ix local schools, 10 teams and 38 students from different schools were all on a mission to banish an invasive species of moth pods and vines that have tenaciously spread their tentacles all over Auckland. The students went about it with militant precision, and their efforts were well rewarded at an awards function held recently by Auckland Council at Howick College. A handsome prize of $2000 for moth pod heads got local students to collect 9989 pods and small vines with around 700 seeds per pod. It means that 6,992,300 seeds will not germinate, said Lorelle Stranaghan, coordinator Pest-Free Howick, who is thrilled with the response. In an attempt to create a pest-free Howick Ward, along with collecting the pods and small vines by the roots, the students also cut the vines and applied a herbicide paste called Picloram Gel which kills the vine (they get a kit as part of the competition containing a bottle of Picloram Gel, a supply of disposable gloves, protective eyewear,

Richard Henty, head of learning science at Howick College who informally started Society Totally Against Moth Plant (STAMP) in 2004 encouraged students to begin formally mapping and tracking moth pod plants and the locations they have visited. “Report all known addresses or gps (coordinates) of where you went. From October 1 you must challenge yourself to visit and report on 20 known locations near you,” he told the enviro groups. Team Demon comprising Alexey Filyaev and Tanish Mahakal, both 13, from Botany Downs Secondary College proved to be zealous pod hunters as they demolished 2265 pods over a period of one month and went home happy with $500. The second prize of $400 was also scored by the Cultured Moth Destroyers from Botany College as the team managed to vanquish 1878 pods in total. Team Moth-erland Protectors from Macleans College took the third prize of $300 for getting rid of 1588 pods. The Edgewater College Enviro Club won $200 for
fourth with a prized collection of 1349 moth pods and vines to their credit. The Howick College Enviro Group were fourth and went home with $150 for 1028 pods, while team Sancta Maria College won $100 for getting rid of 882 pods. Sponsored by the Auckland Southern Local Boards and the Second Nature Charitable Trust, the Manukau Beautification Trust’s ‘Eye on Nature’ Wearable Art Fashion Show has become a much anticipated dramatic platform, where students will showcase some of the most creative entries imaginable. Students are encouraged to use recyclable, repurposed and or organic materials. Entries just keep getting more impressive each year. This year, the High School and
Primary/Intermediate School 2019 Wearable Art competition is themed ‘Nurturing our Forest’ Friend or Foe. The Little Einstein group, a team of four boys and six girls from Pointview Primary School are excited to be entering two costumes, thinking outside the square using STEM subjects’ science, math and technology to come up with an artistic costume to be modelled on the cat walk. Providing students with an exciting opportunity to perform in a professional venue, the EON Wearable Art Fashion Show will be held at the Vodafone Event Centre on Thursday June 27 at 6.30pm. here was a lot of fun, laughter and spoken Portuguese as a busload principals from Brazil recently descended on the grounds of Howick College. A rousing welcome by the kapa haka group along with a line-up of excited Brazilian students studying
at the college welcomed 47 principals who were there to learn about innovative and sustainable learning pathways introduced by Howick College. On a seven-day tour of New Zealand, the educators were on a whistle-stop tour of eight schools and universities in Auckland and Wellington.
Joao Paulo Salgueiro from Salgueiro School said the group is part of the UNESCO Associated School Programme (ASP) that connects good teaching practices on a global level. The UNESCO values of diversity, peace, tolerance, human rights and cultural heritage are upheld whilst looking at sustainable development goals in education, he says.
“We travel once a year to different countries known for good quality education. Canada, Japan and Netherlands France and Spain are the other countries the group has travelled to recently,” he said. Another principal, Paulo Pereira, says that 11,000 schools in 180 countries around the world are part of UNESCO ASP.
Mike Stanghan, business manager and international director, says Howick College has always been the college of choice for Brazilian students and “the long-standing relations has culminated in this trip where principals get to learn about the education system in New Zealand and understand the differences an innovations”.

Smart class connects Owairoa to China ■■By Farida Master A big delegation of dignitaries from China has delivered a special gift to Owairoa Primary School. The school was one of those chosen to provide an important platform for exchanging information and opportunities in Auckland. Celebrating the sister-school relationship with Chaotian Elementary School, the grand event also marked the unveiling of the newly installed Owairoa Distance Learning Classroom as it coincided with the 30th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Auckland and Guangzhou. “Our school was extremely honoured to be chosen as New Zealand’s only school to receive this fantastic facility of an intelligent classroom with two big multimedia screens, kindly donated to us by the leading educational technology company
CreateView,” says Owairoa Primary principal Alan McIntyre. Aligning with Techweek 19, one of New Zealand’s largest technology events that focuses on digital creativity, two installers were flown over from China to install the smart classroom equipment . The goal is to enhance digital teaching techniques that will allow the school to have digital communication across the globe. Diane McIntyre, who helped organise the logistics of the big event that included a week-long cultural exchange between 10 Chaotian students, accompanied by teacher Ms Dana Lin and five parents, says: “The plan is to establish a connection to Chaotian Primary School, allowing their students and teachers to observe the teaching methods we utilise here at Owairoa. “They can see how we teach and also read the white board that our teacher writes on while we too can

Petition calls for ‘No’ vote on euthanasia P
akuranga MP Simeon Brown was presented with the local results of a nationwide petition asking MPs to vote ‘no’ to the End of Life Choice Bill. Peter Thirkell, secretary of the Care Alliance, said 1929 voters in the eastern Auckland electorates (Pakuranga, Botany, Tamaki, Maungakiekie) had signed the petition since it was launched last month.
“The depth and breadth of concern about this bill is reflected in the rapid collection of signatures online and in person. It follows on from the 38,707 submissions to the Select Committee, of which 90 per cent were opposed.” Dr Thirkell urged Brown to vote no at the Second Reading. “The clear evidence from the Select Committee hearings is that
FLATBUSH
Howick Local Board has endorsed Panuku Development Auckland’s recommendation to quit a small parcel of land at 303 Te Irirangi Drive. This means they have agreed to give up a small section of a 10,083 square metre site at Clover Park. About 9400 square metres of the site is required for transport infrastructure use. The remainder – about 680 square metres – will be part of a land swap with the owner of neighbouring land. A vacant site acquired by Manukau City Council in 2002, 303 Te Irirangi Drive has been held for flood remediation and future transport purposes. In 2013, the land was taken from the owner of the adjoining 128 Ormiston Road in Flat Bush in accordance with the Public Works Act for roading purposes. The owner indicated an interest in acquiring a small parcel of 303 Te Irirangi Drive to square up their property boundaries. The decision is now passed on the Finance and performance Committee Approval. The Howick local Board has agreed with a Panuku recommendation that a small parcel of land (pictured in red) at 303 Te Irirangi Drive will be part of a land swap with the owner of the neighbouring property. the bill is unnecessary, unsafe and unwise. “This petition asks all MPs to follow those facts. “Genuinely caring for people with chronic and terminal illnesses requires much more than offering a lethal injection.” Brown said the End of Life Choice Bill is a “difficult and controversial issue”.
“I have been pleased to engage with people from across Pakuranga on both sides of the issue over the past year and value everyone’s opinion,” he said. ”I was pleased to accept this petition which represents a large number of people who oppose this Bill in the east Auckland community. “As I outlined in my column in last week’s Howick and Pakuranga Times,
MURPHY’S BUSH RESERVE
I will be voting ‘no’ to this Bill as it is clear that no system of euthanasia, no matter how carefully designed, can ensure the most vulnerable in society are protected from coercion. “Instead I believe we must be investing more into palliative care, and ensuring people are more informed around the rights they have in making advanced care directives.”

Teachers take strike action T
here was complete chaos on Queen Street yesterday as thousands of teachers from primary and secondary schools walked off their jobs in a combined national mega strike demanding better pay and working conditions. While Murray Burton, principal of Elim Christian College, said that he could only urge parents to keep the kids at home during yesterday’s historic nationwide strike, the Ministry of Education said 1424 schools had advised they would be closed. In an industrial action which has
included both primary and secondary teachers for the first time, teachers and supporters marched from Fort Street to Queen Street, waving placards at onlookers. The strike action affected 773,000 students with parents being forced to take leave or make alternate arrangements for their kids to be looked after. The marches were organised by the Post Primary Teachers Association and the New Zealand Educational Institute, the union that represents nearly 50,000 teachers across the country.

It takes a village to raise an exhibition U
nder the inspirational guidance of the exhibition curator, Ros Palmer, the team of volunteers and staff at the Howick Historical Village have worked together to provide a mind-boggling display of all things Victorian to celebrate the 200 years anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birthday. To quote Village Manager Kerry Powell: “What Ros has created is just fantastic and provides an excellent interactive experience for visitors of all ages. It has all come from Ros’s individual ideas and creativity. By harnessing and fostering the skills of the supporting team, the exhibition has been brought to practical reality.” The public is invited to enjoy the exhibition through to midJuly. Visitors will be delighted to discover many quirky and interesting stories relating to a monarch whose influence still touches many lives today. “For example, did you know that Queen Victoria is the reason that wedding dresses are white! “ said Kerry. “Her influence was extensive throughout the empire and her name lives on all over the world in parks, geographical landmarks, street names, even our very own Queen Street which was named in her honour in 1840.”

Controversial blue artwork vandalised
Theo the Gypsy Cob watching William swimming.

A boy and his horse win big award ■■By Therese Henkin When William Gauld is with his horse, Theo, he feels calm and happy. And by writing about it, the Clevedon School student nabbed first place in the Youth category for the NZ Gypsy Cob Association Annual Awards. William, 10, had to write about Theo and their adventures together over the past season. Theo is one of the first purebred Gypsy Cobs bred by William’s mum, Nicola Dalmeida. William fell in love with Theo, who is now 3.5 years old, so they decided to keep him. “I learnt that I can go up to Theo’s paddock and give him cuddles and it makes me feel way better,” William wrote in his Youth Category entry. “When I am struggling at school I think about Theo and then somehow I calm down and feel more relaxed.” William says he and Theo spend their time practicing show tricks,

swimming together and as of recently, ride together. In December, William took Theo to his first show and they walked away with 2nd, 3rd and 4th place ribbons. “He is sensitive like me and he can be a bit of a sook sometimes, but he always trusts me if we do it together. I feel good that I can help him get over his fears,” William says. Nicola says William wrote his entry all by himself, wanting to describe in his own words the special bond he has with his horse. William says one day he hopes to get to Horse of the Year with Theo.

rawford Reserve’s controversial blue artwork ‘Kid Justice’ has been temporarily removed for repairs. Vandals recently damaged the feet of the $55,000 artwork, which was erected less than six months ago. Kid Justice, by artist Erin Forsyth, was created as part of the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage. Forsyth says Kid Justice depicted a “young person, a Governance, upholding equality for all people, looking toward an unseeable future.” The community has been divided in their opinions of the artwork with many saying the monument is a “waste of money” and an “eye-sore”. Others were supportive and have said they feel proud Howick was chosen to feature an artwork with such significant meaning and that it fills a gap in Howick’s public art collection.
Win! World-leading original ukulele trio The Nukes will perform at Uxbridge Theatre in Howick at 8pm on Saturday, June 8. We have a double pass ticket,
Auckland Council’s Manager Public Art Emily Trent says they will be working with their maintenance team to repair the damage as quickly as possible. “It’s disappointing to see acts of vandalism to public art projects, which ultimately cost local ratepayers,” she says. “To ensure the work isn’t vandalised further, Kid Justice will be temporarily taken off-site for repairs.” Trent encouraged people to report any vandalism with as much information as possible on 09 301 01 01. Kid Justice rests on a plinth which has been designed as a permanent foundation on which to install a changing collection of art that responds to both contemporary and historic themes. Repairs are estimated to take around three week and Kid Justice is expected to remain a feature at Crawford Reserve for five years.

ENVIRONMENT
Plastic targeted at local beaches E
ighty people volunteered on Sunday in the last of four beach clean-ups around the Tamaki Estuary. Half the volunteers sat down on the job, because they were using tweezers to remove microplastics from the beach. Conservation Volunteers New Zealand (CVNZ) and the Tamaki Estuary Environmental Forum (TEEF) organised the clean-up to remove litter, microplastics and nurdles from the shoreline. Nurdles are litter from the plastics manufacturing industry. Lentil-sized resin pellets called nurdles are melted down to form consumer plastic products. But they are washing up on shores around the Tamaki Estuary and TEEF wants them gone. “Little Bucklands Beach looks pretty clean, until you focus on the small stuff along the high tide line”
says Beth Evans, initiator of the TEEF Nurdle Project. “Volunteers have been shocked at the number of nurdles they are finding” says Beth. “Nurdles float and look like food to wildlife” says TEEF co-chair Julie Chambers. “We can all do our bit to keep plastic out of the environment by disposing of it properly and using less, but sadly, consumers don’t have any control over nurdles”. TEEF is trying different technologies to help clean-up the nurdles and other microplastics. “So far we’ve tried tweezers, sieves, a wheelie bin converted into a filter and last week a prototype aqua drone” says Julie. TEEF is seeking to work with industry, businesses, Auckland Council and local communities to clean-up the Tamaki Estuary and to stop further contamination.
Volunteers devoted hours cleaning up our beaches.

You’ve probably heard that using electronic devices with screens right before bed can negatively affect your sleep. But why is this, exactly? As it turns out, the light from an electronic screen can disrupt your circadian rhythm, tricking your body into thinking it’s daytime. Your circadian rhythm (your body’s internal clock) consists of a roughly 24-hour cycle of intermittent periods of drowsiness and alertness. Daylight keeps your circadian rhythm aligned with your environment, so that you start to get sleepy late at night when it’s dark. Studies show, however, that the blue light emitted from screens interferes with the brain’s secretion of melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleep. As a result, using technology

OPINION
Govt throws debt target out window R
ight now it feels as though every week the Government breaks another promise to New Zealanders and last week was no different. Finance Minister Grant Robertson has thrown in the towel and scrapped his self-imposed debt target, which was part of his “Budget Responsibility Rules”. Now instead of a fixed target of reducing Crown debt to 20 per cent, Mr Robertson has given himself a range. This essentially means debt could rise to the upper end of the range – 25 per cent – loosening the purse strings by tens of billions of dollars. This amount of money isn’t just “wriggle room”, as the government puts it. The government is admitting defeat. They have repeatedly used these rules to give themselves the appearance of being fiscally responsible and it’s all crumbling down around them. They have been backed into a corner by allowing the economy to slow, over-promising in several areas and spending up large on things like Shane Jones’ slush
With Simeon Brown
Simeon SAYS fund, fees-free for tertiary students, and KiwiBuild – all poor spending choices. This is a blunt admission the Government can’t manage the books properly and an admission of what National has been saying for months, that the government cannot deliver on everything they have promised. But this doesn’t just mean more money to throw around at poor policies, this change means tens of billions of dollars of extra debt our future generations will have to pay for. Mr Robertson is giving the Government a licence to spend up large, but it’s at the taxpayers’ expense. Debt isn’t free. It will have to be paid for with higher taxes in the future. Labour is putting a heavy financial burden on our children
and grandchildren. National believes in paying down debt when the economy is in good shape so we have the ability to support New Zealand during a crisis, like we did during the Global Financial Crisis and the Christchurch earthquakes. That’s what has historically kept New Zealand out of trouble. Instead, Labour has wasted the surpluses they inherited and weakened our economy through poor economic management. New Zealand could have had enough money to meet our needs. The debt target is the latest broken promise by the Government as its “year of delivery” continues to be an embarrassing string of failures. The Prime Minister and the Finance Minister have waved the white flag on a significant rule they promised to New Zealanders. The Government is 18 months in and Mr Robertson has given up any pretence of fiscal responsibility, showing you just can’t trust Labour with the economy. Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga

If you are thinking of volunteering you might want to think about what types of activities you enjoy, what skills and experience you have to offer, what causes are important to you, and, how much time you would be willing to commit – this will give you direction. If there is a particular organisation you would like to volunteer with, don’t be afraid to contact them and ask if they have any volunteer positions which you could apply for. Depending upon your interests, you could approach different types of organisations such as: ➤ Education providers – they may need volunteers to help with fundraising, governance, maintenance and upkeep of property or information technology support. ➤ Youth organisations – they may be looking for mentors, activities organisers, drivers and
more. ➤ Animal welfare groups – they may want people to do hands–on care of animals or advocating for animal rights. ➤ Environmental and conservation groups – they may be nationwide or have a local focus. ➤ Professional interest, cultural or creative groups may need volunteers for organising events, governance, professional advice, marketing and publicity or management. CAB has been serving the community for more than 40 years and this amazing service is provided by volunteers. It offers volunteers a great opportunity for personal learning and development. Volunteering helps to learn new skills, knowledge and gain experience. It helps to meet new people
and form life-long friendships. Plus, making an invaluable difference. All this while having fun! At the moment, CAB Pakuranga/Botany is looking for volunteers to work as interviewers. If you are a good communicator, problem solver, confident in using a computer, eager to learn and work in a multi-cultural organisation, contact Louise on 576 9170. ➤ Solutions editorial has been compiled by Vani, and is a regular column from the Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau, Library Building, Pakuranga, phone 576 8331 and at Botany Citizens Advice Bureau, rear Food Court Entrance, Botany Town Centre, phone 271 5382 or 0800 267 222 for free, confidential and informative help.

SEVENS RUGBY
Howick College Senior Girls 7s side clinches fourth in youth worlds The Howick College Senior Girls Rugby 7s team narrowly missed out on a third placing at the Sanix Youth World Rugby Tournament in Fukuoka, Japan. Howick College achieved something of a first at the end of 2018 when they came away with two National Championship titles in both the U15 Girls and the Senior Girls Divisions at the Youthtown Condor Rugby Sevens National Secondary School Tournament. As a result of their success, the Senior Girls team was invited to play in the Sanix Youth World Rugby Tournament in Japan 2019 last month. After losing nine members of the original team, a young and inexperienced squad began training and trialling from the beginning of February. With the final selection made and after months of fundraising, the team departed on April 22 for Japan. The opening ceremony in Fukuoka, home of the Sanix Tournament, was a thrilling experience with girls 7s teams and boys 15s teams from Russia, Canada, England, Australia, South Africa, Argentina and Japan present. The Howick College girls were extremely proud to represent their country alongside the New Zealand boys team, St Peter’s College 1st XV The first day at tournament saw the team play three pool games;

two against Japanese schools and one from Russia. A good win against Otemon Gakuin High School from Osaka 50-5, was a great way to start the tournament. The next game was very tight and finished with a 14-12 win against Kanto Gakuin Mutsuura High School from Kanagawa. The final pool game, against Moscow Girls, was very physical but the team came through with a 29-0 win. Howick College finished top of their pool and headed into the semis on day two. The semis saw the team up against the Fukuoka Ladies Team, a club team that was fast and strong.

Fukuoka Ladies finished on top, leaving Howick College to battle it out for 3rd and 4th place. In a close match against Kanto Gakuin Matsuura High School, with the lead flipping from team to team, the Japanese team finally took the 19-15 win. It was a fantastic experience for the team who were proud ambassadors for their families, school and New Zealand. Their trip saw them travel to Tokyo, Kyoto, Fukuoka and Osaka and, with the help of the Asia New Zealand Foundation, they were able to experience some of the unique Japanese culture.

akuranga United Rugby Club’s Premiers almost pulled off the comeback of the season reducing a heavy half-time deficit to record a 24-18 loss against Eden. PURC director of rugby Pita Alatini said the performance demonstrates an ability by the Prems to step up in the second half. The Prems were down 19-3 at the break. “They (Eden) were very clinical in that first half. We gave away too many penalties. That was pretty disheartening.,” he said. “But in the second Half we adapted and had a bit more opportunity and near the end we were well within a position to win.” The Prems had to focus to stay in the hunt for a top four finish. They meet Papatoetoe at home this weekend.

Beware Indian comeback

isely the Black Caps are not getting carried away with their six-wicket victory against powerful India in their opening World Cup ODI warm-up game on London’s Oval wicket which saw Trent Boult weave his swing magic. With Boult leading the way with his 4-33, backed by all-rounder Jimmy Neesham’s 3-26, India struggled to 179 from 39.2 overs. New Zealand hit the required 180 with almost 13 overs to spare, thanks to Ross Taylor’s 71 and Kane Williamson’s 67. While skipper Williamson accumulated his total from a pedestrian 87 balls after a disappointing Indian Premier League Twenty20, Taylor amassed his from just 75 at almost a run ball. Before that, Taylor’s ODI average this year was 74.1. In 2017 it was 60.5 and last year it was an incredible Bradman like 91.3. While coach Gary Stead would have been delighted with the performance of his two premier batsmen, there will be concern Colin Munro went for a three-ball duck and opening partner Martin Guptill was dismissed for a shaky 22. Munro likes to play with the fearless abandon of dynamic mentor Brendon McCullum who gave the

Black Caps such a fast start on their way to the 2015 World Cup glory before ecstatic home crowds. Unfortunately he can also be reckless and sacrifice his wicket too easily, just as McCullum did against Australia in the 2015 final against brilliant pace bowler Mitchell Starc. On a pitch favouring swing and seam that was so different to what is expected on others that will favour the batsmen, the Black Caps made hay while the sun shone at the Oval. Particularly pleasing was Colin de
Grandhomme’s 1-12 from six economic overs in which he captured the wicket of master batsman Virat Kohli for 18 with a pearler. All-rounders Neesham and de Grandhomme are hard-hitting middle order batsmen who can accumulate runs quickly. But only one may make the starting XI if dry wickets favour fielding both spinners, Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi, who went wicketless against India. Still it was a heartening opening warm-up for a team that had not

been together for a few months although everyone expects India, along with England and Australia, to be a much tougher proposition when the championship proper gets underway on Thursday. Meanwhile I’m surprised that in strongly favouring experience, passionate Silver Ferns coach Noeline Taurua left Aliyah Dunn out of her World Cup squad. Goal shoot Dunn’s scoring percentage in the ANZ championship has been consistently superior to
goal attacks Bailey Mes and Ameliaranne Ekenasio although apparently Taurua wasn’t satisfied with her strength and conditioning. On the credit side Mes is an outstanding rebounder whereas Ekenasio is a beautiful feeder whose combination with Dunn is a major reason for the Central Pulse’s success this season. And no-one works the circle better. Obviously there is no complaint about the selection of Australian based Maria Folau who, at 32, has hinted her outstanding international career could be coming to a close. That would be a pity for her amazing long range goals, shot quickly with such poise and confidence, is one of the international game’s greatest highlights. The squad is: Karin Burger, Gina Crampton, Ameliaranne Ekenasio, Maria Folau, Phoenix Karaka, Casey Kopua, Laura Langman (captain), Bailey Mes, Katrina Rore, Shannon Saunders, Te Paea Selby-Rickit, Jane Watson. ➤ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
