on Auckland Harbour Bridge will shine in tribute to those waka and vessels that make up the Tuia 250 Voyage flotilla. The light show represents stories that relate to navigation and the arrival of waka and vessels of all kinds in Aotearoa. The portrayal of waka arriving is a symbolic way to connect the heritage of New Zealanders whose ancestors arrived into Aotearoa aboard a waka of some kind.

merican playwright Ken Ludwig has written around 30 highly successful plays – among them The Beaux Stratagem, Lend Me a Tenor, and Shakespeare in Hollywood. In this one, set in 1936, he chooses to spoof the great Sherlock Holmes. Broadway star William Gillette, famous for his leading role as the fictional detective, has invited fellow cast members to his Connecticut home for a weekend of Christmas revelry. But when one of the guests is stabbed to death, he assumes the persona of his beloved Holmes to track down the killer before the next victim appears. OPINION

Legalising weed the wrong move Jami-Lee’s JOTTINGS

When voters go to the polls at next year’s General Election, they won’t With Jami-Lee Ross just be asked who they think will be their best champion on the ground in their patch. They will also be asked whether or not the recreational use of cannabis should be legalised. I favour the use of medicinal cannabis where appropriate but based on the current available evidence, I oppose legalising the recreational use of cannabis. This is also what I hear regularly when I talk to locals every week at their homes. The various arguments in favour of legalisation include that it will reduce the power and wealth of criminal gangs and that legal cannabis products sold to the public will be regulated and therefore less powerful and harmful. However, if cannabis is legalised, gangs that deal in it will simply move on to something else, such as cocaine or methamphetamine, so their power and wealth will not be impacted. If legal and regulated cannabis products aren’t delivering the high that consumers want, users will go to blackmarket dealers to obtain products that will. The arguments against the legalisation of recreational cannabis use are compelling. Legalising cannabis will make it more available to more people and it will also send the dangerous message that it’s just another product to be consumed. A landmark New Zealand health and development study quoted in the NZ Medical Journal earlier this year found cannabis use associated with major depression, educational delay, welfare dependency, as well as increased risks of motor vehicle accidents, tobacco use, psychotic symptoms and other illicit drug use. I am currently running an electorate survey in Botany. While it is early days, people saying they oppose the legalisation of recreational use of cannabis are leading by a ratio of 15 to 1. Legalising the recreational use of cannabis will not help to address New Zealand’s mental health crisis or prevent vulnerable young people from making the mistake of becoming a regular user of such drugs. Governments rightly have the power to prohibit the public sale and use of products that would cause harm to society. This is one such instance where a product that is already illegal should stay illegal.

DEVELOPMENT

ork has begun on a new medical centre at Ormiston Town Centre. Developer Todd Property has broken ground on a 3000 sqm, three-level medical centre at 211 Ormiston Road. Todd Property has an agreement with joint venture partners East Care Group and East Health Services who plan to occupy the building with a super clinic to meet the needs of the growing community. It will include a full range of specialist health care services under a single roof. East Care CEO Gordon Armstrong says the centre will be an integrated health centre offering a range of high quality primary medical services for the growing population. “The significant growth of Ormiston makes adequate and high-quality health care a priority, which we will provide through a range of services including general practice, opthalmology, dental, radiology, pharmacy and physio, says Armstrong. “We still have two tenancies available, so encourage any complementary businesses to get in touch with us to discuss the opportunity. East Care’s current portfolio includes East Care Urgent Care

Clinic, which offers 24-hour urgent and after-hours care, and Ormiston Specialist Centre. East Health Services and East Care jointly own three additional medical centres in the local community -Botany Junction Medical, Highgate Surgery and Summerville Surgery. A fourth, Highbrook Medical, opens in April 2020. East Health Services also has a part ownership in a fifth, Beachlands Medical Centre. Todd Property expects the main building work on Ormiston Medical Centre to be complete by May 2020, followed

by a six-month fitout by East Care, who plan to open the premises towards the end of 2020. Todd Property is working in partnership with Auckland Council’s redevelopment agency Panuku Development Auckland to develop the Ormiston town centre. Ormiston is an active and growing community with over two thirds of the land area in the town centre project developed and more than 200 new homes built or under construction. Around two thirds of the overall Ormiston development

has either been completed or is underway, including the 40,000sqm town centre. Due for completion late 2020, Ormiston Town Centre will include about 100 retail and commercial tenants, a three-level parking structure and four major anchor tenants: Noel Leeming, The Warehouse, an 8-screen HOYTS complex, New World alongside the existing Pak’nSave. MP delivers petition to remove T2 Lane

Students of Pigeon Mountain School take a break after a 2.2km dash to Victoria Park alongside hundreds of other young participants. Photo supplied

MARATHON

School kids cover the distance at marathon A

fter collectively covering the equivalent of the 1600km length of New Zealand in training since April, 38 Pigeon Mountain Primary School runners headed to central Auckland on Sunday to complete their 2019 Auckland Kids Marathon. Weekly after-school runs meant the

children were well prepared for their final challenge a 2.2km run to Victoria Park alongside hundreds of other young participants. Principal Ian Dickinson says he is very proud of the runners and the resilience they showed in training. “The children never miss a training

run, often braving wintry weather after busy days at school,” he says. “This is the third Pigeon Mountain group to complete the event, and we hope this inspires a love of running it would be great to see these children continuing to run and perhaps compete in the full event as adults.”

Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown has delivered a petition of 1553 signatures to Auckland Transport calling on AT to remove the T2 Lane from Pakuranga Road. The petition wants AT to focus their time and resources on the completion of the Eastern Busway and Reeves Road Flyover. ”When AT first proposed the idea of a T2 Lane on Pakuranga Road at the beginning of this year, the local community expressed their concern that such a move would actually make things worse for the majority of commuters in our area,” says Brown. ”As the local MP I hosted a public meeting in February where around 200 locals turned up to express this view and offer their suggestions on how the lane could be improved to ensure it was actually effective. ”Despite the community’s experience with their own main thoroughfare, AT decided to go ahead with its poorly thought out plan that failed to take stock of certain aspects of how Pakuranga Road works.” Brown says this included problems like the 50m clearance the T2 Lane would impose upon motorists wanting to turn into Gossamer Drive from Pakuranga Road, when previously they could safely switch lanes, and concerns with how traffic joining Pakuranga Road from main feeder streets like Cascades Road

would fare. ”When the T2 Lane was installed at the beginning of June it became quite clear early on that AT had failed in its objectives and had simply made the journey worse for motorists, without any significant benefit for those using public transport,” he says. ”This is what projects like the Eastern Busway are designed to solve, by making public transport more reliable and convenient for Pakuranga but until it’s ready, there is simply no point in implementing half-baked ideas like this T2 Lane. ”Our congestion issues are made even worse by the fact that another key piece of the overall AMETI project, the Reeves Road Flyover was recently delayed. The AMETI project , he says, was designed to be staged, with the Reeves Road Flyover to be built prior to the Botany to Pakuranga stage of the Busway. This work will now take place together, meaning more congestion for Pakuranga motorists. ”As a result, my petition not only calls for the removal of the T2 Lane but urges AT to start construction on the Reeves Road Flyover as soon as possible and stop the continued delays. Pakuranga has waited over a decade for this project and now that the Eastern Busway is finally underway, we cannot afford to see the rest of it pushed back”,says Brown.

EDUCATION

Local schools on a cultural exchange to China S

tudents from four local schools are returning to normality after a oncein-a-lifetime trip to visit sister schools in China at the end of Term 3. Twenty-seven pupils from Pigeon Mountain Primary, Wakaaranga, Hingaia Peninsula and Bucklands Beach Intermediate participated in the educational and cultural exchange, travelling to Ningbo, South Shanghai in Eastern China. “Auckland has a longstanding connection to the city of Ningbo, having established a sister-city relationship in 1998. Schools in the two cities have been working together since 2013 as part of an education association. These visits are an extension of this cooperation, and provide students and teachers with the opportunity to learn alongside one another and share in cultural experiences,” says Ian Dickinson, principal of Pigeon Mountain Primary School who accompanied the students, along with three other principals and four teachers from the other schools in the travelling party. “The students on the visit were wonderful ambas-

sadors for their respective schools and demonstrated the values and behaviours we were hoping to see from them. They formed some wonderful relationships with their home stay families, and embraced all that the visit had to offer,” says Ian.

OUR HOMES TODAY

Auckland dwelling consents continue to climb Annual dwelling consents in Auckland hit an all-time record of 14,345 in the year to August 2019. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says the figures show the progress that is being made in housing in Auckland. “Just seven years ago we were only issuing about 3600 consents a year — we’ve issued more than 4000 in the last three months,” he said. In August 2019, 1407 dwelling consents were issued, taking the total for the past 12 months to 14,345. In addition to the record numbers of dwelling consents, a total of 1244 dwellings were ‘completed’ during August, by having a Code Compliance Certificate issued. This takes the total number of dwellings completed this year to 10,979. “Building new houses in Auckland remains a priority as we continue to deal with the pressures of housing growth and unaffordability, but these figures show that we are addressing the shortfall,” said Goff. “It’s also encouraging to see that Auckland is becoming a more compact city, as the Unitary Plan intended. Sixty per cent of the consents issued in August were for apartments or other attached housing types such as townhouses and unit. “Over the past 12 months, 94 per cent of new dwellings consented have been inside the Rural Urban Boundary — Auckland is growing up instead of just out,” he said.

Sales volumes stable, average values rising T

he New Zealand property market is ticking over, with sales volumes relatively stable and average values rising in a controlled fashion, according to Kelvin Davidson, CoreLogic senior property economist, “There doesn’t seem to be anything too major in the pipeline that would throw this steadiness off course, but there are some important milestones to watch out for in the final few months of the year including another potential cut to the official cash rate (OCR), a possible loosening of the loan to value ratio (LVR) speed limits and the final decision on bank capital requirements,” said Davidson. “In the macro economy, the news remains supportive for the property market.” GDP growth is set to stay above 2 per cent annually, fulltime employment is still rising, and the unemployment rate is very low. “Net migration is still high too, which is another support for property demand,” he said. “In addition, lending conditions have, if anything, eased a bit in the past few months – most importantly, the banks have become less strict on

their internal serviceability testing.” The CoreLogic Buyer Classification series shows that mortgaged multiple property owners (MPOs or investors) have bounced back in terms of their share of purchases over the past two to three months. “In turn, smaller players (mums and dads) have played a key role in this rebound,” Davidson said. “The scrapping of the capital gains tax proposals seems to have bolstered investors’ confidence, while the low and falling returns on other assets

(e.g. term deposits) will have also played a role. We may now be seeing the purple patch for first home buyers become a purple patch for investors – although they don’t have it all their own way.” First home buyers still have a strong presence in many parts of the country, he said. In terms of property values, the national average now stands at more than $691,000, up by 2.4 per cent from the same time a year ago. Amongst the main centres, Dunedin is still recording strong increases (12.8 per cent

in the year to September), but Auckland and Christchurch are softer, and Wellington City has also cooled off in the past few months. “Values in regional markets are generally still rising steadily, although the pace of growth has peaked,” Davidson said. Overall, it appears that market activity levels have found a floor and sales volumes should start to improve over the coming months and into 2020. “Against that backdrop, property value growth across New Zealand as a whole is likely to stay slow and steady. Davidson said. “One key unknown for 2020 and the following years is the Reserve Bank of NZ’s decision around banks needing to hold extra capital on their balance sheets. “A final decision is due by early December with the effect on mortgage availability and/ or interest rates tricky to predict. “Many borrowers have only ever known falling rates, so any sort of rise as a result of the potential new rules could take a bit to get used to, and may be a challenge for some households’ finances.”

Great turnout for hot rod show S

outhside Streeter’s Hot Rod held recently was a great success. It’s been seven years since the club, established in Howick 48 years ago, last put on a car show. Show director Ian Neary said the club was very happy with the turnout with 20 per cent more people visiting than was budgeted for, with around 2000 people visiting. “We had 32 cars in the show inside and a rolling car show outside with between 20 and 30 cars,” Neary said. “The club was very happy to be supporting a charity in our local community and donated $5000 to St John.” The winners of the show sponsored by Ditron Precision Engineering were: ➤➤People’s Choice, Llew Picton, 69 Chev Camaro; Sponsors Choice, Neil Baker, 28 Ford Roadster; St Johns Choice, Sean Williams, 33 Ford Roadster.

Spring clean your car It’s the season of rebirth and regeneration. It’s also a good time to check out your car and get it ready for summer. Your car has probably suffered more than most over the colder months and chances are you will soon be packing it up and heading for the beach.

So here are a few tips to get it ready Clean it Simple but effective. Give your car a good clean inside and out especially if you live in a part of New Zealand that had a cold, damp winter, (which is pretty much everywhere). Outside your car could be caked in mud or salt if you live in a part where it snows. Inside it has had wet clothes and muddy feet all over it. Clean it out and give it a good airing.

Keep cool It’s going to get hot and if you are joining the great

Christmas exodus to the beach you are likely to hit traffic at some point. To avoid your engine overheating check your cooling system for leaks and make sure hoses are secure and in good condition. It’s a good idea to drain, flush and refill the coolant system every two years.

EXPERT SERVICE AIR CONDITIONING FOR YOUR CAR – ALL WORK GUARANTEED COME IN NOW FOR A FREE AIR-CONDITIONING CHECK: PH 274 4609

COOLCAR AIR-CONDITIONING CENTRE

Engine oil You should check the engine oil level regularly but this time make sure there are no leaks. If you haven’t already done it this year then get the oil and oil filter changed.

Check your belts Cambelt and fanbelt failure is not cheap to sort out, so it is worth checking these in your spring clean. Most Japanese vehicle cambelts should be changed at 100,000 kms or every five years. Many European vehicles have change times between 40,000 and 60,000 kms. It should tell you under the bonnet when it was last checked.

Engine spark Another thing worth checking is your spark plugs. Worn spark plugs can lead to engine misfiring and the eventual breakdown

of the high tension leads - so check and replace if necessary.

Tyres should be checked regularly and not just at WOF time. Check the tread and tyre pressure are both correct. Make sure you check the spare tyre if your car has one as well. Have tyres checked for excessive or unusual wear patterns and for any lumps or tread distortion. As tyres roll along the road they generate heat, especially on hot days. If tyre pressures are low, the combination of heat and excessive movement of the tyre sidewall can lead to a blow-out. Source: www.aa.co.nz

English rose aims to prick All Blacks pride

Gymnast makes NZ squad Thirteen-year-old local gymnast Bethany Hyde has made the New Zealand gymnastics team. The Bucklands Beach Intermediate School student — and former Maraetai Beach School student – will be representing New Zealand for the first time internationally at the Steps Tour in Hawaii next year. Bethany started gymnastics when she was 7-yearsold. Her mum Kirsten said Bethany was a little uncoordinated and would trip over herself running down the corridor. “I thought it would be great to help her balance. She now does back tucks on a beam, her balance is amazing, but she is still the kid that can trip over herself running down a corridor.” Bethany is so dedicated to her sport, training at Eastern Suburbs Gymnastics Club in Glen Innes over 20 hours a week. Her passion and work ethic allow her to still manage to find time to balance school,

When most people will be relaxing and enjoying some time off over Christmas, Bethany will be training hard getting ready to leave for Hawaii at the beginning of January. “With gymnastics being entirely self-funded, Bethany would welcome any sponsors to aid with her continued growth as a New Zealand athlete,” Kirsten said. ➤➤A Givealittle page has been set up to raise funds for Bethany’s trip www.givealittle.co.nz/ cause/representing-nzat-the-gymnastics-2020hawaii-tour.

Both rivals were in devastating quarterfinals form last weekend with England’s confidence soaring upon overwhelming Australia 40-16 before the All Blacks blitzed Ireland 46-14. Under coach Eddie Jones, England are no longer a boring one-dimensional team who rely on forward power to allow their halves to play a kicking territorial game, Their tight forwards are stronger than ever and loosies Billy Vunipola, Sam Underhill and Tom Curry have the speed, skill and strength to severely test the in-form Kieran Read, Sam Cane and Ardie Savea. While kicking does play a huge part in the role of halves Ben Youngs and Owen Farrell, captain Farrell is also capable of igniting his backline with sweetly timed passes to jug-

gernaut second-five Manu Tuilagi who takes some stopping. In Johnny May and Anthony Watson, they have two fast, try-scoring wings just as New Zealand does with unpredictable crackerjack Sevu Reece and George Bridge. To summarise, the English rose has sharp thorns intent on wounding the All Blacks in much the same way as a Trojan arrow struck Greek hero Achilles’ heel. They should not be underestimated, especially if it turns out to be a tightly fought contest where Farrell’s superior goal-kicking boot could counter balance the All Blacks greater flair. One of the greatest gifts of athletics guru Arthur Lydiard beyond instilling confidence in champion runners like Peter Snell and Murray Halberg, was his ability to peak them at the right time. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has the same knack, though he justifiably seeks to share the kudos with fellow coaches Ian Foster, Mike Cron

and Scott McLeod. Just as an injury ridden Dan Carter peaked at the 2015 World Cup where he was named player of the tournament, so too has skipper Kieran Read after having undergone back surgery last year. Joe Moody had his best game against Ireland and it was particularly pleasing to see Brodie Retallick, Jack Goodhue and replacement Sonny Bill Williams perform so well after long injury breaks. Meanwhile sprightly halfback Aaron Smith had his best game of the year, scored the first two tries and combined sweetly with Richie Mo’unga who varied his play cleverly. Brilliant Beauden Barrett won man of the match honours for the second time in this tournament and made 21 carries to pass the previous World Cup record of 20 shared by John Kirwan and Buck Shelford in 1987. Especially pleasing was the binding and low body position of the lively forwards against a famed, experienced

Irish pack who began to show their age. Meanwhile having conquered brave Japan 26-3, South Africa should account for a Welsh team that scraped home 20-19 against 14-man France after lock Sébastien Vahaamahina was red-carded in the 49th minute for an elbow to Aaron Wainwright’s head. But for Vahaamahina’s stupidity, unpredictable France would have won. Predictably the Springboks had too much power for brave, adventuresome Japan who were eventually overcome in the second half. That should give them confidence against Six Nations champions Wales on Sunday while All Blacks and Englishmen recover from wounds suffered in what should be a bruising Saturday clash. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer
