Howick’s Rev Dr Richard Waugh, National Superintendent of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of New Zealand shares this statement said all New Zealanders are horrified by the tragic events at the mosques in Christchurch. Dr Waugh also serves as chairman of Auckland Church Leaders Meeting and chairman of National Church Leaders Aotearoa New Zealand Meeting. “We repudiate such hateful action and hold onto the promise of Scripture which says, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” It is appalling beyond words what has happened and our prayers, thoughts and practical generosity extend to all Muslim families suffering so terribly at this time.

At 89, one of New Zealand’s truly great sporting icons, Yvette Corlett CNZM, MBE of Howick, passed away on Saturday, mourned by a nation who loved her as much for her gracious humility as her athletic prowess.

The man who killed Flat Bush mother Xi Wang has been sentenced to life in prison. Ephraim Beazley, who last month admitted to murdering his ex-wife as she held their two-year-old son in her arms, appeared in the High Court today.

Andre Heimgartner has broken through for a podium finish at the WD-40 Phillip Island SuperSprint at the weekend. With a third-place finish in Saturday’s race, Heimgartner secured his second Supercars podium result and his first as a solo driver.

The last controls on fruit and vegetables have been lifted due to there being no fruit flies detected since March 14, which affected suburbs including parts of Flat Bush.

Residents of Point View Dr are having sleepless nights as they worry about their safety. Boy racers doing doughnuts and wheelies till the early hours, late night parties with drug dealings and fights disturbing the peace at night, sexual paraphernalia strewn all over the vacant sections of land at 178 Point View Dr, has made it a “nightmare” for residents.

Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross isn’t giving up his fight to have safety improvements carried out to an east Auckland traffic blackspot. Pickering becomes principal

Gabby umpires from wheelchair

A familiar face has taken up the reins at Howick Intermediate School. Sara Pickering looks right at home in the principal’s seat as she talks about her plans for the school’s future. Having stepped up from being the deputy principal, Pickering knows the school like the back of her hand. “To be honest, I don’t think some of the student’s have even noticed they have a new principal,” she laughs.

Gabby Wright took to the netball courts at on Saturday to umpire her first competition game. This in itself may not be that extraordinary, but the fact that the Pakuranga College student did this from a wheelchair certainly is. Gabby was a little nervous when she arrived at the Howick and Pakuranga Netball Courts bright and early and a little bit coy about the attention she was receiving at first.

MP: Nothing in it for us The Labour/NZ First/Green Government’s so-called “Wellbeing” Budget is anything but and is simply another example of a government with no plan to improve the lives of everyday New Zealanders, says Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga. “This is not a wellbeing budget. The hardworking people of Pakuranga will be left asking what’s in it for them. Pohutukawa Coast DROWNING PREVENTION

UNBEATABLE DEALS ON THE WORLD’S BEST ENGINES

Water safety at Hunua Falls W

ater Safety New Zealand, Auckland Council, Drowning Prevention Auckland and a number of Auckland water safety partners are working together this summer to prevent further drownings at popular summer spot, Hunua Falls. The Falls is one of the focus areas of the Auckland regional water safety plan, a collaborative plan to better co-ordinate efforts and activities in Auckland, with three fatalities recorded at Hunua in the last three years and huge numbers of visitors over the summer months. A pilot programme is underway this summer to better educate people about the dangers at the falls, with onsite water safety advisors stationed at the falls over the summer months. Data will also be gathered to gain better insights into visitation and activity at the site. Hunua Falls boasts the highest number of preventable drownings for Falls in New Zealand since records

began, and despite onsite warnings, people continue to lose their lives unnecessarily. “Hunua Falls while a beautiful spot is also incredibly dangerous” says WSNZ CEO Jonty Mills. “Like all of our waterways everyone needs to be aware of the risks. It’s our hope that this work at Hunua will help us better target important water safety messages to those who may come to the falls and prevent further drownings.”

Auckland Councillor and Parks, Arts, Community and Events Chairperson Alf Filipaina says that the number of deaths at the falls are alarming. “We want people to come and enjoy the beauty of these incredible falls but people need to realise that the falls are unsuitable for swimming”. Cr Filipaina says that education is important and having an on-site water safety advisors shows how serious the situation has become. “Too many people have died here in the past. We want to do what we can to see no more families suffer the loss of a loved one here”. Drowning Prevention Auckland CEO Nicola KeenBiggelaar says the water safety advisors are a great way to educate visitors about the dangers. “It’s so important visitors do not underestimate the risks at Hunua Falls. We really want people enjoying what Auckland has to offer but we want them returning safely to their families at the end of the day.”

July Family displaced after Maraetai blaze A Givealittle page has been started to help a Maraetai family which lost everything in a house fire last week. Smoke was seen billowing across Maraetai as firefighters battled a house fire on Craig Road last Thursday. Fire engines from Otara, Howick and Manurewa responded to the fire at around 1.45pm, but back-up was required, bringing the total number of engines to 11.

Old Library locked

A battle is brewing over the old Howick Library building in Fencible Drive — and it could jeopardise the future of the Howick Market. The Howick Village Association (HVA) has held keys to the ageing building at 16 Fencible Drive for a decade, according to one HVA member. The building was used for storing equipment used in the community. Now the HVA has been locked out by Panuku Development, Auckland Council’s development arm, citing public safety.

Leaky school: McConnell must pay $1m costs

Shelly Park turns 40! It’s a big year for Shelly Park School as they celebrated their big 40 last Tuesday also known as Foundation Day, the day the school opened back in 1979. In honour of the milestone, a birthday celebration was put together by a keen team of parents spearheaded by Ali Cromack, secretary of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

The parent company of a construction company found liable for more than $13 million for repairs on Botany Down Secondary School has been slapped with legal costs of more than $1m. McConnell is the ultimate parent of H Construction North Island Ltd, formerly known as Hawkins Construction North Island Ltd, or Hawkins for short. Hawkins built the buildings comprising Botany Downs Secondary College which have been plagued with water tightness issues. After a fourweek trial in the High Court at Auckland, Justice Mathew Downs found Hawkins liable for almost $13.5 million, “the amount necessary to repair the school”. Ten days later, Hawkins was placed in receivership. Within a month of the judgment, Hawkins went into voluntary liquidation.

Measles reported at 2 schools Two cases of the highly contagious disease measles have been reported at two local schools. Dr Julia Peters, clinical director at the Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS), confirmed there have been two cases of measles associated with Brookby School and Wakaaranga School. No other schools in this area have had confirmed cases although Howick Primary thought it had a case. “If there is a measles case in a school, ARPHS advises the Ministry of Education, and works with the school to inform staff, students and their families,” Dr Peters said.

Two more cases of measles at schools

One little boy’s wish to walk When Ethan Jones arrived in this world, nearly three months earlier than he should have and weighing only 1.4kg, his family had no idea what lay ahead for him. Daily physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, speech therapy, conductive education and regular Botox injections in his legs to reduce stiffness are the reality for the now four-year-old. Ethan has cerebral palsy (CP) and in a few short months will fly to St Louis Children’s Hospital in America for life changing surgery.

There have been two confirmed cases of measles at two local high schools. Auckland Regional Public Health Service clinical director Dr Julia Peters confirmed to the Times that it informed Macleans College and Pakuranga College last Friday that a student at the school had been confirmed with the highly contagious disease measles. It follows two cases reported at Brookby School and Wakaaranga schools last month (Times, July 4).

First Asian Commodore at BBYC

For the first time in its 70 year history, Bucklands Beach Yacht Club has welcomed a member of Asian descent onto its management board. Wayne Huang was elected as Rear Commodore Power (power boats) at the clubs AGM at the end of last month.

Driver: I’m no hero Arthur Moore is 82, resilient and full of hope. The Pakuranga resident has bowel cancer and, for five weeks, took two buses every week day to Auckland Hospital for radiotherapy treatment. It was on one of those travel days into the city in June that he stumbled while trying to catch his bus, the city-bound Howick & Eastern 70x. It was a nasty fall and one which landed him in hospital for five days with a brain bleed. Despite the set-back, Arthur remains upbeat and is eternally grateful to the bus driver that day, and a couple of passengers who came to his rescue. After getting him aboard the bus and patching him up, the bus driver made a diversion and dropped Arthur at Auckland hospital. Driver Sandeep Singh, 32, of Pakuranga, was at the wheel negotiating morning rushhour and witnessed Arthur’s fall.

Football kit brings smiles in Uganda There’s a very proud bunch of kids in a Ugandan village sporting some very smart football kit thanks to a Botany family and Bucklands Beach Association Football Club (BBAFC).

Wrong-way driver in police custody

WWII vet remembered World War II veteran Benjamin Alfred Smith passed away peacefully on August 10 in his 99th year. A service to celebrate Ben’s life was held at the Howick RSA yesterday. Smith – 203420 – served from 1941 to 1946 in 2nd Div NZEF finishing as a corporal.

The driver responsible for injuring himself and three others in a horrific head on collision near Highbrook on Thursday is in police custody. The 40-year-old man will be facing charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and endangering transport after he drove a stolen car the wrong way down the Southern Motorway, crashing into an innocent motorist. The crash, which shut down all southbound lanes for two hours, was captured on camera by the Police eagle helicopter. The eagle helicopter was deployed shortly after 9am on Thursday when complaints about the driver were first received by police.

The New Zealand team comprising of (l-r) Madi Taylor, Hayley Christini, Grace Christey , Abbey Bolton, Neela Patel scored second place at the International Aerobics Championship.

Winning team at International Aerobics Championship Howick locals Abbey Bolton, Neela Patel and Madi Taylor couldn’t believe their ears when their team clinched second place out of 17 countries participating at the 30th Annual International Aerobics Championship in the US. The ecstatic 14-year-olds were part of a team of five. Participating at an international level in the US - hosted by the Association of National Aerobics Championship (ANAC) in Phoenix Arizona - was a first for all of them. And to make podium was a huge achievement.

Update on Howick postal services NZ Post has confirmed that it is partnering with Paper Plus Howick from Monday August 26. Kiwibank announced last September it is to close its Howick branch and that New Zealand Post would look for a local business to take up some of its services.

Primary school principals to go on strike Primary and intermediate school principals have been on a slow-down strike for the past month, boycotting Ministry-related work to fight for better pay and working conditions. On the cards is another full-day strike on Thursday, August 22 as primary school principals are considering an increase in strike action.

Students stand up against discrimination He was shell-shocked as bullets whizzed past him and killed people. A 12-year-old was screaming saying ‘my dad is dying’. There was lot of blood everywhere, said Toffazal Alam, reliving the nightmare of one of the mosque terror attacks in Christchurch. Talking to students at Howick College on the occasion of the Big Stand (stand against bulling), an annual event which was this year called Educate and Embrace - back-to-back assemblies through the day had an underlining theme of discrimination and hate speech and how our actions will create the world we want to live in.

126 firearms handed in Police are pleased with the turnout of firearms owners at the Pakuranga firearms collection event on Father’s Day Sunday. Seventy-one owners were processed at the Government’s gun buyback event at Pakuranga United Rugby Club with 126 firearms handed in along with 484 firearms parts. The amnesty period for the ban - imposed after the Christchurch mosque killings - ends in December.

Rainfall good for dams Despite heavy rainfall on Tuesday night — and the wettest August since 1992 — water utility company Watercare continues to warn Aucklanders to be mindful of water usage. Watercare told the Times it recorded rainfall overnight Tuesday of 24.5mm at the Lower Huia Dam and 56.5 mm at the Mangatangi Dam. “Now the dams are 79 per cent full compared with a historical average of 90.5 per cent for this time of year,” a Watercare spokesperson said.

Millions in assets seized Police have arrested six people and seized millions in assets following a significant money laundering investigation in Auckland. Last Wednesday police executed search warrants at addresses in East Tamaki Heights, Remuera, Papatoetoe and Karaka as police continues to focus on targeting those laundering money from the proceeds of crime. Six people have been arrested as part of Operation Menelaus which has been underway since the beginning of the year.

Still no clarity on freedom camping

Paradise lost? Big stink at Formosa

The contentious issue of freedom camping around Howick has reared its head again. The matter was raised at a recent Howick Local Board meeting by board member Adele White. In a 2018 media release Auckland Council announced it had plans to allow freedom campers at four locations around Howick and Pakuranga.

Embattled golf resort Formosa, in Pine Harbour, has been in the news in the past year over accusations raw sewage has been pumped out of on-site septic tanks and disposed of in a stream that flows to the ocean. The company was served with an abatement notice by Auckland Council on January 31 this year, concerning the toxic effluent-filled wastewater.

Endeavour replica retraces the passage of Cook

Vicious assault in Flat Bush

Botany electorate office opens

The replica of the Endeavour sailed into Maraetai last week as part of the Tuia250 commemorations which mark 250 years since the arrival to New Zealand of Captain James Cook and the Endeavour in 1769. Accompanied by the Spirit of New Zealand and other vessels, the flotilla landed on the beach at Magazine bay, adjacent to the Umupuia marae. Due to channel restrictions the tall ships dropped anchor approximately 1 kilometre offshore. Beachlands local Steve Lucas has sailed on the leg from Gisborne to Maraetai, where the Endeavour replica was moored.

There was a huge turnout for the opening of the new National Party office for the Botany Electorate this week. From MPs Judith Collins to Northcote MP Dan Bidois, National Party list member Brett Hudson, National’s first woman MP of Pacific Island descent Agnes Loheni and Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown who worked closely with the Botany electorate staff Katja Kershaw and Lisa Ambridge to get the new National office opened-it was a house full.

Lyon roars in the face of Luxon Former Air New Zealand chief executive Chris Luxon entering the Botany candidate selection for the National Party does not faze local nominee Stephen Lyon - or sitting independent MP Jami-Lee Ross. “If there is one thing I intend to get absolutely right, it is being of service to the people of Botany” says Lyon. He goes on to suggest that he has all the capability necessary to contribute to the National Party, and New Zealand at the highest level but for him it must start with service to his local electorate.

St Mark’s School head retiring

Leaving was a hard decision to make for Catherine Rivers. The St Mark’s Catholic School principal admits she still gets a little teary-eyed when she reflects on her decision to retire after leading the school for 17 years.
