ehind every good man there’s a great woman, the old saying goes and Santa Claus couldn’t do all the good deeds without his number one supporter and helper. Mrs Claus isn’t usually publicly acknowledged, known for her extensive work behind the scenes as she makes sure Santa has all the presents he needs for his marathon gift-giving delivery run on the night of Christmas Eve. But this Christmas, for the Howick Santa Parade on Sunday, December 8, Mrs Claus is making a special rare public appearance. It’s the 66th running of the parade and Mrs Claus is taking her place in it alongside the elves before her headline-act husband, Santa, makes his entrance at the end of what will be a colourful display of all that is good in the East Auckland community. Chief parade organising elf and event manager Bo Burns, of the Howick Children’s Charitable Trust, is thrilled so many local groups want to march in the Santa parade. “Christmas is for every-

a day of it by enjoying the pre-parade entertainment in Picton Street that starts from 11am, before the parade rolls at 2.30pm. “We’re creating a carnival atmosphere that will have something to enjoy for people of all ages,” she says. The official opening for the Howick Santa Parade event is at 11am, followed by entertaining performances by Legacy Studios, a K-Pop dance crew, Red Dance, Cockle Bay School’s kapa haka Christmas, the Eastern Stars band and the Alan Watson magic show. Parading groups start lining up in Fencible Drive and adjacent car parks from 12.15pm, before marching on the route of Wellington Street, Picton Street and Cook Street from 2.30pm. For those people who cannot attend the parade in person, they can watch it online in a live stream at http://www.youtube. com/c/HowickSantaParade. Sponsors and facilitators of the Howick Santa Parade include the Howick Children’s Charitable Trust, Barfoot and Thompson, Andrew Simms, the Howick Local Board, Lion Foundation, the Howick Club, New World, Galbraiths Law and many smaller donations and help from supportive local businesses.

Police were called to reports of a single vehicle crash Ti Rakau Drive, Pakuranga, about 6pm on Monday. One person was taken to Middlemore Hospital in serious condition. It is understood the person had to be removed from the vehicle via cutting equipment.

MP aims to axe fuel tax Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has put together a Members’ Bill that would repeal the Auckland regional fuel tax. It would also remove the ability for the Government to roll out such taxes across New Zealand. The tax was implemented in July 2018 to fund Auckland Council transport projects. Ross says the Government has increased fuel taxes in Auckland by about 25 cents a litre overall.

MECOSS looking for volunteers Manukau East Council of Social Services (MECOSS0 is seeking volunteer drivers and companions for its shopping shuttle. Every Thursday, the shuttle takes people, who often live alone or and no longer drive, to Botany Town Centre or Pakuranga Plaza for shopping and a cuppa. They have a chance to talk, ask questions, walk around and form friendships. Drivers are mainly responsible for arranging the times and routes for pick-ups and delivering their passengers safely. Companion’s help clients get into and out of the vehicle and assist with seatbelts. They can also book a walker or scooter for passengers to use at the shopping centres if required. If you are interested phone Maureen on 0800 632 677.

Developing young business leaders M

ore than 120 students from Years 7-11 competed at the 2019 BizTech competition held recently at the Botany Downs Secondary College. The competition follows in the tradition of tech giants like Microsoft and Datacom, who host similar hackathons and is focussed at encouraging entrepreneurship and developing young business leaders. Bringing together tech and health was the winning concept. Wheel of Wellbeing, the winning team, pitched a daily survey which aimed to empower consumers to be more proactive about their wellbeing.

Founder and hackathon regular Wei-Yen (Jackie) Chan is proud of the high calibre of ideas presented by students and emphasises the need for more inclusion in the tech world. “It’s incredibly exciting to see how students can come up with these ideas when given the right tools and guidance. We hope to continue encouraging the shared knowledge between industry experts and students,” she says. “The tech industry depends on diversity and inclusivity. I’m proud to say that we can have an event which connects promising young minds with industry experts, regardless of their

background,” she says. “Microsoft, Datacom, Xero and Tomahawk are primary sponsors of the event, promoting inclusivity and accessibility. Bringing in students from over 10 schools around Auckland, participants came from all walks of life. Free of charge for students and teachers, attendees went through intensive courses that taught skills such as business viability, design and tech/prototyping by industry experts. The skills were then put to the test in a friendly competition, judged by industry leaders. Students received $500+ cash prizes and limited edition goodies.

Property investors charged with deceiving banks Four property investors have been charged with fraudulently obtaining millions of dollars in home loans. The Serious Fraud Office alleges Bryan Martin (53), Viki Cotter (55), Sian Grant (48) and Joshua Grant (51) deceived banks into providing them with loans for the purchase of residential

properties mostly located in Auckland. Martin faces 10 charges of ‘Obtaining by deception’ and four charges of ‘Attempted obtaining by deception’, while Cotter faces four charges of ‘Obtaining by deception’ and three charges of ‘Attempted obtaining by deception’.

The Grants each face four charges of ‘Obtaining by deception’ and one charge of ‘Attempted obtaining by deception’. The four defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges and have been remanded on bail to reappear in the Auckland District Court on February 18.

Go Bus drivers in south and east Auckland will continue their strike action over a “bitter” employment dispute with the company by offering free fares to passengers from this morning until Christmas Eve, FIRST Union said today. More than 110 FIRST Union members at several Go Bus depots (East Tamaki, Mangere/Airport) went on strike over a month ago following a long-awaited bargaining meeting that the company used to signal their intention to cancel future negotiations with the union.

Since that meeting, bus drivers have held both partial strike actions like offering free fares as well as full withdrawals of labour that have seen relations with the company deteriorate, the union said. “The drivers are tired and frustrated but are standing strong,” said Jared Abbott, FIRST Union Secretary for Transport, Logistics and Manufacturing. “A free fares protest is a great way for bus drivers to continue the strike in a non-disruptive fashion while engaging with their passengers and communities.”

Riverhills wows with Trashmagination S

Milan Vaivai models ‘Fonterra Steampunk’, an outfit made entirely from parts of the milk boxes supplied by Fonterra for the ‘Milk in Schools’ programme.

tudents from Riverhills School have been using their imaginations to create outfits out of unwanted materials for their show ‘Trashmagination’. After months of work carefully designing and constructing extraordinary outfits, the students were excited to share their creations with friends and whanau last week. “They worked collaboratively in groups to create their outfits and compose digital music tracks to accompany their look on the stage,” says Riverhills

principal, Sarah Allen. “It was a real team effort that required perseverance, problem solving and a ‘can-do’ attitude.” ‘Trashmagination’ was presented in three sections - diversity, nature and future. Each group took inspiration from one of these themes and worked with a selection of materials in their construction. Year 4 student Ailey Hay said that her group was motivated to make a dress out of chip packets to protect sea creatures, who eat plastics that end up in the ocean.

‘Te Fiti’ was modelled by Annabel Huang and created by her Year 0/1 classmates out of wood sacks, wallpaper, plastic cups and bottle tops. The children also made paper flowers, grass and leaves for the outfit. As an Enviroschool, Riverhills staff and students have been focusing on reducing the waste they are sending to the landfill this year. Classes have led the introduction of a number of waste reduction initiatives over the year resulting in litter-free lunches, increased composting and

worm farming, and streamlined systems for sorting waste. ‘Trashmagination’ brought the community together to celebrate the students’ success in their endeavours to be kaitiaki (guardians) of the environment.

ANIMAL WELFARE

Mystery of the missing moggies ■■BY JIM BIRCHALL

C

ould the disappearance of a number of cats from the Farm Cove area be the work of an individual operating with nefarious intent? The Times has been approached by a local resident, whose cat went missing in late 2018, and been supplied information about six other felines that have apparently gone missing and never returned over the past two years. The usual evidence of an animal meeting its end via being run over or similar failed to materialise and the felines appear to have just vanished into thin air. The Times has also been supplied with disturbing photos of a drowned long-haired cat which was found in the Farm Cove estuary. The resident explained that she had personally known of three cats to have met the same fate, in the same stretch of water adjacent to the Rotary Walkway. A theory was advanced that perhaps the cats had drowned as a result of misadventure, but given cats aversion to water and the repeated cases, this is may be drawing a long bow. The SPCA was approached to supply statistics on missing cats in the area and the Times hoped

to correlate the data and look for patterns to add credence to the speculation. Communications manager Jessie Gilchrist had this to say: “We don’t have a database specifically for missing animals. For cats, I suggest people get in touch with lostpet.co.nz – this service is provided by the NZ Companion Animal Council and is an online noticeboard form for missing pets. SPCA uses this service too.” According to wikivet, cats predominantly venture only within their home range of about 1-2 kilometres from residence, and to travel away from a well-pawed track is behaviour more com-

monly seen in dogs. The case of the missing moggies draws unfortunate parallels with the Croydon cat-killer, an alleged decapitator who was said to roam south west London from 2015-2018. The Metropolitan police took the allegations seriously enough that a dedicated taskforce was established to apprehend the cat ripper. More than 2000 man-hours were tied up with the investigation, before ultimately concluding that the mutilations had not been carried out by a human, and were likely caused by wildlife predation or scavenging on cats killed in vehicle collisions. The evidence was also dismissed by crime academics who cited the growing hysteria as an example of moral panic. Trade Me co-founder and philanthropist Gareth Morgan has a particular disdain for the humble household cat, arguing they should be eradicated in order to re-establish native bird populations decimated by feline predation. Could an individual with an axe to grind be responsible, or is it simply a sad case of beloved pets meeting an unfortunate end? ➤➤www.spca.nz/advice-andwelfare/article/what-to-dowhen-you-lost-your-pet

PLOGGING

Walk and collect collecting!” Caroline started plogging earlier in the year following a conscious decision to clean up her neighbourhood. “The first time I went plogging I walked six kilometres and collected five bags of rubbish. In some ways it was disheartening discovering so much litter, but on the other hand I also felt like I’d done something rewarding. When you start actively looking for rubbish, it’s amazing how much you will find in your local streets.” As a warm-up to the upcoming weekend, Caroline plogged her way around Mangemangeroa Reserve last weekend aided by her children, an environment Caroline described as “remarkably litter-free.” The event hopes that getting people out plogging will help the idea catch on in New Zealand. “Too often we think that picking up litter is someone else’s job. Collecting rubbish is such a simple way we can help our community, the environment and our own health and wellbeing.”

Caroline Gray out with kids plogging at Mangemangeroa.

Putting a permanent smile on people’s faces Pro Tips

For someone who fainted at the sight of blood as a dental assistant at 16 years old, Ugie has come a long way. Her reputation as one of the top clinical dental technicians in Auckland and other parts of New Zealand precedes her. It was her love of aesthetics that led Ugie Moodley to put a permanent smile on people’s faces. You know you are in great hands as you hear Ms Moodley talk passionately about state-ofthe-art technology she uses to create a smile from prostheses the size of a little finger to that replacing all the teeth. “It is a blessing to be privy to all the new technology as it updates. Each course attended allows us to actually work with new materials and techniques, which makes being a clinical dental technician at this time very exciting and rewarding” she says, keeping herself updated by regularly attending workshops and courses. Most partial dentures have anchors called clasps which are used to retain the denture in your mouth. If the corners of your mouth are red and irritated, you may have a condition called Angular Cheilitis. This can be treated with a topical antifungal ointment but if the condition reappears it may be caused by the reduced vertical dimension of your dentures. Your dentures need to be checked on a regular basis, once or twice every 2 years. It is like WOF for your car only your dentures become a part of you and have to function far greater feats than your car.

The event encourages people to for a walk in their community and collect a bag of litter during the weekend of December 7 and 8. There are spot prizes being offered for participants. The event has been organised by Auckland couple Caroline and Haydn Gray who consider themselves ‘ploggers’. The term ‘plogging’ is used worldwide to refer to the activity of walking or jogging and collecting litter at the same time. The word itself is a combination of the Swedish word plocka (picking up) and jogging. As well as plogging individually, they have also introduced their children to the concept and go out collecting as a family. “Our two boys seem to have a keen eye for spotting rubbish as well as other treasures. National to invest education for kids A

MoleMap ‘on the spot’ in Pakuranga MoleMap has opened a modern, new clinic at Pakuranga Medical Centre in Cortina Place, so that locals can have regular, thorough skin and mole checks without having to leave East Auckland. MoleMap offers a thorough skin check for every body and budget, whether you want the total reassurance of their most comprehensive service – a Full Body MoleMap – or the peace of mind of a one-off skin check. The biggest benefit of MoleMap over self-checking or seeing your GP is that they don’t just check skin, they spot change. They do this by combining their proven skin-mapping system with skin cancer expertise to track changes in the skin over time. It’s an effective way to detect melanoma early, when it’s most treatable. “We’re thrilled to be right here in the heart of Pakuranga,” says Juanita Stulich, MoleMap’s Clinical Opera-

tions Manager. “Regular Full Body MoleMaps are essential to reducing the risk of melanoma, so we encourage our patients to have their skin professionally checked every year. We thoroughly check every spot from head to toe, plus our skin-mapping system monitors even the smallest changes to your skin and moles over time.”

s the MP for Pakuranga, an electorate with some of the best schools in the country, I know just how a good education can transform lives. With the right education we can overcome the challenges some children face purely because of the circumstances they were born into. That’s why education is one of National’s core investment priorities. National’s Education Discussion Document outlines many proposals we want your feedback on, and reconfirms our commitments. As National’s Associate Spokesperson for Education I have been heavily involved in this document and am looking forward to your feedback. In Early Childhood Education (ECE) we continue to focus on the quality of education and care our children receive in those foundation years, so we’re proposing spot checks on ECE services to ensure they are meeting the required standards. National will also support teachers so they can spend more

time actually teaching. Last year Simon Bridges announced a National Government would reduce class sizes at primary level. We are committed to this policy and have now released draft student-teacher ratios for feedback. More time with a teacher means more opportunities for children to ask questions and get answers, and for teachers to focus on areas where a child may be struggling. But smaller class sizes also means a need for more teachers. National is proposing a number of ways, including financial incentives, to attract more people to the profession, or to get people to return to teaching. We’re also considering changes to initial teacher training, which include strengthening practicum requirements, accredited schools involved in teacher training and more support for teachers who mentor new ones. A quality education comes from our teachers, but it also comes from a strong curriculum. We want local curriculum to

SAYS

With Simeon Brown

thrive and teachers to have world class curriculum resources. Children must leave school with firm foundations in core areas of reading, writing and maths. National also wants your feedback on tertiary education, like first year Fees Free, which has been an expensive failure and whether we should scrap it or replace it with an alternative. Our Education Discussion Document is part of the biggest policy development process undertaken by an Opposition ever. We’re doing the work now so we’re ready to hit the ground running in 2020. You can view and document and submit your thoughts at www.national.org.nz/education. Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga

Open 5 days a week from 9am to 5pm (bookings essential), you’ll find MoleMap’s new clinic at Pakuranga Medical Centre, 11-13 Cortina Place, Pakuranga. Book online at www.molemap.co.nz, or call their friendly support team on 0800 665 362.

Zonta takes stand against gender-based violence

CP3177

Thirty-five percent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or nonpartner sexual violence. As part of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence — an international campaign that aims to inspire action and end violence against women and girls around the world — the Zonta Club of east Auckland, along with members of Shakti raised awareness of the International campaign in Howick recently. The 2018 Zonta Says No to Violence Against Women campaign will match Zonta International’s efforts to help end child marriage which, this year alone, will affect more than 12 million girls worldwide, according to Girls Not Brides. At the local level, Zonta clubs across the world have organised activities and events as

part of the Zonta Says No to Violence Against Women campaign, which focuses on the service and advocacy actions of Zonta clubs and districts to prevent and end violence against women and girls in their local communities. “Early marriage is probably the most appalling act of violence against girls. It is closely associated with and often triggers other forms of violence,” says Zonta International President Susanne von Bassewitz. “Under the umbrella of Zonta Says No, Zonta members and clubs around the world will not only provide funding, but engage in advocacy activities as well to end child marriage.” Each year during the 16 Days of Activism campaign, which runs from November 25–December 10, Zonta International encourages its clubs to participate in advocacy efforts that focus on preven-

tion, protection and prosecution. This year, the Zonta Club of East Auckland is focusing on ending child marriage, a national and global human right’s violation as the centerpiece. A display highlighting the issues was showcased recently at the Howick Library. A speaker from Shakti also made a presentation. Shakti is a Women’s Refuge associate member that provides culturally appropriate domestic violence intervention services to women of Asian, African and Middle Eastern origin and their children regardless of age, immigration status, religion and sexual orientation. Zonta East Auckland meets monthly, for fellowship with a purpose – the purpose being improving the status of women and girls on a local level, nationally and internationally through service and advocacy.

he Pakuranga Choral Society, which began 45 years ago and is led this year by dynamic young local baritone Ben Kubiak, is preparing for its Christmas Variety Show. The show, on Sunday December 8, will have something for everyone and includes arrangements by Gustav Holst, Malcolm Sargent, John Rutter and David Hamilton plus popular WWII nostalgia as well as sing-along carols. Kubiak, who went to Macleans College, is the Pakuranga Choral Society’s conductor and is at present performing in Les Miserables at the Civic Theatre. He is in his second year studying for a PhD in musicology at the University of Auckland. He completed the Honours year of his Bachelor of Music degree in 2017, graduating with first class honours and winning the Drake medal for his dissertation, and as an undergraduate completed a BMus majoring in classical voice. He balances his academic work with a busy performance life. His highlights include performing as a soloist with groups including the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, the Nelson Philharmonia,

Simon Gault, one of New Zealand’s favourite chefs, has released his latest cookbook just in time for Christmas. We’ll feature a couple of his recipes each week right up until Christmas.

Tamarind ginger Christmas ham TAMARIND GINGER GLAZE

the reaction from some was as if they had been subjected to some bizarre form of Christmas abuse. I will be cooking Tamarind Ginger Ham this coming Christmas. The tamarind and candied ginger with the clover honey is sensational and should satisfy even the most critical, who should, by year’s end, have recovered from the pizza affront.

►2 00ml coconut nectar ► 1 tbsp red wine vinegar ► 1 00ml ginger beer ► 1 tbsp tamarind paste

HAM

► 1 Christmas ham, skin on ►½ cup candied (crystallised) ginger, cut into matchstick-size pieces ►¼ cup whole cloves

TAMARIND GINGER GLAZE Place all the ingredients in a saucepan and simmer gently for 5 minutes or until the glaze has reduced to a consistency thick enough to coat the back of the spoon.

Serves: Plenty

T

o make a perfect glazed ham: add water to the baking tray to stop the glaze from burning on the base of the ham; allow time for each layer of glaze to set before basting with another; and if your ham is beginning to colour too much during the cooking process, cover loosely with tinfoil. If there is any leftover ham, try it with some watermelon — it’s delicious! Wrap any leftover ham in a clean tea towel soaked in a mix of water and malt vinegar to keep it fresh.

HAM

I decided last Christmas to ignore tradition by making use of my much-loved pizza oven to produce my best examples of the famous Neapolitan pizza, which I adore. To say this was an error in judgment is like saying Tiger Woods is a reasonably good golfer. I thought it all went well but

Preheat oven to 180°C. Remove the ham from the fridge well in advance of cooking, allowing the ham to reach room temperature. Peel off the skin, being careful not to tear the fat and leaving as much of the fat layer intact as possible. Use a sharp knife to score the fat diagonally to make diamond shapes (this is a two-person job as it helps to have someone holding the ham). Stud with

pieces of candied ginger, submerging them into the ham fat, then stud with cloves. Place the ham in a large roasting dish, cover with tinfoil and cook for 30 minutes, then remove from the oven and discard the tinfoil. Add a little water to the bottom of the pan, then baste the ham with a generous coating of the Tamarind Ginger Glaze and return it to the oven. Baste the ham frequently. After being in the oven for 1 hour 15 minutes, it will be sticky and golden. (Cooking time is 45–55 minutes per kg. Ideal finished internal temperature is 62°C.) Remove the ham from the oven and allow to rest before carving. ► Extracted from Summer with Simon Gault, published by Penguin Random House NZ, RRP $50. Text © Simon Gault, 2019. t’s not called the silly season for nothing, which is why the Employers and Manufacturers Association (EMA) is taking a more light-hearted approach to some of the serious issues that can come up at end-of-year work functions. Its latest ad pushes the boundaries in highlighting the challenges of workplace gatherings, including Santa’s that get a bit too touchy-feely and colleagues that say incredibly inappropriate things. The advertisement and offer to help with Human Resource issues is part of the EMA’s ongoing SleepEasy campaign, aimed at taking the nightmares away from businesses by giving them the tools to be prepared to deal with any issues. It has also produced a free Social Events Action Guide so employers know how to keep themselves and their people safe. Without putting a damper on the celebration, tips include everything from reminding people what the alcohol policy is before the event, to making sure there is a

It’s not okay when Santas that get a bit too touchy-feely and colleagues say incredibly inappropriate things. And while most gatherings pass without incident, unfortunately from time-to-time - issues do arise that need to be addressed. The key is knowing what needs to be considered before taking action, and this is where the EMA can help. Depending on the circumstance

and the impact of an incident on the workplace, that might range from having a quiet word with an employee about their behaviour to a formal disciplinary action including dismissal. ineteen thousand kilometres is a long way to travel for truffles, but for Farm Cove local Jasbir Kaur it’s all in a day’s work. The general manager of Manukau private training provider Ignite Colleges, Jasbir is also an award-winning chef and president of the Auckland branch of the NZChefs Association. And if that’s not enough, she’s made it her lifework to promote New Zealand cuisine on the world stage and bring international flavour Down Under. Tomorrow Jasbir boards a flight to Spain where she’ll be one of 10 internationally-acclaimed chefs selected to judge the world truffles competition, Cocinando Con Trufa (Cooking with Truffle). Now in its second year, the event takes place in Soria from December 2-4 and draws competitors from all over the world keen to showcase their culinary prowess. “Global cooking competitions are breaking down boundaries, enabling chefs to build their reputations internationally and gain exposure to different cuisines and cooking styles,” says Jasbir. “While I’m there I’ll also be working hard to promote New Zealand cuisine and will bring back lots of fresh ideas to share with my cookery students at Ignite Colleges.”

Jasbir Kaur, from Farm Cove, is in demand globally for her culinary expertise. Photo supplied

Ignite’s state-of-the-art cookery school is a launchpad for New Zealand’s next generation of top chefs, thanks in part to Jasbir’s innovative approach and international reputation. Earlier this month she was flown to Valladolid, Spain, the only international judge on a panel of eight top chefs tasked with selecting Spain’s national tapas champion. Together with her fellow judges – all renowned Michelin starred chefs – Jasbir rated contestants across a range of categories including flavour, presentation and commercial viability. “The level of creativity and amazing combination of flavours we saw in these competition

dishes were extraordinary and among the best I’ve ever experienced.” And she has certainly experienced plenty. Not only was Jasbir a competitor in the 2017 World Tapas Championships, she is also the driving force behind the Australasian Tapas Championships, an annual competition hosted by Ignite Colleges which sees leading chefs from Australia and New Zealand battle it out for a spot at the World Champs. Jasbir’s passion for tapas began back in 2017 when she had a stint in Barcelona working at Michelinstarred Disfrutar, considered to be one of the world’s top restaurants. Since then her connection with Spain has flourished. Not only has she been a competitor and a judge at some of their most high-profile culinary competitions but she has launched a unique programme enabling Ignite Colleges hospitality and cookery students to complete internships at Michelin-starred restaurants in Spain. Her efforts to build culinary ties between NZ and Spain haven’t gone unnoticed. The Ambassador of Spain in New Zealand, Fernando Curcio Ruigómez, recently presented Jasbir with a special award in appreciation of her ongoing support of Spanish gastronomy.

son who came along were given a free rat trap to take home and set at their own house. People from different Rotary Clubs were also there lending out traps. If we catch a rat we enter the information into an online data collection site, CatchIT, who register and track what we catch. This is a real citizen-science project which has been fun to be a part of. This led me to see how I might influence others in my neighbourhood, making them aware of the issues we face with pests in our area. Tim Lovegrove, a Senior Advisor Fauna who works as a scientist with the Biodiversity Group in the

Auckland Council invited us to visit the Hunua Ranges and learn about the Hunua Kokako Project. We visited the Hunua Ranges to find out how the kokako has grown successfully as they were down to just one breeding pair in 1994 (as mentioned earlier). 1080 drops wiped out rats and possums, the target pests which had been eating the kokako chicks. After this, traps were laid to control the pests at lower numbers. The kokako now has more opportunity to breed and have more chicks. Last summer, Tim and his team monitored a sample of six pairs closely to see how many chicks they produced. Between them the six pairs fledged 18 young, an average of three chicks per pair. This works out to over 300 young produced during the 2018-19 summer alone. He had a lot of knowledge about the kokako. I hope to volunteer for this project to continue the good stuff we see happening. If you would like to join me in helping to make Howick Local Area pest-free, please email Lorelle Stranaghan (coordinator) from Pest Free Howick Ward, a Howick Local Board Funded Project: lorelle.stranaghan@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz Nael Fawad Ormiston Junior College

ats were first introduced to New Zealand by Maori settlers more than 700 years ago and additionally further rat species were brought on whaling ships from European settlers. Before rats existed here, it was peace for our native animals because they did not have any predators to hunt them. The arrival of rats has caused the numbers of native animals to go down extremely fast. For example the kokako was down to one breeding pair in 1994 because of these rats which hunted down their babies. Part of my reason for looking into this issue is because I have been involved in some projects at school, highlighting our native species in our ‘Unique New Zealand’. One of the first outcomes of our project was that we held a Pestival in conjunction with Lorelle Stranaghan (co-ordinator) Pest Free Howick Ward – a Howick Local Board funded project, Cate Jessep from Sustainable Schools, and Niklas Erikson from Auckland Council Biosecurity. We held the Pestival here at our Ormiston Junior College. People from our community and beyond came and talked to us about how pests are harming our native wildlife, and offered suggestions to how we as the public can help. We were shown how to unset and set a rat trap and each per-

ot many are aware that Sir Barry Curtis, former mayor of Manukau for 24 years had a big role to play in the building of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple at Stancombe Rd. “I had the pleasure of joining the most Venerable Hsin Ting, the Abbot of Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order headquarters to officiate at the sod turning ceremony to celebrate the commencement of construction of this magnificent temple,” he said at the formal ceremony of the Cherry Blossom Festival held along with the Art Salon Finale at the temple. He gave due credit to Venerable Abbess Manshin and her team as he presented her with a plaque to record the creation of the tranquil gardens at the temple. On last count, the Cherry Blossom Festival that hosted an awe-inspiring art exhibition and had a variety of stalls at the forecourt was attended by over 9000 people on Sunday.

Cats go missing in Farm Cove C

ould the disappearance of a number of cats from the Farm Cove area be the work of an individual operating with nefarious intent? The Times has been approached by a local resident, whose cat went missing in late 2018, and been supplied information about six other felines that have apparently gone missing and never returned over the past two years. The usual evidence of an animal meeting its end via being run over or similar failed to materialise and the felines appear to have just vanished into thin air. The Times has also been supplied with disturbing photos of a drowned long-haired cat

which was found in the Farm Cove estuary. The SPCA was approached to supply statistics on missing cats in the area and the Times hoped to correlate the data and look for patterns to add credence to the speculation. Communications manager Jessie Gilchrist had this to say: “We don’t have a database specifically for missing animals. For cats, I suggest people get in touch with lostpet.co.nz

– this service is provided by the NZ Companion Animal Council and is an online noticeboard form for missing pets. SPCA uses this service too.” According to wikivet, cats predominantly venture only within their home range of about 1-2 kilometres from residence, and to travel away from a well-pawed track is behaviour more commonly seen in dogs. The case of the missing moggies draws unfortunate parallels with the Croydon catkiller, an alleged decapitator who was said to roam south west London from 2015-2018. The Metropolitan police took the allegations seriously enough that a dedicated taskforce was established to apprehend the cat ripper. More than 2000 man-hours were tied up with the investigation, before ultimately concluding

that the mutilations had not been carried out by a human, and were likely caused by wildlife predation or scavenging on cats killed in vehicle collisions, The evidence was also dismissed by crime academics who cited the growing hysteria as an example of moral panic.  www.spca.nz/advice-and-welfare/article/ what-to-do-when-you-lost-your-pet

World School Sevens coming to Pakuranga H T

he World School Sevens, a showcase of young male and female players from around the world, is coming to Pakuranga next month. A total of 32 teams will tough it out on December 13 and 14 at Pakuranga United Rugby Club – a club which furnished its own Sevens star Charles Piutau back in 2011 among a host of provincial, Super Rugby and All Blacks team members. “It all starts here, at the grassroots, with young athletes being able to show their skills at an international level to a global audience,” says Tex Teixeira, Sky’s director of sport, broadcast and entertainment. Sky Sport has naming rights sponsorship of the World School Sevens. “We hope to raise the profile of the Sky Sport World School Sevens event which will futureproof this exciting sport.” The Sky Sport World School Sevens kicks off at 9am on Friday December 13 and runs through to 5pm on Saturday. Live coverage will ensure all games played on Field 1 at Pakuranga get the attention they deserve. Phil Gaze, tournament director, says, “Since the inception of

aving completed their first double century and century respectively in the first cricket test against England at Tauranga’s Bay Oval on Sunday, BJ Watling and Mitchell Santner epitomised true grit. It is that special quality that has enabled the Black Caps to perform beyond expectations on the world stage in a sport which has glorified the feats of Australia, India, the West Indies, England, Pakistan and South Africa over the years. West Indies no longer have the feared pace bowling attack nor destructive batsmen like Viv Richards and Brian Lara they once did and South Africa’s form has diminished too. Now with India, Australia and England regarded as the game’s heavyweights, New Zealand have punched well above their weight, finishing runner-up in the last two ODI World Cups to Australia and England respectively. Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner combine to add swing, seam and bounce to the pace attack and 150km per hour speedster Lockie Ferguson adds menace at ODI and T20 level. Hard-hitting allrounder Colin de Grandhomme offers guile with his medium pace and although no spinner of Daniel Vettori’s class has emerged, Santner is being rewarded for tossing the ball up with

his variable flight. Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor are truly world class batsmen. The admirable Guptill was at ODI level and Henry Nicholls and Tom Latham have developed nicely. Add the power play of Colin Munro, Jimmy Neesham and de Grandhomme and the potential for fast scoring is there although all three can be a bit reckless. Not so No 7 and 8 batsmen Watling and Santner, who showed with their remarkable 206 not out and unbeaten 105 on Sunday a maturity that bodes well for the future. That astonishing innings and 65-run victory gave the Black Caps their seventh series triumph in an unbeaten run over 32 months and they have lost just one of 16 at home. Up until now I had thought Ian Smith the best wicket keeper/batsman NZ has produced. But having taken his test average over 40 to become his country’s ninth most successful test batsman, Watling has surpassed him with the willow. Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer
